Florida Road Trip 3: Antique Henry II Dining Chairs

After Greg and I decided to take a road trip to Florida to make a delivery to the Orlando area, Katrina in Alva, FL, purchased this handsome set of six antique Henry II dining chairs in our Etsy store. We were delighted that we could include this delivery to the Ft. Myers area on the way to visit my home town of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

antique French Henry II dining chairs

We love this style of antique Renaissance Henry II dining chairs and buy as many sets as we can find during our antiques buying trips to France. We recently sold a similar set to the television show, Ozark, and you can read about that delivery trip here.

This particular set of antique Henry II dining chairs is especially nice as the scale is a bit larger than most. These antique chairs are carved in walnut and they show the patina of age on the wood frames. This is the kind of finish that you cannot buy in new furniture. The dining chairs date to around 1890 so they have certainly earned their patina!

embossed leather on antique Henry II dining chairs

The original embossed leather featured was especially detailed. There are scrolls, floral elements, roaring lion faces and even dragonflies!

When we pulled up to this amazing estate right on the river, we were stunned by the absolutely beautiful location! Katrina explained she is the caretaker of her brother’s estate and the whole family lives on the compound – her children were out mowing the grass when we pulled up. There is a huge pool with a water slide and waterfall on the side of this palatial home that faces the river.

And what a stunning view indeed! It seemed like paradise to us. Katrina explained that her brother had won the lottery after much hardship in his life and he has given her free reign to decorate the estate. Luckily for us, Katrina loves heavily-carved antique furniture – our specialty.

We ooohed and ahhhed over several pieces in her home on the way to place these regal chairs at a wrought iron table in the middle of the great room, right off of the kitchen. They fit right in with her Renaissance style decor!

She had recently painted the wall black and it really does create quite a dramatic effect with the marble floors and ornate, hand-carved built-in bookcases and mantel. The dark leather on the antique dining chairs blends in nicely with the black leather upholstery on the sofas in the great room.

Greg and I reminded ourselves to stop and buy a lottery ticket as we drove out of the compound gates! Next stop was my hometown of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida!

As we drove away from the family living in their beautiful estate, we were delighted to know that the set of French antique Henry II dining chairs had found such a happy home.

Florida Road Trip 2: Antique Louis XVI Dining Chairs

I hope you enjoy the next step in our Florida road trip… to deliver a set of antique Louis XVI dining chairs. In my last blog post I wrote about our trip to South Florida — where I grew up — to deliver a vintage Renaissance cabinet. Greg and I often joke that once we decide to take a road trip, it seems we always end up selling other pieces along the route. In this case, we were already heading to Lakeland, Florida, when Twila, an interior designer, reached out to us about a gorgeous set of twelve antique Louis XVI dining chairs she was interested in buying for her client Margaret in Jacksonville.

Margaret immigrated to the United States from Poland, and as she grew up in a home filled with beautiful European antiques as a child, it has been her dream to have her own French Chateau-inspired home.

Chateau style home in Florida

As we drove up to the circular cobblestone driveway to Margaret’s house, we certainly were impressed with the classic French architectural styling of the home, complete with wrought iron railings and a romantic balcony! The formal landscaping just adds to the je ne sais quoi!

Dining Room with Antique French Louis

The set of twelve antique Louis XVI chairs that Margaret and Twila selected are hand-carved in walnut, crafted with a rich butterscotch leather upholstery, and date to circa 1890. They look amazing with the large circular antique table in the dining room. The butterscotch leather looks very pretty with the soft golden yellow walls and draperies.

The formal dining room also features a gorgeous Louis XV French Country Sideboard and a large, hand-carved Louis XV French Country mirror that pair perfectly with the antique table and antique chairs. The pretty herringbone parquet flooring and the romantic candelabra sconces and large crystal chandelier add more formal elegance, while the view of the formal garden through the series of large French doors steals the show!

If only we could stay for a sumptuous French feast of Chateaubriand and linger over an excellent Bordeaux!

We hope that Margaret enjoys the antique Louis XVI dining chairs in her beautiful home and that they conjure up the old European mood that she enjoys!

Florida Road Trip: Vintage Renaissance Cabinet

There is always an order that starts a road trip and in this case it was a vintage Renaissance cabinet! Linwood in Lakeland, FL, purchased a massive vintage Renaissance cabinet in our Ebay store, but one important detail was that the furniture needed delivery on a Thursday, Saturday or Sunday. Our delivery company couldn’t guarantee a specific day of the week for delivery, as it just depends on the other orders in the area as to when deliveries are routed.

I was born in South Florida, and since Lakeland isn’t too far from Jupiter, FL, where both my dad and my best friend, Cheryl, live, we decided a road trip to Florida was in order. Greg and I like to get out of the office, meet our customers, and see where “our” pieces will find their forever homes. So we hopped into the truck to deliver this amazingly handsome and heavily-carved cabinet on one of the days that our customer needed it to arrive!

Linwood said he chose the cabinet because he wanted a massive, heavily-carved piece to fill up that big wall in his living room. We agree the vintage Renaissance buffet, carved in oak and dating to the 1930s, looks terrific with the traditional brown leather sofa with nailhead trim. Linwood and his charming wife, Amy, had the Oriental style carpet rolled up to make it easier to bring in the vintage Renaissance buffet, but we can image how opulent the room will look when they roll out the red carpet!

Thanks for your purchase, Linwood and Amy, and for giving us such a great excuse to take a road trip back home to South Florida! And as it always happens, once we decide to take a road trip to deliver a piece, then it seems we always sell a few other pieces along the route. In this case, the delivery to Lakeland, FL, ended up with stops in Jacksonville, the Ft. Myers area, and St. Simons Island, GA – I’ll share those stories in other blogs!

Meanwhile, I’m very happy knowing where the vintage Renaissance cabinet has found its new home!

Client Spotlight: Reclaimed Wood Dovetail Sideboard

Mary G. found this colorful sideboard made from reclaimed wood in our Houzz store. As soon as she purchased it, she let me know the owners of her high-rise apartment in Boston were very particular regarding the deliveries. It did, in fact, turn out to be quite the saga! EuroLuxHome.com hung in there, making sure this charming sideboard was safely delivered, despite the building’s highly unusual red tape, and the fact that it was finally delivered on a Friday the 13th with a full moon to boot!

Dovetail Furniture Reclaimed Wood Sideboard

Mary was so pleased that she immediately wrote, “The sideboard was finally delivered today at noon.  It was worth waiting for!  Thank you for all your help in making my purchase happen, despite difficult circumstances.” She also included two photos of the piece in her home and I agree, it looks phenomenal!

Dovetail Furniture reclaimed wood sideboard

This sideboard is our item DT-4705 and is crafted from reclaimed wood by Dovetail Furniture so that each piece is completely unique. Dovetail specializes in classic furniture design made with great craftsmanship, and it offers innovative updates on vintage styles. The Dovetail Furniture on our website is also very competitively priced.

Dovetail sideboard reclaimed wood

Because of the reclaimed wood and craftsmanship, each piece will vary from the next so that each one is a work of art. However, it seems Mary received the perfect one to match her adorable oil painting of an elderly man and woman looking very comfortable in their home, looking out of the upper floor windows over what looks like an old American town or charming European city. I especially love noticing that the color orange of the gentleman’s sweater in the painting can be found on the sideboard – along with blues, greens, and whites to tie it all together. The hand-crafted Mexican figure holding flags from Mexico and California add a further whimsical, rustic touch – and more pops of color!

Thanks so much Mary for sharing photos so we can see where this handsome reclaimed wood Dovetail sideboard has found its forever home!

Client Spotlight: Our Antique French Chairs on Ozark TV Show

We recently had the pleasure of selling a set of antique French chairs to the production set of the Ozark TV show, meaning that our antique chairs will be seen on screen!

The chairs will be used in the third season of the Netflix series, and we have been told that the stars of the show, Laura Linney and Jason Bateman, will sit in them. We were pretty excited to hear this because Greg and I just love Ozark.

So, here’s how it happened. We’ve been getting quite a few calls from T.V. and movie production people needing antique furniture for their film sets. The Ozark set designer found us online and called up, asking if we ever rented antiques for filming purposes. We said we were open to it, and then she told me the name of the show. Wow!

antique French Henry II dining chairs

These are the chairs they wanted, a set of twelve antique French Renaissance Henry II dining chairs. They were made in France around the year 1900, and the chairs are crafted in walnut wood and embossed leather in the elegant Renaissance Henry II style.

The embossed leather was just beautiful, adding both visual and textural interest to these handsome dining chairs.

embossed leather on antique French Henry II dining chair

Usually the producers would just rent the furniture on a weekly basis, but in this case they needed to keep the antique chairs for several months, so they decided to buy them outright.

You can imagine how much we were looking forward to delivering the chairs. We were definitely going to make this delivery ourselves! So, we loaded up the van and headed off to Doraville, Georgia, where the show is filmed. We had to deliver them to the props warehouse, which is devoted solely to the Ozark show and full of props used in filming the show.

Ozark TV Show Set Props Warehouse

The attendant explained to us that they have to keep all the props they’ve used in the first two seasons in the warehouse, just in case they need to do a flashback in time or film a memory scene. They might have to recreate the same sets used even in previous seasons, so all the props are kept safely in storage.

The delivery itself was uneventful. We were really hoping to run into Jason Bateman and Laura Linney.  Jason Bateman is one of our favorite actors. If you’ve never seen Extract, The Switch, or The Break-Up, you must watch them! We just love his deadpan humor. But alas, we didn’t see any actors. It was just a warehouse.

Of course Greg and I usually make a bit of a holiday out of deliveries as we use them as an excuse to get out of the office. Greg is a big Braves fan, so we made sure the delivery coincided with a Braves game at the new stadium.

We are very sad to find out that the third season of Ozark will actually be the last! The third season premiere date is still unknown, but whenever it is, you can be sure that we will be watching each scene with a keen eye looking for our antique French chairs!

Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Console Table

Our customers Mary and Phil returned to our EuroLux antiques store in Newberry to pick out a vintage console table to go beneath a hand-painted antique trumeau mirror that Mary had found at an auction house.  The couple had previously bought an antique buffet from us and a pair of Italian floor lamps for their beautiful chateau style home, as you can see in my previous blog post: Client Spotlight: Antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet.

Delivering vintage console to customer home

We were very happy to revisit their home to deliver the console table they chose. Here is the front of the house. We certainly admired the gorgeous stone exterior, however the photo doesn’t actually give a sense of how large the interior space is. Much like a French chateau, Phil and Mary have built a labyrinth into the side of a hill and this photo only shows the second and third stories. The entire lower level is built into the hillside.

vintage console table

Here is the French Renaissance style vintage console table or sideboard that the couple chose for the entryway. They bought it from us to go beneath the very large, antique, hand-painted trumeau mirror that Mary discovered at an auction house.  The mirror still needs to be hung, but we propped it up on the console table just to get the effect and to snap a photo. The ceilings are so high, but I captured just a bit of the beautiful antique wrought iron fixture hanging above it.

antique dining room furniture

With your back to the console table, you look through another arch into the dining room so that diners will be able to see themselves in the trumeau while enjoying Phil and Mary’s hospitality!  Mary had just hung the handsome and huge antique iron chandelier over the antique dining table. A pair of antique hunting paintings and antique Louis XV sconces add to the feel of the chateau.  The carvings on the console table work well with the heavily carved antique Renaissance dining room chairs. The chairs are scheduled for re-upholstery with new fabric soon and one chair is lying on the floor in the photo as Phil asked for our instruction on how to tighten the joints of all of the chairs. This is a dynamic DIY duo for sure!

Traditional Bathroom

During the tour of their lovely home, I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of Mary’s amazing soaking tub in the master bathroom with a gorgeous view of the woods behind their home. I am truly jealous of that tub!

During this second delivery, Phil mentioned that he was now searching for a pair of thrones to sit in front of the huge stone fireplace in the living room. We’ve sent photos by email and hope we’ll be delivering the antique hunting thrones soon so that we can take more photos of this amazing chateau that Phil and Mary have built with such love and dedication. Meanwhile, the vintage console table has found the perfect home!

Client Spotlight: Antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet

When we delivered an antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet to our customers Mary and Phil, we had no idea what a great treat we were in for while touring their chateau-style home! Read on and see for yourself.

We met Phil and Mary in our antiques store in Newberry. They came to find a buffet to function as a dresser between two closets in their master bedroom. Mary explained they have been building their dream chateau over the past ten years and they are finally starting to pull it all together. They had very specific dimensions and wanted a beautiful antique buffet in a French Country style. After measuring and remeasuring, they decided on our  gorgeous walnut Louis XVI buffet. Phil said that Mary had her eye on a pair of Italian Blackamoor floor lamps too and he wanted us to deliver those as a birthday surprise for her.

When we arrived at their gorgeous home in Greenwood, SC,, we certainly admired the gorgeous stone exterior, which looks much like a French chateau. The bottom first floor has been built into the hill beneath the home and this is the view from the back garden looking out over the lake. It is stunning! Unfortunately the fountains had already been turned off for the winter season, so we didn’t get photos. We’ll have to come make another delivery in the spring! Mary tells us she loves spending time puttering in the gardens she has built around the back side of the home.
Stone entrywayPhil greeted us at the huge solid wood door under a brick archway and showed off the huge iron bell on a rope that functions as a doorbell. It is also how he lets Mary know it is time to come in out of the garden!

Mary and Phil explained they had designed the entire home themselves based on places they had seen in France and have done much of the work themselves – including building the barrel arch supports on which the brick mason worked to create the amazing arched entry hall!

Phil thought the hand-carved and painted Venetian Blackamoors that he bought in our store would grace the entry way to the castle with their candelabra. (We still have a similar lamp number P-49 available.) Phil surprised Mary with the lamps as a gift, and they do help light up the entrance to the keep! However, on a second delivery to bring a vintage Renaissance style console table for the entry way, we found Mary had moved the Blackamoor lamps to either side of the grand stone fireplace. I didn’t actually capture the entire fireplace because it is so tall!

Blackamoor lamps

And here is the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet that the couple chose for their master bedroom. It fits perfectly between the two closets… just as they planned! antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet The walnut French Country style antique buffet has lovely carvings on the door fronts and pretty shaping around the upper glass door. The mirror set in the back of the buffet gives a nice sense of light and reflection. This is a great choice of buffet to repurpose as a dresser in the bedroom!

After we had delivered the Venetian lamps and the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet, Mary and Phil came back to our antiques store to choose some other furniture. Check out my next blog post titled Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Console Table to see more photos of the house from that second delivery. Meanwhile, we hope you agree with us that this couple has a truly beautiful home!

Client Spotlight: Antique French Louis Philippe Chest of Drawers

WE were delighted when previous customers Jenni and Chris returned for another purchase: A beautiful antique French Louis Philippe chest of drawers. The Louis Philippe style of antique furniture is very refined and elegant, as you can see at the link showing furniture in this style for sale in our online store.

We met Jenni and Chris nearly 15 years ago when they wandered into our very first sales location outside of Newberry, SC. At that time they purchased a set of six sheepbone chairs, four of which they still use at their dining table, while two are perfect at the games table in the living room. I forgot to snap photos in those rooms when we made a delivery to the couple’s house, but here are some examples of sheepbone chairs (in French called Os de Mouton – ooh la la!) that we currently have for sale in the Gallery.

After so many years of enjoying their antique sheepbone chairs, Jenni and Chris decided to visit our current gallery on Main Street in Newberry in search of a piece of furniture to provide more storage in their foyer. After searching through our buildings, the delightful pair were drawn to two different Louis Philippe chest of drawers.

Antique French Louis Philippe chest in entryway for storage

Although it was a difficult choice, Jenni and Chris finally decided on the exquisite burled walnut chest dating from circa 1870, which so perfectly exemplifies the Louis Philippe style with its gorgeous burled walnut grain as decoration. The antique Louis Philippe chest makes a charming entryway piece and looks so inviting decorated with the family heirloom antique clock, a few blue and white pieces, and a pretty table lamp. You can even see a peep of those sheepbone chairs through the hallway in the dining room at the back of the photos. And I especially love the live green plants in the foyer too – proving Jenni and Chris have green thumbs in addition to excellent taste!

This is the outside of their house, which was a very welcoming sight when we delivered the antique chest of drawers.  In case you’re not familiar with the classic Louis Philippe style, I’ll share a little French furniture history with you.

King Louis Philippe (1830 – 1848) was related to the Royal Bourbon family through the brother of Louis XIV, and survived the French Revolution in 1789 by supporting the liberal factions in opposition to his relatives, the Royal family. Eventually the crown was passed to Louis Philippe, who took the title King of the French rather than the title King of France, which had been used by his former Bourbon relatives. Louis Philippe fashioned himself a King of the people, rather than of a state, and was called the Citizen King and bourgeois monarch. He ruled in an unpretentious manner and avoided the pomp and lavish spending of his predecessors.

This led to a radically different style of furniture and decorative arts than had been seen in the French court in the past. The Louis Philippe style focused on the natural beauty of the wood itself, using the patterns of the wood grain as the decorative element, and emphasizing simple, clean lines and curves. As machinery was just beginning to be used for mass production of furniture, manufacturers found this simple style easy to create for the rising middle class, who had considerable income to spend. Eventually, however, the fickle masses turned against their champion and revolted in 1848. Louis Philippe was forced to abdicate, the Bourbon monarchy of France came to an end, and the Second Empire of France began.

This is the other chest of drawers that Jenni and Chris considered but finally didn’t buy, so it’s still available in our online store at time of writing. It’s another great example of the Louis Philippe style.

Antique French Chest of Drawers Louis PhilippeThe burled walnut wood and marble top add great decorative interest to the antique Louis Philippe chest of drawers, which dates to 1870. It is accented by elegant gold tone drawer handles and locks and at just over 4 feet wide, the antique chest of drawers provides a very distinctive storage space for your favorite silk and cashmere scarves or for household items. The classical lines and high quality burled walnut and marble create a sense of timeless grace.

You can find this and other antique furniture in the Louis Philippe style here on our website.  We were very happy to see Chris and Jenni again and we look forward to helping them out next time they are furniture hunting!

Client Spotlight: Antique French Louis XIII Dining Chairs

We have a lovely treat for you today, with photos of our antique French Louis XIII dining chairs in our customer Stephen’s home!

Antique French Louis XIII chairWe found a set of six fabulous antique French Renaissance Louis XIII style dining chairs on one of our recent buying trips in Europe. We guessed (rightly!) that if we bought them then we’d find a customer back in the USA who would love them too.

This is just one of the six chairs, and you can see the blue damask upholstery is a great way to add a dash of elegant color to a dining room.

The armless chairs are crafted with a walnut wood frame and they date to 1900.  They feature a lovely design of gently curved stretchers forming an X shape, accented by a majestic finial in the center of the X.  The strong shape beneath the seat is softened by the gentle blue upholstery.

Obviously Stephen B. in Cambridge, MD, agrees with us that these Louis XIII chairs are fit for a king, because he snapped up the whole set of six!

Traditional dining room with antique Louis XIII chairs

Stephen sent us some photos of the antique chairs in his dining room, and you can see how impressive they look! When I saw his emailed photo, I immediately said: “It’s like he picked the paint based on the chairs rather than the other way around!” Isn’t the color match between the walls and the chairs uncanny? Stephen obviously has an excellent eye for color and he chose well. Stephen commented: “Yes!!! The fabric matches the walls perfectly.”

Antique French Louis XIII chairs in dining room

This is another view of Stephen’s dining room. This room is so beautifully put together. The blue on the walls is a classic color that reminds us of some of the regal salons of Paris. Stephen said he found the other two dining chairs in an antique store in California and he also sleuthed out some terrific buffets for the room online. The chandelier is great too. Often people are nervous about having too large a chandelier over the table and they tend to err on the small side. Stephen went for it with this crystal extravaganza and it is perfect!

All in all, it’s a fabulous room and Stephen has an amazing eye for interior design.  Thank you Stephen for sharing these inspiring photos. We are so happy that you loved the antique Louis XIII chairs, and we think they look superb in your dining room. We wish Stephen many celebratory evenings with friends gathered around that table!

crystal ship chandelier in dining roomHere is the chandelier in Konnee’s Florida home. She decided to hang it in her dining room. “I love it,” Konnee wrote to us. “I knew I would and it looks great.” We agree! It especially looks terrific against Konnee’s wood ceiling, which evokes the wood timbers of a ship on the high seas! Here is another angle on the ship chandelier in Konnee’s dining room. Look at how brilliantly it shines with all the gazillions of crystals! It looks amazing and we are so glad that she sent the photos because you can really see just how spectacular the sailing ship light looks in real life. It is the perfect finishing touch for a summer coastal cottage or a cabin on the lake,  and a great choice for any nautical themed decor. It will brighten up any room, whether you want to say “ahoy matey” in a beach themed bathroom, create a talking point and focal point in a living room,  or welcome guests with a jaunty piece of decor in your entryway.

Seeing the crystal sailing ship chandelier in Konnee’s home has made my day and put a smile on my face, which is what beautiful and unique design should always do. It’s also put me in the mood for spending a nice relaxing time by the ocean. Greg… when can we leave for summer vacation?
