Tobi Fairley for Woodbridge: Designer Furniture

Tobi Fairley For Woodbridge Furniture CompanyThe many talents of Interior designer Tobi Fairley have been recruited by Woodbridge Furniture Company to create a special collection that we know our customers will love!

Tobi Fairley is an award-winning and internationally acclaimed interior designer. She focuses on chic, classic, streamlined interior designs, and then gives them a major dose of glamor. She brings the same vision to the furniture she’s designed for Woodbridge.

(She’s perched here on a lacquered blue side table that you can find for sale on our website.)

Woodbridge Tobi Fairley Ellison Writing DeskIf you enjoy Hollywood Regency style, you will love the Tobi Fairley for Woodbridge collection. If you admire style icon Katherine Hepburn, you definitely have to check this collection out.  I’m convinced Ms. Hepburn with her tailored but bold taste would be the first to order some of these pieces! This stunning Tobi Fairley Ellison writing table or desk is a great example. If Hepburn were filming “Woman of the Year” today, this is the desk that would be used by the  the fast-talking journalist character she plays as she squabbles with Spencer Tracy!

Woodbridge Tobi Fairley Ellison Cocktail Table PinkTobi Fairley is known for her work with color and pattern, and you can see the results here in this decadently delicious cocktail table which is crafted with a sleek blush pink lacquered top that is accented by a gold leaf design. The base is an elegant gray, a classic combination of gray and pink that was popular in Art Deco days!

Woodbridge Tobi Fairley White Console TableSometimes the silhouette and superb finish does all the talking, without any need for color or pattern at all. This elegant new Woodbridge Tobi Fairley Gabrielle console table or hall table earns its allure from the white lacquered top on the solid hardwood construction, combined with those seductive cabriole legs which give a little French accent to the otherwise minimalist design.

Woodbridge Tobi Fairley Drop Leaf TableTobi Fairley’s designs have been featured in major magazines from House Beautiful to Traditional Home to Veranda, because her sense of style is so appealing to many different people. This drop leaf Tobi Fairley dining table is a case in point. The incredibly interesting dining table stands on eight multi ringed turned posts that open out when you want to extend the drop leaves. Otherwise the cherry veneered table with brass accents closes down to a fairly narrow profile. This is great if you need a smaller footprint table when you are not entertaining! Notice the carved claw feet that hold crystal-look balls… that is exactly the kind of attention to detail that elevates the Tobi Fairley for Woodbridge furniture designs to another level.

Antiques Shopping in South Carolina? Visit Ashtabula Historic House

If you are antiques shopping in South Carolina, there are so many great places for you to visit along the way, including the Ashtabula Historic House. It’s about 90 minutes away from our Eurolux antiques gallery on Main Street in Historic Newberry, so once you’ve enjoyed looking around Newberry, you can drive over to Ashtabula.

Ashtabula at Christmas

Check their website for current opening hours. At time of writing, the house is open on Sunday afternoons for public tours, with private tours for six or more by appointment at any time. There are also special events. The photo above shows Ashtabula at the annual Christmas celebration and historical reenactment event. The house is dressed for the holidays and guides dressed in period costume tell you about life in the 1800s, accompanied by holiday music.

Ashtabula Plantation 1971 National Register of Historic Places

The two-story clapboard mansion stands in ten acres of grounds, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being on the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. It was built by Lewis Ladsen Gibbes somewhere between 1825 and 1828. He was a widely-traveled man who had studied at the Sorbonne in France and Eton in England. He and his wife wanted a home where they could benefit from the healthy climate of the foothills. The house became a self-sufficient farm and the mansion and plantation were owned by many other people before being given for restoration to The Pendleton Historic Foundation in 1961.

Ashtabula Historic Plantation House

The house is now restored and decorated with antebellum antiques, including pieces that were owned by the families who lived here. The site also includes an original well house and a 1790 brick building that was once a tavern!  As another interesting fact, this land was where the first Jersey and Hereford cattle were introduced into South Carolina.

If you plan a visit, Ashtabula Historic House is three miles east of Pendleton on SC Highway 88.

Alden Parkes Furniture: Updated Classics

We were delighted when we started to carry new Alden Parkes furniture and home accessories, and our customers have been delighted with their purchases too! Alden Parkes is very clever at updating classic furniture designs for today’s homes. The craftsmanship is also very high quality including hand-carved details, using top notch materials including fine woods and solid brass hardware.

Alden Parkes Cocktail TableFor example, this gorgeous new hand-painted Alden Parkes Yin cocktail table or coffee table. It’s a perfect choice if you love Chinoiserie or have an Asian decor theme. The square cocktail table is crafted in wood with a traditional Asian style black finish. A design of bamboo and birds is hand-painted in antique gold on the top of the table. You can see how luxurious it looks and the distressing creates a sense of age.

Alden Parkes Asian Cocktail Table Hand PaintedEqually handsome but in a very different historical style, we love this this Alden Parkes Tudor chest.

Alden Parkes Tudor ChestPart of the fun of this piece is the secret drawer in the base panel! The chest is flanked by hand-turned and carved acacia barley twist corner posts, and it is inlaid with oak burl with a distressed finish.

Alden Parkes ConsoleSome Alden Parkes pieces are real showstoppers, like this Alden Parkes console. The demilune or semi-circular glass top is supported by a sculptural base that reminds us of ocean waves. The Champagne leaf finish is super-glamorous. This console is a wonderful focal point for your foyer or perhaps you’ll enjoy it in a bedroom or even a chic powder room!

Alden Parkes Dining Arm ChairAlso packed with glamour, this Alden Parkes dining chair or arm chair is just one of a wide selection of arm chairs, dining chairs, side chairs and occasional chairs.

Inspired by antique French furniture, this chair is beautifully decorative with its classic honeysuckle design. The mahogany chair is hand-carved and hand-painted, and upholstered in timeless Euro Linen fabric.

The chair is available in two color options: Burnished Silver with gold accents or a soft semi-gloss black with light green and gold hand painted accents. Either way, it’s a treat for your dining room or anywhere that you need a gorgeous arm chair.

In a completely different style, this new Alden Parkes cabinet is a stunning update on Mid-Century Modern furniture.

Alden Parkes MidCentury CabinetThe storage cabinet is designed with clever interlocking sliding doors and you can use it as a cabinet, sideboard, console, or dresser. It is finished with a luscious hand-rubbed walnut stain which gives a warm glow. Solid brass accents provide the perfect final touch.

As you can see, you can find Alden Parkes furniture and home accessories on our website to suit all tastes and decor styles!

I hope you’ll have a browse around and get in touch if you are looking for a specific kind of piece!  We love to help you, whether by phone, email or online chat at our website. There are pieces for your living room, dining room, bedroom or hallway, and a very unusual and decorative collection of Alden Parkes wall mirrors.

Meet Our New Dog, Ernie!

Lost PuppyAround the 4th of July holiday I said to Greg that we wouldn’t have any more dogs when the time comes that Rudy passes on.  (Rudy is 12 now and while he’s still okay, he is getting pretty old and creaky.)

Well, apparently the Universe thought that was funny! When we got home from the gym two days later, this little scared, lost pup was literally on our doorstep. He was terrified of us and seems to have been severely abused, wincing when we tried to pet him. He also had a large bite wound on his side that seemed very infected.

A trip to the vet revealed a very high fever of over 103 degrees from the infection and he was covered in fleas and ticks. The vet gave him a high dose of antibiotics and we had to keep heat on the wound to get it to drain. It looks like he may have avoided a life as a bait dog and ended up in puppy heaven. While I REALLY don’t need another pet, how could we resist?

Puppy Ernie

After multiple vet visits, food, water, medicine and lots of tender loving care, he started to come around. He was still quite timid and unsure of people, so it was down to Minkey to befriend him. Minkey got the first tail wag from the pup and they are great friends now and beginning to play together!

Minkey and the pup

We asked people on our Facebook page to suggest names for him. We got lots of great ideas including Howard, Buddy, Rocky, Lucky, and Baby. Also Zorro, to help him find confidence and courage, and Tip, because his toes are tipped in white. Finally we decided on Ernie because Greg and I like people names for pets.  Something about him seemed like an “Ernie,” and we’ve had a lot of people really get a laugh out of it when they meet him. Ernie learned his name in a day or two and he’s a bit of a local celebrity due to the Facebook posts. People yell “Hey, Ernie!” when I’m walking him, and he always turns toward them to acknowledge the call out.

Meet ErnieHe is still shy but is starting to play like a puppy! He just had one more puppy shot and then he can be introduced to our other dogs. We think it will really help him come out of his shell when he feels like he’s part of a pack. He is exceedingly smart. It took about 2 days to house break him.

We think he’s decided he did alright stopping by our house. He gets a special diet of chicken, eggs and cheese to make him feel welcome, although we can’t wait to switch him over to regular food. Greg says, “He’s eating better than I am right now!”

Ernie the puppy

His latest fun thing is to untie Greg’s shoelaces, particularly while he’s walking!  At first we guessed he was a lab/boxer mix but now we’ve had several folks suggest that he might be a lab / Great Dane mix. Good thing we’d already fallen in love with him before we found that out!

French Heritage Furniture for your French Style Decor

We recently started carrying French Heritage furniture and decor, so if you don’t find a piece you want in our antique French furniture, you can search the French Heritage furniture to see if there is a newly crafted antique-inspired item to your taste! French Heritage Passy Bombe Chest of Drawers

As the name suggests, the French Heritage collection is perfect for anyone who likes traditional French style decor.

French Heritage Vivienne End TableAlthough the furniture draws on classic French taste, the pieces are often given a little contemporary twist to make them perfect for today’s homes.

The French inspiration is authentic. The company’s co-founder is French and his eye for style is inspired by his childhood memories of browsing around Parisian antique markets. He married an American fashion model, so the dynamic duo decided to combine heritage French furniture design with a fashion-forward creative edge.

French Heritage Maison dining chairThe pieces are made with the same European furniture-making techniques and hand-crafted elements that have been traditional skills for centuries. Just one of these lovely pieces will evoke the French lifestyle and set the tone for your French decor.

For example, see this fine new French Heritage Maison dining chair In the always popular French Country Farmhouse or French Provincial style.

The antique cherry finish on the dining chair’s wood frame combined with the lovely striped upholstered seat and cane back make this charming chair a sure pick to become a family heirloom.

French Heritage Lilles Louis XVI BedIf you are a fan of traditional French Country style then you know that it is always elegant and graceful. Even though it is quite decorative, it is easy and comfortable to live with. This pretty new French Country Louis XVI bed is a great example. The French Heritage Maison Lilles bed features hand-carved accents and I think we can all agree that it is fit for a princess!

Kitchen IslandIf you have a French Farmhouse style kitchen, then the French Heritage kitchen islands are sure to capture your attention.

Some kitchen islands have built-in wine racks — of course! The one pictured features a painted finish that contrasts nicely with the natural wood, as well as a marble panel and a cutting board.

French Heritage Maison Gold ChairIf your French taste veers more toward the glamorous than the rustic, then there are plenty of sophisticated French Heritage choices for you.

For example, this golden side chair or dining chair looks like it should live in a chic Parisian salon, or perhaps even the Palace of Versailles!

The  gold finish of the Concerto Monkey Chair enhances the central design of a monkey playing the tambourine. The witty and whimsical design combines with classic cabriole legs and beautiful craftsmanship.

We hope that you will browse our French Heritage furniture and decor collection and find something to enhance your own French-inspired decor!

Model Ships by Old Modern Handicrafts : Ship Ahoy!

If you or any of the people in your life are sailors, boat lovers, historians, military collectors or lovers of the sea, you will want to know about the hand-crafted model ships we now stock from Old Modern Handicrafts.  This is the USS Constitution…. isn’t she wonderful?

USS Constitution Model ShipThese high-quality Old Modern Handicrafts model ships are hand-built to scale using traditional techniques such as the old-school plank on frame or plank on bulk head methods. It can take the craftsmen hundreds of hours to build a ship.  The Modern part of the Old Modern Handicrafts name is because, in combination with the hand-crafted methods, the company also uses the high technology of laser machines to replicate the ship details to the exact scale of the original. Some models are built to museum-quality level and some are exclusive editions with a unique serial number.

Uss Constitution Model Ship Close Up

Here’s a close up of the USS Constitution model ship, otherwise known as Old Ironsides. A legend in the War of 1812, the three-mast frigate had a hull that was 21 inches thick and Paul Revere forged the copper spikes and bolts that held the planks together. The Constitution is now a national landmark and museum, docked in Boston.

HMS Victory Model ShipThis exceptional copper-bottomed ship is the HMS Victory, Admiral Horatio Nelson’s flagship at the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar.  The three large masts are secured using advanced rigging and lines that are knotted and fastened by hand, while the hand-stitched rolled-up sails are made of fine linen.

HMS VIctory Close Up Model Ship

Here is a close up of the deck of the HMS Victory, including the metal cannons!  Every detail is complete right down to the metal anchors and lanterns, a wooden rudder, and lifeboats.

Other model ships include The Titanic, The Cutty Sark, Chinese junk boats, sailing boats, motor boats, and all kinds of other famous ships from around the world. This is the Queen Mary, a very jaunty and decorative cruise ship indeed! Queen Mary Model Ship The Queen Mary took her maiden voyage in 1936, the flagship of the Cunard Line. The thousand foot passenger ship was built to the height of luxury and set a new standard for Transatlantic travel. She may look dignified and majestic, but Queen Mary was fast! During World War II, the Germans apparently offered a huge reward to anyone who could sink the ship because she was too speedy for their submarines to keep up with her!

Viking Longboat Model ShipOther interesting model ships include this replica of the Drakkar Viking long boat, a classic boat used by the Vikings between the 7th and 10th centuries.

This 25-inch model packs a punch with its striped sail, rows of shields along both sides, wooden oars and brass nameplate. The Drakkar, or Viking Longships, had a  maximal speed of around 15 knots, and they were also known as ‘dragonships’ due to the carved dragon-shaped bow, as you can see here.

The Old Modern Handicrafts hand-crafted model ships are built with woods including rosewood, mahogany, teak and Western red cedar, and the metal fittings and details feature chrome, brass or cast metal. They are very good value for money for this very high quality. Each model ship listing on our website includes many photos of the details so you can see just how intricate and true to life the replicas are.

If you have a coastal home or enjoy a nautical interior design scheme, the model ships are also a fabulous choice as decoration, as well as a great conversation starter when you have visitors.  Find all the Old Modern Handicrafts model ships and other nautical accessories on our website. Ship ahoy!

Antique of the Week

We have started to post on social media about our “Antique of the Week.” Sometimes we want to highlight a piece of antique furniture or an antique decorative object because it is especially wonderful! It’s a nice way to showcase some pieces that our customers might like to see. We use the hashtag #AntiqueOfTheWeek on our accounts on Pinterest, Facebook and Google+ so if you aren’t following those accounts already, you can search on that #AntiqueOfTheWeek hashtag.

Normandy Antique French bedWe sometimes tie the antique of the week into the season or topical events. For example, we chose this beautiful romantic French antique bed as our Antique of the Week to honor the royal wedding when  Prince Harry married his lovely bride Meghan Markle.

Sometimes we choose a piece of antique furniture that has recently arrived on the ship after one of our antique buying trips in Europe, and we have just unwrapped it and are especially delighted to share it with you!

Here are some of favorite Antiques of the Week so far if you missed them!

Antique French Renaissance SetteeWe chose this antique French Renaissance Hunting style settee, because it has just arrived from our last buying trip in France. The gorgeous carved flourishes of foliage and floral upholstery also feel so summery. The oak settee dates to 1880 and we also have chairs available to match.

antique Dining chairs flemish

When the clocks went forward, we chose something green to remind us that spring was just around the corner! This elegant set of 6 antique Renaissance oak dining chairs in the Henry II style and upholstered in a green fabric was crafted in Belgium around 1900,

Antique French TrunkSpring also put us in mind of vacation travel, so we chose this antique French trunk with its original iron straps & handles.  You will not want to try to check in this heavy oak trunk at the airport, but isn’t it terrific? It was originally made in 1820 for travel and it has iron caps on each corner to protect it on its voyages. Now it can serve as a rustically decorative storage box and it’s a great conversation point…imagine where this box has traveled since it was first made in France nearly 200 years ago!

Prie-dieu antique French During Holy Week, we chose this beautiful antique French prie-dieu or prayer chair. We found it in a church in Normandy on our recent antiques buying trip to France. It is carved in oak wood, dating to 1890, and we had it reupholstered in red velvet.

Mother Child Dogs statueWe celebrated moms and Mother’s Day with this beautiful 1930 French chalkware statue showing a precious moment between a tender mother, her child, and the adoring family dogs! The sweet and beautifully detailed statue is a real charmer!

Eastlake antique bed 1890 VictorianThis week our Antique of the Week paid tribute to America and American craftsmanship with this antique Eastlake bed, crafted in the USA in around 1890. This classic American treasure boasts stately architectural detailing and floral carving in the mahogany wood.

If you want to see more of our Antiques of the Week over the coming months, search on the hashtag #AntiqueOfTheWeek and treat yourself to a dose of beauty!

Yellow RoomOther boards include design ideas that we love, and simply delicious food, drink and recipes. Some boards are dedicated to color schemes, for example red rooms and interiors, blue decor, and yellow rooms.

This buttery yellow formal living room works really well with the darker antique and paintings and the screen in the corner, and the paint color is Benjamin Moore HC-4 Hawthorne, if you would like to know!

We are keen gardeners, so we also have a board on beautiful gardens. This board shows some of our garden photos but mainly it is of gorgeous gardens around the world, and also great ideas for landscaping and making the garden even lovelier! This wheelbarrow planter makes me look forward to summer!

WHeelbarrow planterOf course we have a travel board too, which especially focuses on Europe because we travel so much in Europe to buy antiques to ship back to the USA!

Newberry Groove ‘N BrewFest

Groove n brew logo NewberryThe first ever Groove ‘N BrewFest is a 1970s/80s music and craft beer festival that will rock Downtown Newberry, SC, on Saturday, April 7, 2018.

I am excited about it because I am Vice-President of the Newberry Downtown Development Association, a collection of enthusiastic residents, business and property owners who want to make Downtown Newberry a better place.

Earlier this year, we held a retreat where we challenged ourselves to do something really big to improve our local economy. We decided that if our local historic theatre, The Ritz, was a fully-functioning business as a concert venue/movie theatre, that it would significantly increase foot traffic Downtown, which would in turn, attract more businesses to locate here.

So we decided to hold a street festival as a fundraiser to collect a pool of funds for economic development grants. We are hoping that the Newberry Community Players, who own The Ritz Theatre, will be our first grantees. We’d like to be able to purchase them a permanent sound system so that they can have more events, raise more money, and little by little restore and revitalize this historic Art Deco building from 1936.

Groove n BrewFest Newberry Poster

This is the story behind Groove ‘N BrewFest — a 70s/80s music and craft beer festival that will happen on Saturday, April 7th from 1 pm to 10 pm in Downtown Newberry. We will have 25 regional craft beers and a wide variety of food trucks.

humanbowling Newberry SC

I am also excited about the games – human bowling, a giant Operation game, and a bungee jumporee where you can jump 20 feet in the air – that should be a lot of laughs!

Greg has headed up the music committee and we’ll have bands playing 70s and 80s music on an outside stage all day. J-E-T opens the day from 1 to 5 pm.

All festival-goers are encourage to dress in 70s/80s duds, so we’ll have karaoke and costume contests hosted by Z93, a local Columbia radio station, between 5 and 6 pm. From 6 to 10 pm, 121 Band will continue to rock out your favorite 70s/80s hits.

The festival and outside music is free.

Inside The Ritz Theatre, our headliner bands will play for an additional ticket. Heartbreaker is a Heart/Led Zeppelin tribute band and they will play from 6 to 8 pm. Rumours ATL is a Fleetwood Mac tribute band and they will play from 8 to 10 pm. Greg and I have traveled quite a few times around the Southeast to see Rumours ATL as they are excellent and really give a great show! If you love Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, you will have a fantastic time! Advance purchase tickets are selling fast as they are a great value: Get tickets here
