Client Spotlight: Antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet

When we delivered an antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet to our customers Mary and Phil, we had no idea what a great treat we were in for while touring their chateau-style home! Read on and see for yourself.

We met Phil and Mary in our antiques store in Newberry. They came to find a buffet to function as a dresser between two closets in their master bedroom. Mary explained they have been building their dream chateau over the past ten years and they are finally starting to pull it all together. They had very specific dimensions and wanted a beautiful antique buffet in a French Country style. After measuring and remeasuring, they decided on our  gorgeous walnut Louis XVI buffet. Phil said that Mary had her eye on a pair of Italian Blackamoor floor lamps too and he wanted us to deliver those as a birthday surprise for her.

When we arrived at their gorgeous home in Greenwood, SC,, we certainly admired the gorgeous stone exterior, which looks much like a French chateau. The bottom first floor has been built into the hill beneath the home and this is the view from the back garden looking out over the lake. It is stunning! Unfortunately the fountains had already been turned off for the winter season, so we didn’t get photos. We’ll have to come make another delivery in the spring! Mary tells us she loves spending time puttering in the gardens she has built around the back side of the home.
Stone entrywayPhil greeted us at the huge solid wood door under a brick archway and showed off the huge iron bell on a rope that functions as a doorbell. It is also how he lets Mary know it is time to come in out of the garden!

Mary and Phil explained they had designed the entire home themselves based on places they had seen in France and have done much of the work themselves – including building the barrel arch supports on which the brick mason worked to create the amazing arched entry hall!

Phil thought the hand-carved and painted Venetian Blackamoors that he bought in our store would grace the entry way to the castle with their candelabra. (We still have a similar lamp number P-49 available.) Phil surprised Mary with the lamps as a gift, and they do help light up the entrance to the keep! However, on a second delivery to bring a vintage Renaissance style console table for the entry way, we found Mary had moved the Blackamoor lamps to either side of the grand stone fireplace. I didn’t actually capture the entire fireplace because it is so tall!

Blackamoor lamps

And here is the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet that the couple chose for their master bedroom. It fits perfectly between the two closets… just as they planned! antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet The walnut French Country style antique buffet has lovely carvings on the door fronts and pretty shaping around the upper glass door. The mirror set in the back of the buffet gives a nice sense of light and reflection. This is a great choice of buffet to repurpose as a dresser in the bedroom!

After we had delivered the Venetian lamps and the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet, Mary and Phil came back to our antiques store to choose some other furniture. Check out my next blog post titled Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Console Table to see more photos of the house from that second delivery. Meanwhile, we hope you agree with us that this couple has a truly beautiful home!

Easy Living with French Country Farmhouse Style

Many of our customers love French Country Farmhouse style, whether they are buying our antique French Country furniture or newly-crafted pieces that stay true to the look. French Country Farmhouse style promises easy living all year round. In summer, the relaxed and casual feel is perfect for long hot days when we want to kick back and feel cool and close to nature. In winter, the cozy and comfortable appeal of this look ensures that you will want to snuggle up and surround yourself with family and friends… and probably lots of lovely warming food, too, as would befit a farmhouse!

This French Country Farmhouse kitchen in Louisville, KY, is a great example of the look, with the traditional rooster on the island. Roosters and chickens are typical of this rustic French decor style, and the look is also associated with good, nourishing food and a relaxed rural way of life. Family and friends are always welcome, and everything is designed to be easy to live with… distressed finishes mean that you don’t have to be precious about your furniture!

For this reason, the style is especially well-suited to kitchens and dining rooms. It’s where everyone gathers to make memories… whether you are sharing small everyday moments over a cup of coffee and a slice of cake, or enjoying a lively feast for in a bigger celebration.

French Country Stool in the kitchenThis photo of our customer Stephanie C.’s kitchen in Kernersville, NC, includes a counter stool from our selection of French Country stools at EuroLuxHome.com.  The newly-crafted stool is beautifully made, with intricate wood carvings, a hand-woven rattan or rush seat, an antiqued blackwashed stain, and the curvy cabriole legs that are typical of French Country style. The silhouette of the stool looks stunning and creates exactly the right mood!

Thanks to the welcoming quality of the French Country Farmhouse style, it also looks great in an entryway or foyer. Notice the muted colors, especially the soft dusky blue which is perfect for the rustic and serene atmosphere. Also notice the combination of natural textures, with woven baskets, a throw pillow on the chair that looks like hessian or flour-sack canvas, a woven rattan seat on the chair, an open weave lampshade, and a wood planked floor.

Antique Buffets in Today’s Homes

Antique buffets are increasingly popular for today’s homes, bought by people who want a unique and very useful piece of storage furniture. In addition to providing versatile storage and serving space, the antique buffets in our online store are beautifully handcrafted, often featuring ornate hand-carvings and elegant glass doors. We find our buffets in Europe — most of them are French — and hand-pick the best to ship them back to the USA. Our customers can’t get enough of these fabulous pieces! Here are some photos of antique buffets making a great impression in our customers’ homes.

Antique French Brittany Buffet with Jadeite Fire King

Debbie and Drew bought this antique French Brittany buffet from us and discovered it was the perfect choice for their kitchen as it was just the right size to fit with the lower ceilings in their space. Debbie found in our store a very beautiful antique Brittany buffet that is on the petite side so it fit exactly where she needed the buffet in her kitchen. As you can see, it was the ideal piece to display her Jadeite Fire King collection, made by Anchor Hocking in the 1940s.

Antique Renaissance Buffet Kitchen Diner

Natalya in California bought this delightfully pretty Henry II Renaissance style antique French buffet from us for her kitchen. Elaborate walnut carvings make a wonderful decorative statement in her kitchen.  The buffet dates to 1900 and as Natalya has three lively young sons running around, a big sturdy buffet like this is perfect for the kitchen. The storage space in the large buffet makes it as practical for Natalya’s family as it is beautiful.

repurposed Antique French Brittany Buffet

This is an antique French Brittany buffet that we delivered to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, Florida. Although the buffet dates to 1880, May wanted us to give it an update and alter it to accommodate a TV for viewing in her bedroom. So we asked a local restoration company to remove the central support between the left and center upper doors, and attach it to the end of the left door. They did a wonderful job and it is now a gorgeous TV cabinet for May. The front of the cabinet is hand-carved in traditional Brittany style with scenes of rural life and figures of a man and woman acting as support columns.

antique French Louis XV Buffet

Many of our customers buy an antique buffet from us for their dining rooms. This is the perfect place for it as it stores all your serving dishes, stemware and silverware, and also provides extra serving space when you are entertaining. For example, Paul and Lane selected this antique Louis XV Buffet from Liege, Belgium, from us for their handsome dining room.

antique French dining chairs Renaissance

Lenore and John bought this super antique French Henry II buffet in the Hunting style from us for their recently purchased cottage in North Carolina. The cottage is more than 100 years old so it makes sense to furnish it with antiques too! A carved scene of a hunter and stag on the upper cabinet makes this buffet a work of art as well as a beautiful piece of furniture. The two lower cabinet doors are carved with mythical, dragon-like creatures which add yet more character to this charming cottage. The vintage French chairs are also from our store.

Then Lenore found another buffet she loved, and she decided to get creative with it for her bedroom! Louis XVI antique sideboard bedroom

The pretty Louis XVI buffet is carved in oak wood with delightful ribbons, floral designs and coats of arms. Crafted in France in 1930, the buffet also features mirrored doors and open display shelves that made it the perfect choice to be repurposed as a bedroom dresser.  There is so much space to tuck away your jewels and silk scarves and other favorite pieces of clothing!

If you want to browse our antique buffets in our store, we are sure you will find plenty of inspiration for your own home. Remember that shipping is always free in the continental US and some parts of Canada, so you can afford to indulge yourself with one of these unique pieces of furniture that are as useful as they are handsome!

Client Spotlight: Antique Art Nouveau Buffet

We were delighted to have an unusual antique Art Nouveau buffet in our gallery, and we were even more delighted that it found such a great home!

Kevin and Candice in Summerville, SC, had been looking for years for the perfect piece to put in the hallway of their new home by the South Carolina coast. Kevin reports that Candice is normally slow to decide on big purchases, so he didn’t expect to find anything when they stopped in our EuroLux Home antiques store in Newberry. However, when Candice spotted the gorgeous Art Nouveau buffet, she stopped in her tracks.

French antique Art Nouveau Buffet

It was the right size and the right color of walnut to match with their collection of Arts and Crafts furniture. It didn’t take Candice very long at all to decide this was exactly the right piece – taking Kevin completely by surprise! Doesn’t it look wonderful in their home?

Antique French Art Nouveau Buffet

We don’t see Art Nouveau buffets very often, as the style was only prominent from approximately 1890 to 1910 before the Art Deco style swept the scene. The Art Nouveau style of furniture is quite feminine and pretty. It features organic motifs, such as flowers, vines, leaves, or fruit, and it is especially known for dramatic curves and swirls. The focus was on craftsmanship as a reaction against growing industrialization and mass production at the end of the 19th century. These rare pieces are especially beautiful and the patina of the walnut on this particular Art Nouveau buffet is just stunning.

vintage Louis XV French Country dining chairs

Kevin and Candice also picked out this set of pretty vintage Louis XV French Country dining chairs for the dining room off the hallway. The vintage chairs date to 1930. The charming chairs are crafted in oak wood and they are upholstered in yellow gold velveteen. The Louis XV chairs boast a delicately shaped back with sweet and subtle carving as well as lovely French cabriole legs.

vintage Rococo chandelier

Finally, Kevin and Candice chose a dramatic vintage French Rococo chandelier to light up the entryway. The 10-light metal chandelier dates to around 1950 and it is lavishly adorned with the decorative embellishments and curvy bracket arms that you’d expect from the Rococo style. What a pretty sight it will all make when the chandelier is hung!

Thank you Kevin and Candice for sending the photos of the antique Art Nouveau buffet in your lovely home. We hope it brings you many years of joy!

What is the Renaissance Henry II Style of Antique Furniture?

If you are looking for a handsome carved antique buffet or dining chairs for your traditional dining room or great room, then you will definitely want to know about the Renaissance Henry II style of antique furniture. You can also check out some regal Renaissance Henry II furniture for sale on our website.

Antique French Buffet Henry II Renaissance BuffetThe Henry II style of antique furniture was influential for much longer than the brief twelve year reign of this King of France from 1547 to his death in 1559. This important furniture style lasted through the reigns of five French monarchs. But the antique Henry II furniture we sell today in this style actually dates to the Renaissance Revival period in the late 19th century, when this very traditional look returned to favor.

Antique Henry II Dining ChairsFurniture in the Henry II style displays the values and aesthetics of the Renaissance, which means rebirth. This rebirth of classical arts and philosophies of ancient Rome and Greece arose in Italy in the 15th century and spread across Europe, influencing architecture and the decorative arts.

Typical decorative details evoked Greek and Roman mythology and architecture, with an emphasis on classical symmetry. You can see the symmetry in these lovely antique Renaissance Henry II style dining chairs crafted in wood and dating to 1900.

Furniture is also adorned with carved arches and columns, stately pediments and attractive finials. Figurative carvings include male and female figures, faces and heads. For example, this gorgeous antique French Renaissance Henry II sideboard or server boasts a crowned Queen carved at the top.

Antique French buffets or servers in the Henry II style are often crafted in beautiful oak or walnut wood, with a rich patina from more than a century of age. The typical buffet will boast columns and spindles, including spindled galleries to serve as plate racks. However, there are many varieties of decorative designs on these unusual pieces.

The furniture also was influenced by the Hunting style, which was led by the French fashion to furnish hunting lodges and chateaux with furniture carved with images of rural life.

Creative antique decor: antique French nightstand in the kitchenHere are some piece of furniture in this style that customers have bought from us. They sent us some wonderful photos showing the furniture in their homes for our customer spotlights.

Our customer Kathleen in Oklahoma bought this French antique nightstand in the Henry II style and she made the clever decision to use it as a kitchen cabinet, providing extra storage and display space.  The geometric walnut marquetry and lovely turned legs are nicely set off by the gray marble top and it looks terrific in her kitchen! See more photos and Kathleen’s full story here.

Henry II style buffets often have bas-relief figures or scenes on the doors. This is a great example, from our client spotlight: Renaissance Chairs and Buffet in Chateau Home, Illinois.

Bob H. in Prairie Grove, Illinois, bought this buffet for his French Renaissance chateau style home. The beautiful buffet is carved with a knight on horseback on the doors. Bob decorated the marble top with a vintage porcelain figure of an apothecary and antique mortar and pestle sets. Can you guess he worked as a pharmacist?

Antique French Dining ChairsIris in Texas bought these oak Henry II dining chairs from us, featuring carvings of birds, and a pair of lions gazing out from the finials. The attractive brass handles are also typical of this style. Renaissance Henry II style antique furniture is all elegant and classically appealing, showing the high quality taste of kings!

Rare Goumain Painted St Eustace Antique French Buffet

It’s exciting for us to tell you about this rare antique French buffet that we just had in stock. It’s the rarest antique buffet that we have ever sold! Here’s a picture of the painted buffet so you can see the full magnificence:

Goumain Antique French Buffet

Signed Goumain antique furnitureThe piece is signed by Goumain on the buffet as well as on the original sculptures, and dated to 1919.

The Maison Goumain Frères was one of the businesses of Emile Guimet, a wealthy French industrialist at the end of the 19th century. He is most famous as the founder of the Musée Guimet in Paris in 1889, a museum of the history of oriental religions and folk traditions. A large part of the museum collections is from the excavations of Antinoë, a city in middle Egypt, carried out by the archaeologist Albert Gayet during 20 years of excavations beginning in 1895.

Antique French Goumain Buffet

The Goumain Brothers specialized in furniture for museums as well as wealthy collectors. Pieces were designed to safely hold precious collections, often with many drawers, which protected the items from light.

St Eustace painting on antique buffet

The painting shows the story of Saint Eustace, a Christian martyr and soldier saint from the 2nd century AD in Rome, Italy. A Roman general called Placidus was hunting in the woods one day when he encountered a large stag with a crucifix lodged in his antlers and he heard the voice of God commanding him to become a Christian. He immediately converted himself, his wife and his two sons to Christianity and took the name of Eustace.

Painted antique French buffet St Eustace

Carved statue antique buffetSt. Eustace then suffered many trials and tribulations along the lines of Job from the Old Testament, including losing his home (the castle seen in the painting) and all of his wealth. He even thought he had lost his wife and sons for a period of time. Although he suffered, he remained constant in his faith and realized that God was testing him.

Eventually he was reunited with his wife and sons, although the entire family was later martyred when they refused to worship the Roman Gods when commanded by Emperor Trajan. The image of Saint Eustace kneeling before a stag became a popular subject in medieval religious art.

St Eustace painting Canterbury Cathedral
Interestingly, the first recorded relics of Saint Eustace were in an altar in the royal Basilica of St Denis, the first Gothic Cathedral ever built in Europe.  (We visited the cathedral in our blog post on our recent antiques buying trip in France.)

There is a large painting in Canterbury Cathedral in England featuring Saint Eustace dating to 1480 (shown left) and Greg believes it may well be the basis of the painting on this piece. Here is a close-up:

St Eustace Canterbury
Hand-Painted antique French buffetSaint Eustace is known as the patron saint of hunters, firefighters, and anyone facing adversity. An interesting tidbit is that Saint Eustace is the reference in the Jägermeister logo of a cross in between a stag’s horns, as the liquor was marketed as the drink of choice for German hunters.

He is also the patron saint of Madrid, Spain. The saint is also featured in the stained glass windows in the Cathedral of Chartres.

It is interesting to conjecture that this buffet was perhaps commissioned for a wealthy patron whose personal saint was Saint Eustace. The buffet not only held his personal material treasures, it served as a reminder that his true “wealth” was in the constancy of his own Christian faith.

We loved finding this very rare antique French buffet by the Goumain Brothers. Now it has  gone to a new home where I’m sure this rare treasure will be enjoyed every day!

Whether our customers choose genuine antique French Country Farmhouse furniture imported from France or newly crafted pieces inspired by the style, they love the refined but comfortable look!

Imagine walking into a charming old French farmhouse deep in the hills of a wine region or one surrounded by fields of golden corn. The kind of decor and furnishings you might see are exactly the kind we expect of this design style.

You might see a large wooden table in the kitchen, possibly crafted in pine or another light or medium wood. Simple furniture features graceful lines and a slightly weathered look, or you will see cabinets with a distressed paint finish.

Things are not too matchy matchy, no matched sets of furniture, yet everything works together. The furniture and accessories have the look of being collected over the years, combining family heirlooms with newer pieces.

Everything is effortless, nothing is trying too hard to impress. Nothing is shiny or too crisp and perfect. These homes look lived in and you know that the people living there are very happy and content indeed!

We have a lot of new, vintage and antique French Country Farmhouse pieces in our online EuroLuxHome.com furniture and home accents store and shipping is always free. For example, this fine walnut vintage French Country sideboard hits all the style points!

Rooster Aubusson Throw Pillow HandwovenIn addition to French Country Farmhouse antique furniture and newly crafted pieces, we are pleased to stock all kinds of vintage and new home accessories that look perfect with this style of decor.

Client Spotlight: Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed

Deliver Antique Brittany BedGreg and I just delivered a French antique Brittany buffet and Brittany bed to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL.

It was one of our slowest deliveries because we had to make a bunch of trips up and down the elevator as May lives on the 14th floor.

But what a spectacular view she has from every room in her lovely home, which is filled with European antiques!

May retired to Pensacola Beach from Connecticut, but in her corporate life, she traveled frequently to Europe.

Pensacola ViewThat is how she fell in love with European interior design, and Paris is her very favorite place to be.

May bought a couple of pieces of furniture from EuroLuxHome.com. The first was an 1880 French Brittany antique bed.

French Antique Brittany Bed

The antique Brittany bed is heavily carved in chestnut wood, with wonderful scenes in traditional Brittany style. The top of the headboard is carved with a man and women relaxing beneath a windmill. You can almost see the sails turning on the windmill because the carving is so detailed! The footboard panel depicts merry country villagers celebrating. Floral carvings and ship wheels also adorn the bed. You can see close-ups of similar carvings in the antique French Brittany furniture currently for sale on our website.

Antique French Brittany Buffet

The antique French Brittany style buffet also dates to 1880 and it is also elaborately hand-carved with scenes of rural life. Figures of a man and woman act as support columns and add a whimsical touch to this beautiful antique buffet.

French Antique Brittany Buffet

These French country folk know how to enjoy themselves! Here they gather round a wine barrel to enjoy themselves after a long day working in the fields!  May contacted me to ask if we could have the Brittany buffet altered to accommodate a TV for viewing in her bedroom.

Converted Antique Brittany Buffet

We had a local restoration company remove the central support in between the left and center upper doors, and attach it to the end of the left door. They did a wonderful job.

The Brittany buffet and bed looked fantastic in May’s bedroom and they now enjoy a fantastic view of the ocean and bay. Bo, May’s charming whippet, was very helpful during the whole delivery. I wish I had taken a photo of him! He was such a pretty dog.

Then we left to drive on to New Orleans… More about that in another blog post! For now, thanks to May for letting us share her stunning views and photos of the antique Brittany bed and buffet in her home.
