Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Console Table

Our customers Mary and Phil returned to our EuroLux antiques store in Newberry to pick out a vintage console table to go beneath a hand-painted antique trumeau mirror that Mary had found at an auction house.  The couple had previously bought an antique buffet from us and a pair of Italian floor lamps for their beautiful chateau style home, as you can see in my previous blog post: Client Spotlight: Antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet.

Delivering vintage console to customer home

We were very happy to revisit their home to deliver the console table they chose. Here is the front of the house. We certainly admired the gorgeous stone exterior, however the photo doesn’t actually give a sense of how large the interior space is. Much like a French chateau, Phil and Mary have built a labyrinth into the side of a hill and this photo only shows the second and third stories. The entire lower level is built into the hillside.

Here is the French Renaissance style vintage console table or sideboard that the couple chose for the entryway. They bought it from us to go beneath the very large, antique, hand-painted trumeau mirror that Mary discovered at an auction house.  The mirror still needs to be hung, but we propped it up on the console table just to get the effect and to snap a photo. The ceilings are so high, but I captured just a bit of the beautiful antique wrought iron fixture hanging above it.

With your back to the console table, you look through another arch into the dining room so that diners will be able to see themselves in the trumeau while enjoying Phil and Mary’s hospitality!  Mary had just hung the handsome and huge antique iron chandelier over the antique dining table. A pair of antique hunting paintings and antique Louis XV sconces add to the feel of the chateau.  The carvings on the console table work well with the heavily carved antique Renaissance dining room chairs. The chairs are scheduled for re-upholstery with new fabric soon and one chair is lying on the floor in the photo as Phil asked for our instruction on how to tighten the joints of all of the chairs. This is a dynamic DIY duo for sure!

Traditional Bathroom

During the tour of their lovely home, I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of Mary’s amazing soaking tub in the master bathroom with a gorgeous view of the woods behind their home. I am truly jealous of that tub!

During this second delivery, Phil mentioned that he was now searching for a pair of thrones to sit in front of the huge stone fireplace in the living room. We’ve sent photos by email and hope we’ll be delivering the antique hunting thrones soon so that we can take more photos of this amazing chateau that Phil and Mary have built with such love and dedication. Meanwhile, the vintage console table has found the perfect home!

Easy Living with French Country Farmhouse Style

Many of our customers love French Country Farmhouse style, whether they are buying our antique French Country furniture or newly-crafted pieces that stay true to the look. French Country Farmhouse style promises easy living all year round. In summer, the relaxed and casual feel is perfect for long hot days when we want to kick back and feel cool and close to nature. In winter, the cozy and comfortable appeal of this look ensures that you will want to snuggle up and surround yourself with family and friends… and probably lots of lovely warming food, too, as would befit a farmhouse!

This French Country Farmhouse kitchen in Louisville, KY, is a great example of the look, with the traditional rooster on the island. Roosters and chickens are typical of this rustic French decor style, and the look is also associated with good, nourishing food and a relaxed rural way of life. Family and friends are always welcome, and everything is designed to be easy to live with… distressed finishes mean that you don’t have to be precious about your furniture!

For this reason, the style is especially well-suited to kitchens and dining rooms. It’s where everyone gathers to make memories… whether you are sharing small everyday moments over a cup of coffee and a slice of cake, or enjoying a lively feast for in a bigger celebration.

French Country Stool in the kitchenThis photo of our customer Stephanie C.’s kitchen in Kernersville, NC, includes a counter stool from our selection of French Country stools at EuroLuxHome.com.  The newly-crafted stool is beautifully made, with intricate wood carvings, a hand-woven rattan or rush seat, an antiqued blackwashed stain, and the curvy cabriole legs that are typical of French Country style. The silhouette of the stool looks stunning and creates exactly the right mood!

Thanks to the welcoming quality of the French Country Farmhouse style, it also looks great in an entryway or foyer. Notice the muted colors, especially the soft dusky blue which is perfect for the rustic and serene atmosphere. Also notice the combination of natural textures, with woven baskets, a throw pillow on the chair that looks like hessian or flour-sack canvas, a woven rattan seat on the chair, an open weave lampshade, and a wood planked floor.

Client Spotlight: Antique French Louis Philippe Chest of Drawers

WE were delighted when previous customers Jenni and Chris returned for another purchase: A beautiful antique French Louis Philippe chest of drawers. The Louis Philippe style of antique furniture is very refined and elegant, as you can see at the link showing furniture in this style for sale in our online store.

We met Jenni and Chris nearly 15 years ago when they wandered into our very first sales location outside of Newberry, SC. At that time they purchased a set of six sheepbone chairs, four of which they still use at their dining table, while two are perfect at the games table in the living room. I forgot to snap photos in those rooms when we made a delivery to the couple’s house, but here are some examples of sheepbone chairs (in French called Os de Mouton – ooh la la!) that we currently have for sale in the Gallery.

After so many years of enjoying their antique sheepbone chairs, Jenni and Chris decided to visit our current gallery on Main Street in Newberry in search of a piece of furniture to provide more storage in their foyer. After searching through our buildings, the delightful pair were drawn to two different Louis Philippe chest of drawers.

Although it was a difficult choice, Jenni and Chris finally decided on the exquisite burled walnut chest dating from circa 1870, which so perfectly exemplifies the Louis Philippe style with its gorgeous burled walnut grain as decoration. The antique Louis Philippe chest makes a charming entryway piece and looks so inviting decorated with the family heirloom antique clock, a few blue and white pieces, and a pretty table lamp. You can even see a peep of those sheepbone chairs through the hallway in the dining room at the back of the photos. And I especially love the live green plants in the foyer too – proving Jenni and Chris have green thumbs in addition to excellent taste!

This is the outside of their house, which was a very welcoming sight when we delivered the antique chest of drawers.  In case you’re not familiar with the classic Louis Philippe style, I’ll share a little French furniture history with you.

King Louis Philippe (1830 – 1848) was related to the Royal Bourbon family through the brother of Louis XIV, and survived the French Revolution in 1789 by supporting the liberal factions in opposition to his relatives, the Royal family. Eventually the crown was passed to Louis Philippe, who took the title King of the French rather than the title King of France, which had been used by his former Bourbon relatives. Louis Philippe fashioned himself a King of the people, rather than of a state, and was called the Citizen King and bourgeois monarch. He ruled in an unpretentious manner and avoided the pomp and lavish spending of his predecessors.

This led to a radically different style of furniture and decorative arts than had been seen in the French court in the past. The Louis Philippe style focused on the natural beauty of the wood itself, using the patterns of the wood grain as the decorative element, and emphasizing simple, clean lines and curves. As machinery was just beginning to be used for mass production of furniture, manufacturers found this simple style easy to create for the rising middle class, who had considerable income to spend. Eventually, however, the fickle masses turned against their champion and revolted in 1848. Louis Philippe was forced to abdicate, the Bourbon monarchy of France came to an end, and the Second Empire of France began.

This is the other chest of drawers that Jenni and Chris considered but finally didn’t buy, so it’s still available in our online store at time of writing. It’s another great example of the Louis Philippe style.

Antique French Chest of Drawers Louis PhilippeThe burled walnut wood and marble top add great decorative interest to the antique Louis Philippe chest of drawers, which dates to 1870. It is accented by elegant gold tone drawer handles and locks and at just over 4 feet wide, the antique chest of drawers provides a very distinctive storage space for your favorite silk and cashmere scarves or for household items. The classical lines and high quality burled walnut and marble create a sense of timeless grace.

You can find this and other antique furniture in the Louis Philippe style here on our website.  We were very happy to see Chris and Jenni again and we look forward to helping them out next time they are furniture hunting!

Client Spotlight: Jonathan Charles Marquetry Table

We were greeted with a friendly woof at the door of Erin’s beautiful home in Arlington, VA! Bo, the charming Golden Retriever, had his favorite toy in his mouth and wanted to share it with me. We were there to deliver a gorgeous round center table from the high quality manufacturer, Jonathan Charles, and I think you’ll agree it looks smashing in its new home.

The veneered top of the beautiful new Jonathan Charles center table (item JC-429 on our EuroLuxHome.com website) is spectacular with its hand-crafted, intricate design. Each piece of the parquetry inlaid design of intertwined ribbons is carefully hand-applied. Here is a bird’s-eye view of the Jonathan Charles round table top. This will give you a better idea of the intricate detail on the marquetry veneer:

And here is another close-up of the Jonathan Charles center table or accent table, with its lower tier shelf and curvy saber legs. It’s a very striking design, isn’t it?

Jonathan Charles marquetry tableI especially love how Erin arranged this space so that the curved design of the light walnut table echoes the curved design of the handsome vintage Art Deco grandfather clock on the back wall.  The clock was brought back from Germany by family members.

hallway with Jonathan Charles round accent tableThe warm walnut wood tones of both pieces are a perfect complement in the space with the dramatic painted navy walls and bright white molding and trim. It is obvious that Erin has a flair for interior design. Her choice of rugs in both the foreground, and in the living room behind, and even the throw pillows on the sofa, tie all of the colors in the two spaces together and draw the viewer’s eye into her lovely home.

The beautiful piece of art on the wall is part of the family’s growing art collection and was found on a vacation in Louisiana and shipped home. What a warm and inviting entryway space with living room beyond – we’re impressed!

Thanks for letting us share photos of your lovely home, Erin, and thanks to Bo for greeting us so warmly too!
