Client Spotlight: Antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet

When we delivered an antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet to our customers Mary and Phil, we had no idea what a great treat we were in for while touring their chateau-style home! Read on and see for yourself.

We met Phil and Mary in our antiques store in Newberry. They came to find a buffet to function as a dresser between two closets in their master bedroom. Mary explained they have been building their dream chateau over the past ten years and they are finally starting to pull it all together. They had very specific dimensions and wanted a beautiful antique buffet in a French Country style. After measuring and remeasuring, they decided on our  gorgeous walnut Louis XVI buffet. Phil said that Mary had her eye on a pair of Italian Blackamoor floor lamps too and he wanted us to deliver those as a birthday surprise for her.

When we arrived at their gorgeous home in Greenwood, SC,, we certainly admired the gorgeous stone exterior, which looks much like a French chateau. The bottom first floor has been built into the hill beneath the home and this is the view from the back garden looking out over the lake. It is stunning! Unfortunately the fountains had already been turned off for the winter season, so we didn’t get photos. We’ll have to come make another delivery in the spring! Mary tells us she loves spending time puttering in the gardens she has built around the back side of the home.
Stone entrywayPhil greeted us at the huge solid wood door under a brick archway and showed off the huge iron bell on a rope that functions as a doorbell. It is also how he lets Mary know it is time to come in out of the garden!

Mary and Phil explained they had designed the entire home themselves based on places they had seen in France and have done much of the work themselves – including building the barrel arch supports on which the brick mason worked to create the amazing arched entry hall!

Phil thought the hand-carved and painted Venetian Blackamoors that he bought in our store would grace the entry way to the castle with their candelabra. (We still have a similar lamp number P-49 available.) Phil surprised Mary with the lamps as a gift, and they do help light up the entrance to the keep! However, on a second delivery to bring a vintage Renaissance style console table for the entry way, we found Mary had moved the Blackamoor lamps to either side of the grand stone fireplace. I didn’t actually capture the entire fireplace because it is so tall!

Blackamoor lamps

And here is the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet that the couple chose for their master bedroom. It fits perfectly between the two closets… just as they planned! antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet The walnut French Country style antique buffet has lovely carvings on the door fronts and pretty shaping around the upper glass door. The mirror set in the back of the buffet gives a nice sense of light and reflection. This is a great choice of buffet to repurpose as a dresser in the bedroom!

After we had delivered the Venetian lamps and the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet, Mary and Phil came back to our antiques store to choose some other furniture. Check out my next blog post titled Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Console Table to see more photos of the house from that second delivery. Meanwhile, we hope you agree with us that this couple has a truly beautiful home!

Client Spotlight: Antique French Louis Philippe Chest of Drawers

WE were delighted when previous customers Jenni and Chris returned for another purchase: A beautiful antique French Louis Philippe chest of drawers. The Louis Philippe style of antique furniture is very refined and elegant, as you can see at the link showing furniture in this style for sale in our online store.

We met Jenni and Chris nearly 15 years ago when they wandered into our very first sales location outside of Newberry, SC. At that time they purchased a set of six sheepbone chairs, four of which they still use at their dining table, while two are perfect at the games table in the living room. I forgot to snap photos in those rooms when we made a delivery to the couple’s house, but here are some examples of sheepbone chairs (in French called Os de Mouton – ooh la la!) that we currently have for sale in the Gallery.

After so many years of enjoying their antique sheepbone chairs, Jenni and Chris decided to visit our current gallery on Main Street in Newberry in search of a piece of furniture to provide more storage in their foyer. After searching through our buildings, the delightful pair were drawn to two different Louis Philippe chest of drawers.

Antique French Louis Philippe chest in entryway for storage

Although it was a difficult choice, Jenni and Chris finally decided on the exquisite burled walnut chest dating from circa 1870, which so perfectly exemplifies the Louis Philippe style with its gorgeous burled walnut grain as decoration. The antique Louis Philippe chest makes a charming entryway piece and looks so inviting decorated with the family heirloom antique clock, a few blue and white pieces, and a pretty table lamp. You can even see a peep of those sheepbone chairs through the hallway in the dining room at the back of the photos. And I especially love the live green plants in the foyer too – proving Jenni and Chris have green thumbs in addition to excellent taste!

This is the outside of their house, which was a very welcoming sight when we delivered the antique chest of drawers.  In case you’re not familiar with the classic Louis Philippe style, I’ll share a little French furniture history with you.

King Louis Philippe (1830 – 1848) was related to the Royal Bourbon family through the brother of Louis XIV, and survived the French Revolution in 1789 by supporting the liberal factions in opposition to his relatives, the Royal family. Eventually the crown was passed to Louis Philippe, who took the title King of the French rather than the title King of France, which had been used by his former Bourbon relatives. Louis Philippe fashioned himself a King of the people, rather than of a state, and was called the Citizen King and bourgeois monarch. He ruled in an unpretentious manner and avoided the pomp and lavish spending of his predecessors.

This led to a radically different style of furniture and decorative arts than had been seen in the French court in the past. The Louis Philippe style focused on the natural beauty of the wood itself, using the patterns of the wood grain as the decorative element, and emphasizing simple, clean lines and curves. As machinery was just beginning to be used for mass production of furniture, manufacturers found this simple style easy to create for the rising middle class, who had considerable income to spend. Eventually, however, the fickle masses turned against their champion and revolted in 1848. Louis Philippe was forced to abdicate, the Bourbon monarchy of France came to an end, and the Second Empire of France began.

This is the other chest of drawers that Jenni and Chris considered but finally didn’t buy, so it’s still available in our online store at time of writing. It’s another great example of the Louis Philippe style.

Antique French Chest of Drawers Louis PhilippeThe burled walnut wood and marble top add great decorative interest to the antique Louis Philippe chest of drawers, which dates to 1870. It is accented by elegant gold tone drawer handles and locks and at just over 4 feet wide, the antique chest of drawers provides a very distinctive storage space for your favorite silk and cashmere scarves or for household items. The classical lines and high quality burled walnut and marble create a sense of timeless grace.

You can find this and other antique furniture in the Louis Philippe style here on our website.  We were very happy to see Chris and Jenni again and we look forward to helping them out next time they are furniture hunting!

Bookshelf: French Country House Style

Who doesn’t wish they could live in a French Country house? If we can’t actually move to France to live in the beautiful rolling countryside, then we can at least recreate this timeless and charming style in our home decor. The French Country look is elegant but still comfortable, welcoming and easy to live with. These recently published books explore what gives your home the French Country look and summon up the easy-going Country House style.

French Country Cottage

French Country CottageAuthor Courtney Allison shows the story of how she renovated her 1940’s cottage in California with a romantic interpretation of French Country style.  The rural cottage had been abandoned before Allison brought her magic touch to it, filling it with a combination of rustic and refined element to evoke the feeling of a French Country home.

Allison includes antique furniture in her home… of course! Antiques and vintage pieces are important to this look to give the romantic aged effect of heirlooms and things collected over the years. Other key elements include a muted color palette and fixtures such as vintage door knobs. Allison also believes that every room should have a beautiful chandelier! We agree with you, Allison!

French Country: Collected & Timeless Charm

French Country Collected and Timeless CharmMore than 100 photographs of genuine French homes are sure to inspire readers with plenty of ways to add the French Country look to their own homes.

The dreamy color palettes, antique furniture, vintage styling and gorgeous details add up to a wonderful sense of visual delight and relaxed living,  As well as interiors, the book explores the open-air lifestyle in French gardens too.

Nora Murphy’s Country House Style: Making your Home a Country House

Country House StyleAlthough Murphy’s book doesn’t focus solely on French Country style, she does show readers the universal elements of the comforting and laid-back country living look. These translate to any country house influenced interior.  Murphy shows how she has used the style in her own home as well as in other homes, from the city to the village, from the sea to the woods and the mountains.

Sometimes it is the little things that make all the big difference in a room. Murphy’s book is packed with inspiration for a relaxed and refined countrified space.

Client Spotlight: Antique Art Nouveau Buffet

We were delighted to have an unusual antique Art Nouveau buffet in our gallery, and we were even more delighted that it found such a great home!

Kevin and Candice in Summerville, SC, had been looking for years for the perfect piece to put in the hallway of their new home by the South Carolina coast. Kevin reports that Candice is normally slow to decide on big purchases, so he didn’t expect to find anything when they stopped in our EuroLux Home antiques store in Newberry. However, when Candice spotted the gorgeous Art Nouveau buffet, she stopped in her tracks.

French antique Art Nouveau Buffet

It was the right size and the right color of walnut to match with their collection of Arts and Crafts furniture. It didn’t take Candice very long at all to decide this was exactly the right piece – taking Kevin completely by surprise! Doesn’t it look wonderful in their home?

Antique French Art Nouveau Buffet

We don’t see Art Nouveau buffets very often, as the style was only prominent from approximately 1890 to 1910 before the Art Deco style swept the scene. The Art Nouveau style of furniture is quite feminine and pretty. It features organic motifs, such as flowers, vines, leaves, or fruit, and it is especially known for dramatic curves and swirls. The focus was on craftsmanship as a reaction against growing industrialization and mass production at the end of the 19th century. These rare pieces are especially beautiful and the patina of the walnut on this particular Art Nouveau buffet is just stunning.

vintage Louis XV French Country dining chairs

Kevin and Candice also picked out this set of pretty vintage Louis XV French Country dining chairs for the dining room off the hallway. The vintage chairs date to 1930. The charming chairs are crafted in oak wood and they are upholstered in yellow gold velveteen. The Louis XV chairs boast a delicately shaped back with sweet and subtle carving as well as lovely French cabriole legs.

vintage Rococo chandelier

Finally, Kevin and Candice chose a dramatic vintage French Rococo chandelier to light up the entryway. The 10-light metal chandelier dates to around 1950 and it is lavishly adorned with the decorative embellishments and curvy bracket arms that you’d expect from the Rococo style. What a pretty sight it will all make when the chandelier is hung!

Thank you Kevin and Candice for sending the photos of the antique Art Nouveau buffet in your lovely home. We hope it brings you many years of joy!

Autumn Home Decor: Fruits and Grapes

In his poem “To Autumn” the English romantic poet John Keats described it as the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.” He wrote that poem nearly 200 years ago but it is as evocative today as it ever was – the perfect description of fall!  As we all enjoy this cozy time of year, making apple sauce and stocking up on the last of the bounty from the farmers’ markets,  I wanted to share some of my favorite pieces in our online antiques and home accessory store that also celebrate the fruits of the harvest! Art Deco Buffet Vintage 1920

Art Deco buffet carved doorA lot of the antique furniture that we import from France is carved with rustic and rural motifs that pay tribute to the harvest, including this gorgeous oak wood Art Deco buffet (item 18-36) dating to 1920,

The buffet is carved across both the upper and lower oak cabinets with fruits and pretty bunches of grapes…. perfect for wine lovers!

The close up of the door (left) shows just how lovely and detailed the carvings are. Accented by silver-toned handles, the Art Deco cabinet will make quite a nice centerpiece for a dining room or kitchen.

Our customer Natalya S. showed us just how wonderful an antique buffet can look in a kitchen when she sent this photo of an antique Renaissance style buffet she bought from us, now starring in her kitchen in California!

Antique Renaissance Buffet Kitchen Diner

The French antique Henry II Renaissance style buffet dating to 1900 is crafted in walnut and it boasts elaborate carvings of abundant fruit. The design is ideal for a kitchen where the buffet also provides useful storage and display space. What a welcoming kitchen, and I bet it is especially cozy and comfortable in this fall season!

Aubusson Throw Pillow Fruits and Grapes

On a smaller scale, this delicious new Aubusson throw pillow also helps us harvest the fruits of summer!

Crafted using traditional techniques in the style of antique French Aubusson pillows, the new large square Aubusson throw pillow is about 20 inches wide and it depicts luscious grapes and orchard fruits.

The muted green background will blend beautifully into any color scheme and the bright fruit colors will add a warm accent.

Italian Majolica ceramic bowl fruit and grapes

This vibrant hand-painted new Majolica ceramic bowl also adds a dash of color and a charming celebration of the harvest.

The bowl was crafted and hand-painted in Italy, and you can see the Italian love of food in the flamboyant design of harvest fruits and bunches of juicy purple grapes.

The fruit is set off by large leaves spreading across the top of the stylish blue bowl. It measures about 13 inches wide and it would look terrific as a centerpiece on your rustic kitchen table.

Welcome to autumn and I hope you enjoy browsing around our website to find other fall related furniture and home accessories. If you type a word into the search box in our EuroLuxHome.com online store — for example grapes, vines, fruit, flowers etc. — you will see lots of beautiful pieces appear!

What is the Renaissance Henry II Style of Antique Furniture?

If you are looking for a handsome carved antique buffet or dining chairs for your traditional dining room or great room, then you will definitely want to know about the Renaissance Henry II style of antique furniture. You can also check out some regal Renaissance Henry II furniture for sale on our website.

Antique French Buffet Henry II Renaissance BuffetThe Henry II style of antique furniture was influential for much longer than the brief twelve year reign of this King of France from 1547 to his death in 1559. This important furniture style lasted through the reigns of five French monarchs. But the antique Henry II furniture we sell today in this style actually dates to the Renaissance Revival period in the late 19th century, when this very traditional look returned to favor.

Antique Henry II Dining ChairsFurniture in the Henry II style displays the values and aesthetics of the Renaissance, which means rebirth. This rebirth of classical arts and philosophies of ancient Rome and Greece arose in Italy in the 15th century and spread across Europe, influencing architecture and the decorative arts.

Typical decorative details evoked Greek and Roman mythology and architecture, with an emphasis on classical symmetry. You can see the symmetry in these lovely antique Renaissance Henry II style dining chairs crafted in wood and dating to 1900.

Furniture is also adorned with carved arches and columns, stately pediments and attractive finials. Figurative carvings include male and female figures, faces and heads. For example, this gorgeous antique French Renaissance Henry II sideboard or server boasts a crowned Queen carved at the top.

Antique French buffets or servers in the Henry II style are often crafted in beautiful oak or walnut wood, with a rich patina from more than a century of age. The typical buffet will boast columns and spindles, including spindled galleries to serve as plate racks. However, there are many varieties of decorative designs on these unusual pieces.

The furniture also was influenced by the Hunting style, which was led by the French fashion to furnish hunting lodges and chateaux with furniture carved with images of rural life.

Creative antique decor: antique French nightstand in the kitchenHere are some piece of furniture in this style that customers have bought from us. They sent us some wonderful photos showing the furniture in their homes for our customer spotlights.

Our customer Kathleen in Oklahoma bought this French antique nightstand in the Henry II style and she made the clever decision to use it as a kitchen cabinet, providing extra storage and display space.  The geometric walnut marquetry and lovely turned legs are nicely set off by the gray marble top and it looks terrific in her kitchen! See more photos and Kathleen’s full story here.

Henry II style buffets often have bas-relief figures or scenes on the doors. This is a great example, from our client spotlight: Renaissance Chairs and Buffet in Chateau Home, Illinois.

Bob H. in Prairie Grove, Illinois, bought this buffet for his French Renaissance chateau style home. The beautiful buffet is carved with a knight on horseback on the doors. Bob decorated the marble top with a vintage porcelain figure of an apothecary and antique mortar and pestle sets. Can you guess he worked as a pharmacist?

Antique French Dining ChairsIris in Texas bought these oak Henry II dining chairs from us, featuring carvings of birds, and a pair of lions gazing out from the finials. The attractive brass handles are also typical of this style. Renaissance Henry II style antique furniture is all elegant and classically appealing, showing the high quality taste of kings!
