Guide to Regency Style Furniture

Regency style furniture is an elegant choice for today’s homes. Here’s how to recognize this popular and unique style of furniture design and see why it is so timelessly appealing.

Whether you are looking for antique furniture or newly crafted antique-inspired heirloom pieces, Greg and I hope you enjoy our guide to Regency style furniture.

The English Regency Period

The Regency period is named for the time in British history when George IV served as Prince Regent, from 1811-1820. As Prince Regent, he was the acting monarch on behalf of his mentally unwell father George III. But the term Regency style has stuck to describe a longer period than the 9 years when he was Prince Regent. It continues through the decade of George IV’s own reign from 1820 to his death in 1830, and sometimes even through to 1937 during the reign of his younger brother William.

This was at the tail end of the Georgian era, which was already a flourishing time in Britain for Georgian furniture design. During the Georgian era, furniture designers such as Thomas Chippendale,  Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite rose to fame. The Regency period continued England’s reputation as an inspiring player in European art, architecture and aesthetics, including furniture design.

The Inspiration for Regency Furniture Design

George IV’s impact on architecture, fashion, and furniture design was huge. Dubbed as “the Prince of Pleasure” he had fine taste, championed the arts, and enjoyed living the good life. He influenced interior design through his own personal tastes and choices, as well as through his royal commissions such as the building of the Royal Pavilion and the remodel of Buckingham Palace.

Theodore Alexander Regency Armchair

The furniture crafted during the English Regency period developed the existing Neoclassical feel of the Georgian era. The Neoclassical look drew from ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian architecture and design. In some ways it was a British interpretation of the French Empire style, with its monumental look, ornate gold ormolu mounts, and classical and military motifs. But, as the Encyclopeadia Britannica points out, Regency style showed more “purity of detail and structure” than the earlier Neoclassical style or the French Empire style.

The Look of Regency Style Furniture

Imagine a period drama adaptation of a Jane Austen novel, and you have the perfect picture of a Regency style dining room, living room or other interior.  The Jane Austen Society of North America tells us that Jane Austen’s famous Regency novel Pride and Prejudice was published in 1813. The air of elegance and refinement that we see in all her books and the movie adaptations of her novels are a great example of the arts and design that flourished during the era.

Jonathan Charles Regency nightstands
Jonathan Charles Regency style nightstands or side tables, newly crafted for the Buckingham collection, with mahogany veneers, crossbanding, floral marquetry and a pierced brass rail.

Regency style furniture is stately and monumental, with a streamlined and symmetrical look that is not frilly or fussy. It is not covered with heavily-carved detail. The ornamentation instead comes from beautiful and exotic woods, dramatic and decorative veneers, and gilded hardware or metal accents.

Typical Regency Style Furniture Features

  • Shapes and motifs inspired by ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian architecture and design. You might see Egyptian heads, images of ancient Greek and Roman gods, and mythological beasts including the Egyptian sphinx and griffins.
  • Clean and symmetrical profiles whether masculine straight lines or classical arches and geometric shapes.
Lyre Back dining chair Regency Style

  • Decorative motifs draw on classical symbols like laurel wreaths and acanthus leaves as well as lyres, which are small U-shaped harps. You will also see rosettes and masks.
  • Lion heads are a repeat motif, especially in brass or metal accents to give a touch of royal pomp to the furniture. Lion heads with rings also serve as handles on drawers.

  • Dark woods create a majestic and imposing feel. Mahogany wood was especially popular with furniture makers at that time, and this strong tropical hardwood was in fashion throughout the Georgian era. The woods were left with a natural and deliciously polished finish to draw attention to the beautiful grain.
  • Exotic wood veneers add a decorative surface effect and include rosewood and zebrawood, perhaps in classic inlay and banding designs.
  • Regal gold ormolu mounts and classical and military motifs.
  • Brass was a popular choice of metal, providing that noble and monumental look and serving as accents and inlays to contrast beautifully with the dark woods.
  • The styles of chair legs include turned legs, x-shaped stretchers, saber legs and legs with classic column looks.
  • Claw and ball feet look majestic while brass or other metal paw feet on chairs and tables also add a decorative touch.

Antique-Inspired New Regency Style Furniture

While antique English Regency style furniture is expensive to buy, many of today’s furniture makers create exquisite pieces that pay tribute to the originals. Often these pieces are scaled down in size to suit the smaller scale of today’s homes compared to the huge rooms in the stately mansions and palaces that King George IV spent time in!

These high-quality antique-inspired pieces by exceptional furniture makers such as Jonathon Charles, Scarborough House, and Theodore Alexander might be smaller in size, but they often use the same traditional hand-craftsmanship techniques as the ones used by the Regency furniture masters 200 years ago.

Greek Key Pattern in Furniture and Decor

The Greek Key pattern is one of the most elegant designs in home decor and furniture. The pattern is a linear design that keeps folding back on itself in a pattern of right angles. The simplicity is very harmonious. It is very popular for any style of home, and it has remained popular for thousands of years!

Photo above by Tracy Murdock Allied ASID      Photo below by Abbe Fenimore Studio Ten 25

The geometric pattern was frequently seen on ancient Greek architecture, tiles, vases and other objects – hence the name. The picture above shows the Greek Key in tiling on a contemporary bath in Los Angeles and the classic effect is lovely.

But despite the name, this motif has actually been seen in many other places, even before the ancient Greeks adopted it! It’s popped up in ancient Egypt and China as well as some older South American cultures.

People probably weren’t reading home decor blogs back in those days! So it seems that the geometric design has a natural appeal for many different people in different ages.

The original name for the Greek Key is a meander pattern, inspired by the very winding River Maeander in Turkey. It is often used as a border for tiling, ceramics, curtains, rugs, cushions and other textiles. But it can also be a filled pattern covering a complete surface. And of course it looks great on traditional architecture, like this fireplace.

There is a lot of Greek Key design and its variations in this photo: in the fireplace, the cushions, the mirror frame. Some might find it a little too much, but it shows how the geometric element can be used and combined in multiple ways. Also, the bold pattern cleverly pulls together an otherwise simple design scheme with a neutral palette.

Console Table with Greek Key pattern

The Greek Key design also looks terrific on furniture. We have several pieces of Greek Key furniture in our online store, including this terrific new Greek Key console table with a rustic pecan finish. It is also available in white and an antiqued walnut finish.

Chelsea House Console Table Gold Greek KeyVariations on the design often turn up in Hollywood Regency style interiors.  I can easily imagine this stunning Chelsea House gold leaf console table with a dimpled glass top in a Hollywood Regency design scheme. The table is quite simple, but the Greek Key accents give it a chic and refined design twist.

Greek Key Wall Sconce Currey and CompanyThe meander motif is easy to add to your home with lighting or other smaller home accessories. This terrific new Currey & Company wall sconce offers an elegant interpretation of the design. With the sleek design and antiqued brass finish, a pair would look superb in a bathroom, powder room, bedroom or hallway.

The decorative and classic Greek Key design works for both more masculine or more feminine design schemes, whether contemporary or traditional. It is often seen in black on white, but any color combinations work, as do tone on tone variations like the sconce here where the raised key gives a textural effect.

What do you think of the Greek Key pattern? Do you have it in your home? Tell us about it in the comments box!

Client Spotlight: Louis Philippe Sideboard

Rod and Vicki F. in Centerton, AR, sent some spectacular photos of the new Louis Philippe sideboard they bought from us. The Louis Philippe sideboard is crafted in solid wood with a wonderful dark rustic pecan finish.  It is made by one of the most reliable furniture makers that we work with and their prices are very reasonable. Here’s a photo of the sideboard:

Sideboard Philippe Dark Rustic PecanWith four doors and four drawers, the sideboard provides plenty of storage. You will also notice the wonderful French cremone hardware that gives this piece an authentic French accent! The sideboard measures nearly eight feet long at 93 inches long, so it is quite an impressive piece of furniture as well as a very practical one.

Rod and Vicki say they are thrilled with the sideboard. That lovely leather chair looks like a perfect spot to curl up with a bourbon and a good book in front of the fire!

Sideboard Louis Philippe

In general the Louis Philippe style is quite unfussy and with little ornamentation, but it puts the emphasis on the beauty of the wood and its grain, especially darker woods. The style harks back to the 19th century, and the reign of Louis Philippe between 1830 to 1848. The simpler lines create a sense of subtle and refined luxury. The Louis Philippe style works perfectly in Rod and Vicki’s home.  I love their wood floors and how beautifully the wood furniture and leather chairs and ottoman work with the flooring. It all looks very smart and luxurious but also welcoming and relaxed.

Thanks Rod and Vicki and we hope you continue to enjoy your Louis Philippe sideboard!

Client Spotlight: Jonathan Charles Santos Tables Klismos Chairs

I loved seeing these photos of the new Jonathan Charles Santos tables and Klismos chairs in our customers’ home. I especially love seeing the living room all beautifully decorated for Christmas! Our clients Dawson and Randy in West Granby, CT, bought the chairs and side tables in two separate purchases more than a year apart, but the pieces blend together perfectly, as does everything else in their living room. This couple has a great sense of style!
Jonathan Charles Santos Furniture in Client home

Let’s start with the chairs in the front of the photo, loyally guarded by Mr. Waggles the dog! The new Jonathan Charles Santos chairs are based on Art Deco styling from the 1920s and the Klismos chair design boasts the curved splayed legs that were a feature of the Klismos chairs first created by the ancient Greeks. Splendid satin rosewood veneer complements the black leather upholstery and ebonized arms and legs add the finishing touch to these chairs.

Jonathan Chalres Santos Ebonized Rosewood tableOn either side of the sofa you can see the new Jonathan Charles Santos Collection side tables. The curved ebonized legs and gorgeous rosewood table top make a great match for the chairs.

The overall effect of these exquisitely crafted pieces is timelessly elegant and serenely sleek.

They are ideal for Dawson and Randy’s living room, which is so nicely tailored with an emphasis on the crisp tones of black, white, and red.  The Christmas tree makes the space look very festive!

Jonathan Charles Santos Furniture in living room

Here’s a view from another angle. Mr. Waggles hasn’t moved an inch! He looks very comfortable surrounded by this chic room design, which also offers a warm welcome thanks to the red tones and the softening effect of the blinds alongside the clean lines of the furniture.

This final view shows the marvelous height of the space. I enjoy the wall art and the panel, and the way the checkerboard tile floor that we can glimpse in the hallway adds to the classic Art Deco feel of this room. I imagine that Randy and Dawson will enjoy some very merry holiday celebrations in this space! And I also love that they included Mr. Waggles and Beanie the kitty in the photos. If you can’t see Beanie, look by the right leg of the console table in the hallway…. Beanie is black and white and well-camouflaged!

Thanks to Randy and Dawson for sharing your photos and getting us all in the holiday spirit, as well as giving us all lots of great home decor ideas with your supremely elegant home.
