Florida Road Trip 3: Antique Henry II Dining Chairs

After Greg and I decided to take a road trip to Florida to make a delivery to the Orlando area, Katrina in Alva, FL, purchased this handsome set of six antique Henry II dining chairs in our Etsy store. We were delighted that we could include this delivery to the Ft. Myers area on the way to visit my home town of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

antique French Henry II dining chairs

We love this style of antique Renaissance Henry II dining chairs and buy as many sets as we can find during our antiques buying trips to France. We recently sold a similar set to the television show, Ozark, and you can read about that delivery trip here.

This particular set of antique Henry II dining chairs is especially nice as the scale is a bit larger than most. These antique chairs are carved in walnut and they show the patina of age on the wood frames. This is the kind of finish that you cannot buy in new furniture. The dining chairs date to around 1890 so they have certainly earned their patina!

embossed leather on antique Henry II dining chairs

The original embossed leather featured was especially detailed. There are scrolls, floral elements, roaring lion faces and even dragonflies!

When we pulled up to this amazing estate right on the river, we were stunned by the absolutely beautiful location! Katrina explained she is the caretaker of her brother’s estate and the whole family lives on the compound – her children were out mowing the grass when we pulled up. There is a huge pool with a water slide and waterfall on the side of this palatial home that faces the river.

And what a stunning view indeed! It seemed like paradise to us. Katrina explained that her brother had won the lottery after much hardship in his life and he has given her free reign to decorate the estate. Luckily for us, Katrina loves heavily-carved antique furniture – our specialty.

We ooohed and ahhhed over several pieces in her home on the way to place these regal chairs at a wrought iron table in the middle of the great room, right off of the kitchen. They fit right in with her Renaissance style decor!

She had recently painted the wall black and it really does create quite a dramatic effect with the marble floors and ornate, hand-carved built-in bookcases and mantel. The dark leather on the antique dining chairs blends in nicely with the black leather upholstery on the sofas in the great room.

Greg and I reminded ourselves to stop and buy a lottery ticket as we drove out of the compound gates! Next stop was my hometown of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida!

As we drove away from the family living in their beautiful estate, we were delighted to know that the set of French antique Henry II dining chairs had found such a happy home.

Florida Road Trip 2: Antique Louis XVI Dining Chairs

I hope you enjoy the next step in our Florida road trip… to deliver a set of antique Louis XVI dining chairs. In my last blog post I wrote about our trip to South Florida — where I grew up — to deliver a vintage Renaissance cabinet. Greg and I often joke that once we decide to take a road trip, it seems we always end up selling other pieces along the route. In this case, we were already heading to Lakeland, Florida, when Twila, an interior designer, reached out to us about a gorgeous set of twelve antique Louis XVI dining chairs she was interested in buying for her client Margaret in Jacksonville.

Margaret immigrated to the United States from Poland, and as she grew up in a home filled with beautiful European antiques as a child, it has been her dream to have her own French Chateau-inspired home.

Chateau style home in Florida

As we drove up to the circular cobblestone driveway to Margaret’s house, we certainly were impressed with the classic French architectural styling of the home, complete with wrought iron railings and a romantic balcony! The formal landscaping just adds to the je ne sais quoi!

Dining Room with Antique French Louis

The set of twelve antique Louis XVI chairs that Margaret and Twila selected are hand-carved in walnut, crafted with a rich butterscotch leather upholstery, and date to circa 1890. They look amazing with the large circular antique table in the dining room. The butterscotch leather looks very pretty with the soft golden yellow walls and draperies.

Antique French Louis XVI dining chairs

The formal dining room also features a gorgeous Louis XV French Country Sideboard and a large, hand-carved Louis XV French Country mirror that pair perfectly with the antique table and antique chairs. The pretty herringbone parquet flooring and the romantic candelabra sconces and large crystal chandelier add more formal elegance, while the view of the formal garden through the series of large French doors steals the show!

If only we could stay for a sumptuous French feast of Chateaubriand and linger over an excellent Bordeaux!

We hope that Margaret enjoys the antique Louis XVI dining chairs in her beautiful home and that they conjure up the old European mood that she enjoys!

Antique Renaissance Dining Chairs Look Great in Today’s Homes

Antique Renaissance dining chairs look great in today’s homes! We buy many antique French Renaissance chairs from Europe and bring them back to the USA. Our customers are so delighted that they send us pictures of how amazing the chairs look in their dining rooms. For example, these antique Renaissance dining room chairs dating to 1900 feature regal lion carvings and metal handles and they look terrific around our customer Susan’s dining room table in Metamora, IL. See more in my Renaissance Dining room blog post here.

If you don’t know this style, you can check out our full description of the Renaissance Revival style of furniture on our website.  But as a quick guide, the original Renaissance era dates to 15th century Italy, when furniture and architecture was inspired by the classical arts of ancient Rome and Greece. The Renaissance Revival style then flourished again in 19th century France, when the newly wealthy middle class wanted large, ornate and heavily carved furniture.  These pieces have a dignified opulence, and they are perfect for people who enjoy comfortable but noble decor.

Here is another great example of four antique French Renaissance dining chairs in our customer Iris’ home in Texas. The brass handles on the chairs create a nice silhouette and the spindles set in the backs of the chairs also make a decorative statement.  Here’s a better view of the beautifully carved chair backs.

This shows you just how handsome the chairs look when your guests sit down for dinner! The oak chairs are carved in the Renaissance Henry II style, which is is very regal, emphasizing classical symmetry in details like arches, columns and finials. If you like this look, my post called What is the Renaissance Henry II Style of Antique Furniture? is a must-see!

Rich surface decoration in upholstery as well is in carvings is also a feature of Renaissance style dining chairs. We love the way our set of six French Renaissance dining chairs look in our customer Lenore’s dining room in Sapphire, NC. The vintage chairs were made around 1930 and they are beautifully upholstered in red and cream brocade. The spiral turning on the oak legs adds another decorative detail. See more about the Vintage Renaissance chairs in Lenore’s charming country cottage.

Some extraordinary antique Renaissance Revival furniture emerged in Europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and we have the luck to be able to cross the Atlantic and choose our favorite pieces to bring back to the States for you! Client Spotlight: Antique French Louis XIII Dining Chairs

We have a lovely treat for you today, with photos of our antique French Louis XIII dining chairs in our customer Stephen’s home!

Antique French Louis XIII chairWe found a set of six fabulous antique French Renaissance Louis XIII style dining chairs on one of our recent buying trips in Europe. We guessed (rightly!) that if we bought them then we’d find a customer back in the USA who would love them too.

This is just one of the six chairs, and you can see the blue damask upholstery is a great way to add a dash of elegant color to a dining room.

The armless chairs are crafted with a walnut wood frame and they date to 1900.  They feature a lovely design of gently curved stretchers forming an X shape, accented by a majestic finial in the center of the X.  The strong shape beneath the seat is softened by the gentle blue upholstery.

Obviously Stephen B. in Cambridge, MD, agrees with us that these Louis XIII chairs are fit for a king, because he snapped up the whole set of six!

Traditional dining room with antique Louis XIII chairs

Stephen sent us some photos of the antique chairs in his dining room, and you can see how impressive they look! When I saw his emailed photo, I immediately said: “It’s like he picked the paint based on the chairs rather than the other way around!” Isn’t the color match between the walls and the chairs uncanny? Stephen obviously has an excellent eye for color and he chose well. Stephen commented: “Yes!!! The fabric matches the walls perfectly.”

Antique French Louis XIII chairs in dining room

This is another view of Stephen’s dining room. This room is so beautifully put together. The blue on the walls is a classic color that reminds us of some of the regal salons of Paris. Stephen said he found the other two dining chairs in an antique store in California and he also sleuthed out some terrific buffets for the room online. The chandelier is great too. Often people are nervous about having too large a chandelier over the table and they tend to err on the small side. Stephen went for it with this crystal extravaganza and it is perfect!

All in all, it’s a fabulous room and Stephen has an amazing eye for interior design.  Thank you Stephen for sharing these inspiring photos. We are so happy that you loved the antique Louis XIII chairs, and we think they look superb in your dining room. We wish Stephen many celebratory evenings with friends gathered around that table!

Barcelona dining chair LeeAnn ordered five of the Barcelona dining chairs from us, The antique-inspired chair is very handsomely crafted with a solid wood construction that has a distressed walnut finish. The wood is complemented by an oatmeal linen back with a classic tufted upholstery design and a leather upholstered seat.  The combination of leather and linen looks luxurious and a bold nailhead trim also adds to the traditional appeal.

Curvy X-shaped stretchers crowned with a bold finial make this chair a beauty from top to toe, while the finial and the flourish of the scroll legs gives an architectural look. Although newly crafted, the Barcelona chair truly looks as if it belongs in a noble house in the heart of Old World Europe!

Barcelona dining table LeeAnn also ordered the Barcelona dining table from us. The dining table with an antiqued walnut finish stands on a shapely pedestal that is a great complement to the skirted top. The sturdy table has a round top with an unusual parquet design forming the petals of a flower. Client Spotlight: Antique French Renaissance Dining Chairs

We really admired this set of four antique French Renaissance dining chairs when we bought them and had them shipped back from Europe to America. We were delighted when Iris L. in Texas bought the antique French dining chairs and sent us a photo of them in her home.

Antique French Renaissance Dining Chairs

These are the antique French chairs carved in the Renaissance or Henry II style. The dining chairs date to about 1900 and they are very handsomely designed and carved in solid oak wood. We were impressed by the carvings of two birds nestled in the intricate flower design on the chair back. The pair of lions gazing out from the finials topping the chair posts also add a noble touch. The attractive brass handles on the top of the chairs are typical of antique French Renaissance chairs. In this photo, you can also see the legs with a carved bell or tassel just below the seat. These legs look wonderfully regal!

Antique French Dining Chairs

Iris sent us this photo of the four antique French Renaissance dining chairs in her dining room, and we love how they look! Iris agreed… she said “Love the Chairs.”
The chairs are the perfect match for Iris’ dining room, with that lovely wood floor and the very nice dining table. The traditional appeal of this dining room is hard to beat. The brass handles on the chairs create a nice silhouette ad the gallery of spindles set in the backs of the chairs also make a decorative statement. Overall – it’s a winner!

We are delighted that these beautiful antique French Renaissance dining chairs found such an elegant home. Thanks Iris for giving us a peek into your home!

Client Spotlight: Reupholstered Vintage Sheepbone Chairs

Vintage French Sheepbone ChairsI love this “Reupholstered in Seattle” story. Greg and I found a set of 24 vintage sheepbone chairs that had been used as conference room chairs in France. The vintage chair set dated to the 1930s and each chair was upholstered in a rather ugly green, red and gold striped velour fabric. We optimistically thought of them as “Christmas chairs!” But the frames were so nicely carved we knew they could find a good home.

We had the chairs shipped from France to America and then we decided to split the set up into two sets of 12 chairs. One set went to a designer in Miami, Florida and the other set went to a designer in Seattle, WA. Obviously the designers could see past the upholstery to the true beauty that lay beneath!

Reupholstered Vintage French Chairs

Here are photos of how the chairs turned out for Hoedemaker Pfeiffer the Seattle architecture and interior design company that had their set reupholstered.

They are really great in our opinion!

The red upholstery looks terrific against the oak chair frame and the nailhead trim is so striking.

Vintage French Sheepbone Dining ChairsThey are called sheepbone chairs because of the shapely legs.

This style of chair is called ‘os de mouton’ in French, which simply translates as bone of the sheep because it looks like a lamb’s leg.

This photo shows the chairs in the designer’s client’s dining room. That gorgeous long table is also antique and I love the design of the rug.

Between the reupholstered oak sheepbone chairs, the antique table, and the wood paneled walls, this looks like the setting for some very noble dinner gatherings indeed!

Thanks to our customer Holland Stephens at the interior design company Hoedemaker Pfeiffer for sending us the photos. Holland was happy with how the chairs worked out and we are delighted to see them given a makeover and a beautiful new life!

You can see more vintage French Sheepbone chairs in this customer spotlight, which shows how well the vintage chairs fit into a stylish dining room in California!

Client Spotlight: Vintage French Rococo Chairs

Our customer Fran P. found this beautiful set of vintage French Rococo dining chairs in our listings on Chairish, but she made the smart decision to track down our website EuroLuxHome.com and reach out to me directly for a best price! As Fran only lives about two hours from us in Concord, NC, she decided to drive down to our store in Newberry, SC, in order to pick up the chairs in person.

Vintage Rococo French Dining Chair Set

The set of 6 mahogany vintage French dining chairs dates to 1950 and the chairs are full of charming Rococo appeal. The sensuously curvy lines, the cabriole legs, and the carved curlicues on the mahogany wood frame are the perfect match for the chic pinky beige fabric upholstery. The sweet nailhead trim accents the glamorous silhouette, making these vintage Rococo French chairs a truly delicious treat as a dining room set.

Vintage French Rococo Dining Chairs

It was a real pleasure meeting Fran and her daughter, and you can see how truly wonderful the chairs look in Fran’s dining room. Fran said, “It was such a pleasure to visit, your items are beautiful, and we love our purchase!” We are pleased to have such a happy customer and we agree that this set of chairs is perfect for Fran’s dining room. The faded pink upholstery works very well with the pinks, mauves, and cranberry in her rug and she did a great job of finding such a good set of vintage chairs to blend in both color and style with her mahogany Rococo table. The gorgeous gilded Rococo mirror adds even more glam to room.

Vintage Capodimonte Chandelier ItalianFran says that she is now looking to replace the brass chandelier. I think this vintage Italian Capodimonte chandelier in our gallery would look fantastic. It  dates to 1950 and has an unusual cherub motif that is adorable. The angelic pastel pink and blue colors bring the scenes to life and the metal arms curve in a very elegant way. This relatively rare style of six-arm Italian chandelier doesn’t become available very often and so I wanted to share it with our blog readers because it is just so pretty!

New Italian Chandelier Gold CrystalsOr for even more glam, Fran could opt for this stunning new Italian Murano cut glass chandelier! The Rococo style 8-arm crystal chandelier is dramatically crafted with gold leaves and gorgeous clear glass pendants and clear glass flowers.

Fran has such good taste that I’m sure that any chandelier she chooses will be the ideal match for the vintage French Rococo chairs and her beautiful dining room.  I imagine she will host many elegant dinners in that lovely space!

Client Spotlight: Antique Chairs & Aztec Calendar Stone Table

I’ve got a great story for you today, one involving antique French Renaissance chairs, the famous Aztec calendar stone, and singer Axl Rose, of the band Guns N’ Roses!
Yep, it’s hard to see how those all fit together, but read on… I’ll start from the beginning.

Antique French Renaissance ChairsI met Bernard M. through our antique furniture store on Etsy. He asked about this set of antique French Renaissance chairs but he needed 8 chairs not 6.

The antique French Renaissance chairs Bernard liked are finely crafted in walnut wood with embossed leather upholstery. The 6 chairs date to 1900, carved with shells and swags. They have a lovely floral nailhead trim. So far, so good, but Bernard wanted 8 chairs not 6, so I suggested combining a similar set of antique Renaissance chairs that also featured embossed leather, spindle carvings, and those sexy curvy stretchers. He said yes!

Antique French Chairs in Hawaii

It turns out that all 12 chairs fit around his massive table that came with his new home in Hawaii. Bernard and Carol were in the process of moving from Switzerland to the Big Island, so we had to time the shipping of the chairs to arrive at approximately the same time as their load of furniture. Antique Chairs and Table

When Bernard shared the photos of the chairs, I had to find out about the unique table and he told me that the table is a reduced-scale (7ft diameter) reproduction of the Piedra del Sol. (See this Wikipedia entry for the history of the Aztec sun stone or calendar stone, one of the most famous works of Aztec sculpture.)

“We were told it was a gift — a housewarming present, perhaps — from Axl Rose, of the band Guns N’ Roses, to his band manager, the original owner of the house, which would make it about 25 years old,” said Bernard. “Obviously, unlike the original, it’s not stone! It’s not any synthetic stone either: it’s hollow metal, to keep the weight manageable and to render the very deep indentations of the original, painted to make it look like stone. (I am glad they did not attempt to paint it the way the original was thought to have been painted with very bright reds — for blood – plus blues and yellows, etc.)

Antique Chairs in Hawaii with kitten

“The pedestal does not really fit the style (it’s a classic motif of intertwined leafy branches), but it’s inconspicuous and so it’s OK,” continued Bernard. “There is no “original” for a pedestal for a round table from Aztec culture anyway.

“It was one of the two pieces of furniture from the sellers that we asked remain with the house — as the sellers themselves had obviously done when they had bought the house from the original owner,” said Bernard. “It is not a “comfortable” piece: it looks stunning in the space, but, once one looks at the designs on the top, it becomes disturbing.”
I guess that doesn’t bother the cute kitty stretched out on the antique Renaissance chairs!

Kitchen Window View in Hawaii

Bernard added: “The views are fantastic — I am attaching a pure view picture, taken from the window at the kitchen sink (makes washing dishes more pleasant, but slows down the pace 😉 ”

I love the view too — That would be the life! Thanks Bernard for telling us the story of the table. Your home is beautiful and we hope you continue to enjoy the antique French Renaissance chairs. They look terrific around the dining table. I think you’ll agree those are some well-traveled chairs (France to South Carolina to Hawaii) and that is one lucky cat!

Client Spotlight: Charming Cottage Style

We met Lenore and John M. at the Antique Tobacco Barn in Asheville, NC, while we were there restocking our booth. Lenore and John recently purchased a very charming cottage in Sapphire, NC, that dates to the turn of the century and sits next to a babbling brook.

Antique French Hunting BuffetLenore fell in love with two buffets in our booth and then went on our website and found a beautiful set of chairs to match!

Lenore wanted an impressive buffet for the open dining area to fit with the rustic nature of the exposed logs in the mountain cabin.

I think the antique Hunting Buffet makes an excellent choice! The stunning carved scene of a hunter and stag on the upper cabinet makes this antique French Henry II buffet a work of art as well as a beautiful piece of furniture. The two lower cabinet doors are carved with mythical, dragon-like creatures.
Antique French Carved Henry II BuffetHere is the 8-feet-tall antique Henry II style oak buffet in Lenore’s home. Made in France in 1920, the buffet makes an eye-catching statement with practical storage and serving space. Vintage French Chairs

Peeking into the bottom of the photo you can see the vintage French Renaissance dining chairs Lenore chose.

The set of six French Renaissance dining chairs was made in about 1930. The vintage chairs are beautifully upholstered in red and cream brocade and the spiral turning on the oak legs adds another decorative detail.

Let’s take a better look at the vintage chairs together with the antique buffet in Lenore’s dining area…

antique French dining chairs Renaissance

Doesn’t it look amazing? The red patterned upholstery on the antique Renaissance style chairs adds a pop of color and provides comfortable seating around the long plank-top dining table.

Vintage French Buffet Louis XVI CarvedLenore also chose a pretty Louis XVI buffet for the master bedroom. The vintage French buffet is carved with delightful ribbons, floral designs and coats of arms. The unusual vintage buffet with a rich golden patina on the aged oak was crafted in France in 1930 and nearly the entire front is carved in with beautiful detail. Lenore saw that the mirrored doors and open display shelves of this sideboard made it the perfect candidate for a subtle French translation…. she got creative and turned it into a piece of bedroom furniture!

What a magnificent and unique dresser, with so much space to tuck away your jewels and silk scarves and other favorite pieces of clothing.

Louis XVI antique sideboard bedroomThe bedroom is just off a sitting room with a large fireplace – a wonderful place to enjoy a bottle of wine! The four poster bed is also an antique that came from the personal collection of the original owner of the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. We think the feminine elements on the Louis XVI buffet in combination with the gorgeous four-poster bed combine to make a very romantic master bedroom indeed.

We love it when our customers get creative with using antique furniture in their homes.
Many thanks to Lenore and John for inviting us into your lovely home for a tour!
