Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Console Table

Our customers Mary and Phil returned to our EuroLux antiques store in Newberry to pick out a vintage console table to go beneath a hand-painted antique trumeau mirror that Mary had found at an auction house.  The couple had previously bought an antique buffet from us and a pair of Italian floor lamps for their beautiful chateau style home, as you can see in my previous blog post: Client Spotlight: Antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet.

Delivering vintage console to customer home

We were very happy to revisit their home to deliver the console table they chose. Here is the front of the house. We certainly admired the gorgeous stone exterior, however the photo doesn’t actually give a sense of how large the interior space is. Much like a French chateau, Phil and Mary have built a labyrinth into the side of a hill and this photo only shows the second and third stories. The entire lower level is built into the hillside.

vintage console table

Here is the French Renaissance style vintage console table or sideboard that the couple chose for the entryway. They bought it from us to go beneath the very large, antique, hand-painted trumeau mirror that Mary discovered at an auction house.  The mirror still needs to be hung, but we propped it up on the console table just to get the effect and to snap a photo. The ceilings are so high, but I captured just a bit of the beautiful antique wrought iron fixture hanging above it.

antique dining room furniture

With your back to the console table, you look through another arch into the dining room so that diners will be able to see themselves in the trumeau while enjoying Phil and Mary’s hospitality!  Mary had just hung the handsome and huge antique iron chandelier over the antique dining table. A pair of antique hunting paintings and antique Louis XV sconces add to the feel of the chateau.  The carvings on the console table work well with the heavily carved antique Renaissance dining room chairs. The chairs are scheduled for re-upholstery with new fabric soon and one chair is lying on the floor in the photo as Phil asked for our instruction on how to tighten the joints of all of the chairs. This is a dynamic DIY duo for sure!

Traditional Bathroom

During the tour of their lovely home, I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of Mary’s amazing soaking tub in the master bathroom with a gorgeous view of the woods behind their home. I am truly jealous of that tub!

During this second delivery, Phil mentioned that he was now searching for a pair of thrones to sit in front of the huge stone fireplace in the living room. We’ve sent photos by email and hope we’ll be delivering the antique hunting thrones soon so that we can take more photos of this amazing chateau that Phil and Mary have built with such love and dedication. Meanwhile, the vintage console table has found the perfect home!

What is the Louis XV Style of Antique Furniture?

The Louis XV style of antique furniture is a romantic and lavishly decorative style of furniture that emerged in the reign of Louis XV, also known as Louis Quinze in French. The style is forever popular and for a very good reason.  It is beautiful and ornate but light in spirit and in form. This style is all about the curve! Sensuous lines and intricate carvings create an impressive decorative effect, but they are not so overwhelming in scale or opulence that they overwhelm any space smaller than a palace!

Vintage Louis XV chestThese looks can easily translate to our homes today, whether you decorate an entire house or room in Louis XV style, or simply add a few antique pieces to bestow a romantic and feminine touch on a more eclectic design scheme. For example, the above bedroom at a customer’s home in Sarasota includes a vintage Louis XV vanity chest of drawers that they bought from us, which gives a very pretty look. You can read more about the Louis XV Vanity Chest of Drawers in this Client Spotlight blog post.

French Antique Buffet 1890

This lavish look rose to popularity in the 1700s, and it was also influenced by the king’s favorite mistress Madame du Pompadour. During this Golden Age of decorative style in France, the new look was attractive to the king’s court.

Typical features of this French Rococo Louis XV style include ornate carvings including shells and wavy or watery shapes that look almost like frills. The shell is probably one of the most famous motifs of this period, often seen crowning a buffet or a bed headboard or on a chair rail. Read my Antique French Louis XV Buffet Client Spotlight to see more about this stunning 1890 beauty pictured left, which we found in France at the request of a customer in California.

Flowing scroll shapes and flourishes often look like the letters S and C.   Carved Acanthus leaves are also common as well as birds, flowers and fruit. The carvings on Louis XV furniture were often asymmetric, which was refreshingly new in this period of design.

Louis XV Vintage French Rococo Chairs Curves are again important in the S-shaping of cabriole legs on chairs and tables. (You’ve got to love the cabriole legs on this set of vintage French Louis XV dining chairs!) Chair backs were often shaped like a cartouche, which is basically a rounded oval, topped with carvings.

A greater emphasis on comfort in this era led to seat backs being very slightly angled, allowing the user to relax back, rather than having to sit bolt upright! Antique Louis XV style furniture invites people to relax and chat in comfort.

Convex curved shaping on the front of sideboards, cabinets and consoles added to the wavy sensuality, and this new innovation became known as the bombe shape. Marquetry, gilding, lacquering inspired by Chinoiserie, and other painted finishes added to the ornamental appeal.

Client Spotlight: Vintage Chair in Home Office

Many people buy antique and vintage chairs for their dining rooms, but a single vintage chair is a wonderful addition to a home office too. An antique or vintage chair looks superb in your office, study, writing studio or other work space, whether you have a traditional office decor or a more eclectic look in your study. Our customer William in Knoxville, TN, proves the point.
Vintage Leather Renaissance ChairWilliam bought this lovely French vintage dining chair or accent chair from us to team with an antique desk he already owned.

The vintage chair from France is designed in the Renaissance  Henry II style and it dates to 1930. The chair still boasts its original brown leather upholstery on the back of the chair, embossed with a flourishing floral design. The bottom seat cushion had already been reupholstered.

This nicely carved chair has attractive detailing on the legs and nail head trim on the brown leather upholstery. It looks very regal and the traditional style is great for William’s home.

Vintage Chair in Home Office Study

Here is the chair paired with William’s very handsome French Renaissance antique desk.  The combination of aged wood and leather really creates a lovely luxurious and traditional atmosphere in a room. You will notice that the embossed leather on the vintage chair at the desk ties in with the leather arm chair and the two leather sofas. I love the color of those blue leather sofas! The wood-framed fireplace also looks wonderful and William’s statues and figurines adorning the space create elegant decorative accents.

William’s study looks like a very welcoming place to write letter or curl up and read books on a rainy day!

Often we have antique and vintage chairs available in singles as well as sets, and the single chairs are well-priced. We also have pairs of chairs available, so you can buy one for your own desk chair and another for your clients or visitors. It looks very cool and unusual to have a genuine antique or vintage chair from France in your work space and it’s a great conversation starter!

Client Spotlight: Louis XV Vanity Chest of Drawers

Vintage Louis XV Vanity ChestInterior designer Debbie at DMS Interiors in Sarasota, FL, found our Houzz.com listing for this pretty vintage Louis XV marble-top vanity chest of drawers with mirror.

Debbie thought it was the perfect fit for her client’s project in Sarasota. The family wanted to change one of their guest rooms to have a bit more of a feminine aesthetic for a new guest, a close friend of the daughter.

The 1930 vintage French Rococo mahogany chest of drawers with its beautiful white marble top, charming ornate metal handles, curvy shaping and scrolled feet was a wonderful touch for the room!

As the daughter’s friend was arriving the following week, Debbie wanted to know if we could expedite the shipping rather than take the normal three or four week time frame for white glove delivery. We always try to do everything we can for our customers so we decided to make it happen! Customer home in FloridaDelivering antique furniture We left early in the morning and made it to the family’s address in Sarasota just before 7 pm. The client’s home has a gorgeous view of the water and quite a wonderful pool too. The guest bedroom is upstairs to the right, overlooking the pool. However, the flight of 20 steps was a bit of work with such a heavy vintage vanity chest of drawers!

Luckily the marble and mirror come off the chest for safe transport. Greg and I took out the drawers too to make it a bit more manageable for me. I may only be 5 foot 2 inches, but I can carry furniture when I need to!

Vintage Louis XV chest

We hefted it up the stairs and put it in place, where it will enjoy a beautiful view for years to come. This is such a delightful room and the Louis XV vanity chest of drawers looks terrific. This is the view from the house:

Since we were in Florida, Greg and I decided to visit Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando before heading home. Greg went with family when he was two years old, so he didn’t remember much. I grew up in Florida and have been many times, but a day at Disney is always fun. We hit all the highlights – Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion (Greg’s favorite), Jungle Cruise and my favorite, the Enchanted Tiki Room.

Disney's Magic Kingdom in Orlando

Much has changed in Fantasy Land since I was there last year, and the changes were interesting to see. My secret tip if you happen to be traveling to Disney, is to stop in Gatson’s Tavern in Fantasy Land. They have created a very delicious apple cider slush drink called LeFou’s Brew that is not to be missed on a hot Florida day!

Client Spotlight: Reupholstered Vintage Sheepbone Chairs

Vintage French Sheepbone ChairsI love this “Reupholstered in Seattle” story. Greg and I found a set of 24 vintage sheepbone chairs that had been used as conference room chairs in France. The vintage chair set dated to the 1930s and each chair was upholstered in a rather ugly green, red and gold striped velour fabric. We optimistically thought of them as “Christmas chairs!” But the frames were so nicely carved we knew they could find a good home.

We had the chairs shipped from France to America and then we decided to split the set up into two sets of 12 chairs. One set went to a designer in Miami, Florida and the other set went to a designer in Seattle, WA. Obviously the designers could see past the upholstery to the true beauty that lay beneath!

Reupholstered Vintage French Chairs

Here are photos of how the chairs turned out for Hoedemaker Pfeiffer the Seattle architecture and interior design company that had their set reupholstered.

They are really great in our opinion!

The red upholstery looks terrific against the oak chair frame and the nailhead trim is so striking.

Vintage French Sheepbone Dining ChairsThey are called sheepbone chairs because of the shapely legs.

This style of chair is called ‘os de mouton’ in French, which simply translates as bone of the sheep because it looks like a lamb’s leg.

This photo shows the chairs in the designer’s client’s dining room. That gorgeous long table is also antique and I love the design of the rug.

Between the reupholstered oak sheepbone chairs, the antique table, and the wood paneled walls, this looks like the setting for some very noble dinner gatherings indeed!

Thanks to our customer Holland Stephens at the interior design company Hoedemaker Pfeiffer for sending us the photos. Holland was happy with how the chairs worked out and we are delighted to see them given a makeover and a beautiful new life!

You can see more vintage French Sheepbone chairs in this customer spotlight, which shows how well the vintage chairs fit into a stylish dining room in California!

Client Spotlight: Vintage French Rococo Chairs

Our customer Fran P. found this beautiful set of vintage French Rococo dining chairs in our listings on Chairish, but she made the smart decision to track down our website EuroLuxHome.com and reach out to me directly for a best price! As Fran only lives about two hours from us in Concord, NC, she decided to drive down to our store in Newberry, SC, in order to pick up the chairs in person.

Vintage Rococo French Dining Chair Set

The set of 6 mahogany vintage French dining chairs dates to 1950 and the chairs are full of charming Rococo appeal. The sensuously curvy lines, the cabriole legs, and the carved curlicues on the mahogany wood frame are the perfect match for the chic pinky beige fabric upholstery. The sweet nailhead trim accents the glamorous silhouette, making these vintage Rococo French chairs a truly delicious treat as a dining room set.

Vintage French Rococo Dining Chairs

It was a real pleasure meeting Fran and her daughter, and you can see how truly wonderful the chairs look in Fran’s dining room. Fran said, “It was such a pleasure to visit, your items are beautiful, and we love our purchase!” We are pleased to have such a happy customer and we agree that this set of chairs is perfect for Fran’s dining room. The faded pink upholstery works very well with the pinks, mauves, and cranberry in her rug and she did a great job of finding such a good set of vintage chairs to blend in both color and style with her mahogany Rococo table. The gorgeous gilded Rococo mirror adds even more glam to room.

Vintage Capodimonte Chandelier ItalianFran says that she is now looking to replace the brass chandelier. I think this vintage Italian Capodimonte chandelier in our gallery would look fantastic. It  dates to 1950 and has an unusual cherub motif that is adorable. The angelic pastel pink and blue colors bring the scenes to life and the metal arms curve in a very elegant way. This relatively rare style of six-arm Italian chandelier doesn’t become available very often and so I wanted to share it with our blog readers because it is just so pretty!

New Italian Chandelier Gold CrystalsOr for even more glam, Fran could opt for this stunning new Italian Murano cut glass chandelier! The Rococo style 8-arm crystal chandelier is dramatically crafted with gold leaves and gorgeous clear glass pendants and clear glass flowers.

Fran has such good taste that I’m sure that any chandelier she chooses will be the ideal match for the vintage French Rococo chairs and her beautiful dining room.  I imagine she will host many elegant dinners in that lovely space!

Client Spotlight: Vintage French Games Table in Chateau

At the beginning of December we made a delivery of a vintage French games table to a gorgeous house in Georgia that has the look of a French chateau.

French vintage Games table

This is the vintage French games table that Nita and her husband Walter purchased.

The Regency style table set with four chairs was made in France in about 1960 and you can see that the round table has drawers to store your cards and dice. The gold design on the green leather top and the handsome matching tufted chairs make the set look especially debonair, as if it came from a chic casino in Paris or Cannes.

We made the delivery to Nita and Walter in their beautiful home in Augusta, GA. There are so many lovely details to the house, it really resembles a French chateau from the outside.

Chateau house

I couldn’t resist taking a photo of the gorgeous courtyard that one encounters after entering the wrought iron gate:

Lion Fountain Courtyard

The fountain that runs from the lion’s mouth on the brick wall had been turned off as we were starting to have evening temperatures that dropped below freezing.  What a lovely spot to enjoy coffee and croissants, or a bottle of wine at the end of the day!

Vintage Games table in room

We delivered the vintage French games table to a large living area at the rear of the home, off the large kitchen. The floor-to-ceiling fireplace crafted in natural stone is absolutely stunning in person. The vintage games table in mahogany has a beautiful green leather playing surface that pairs superbly with the four green leather upholstered chairs with a Mid-Century Modern look. The green leather is the perfect complement to the olive green in the large Oriental rug.

Vintage French Games table room

The ceilings were so high that I couldn’t quite catch them in the room view, but they are hand-planed wooden planks, framed by massive wooden support beams. The natural light pouring through the windows floods this cozy nook.

I don’t know how to play bridge, but this looks like an ideal spot for fun times spent with family and friends near a warm fire this winter season! Thank you Nita and Walter for letting us see inside your lovely home. We hope that the vintage French games table brings you many years of good fun and good luck!

Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Dining Table

We just delivered a massive vintage Renaissance dining table to Crystal B. in Harlem, Georgia. Crystal found us on Ebay and let us know that she had been searching for the perfect table for her large, open kitchen for the past 4 years! It’s a charming kitchen so let’s take a look at the table and its new home..

1950 Vintage Renaissance Dining TableThis is the large Renaissance style vintage French dining table Crystal bought from our selection of new, vintage and antique dining tables. It was crafted circa 1950 with a beautiful golden parquet top and an ornate wrought iron stretcher that adds to the Renaissance feel.

Parquet top vintage dining tableThis end view might give you a better look at the square parquet design on the table top. You can also see how the darker wood base and legs are carved with traditional rope, leaf, and scroll motifs.

Vintage Renaissance Table in Dining Room

Here’s the vintage Renaissance table in Crystal’s kitchen. We’re glad we were able to help her find the perfect piece to complement her décor! Take a look at the beautiful window treatments, which Crystal made herself — freehand! — and notice how the black, green and mauve fabric ties it all together. And what a gorgeous view this handsome vintage Renaissance table with its massive carved legs will enjoy through the three large, nearly floor-to-ceiling windows! It is hard to tell in the photograph, but in person we could see that the leaves were beginning to show the full range of vibrant autumn colors – reds, yellows and oranges.

Vintage Renaissance Table and iron pot rack

The black wrought iron stretcher under the vintage table ties in with this stunning black wrought iron pot rack over Crystal’s island.  This traditional kitchen is packed with “welcome home” appeal, combining handsome looks with warm comfort. What a lovely spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and perhaps a hearty bowl of oatmeal for breakfast!

Thank you Crystal for giving us a glimpse into your home. We agree that you DID find the perfect table at last and we hope you enjoy it for many years!
