Top 10 Antiques and Home Decor Blog Posts 2017: Part 2

In my last blog post I gave you a roundup of the first of our top home decor and antiques blog posts of 2017. Here’s Part 2 with the remaining five of our top 10 posts from last year. It’s been interesting remembering some of the things we talked about in 2017 – we hope you enjoy seeing the highlights too!

6. Antique French Hunting Nightstand Transformed to Side Table

Antique French Hunting Nightstand cabinetAs part of our series of client spotlights, I told you about our creative customer Sarah K, in Seattle, WA, who bought an antique French Hunting nightstand from us to use in the living room rather than the bedroom! The French Renaissance Hunting style nightstand looks terrific repurposed as a side table in her living room and it provides useful storage space. See more photos and the full story in the Antique French Hunting Nightstand blog post.

7. Vintage Louis XV Vanity Chest of Drawers: Race Against Time

Vintage French Vanity

We had a fun delivery job when Interior designer Debbie bought this pretty vintage Louis XV marble-top vanity chest of drawers with mirror for her client in Sarasota, FL. Greg and I had a race against time to drive down and deliver the 1930 vintage French Rococo mahogany chest of drawers to the customer’s guest room before a guest arrived to visit! But we made it in time and the chest with the beautiful white marble top looks perfect. See more photos of the stunning house and the vintage vanity in the Louis XV Vanity Chest of Drawers blog post.

8. The Craft of Distressed Furniture

Jonathan Charles distressed deskSometimes our customers want new pieces that just look old. We have plenty of beautiful antique-inspired furniture that is newly crafted but with an aged and distressed look, so we are happy to help out! In my blog post Distressed Furniture I explained what to look out for when buying newly distressed furniture and how some of our furniture makers work their magic to achieve their distressed furniture finishes. I followed up with posts on the casual appeal of weathered furniture and the beauty of verdigris and rusted metal decor.

9. Timeless Regency Style

Regency style Decor

Regency style remains popular in furniture and home design as it is so classic and beautiful to live with.

We have many antique-inspired pieces in our online furniture store that draw on the Regency style and I know how much our customers admire the look, even if they don’t have a grand hallway like the one in the photo!

So, as part of our blog post series called Learn History and Styles, I wrote about the Timeless Majesty of Regency Style Furniture, explaining the origins and the key design elements to look for.

10. Antiques Buying Trip in France, England and Belgium

Lincoln Medieval townWe had a wonderful adventure this year with one of our antiques buying trips to Europe. We took our blog readers along for the ride too, to see the treasures we found and to see the sights!

We did quite a lot of driving around several countries and we did a very great deal of packing and unpacking various vans and containers.

By the end of this trip, we could compete in the Olympics, if the Olympics had an event to pack as many antiques as possible in the smallest possible space!

If you don’t believe me, check out the post on buying vintage chandeliers in Belgium, where Greg showed off his mad truck packing skills to fit 85 chandeliers in the back of one van.

These are some of the other blog posts about the antiques buying trip in Europe, and we hope you enjoy seeing the photos of the places as well as the antiques we found:

Antique Religious Treasures in Belgium

Antiques Hunting around the fabulously beautiful Lincoln Cathedral in England

Well, I guess I cheated a little there by sneaking in the other posts on the buying trip, but it is hard to pick just one from the entire adventure!

We are looking forward to another adventurous year and we hope that you have a wonderful 2018 too!

Top 10 Antiques and Home Decor Blog Posts 2017: Part 1

We’ve had a lot of good news this year and shared some great photos of our antique furniture in our customers’ homes. Now, as the year turns, it’s time to remember our most popular antiques and home decor blog posts from 2017! Here is the first half of our Top 10 posts of the year…

1. Rare Goumain Antique French Buffet

Goumain Antique French BuffetLast year we sold the rarest antique piece we have ever had in stock! This rare 1919 antique French buffet is signed by Goumain on the buffet as well as on the original sculptures, and it is magnificently painted with a scene that shows the story of Saint Eustace. To see the full story of the soldier saint Saint Eustace as well as more detailed photos, see the Rare Goumain Painted St Eustace Antique French Buffet blog post.

2. Voted into the Top 30 Antique Blogs

Top 30 Antiques Blog FeedspotWe began 2017 with good news when Feedspot wrote to say that their panel had selected this Letters From EuroLux antiques blog as one of the Top 30 Antique Blogs on the web.

Greg and I were delighted, as we’ve been running the blog since 2011, talking about the antique furniture we buy in France and other parts of Europe and bring back to the USA. The blog reflects our motto “Fine antiques for regular folks!” and we also talk about general home decor.

In March, we heard that we were again named Best of Houzz Customer Service with our 100% customer satisfaction score, in addition to our Recommended badge given to the top-rated pros on Houzz. Next we celebrated when the new Hobbs Germany collection won an Honorable Mention in the European Product Design Award 2016. We’re thrilled to be U.S. distributors, and you can see the unique wine-inspired collection here.

3. Client Spotlight: Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed

French Antique Brittany BedAs part of our series of client spotlights, I wrote in February about a delivery of antique furniture Greg and I made to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL.

It was one of our slowest deliveries ever as May lives on the 14th floor and we had to make many trips up and down in the elevator! But what a spectacular view she has from every room in her lovely home, which is filled with European antiques.  May purchased this fine antique French Brittany bed from us as well as an antique Brittany buffet which we converted for her to accommodate a TV for viewing in her bedroom. See the full post here for more photos of May’s home and the gorgeously carved 1880 antique bed and buffet.

4. Woodbridge Table for Knight Kiplinger

Marseille console table hallwayAnother client spotlight gave us a glimpse into the home of the celebrated economic journalist and author Knight Kiplinger. You have probably seen or heard him as a guest on many TV and radio shows like the Today Show, Charlie Rose, Diane Rehm Show, and CBS This Morning.  He has ordered twice from us, once for a lovely mahogany Neoclassical Woodbridge console table for his home in Washington DC, and most recently for an elegant Woodbridge Marseilles console table for his second home in Maryland.

See the full story and more photos in my Woodbridge Table for Knight Kiplinger blog post.

5. French Country Farmhouse Style

French Country Farmhouse style continues to be popular, and for very good reasons! The comfortable look and timeless charm of the style works in many different types of home and it is a look that is easy to live with. My two posts Farmhouse Style Furniture and Home Decor and French Country Farmhouse Style: Elegant Comfort aim to provide some inspiration! They illustrate the style and explore the key elements to achieve the look in your own home.

Happy new year to everyone! If you enjoyed this, see the rest of our picks for the year at this link for the Part 2 of our top 10 decor and antiques blog posts of 2017.

Client Spotlight: Jonathan Charles Santos Tables Klismos Chairs

I loved seeing these photos of the new Jonathan Charles Santos tables and Klismos chairs in our customers’ home. I especially love seeing the living room all beautifully decorated for Christmas! Our clients Dawson and Randy in West Granby, CT, bought the chairs and side tables in two separate purchases more than a year apart, but the pieces blend together perfectly, as does everything else in their living room. This couple has a great sense of style!

Let’s start with the chairs in the front of the photo, loyally guarded by Mr. Waggles the dog! The new Jonathan Charles Santos chairs are based on Art Deco styling from the 1920s and the Klismos chair design boasts the curved splayed legs that were a feature of the Klismos chairs first created by the ancient Greeks. Splendid satin rosewood veneer complements the black leather upholstery and ebonized arms and legs add the finishing touch to these chairs.

Jonathan Chalres Santos Ebonized Rosewood tableOn either side of the sofa you can see the new Jonathan Charles Santos Collection side tables. The curved ebonized legs and gorgeous rosewood table top make a great match for the chairs.

The overall effect of these exquisitely crafted pieces is timelessly elegant and serenely sleek.

They are ideal for Dawson and Randy’s living room, which is so nicely tailored with an emphasis on the crisp tones of black, white, and red.  The Christmas tree makes the space look very festive!

Here’s a view from another angle. Mr. Waggles hasn’t moved an inch! He looks very comfortable surrounded by this chic room design, which also offers a warm welcome thanks to the red tones and the softening effect of the blinds alongside the clean lines of the furniture.

This final view shows the marvelous height of the space. I enjoy the wall art and the panel, and the way the checkerboard tile floor that we can glimpse in the hallway adds to the classic Art Deco feel of this room. I imagine that Randy and Dawson will enjoy some very merry holiday celebrations in this space! And I also love that they included Mr. Waggles and Beanie the kitty in the photos. If you can’t see Beanie, look by the right leg of the console table in the hallway…. Beanie is black and white and well-camouflaged!

Thanks to Randy and Dawson for sharing your photos and getting us all in the holiday spirit, as well as giving us all lots of great home decor ideas with your supremely elegant home.

Mid-Century Modern: Retro Comfort and Streamlined Style

Theodore Alexander Mid-Century Modern Table TA-2751The popularity of Mid-Century Modern furniture and home decor style seems to grow every day, partly because it is so easy to live with. Younger generations of home owners have adopted the look with great enthusiasm, especially if they have watched the TV series Mad Men which promoted the sophistication and optimism of the interior design style.

Other customers who remember the look the first time around from their parents’ or grandparents’ homes find comfort in Mid-Mod as it evokes a sense of nostalgia and stability. This new Theodore Alexander Keno Bros. occasional table with gorgeous rosewood veneers is a typical example.

Mid-Century Modern design dates to exactly the period implied in the name. It draws on the era from the end of World War II in 1945 through the early 1970s with an emphasis on the 1950s. Of course, this was a period of great change socially and in design and manufacturing. The streamlined profiles of furniture in this period reflects the reaction against the old society and the exciting possibilities of the new! The excitement of the space age and airplane travel were part of the buoyant and forward-thinking mood. This new light washed oak and leather Jonathan Charles Mid-Century Modern chest looks like it is about to rocket to the moon!

Jonathan Charles Mid Century Modern Chest JC-3649Mid-Century Modern furniture and home accessories were designed with pared-down shapes and organic and ergonomic forms. The streamlined straight, angled, and gently curved shapes avoided any ornate decoration. Surface embellishments or other ornamental flourishes are not a part of this look. The design interest purely came from strong silhouettes, interesting materials and often quite bold colors.

Theodore Alexander Keno Bros Panel Screen TA-2718Geometrics were important and they gave a graphic punch whether used as a shape for furniture or as a decorative print on textiles. This stunning new Theodore Alexander Keno Bros. panel screen is a terrific example.

Theodore Alexander Keno Bros Lamp TA-2711Amidst the uncluttered look, statement lighting had a chance to shine in more ways than one! A pendant lamp with a simple organic shape is often a focal point in this kind of decor style, giving the impression that it is a space satellite or cloud floating across the room.

The wavy floating shelf on this new stainless steel and walnut veneer Mid-Century Modern style floor lamp by Theodore Alexander and the Keno Brothers shows the kind of statement we mean!

Materials combine natural woods such as teak with the new materials that the latest technology provided, such as Lucite, plastic, and molded fiberglass and plywood, Ground-breaking furniture designers in the Mid-Century Modern style include Ray and Charles Eames. George Nelson, Eero Saarinen, and Isamu Noguchi.

The new pieces in Mid-Century Modern style in our online furniture store show the finest design of this type, superbly crafted by today’s furniture makers. You might especially like to check out the full Theodore Alexander Keno Brothers collection of Mid-Century Modern styles designed in partnership with the antiques celebrities, the Keno Brothers.
