Newberry Oktoberfest: Celebrating our German Heritage

Oktoberfest Newberry SCWe are convinced that our local Newberry Oktoberfest is the best in South Carolina, giving us all a chance to celebrate our German heritage in historic Downtown Newberry. I hope that you will come visit and see for yourself one day, maybe even this year?

The Newberry Oktoberfest party fills the streets on the first Saturday of every October, which means that for 2018, we are celebrating on October 6 from 10 am to 6 pm. The entertainment is free and everyone is welcome. We have a small town vibe and we are known as the City of Friendly Folks for a reason…. we love meeting visitors and you’ll be given a warm welcome!

If you want to know what to expect at Newberry Oktoberfest…. read on! I took these photos in previous years, to give you a taste of the event.

Many people dress up for the occasion and there is also a hotly contested Best German Traditional Dress Contest. This handsome couple certainly looks the part!

This is inside our EuroLux antiques store at 1409 Main Street. Definitely come in and say hello to us any time you come to Newberry… You don’t have to be in costume!  Our 1910 Art Deco building is easy to find as we have a big sign outside that says “Antiques.”

EuroLux Oktoberfest 2018The Oktoberfest festival is a wonderful oompah party with free entertainment including polka music.  This year the music includes old favorites the Three Dot Polka Band and the Reggie Sullivan Band.  You can also enjoy free puppet shows at the Ritz Theater.

Newberry Oktoberfest vintage cars

Newberry Oktoberfest foodGreg especially loves the annual Midlands SC Muscle & Classic Cars show.  Don’t miss the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile!

And of course, we all enjoy a few cold beers in the biergartens and all the delicious German food, such as  schnitzel, sauerkraut, bratwurst, German potato salad, liver nips (liver dumplings) and lots of sweet treat baked goods.

Kids have fun with free activities in Kindertown, including carousel rides, a 50-foot obstacle course, an inflatable fun park, human bowling, face painting, a rock climbing wall, and crafts.

Arts and crafts vendors will also line the streets, selling all kinds of interesting and unusual items. If you are in the area during Oktoberfest, come on down, sing, dance, eat and have fun and wish us all Prost!

Antiques Shopping in South Carolina? Visit Ashtabula Historic House

If you are antiques shopping in South Carolina, there are so many great places for you to visit along the way, including the Ashtabula Historic House. It’s about 90 minutes away from our Eurolux antiques gallery on Main Street in Historic Newberry, so once you’ve enjoyed looking around Newberry, you can drive over to Ashtabula.

Ashtabula at Christmas

Check their website for current opening hours. At time of writing, the house is open on Sunday afternoons for public tours, with private tours for six or more by appointment at any time. There are also special events. The photo above shows Ashtabula at the annual Christmas celebration and historical reenactment event. The house is dressed for the holidays and guides dressed in period costume tell you about life in the 1800s, accompanied by holiday music.

Ashtabula Plantation 1971 National Register of Historic Places

The two-story clapboard mansion stands in ten acres of grounds, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being on the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. It was built by Lewis Ladsen Gibbes somewhere between 1825 and 1828. He was a widely-traveled man who had studied at the Sorbonne in France and Eton in England. He and his wife wanted a home where they could benefit from the healthy climate of the foothills. The house became a self-sufficient farm and the mansion and plantation were owned by many other people before being given for restoration to The Pendleton Historic Foundation in 1961.

Ashtabula Historic Plantation House

The house is now restored and decorated with antebellum antiques, including pieces that were owned by the families who lived here. The site also includes an original well house and a 1790 brick building that was once a tavern!  As another interesting fact, this land was where the first Jersey and Hereford cattle were introduced into South Carolina.

If you plan a visit, Ashtabula Historic House is three miles east of Pendleton on SC Highway 88.

Client Spotlight: Hilton Head Island, SC

Alan W. enjoys getting away from it all at his vacation home on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. We certainly agree that the view from his dining room overlooking the bay is extremely relaxing – can you hear the gentle waves lapping the shore and the cry of the sea gulls?

Alan was seeking antique dining chairs to go with a large dining table, and we helped him find a Set of 6 Antique French Renaissance Chairs in walnut dating to 1900 that had unique leather seats with embossed dragons on the backs.

Alan also needed additional storage for china and serving pieces in the dining room, so we suggested a massive Vintage French Renaissance Sideboard in oak dating to 1950 with ornate carvings, large twisted legs, and wrought iron decorative supports.

If you’re searching for handsome antique dining chairs, or perhaps an attractive Antique or Vintage Sideboard, let EuroLux Antiques help you find the perfect addition to your home.

Thanks for stopping by the EuroLux Antiques blog!
