We always have beautifully carved furniture in the gallery, but this shipment of antique furniture knocked our socks off! There are some exquisite pieces and every antique is of course hand-crafted and unique.  Let’s take a look at some more of my favorites.

Antique French Gothic BuffetThis spectacular 1870 antique French Gothic buffet will be the star of the room, intricately carved in walnut with a beautiful stained glass door. Fit for a cathedral or a castle, the magnificent Gothic buffet would make a great server when you entertain. It would make an impressive home bar too, displaying your favorite wines, spirits and liqueurs!

Carved antique buffet French Renaissance

Carved dog antique french buffet

I love this 1880 antique French Hunting buffet, carved with dogs and birds. The oak buffet stands more than 9 feet tall, crowned by a curved top crest with two birds flanking a regal shield. The detail on their carved feathers is gorgeous, as is the exquisite carving on the doors of a heron with a fish in its beak and a game bird pecking at berries.

Antique French Brittany chairsantique French brittany chair carvingThis set of 6 antique French Brittany chairs is a real conversation starter! Dating to 1880, the six chestnut chairs are carved with different images of traditionally dressed French country men and woman in the seat back.

I had to lighten these images a little so you can see the detailed carving on the seat backs. For that reason they don’t look nearly as rich as the actual aged chestnut wood. You can see detailed close-ups of all the carved characters on the antique Brittany chair listing on our website. Here is one of the guys sauntering through his rustic village just to give you an idea of the quality of the carving and the charm of the chairs! The ship wheel spindles on the crest rail honor Brittany’s maritime history.

Dale Tiffany Carnation LampFinally, this Dale Tiffany lamp is NOT an antique that just arrived on our latest container of antiques from France!

It is newly hand-crafted by Dale Tiffany artisans, inspired by an original antique Tiffany design, with each piece of glass individually crafted using the same copper-foiled technique pioneered by the glass maestro Louis Comfort Tiffany!

The Dale Tiffany carnation accent lamp will put a beautiful spot of summery color into your living room or bedroom all year round.

I’m just showing it to remind you that our discount code is valid on everything on our website.

Lavishly carved in chestnut wood and with a classic oval mirror in the door, the Brittany style armoire features carvings of French country folk including a man and woman relaxing beneath a pair of trees. The matching 1930 French Brittany full-size bed is carved with more joyful scenes of country dancers and horn and bagpipe players.

This classic American treasure dates to about 1890, crafted in mahogany with elegant floral carvings and a carved crest and floral medallion on the 7-foot-high headboard. It’s a handsome focal point for your master bedroom or guest bedroom.

Antique French Hunting ChairsYour formal dining room will receive many admiring comments from guests enjoying this handsome set of 6 antique French Hunting chairs.

Sea Shell Decor and Furniture

I loved writing my recent blog posts about beach style decor. As we’re now in the last days of summer I want to finish off the beach theme with a post about shell decor. Shells in furniture and lighting are such a unique natural material and they create a distinctive look that is full of light.  I hope that all you beachcombers enjoy scouring the ideas in this blog post, even if you live many miles inland!

Shell collections always look gorgeous displayed in glass jars, as you can see in this Los Angeles beach style bedroom. Shell adds a nautical atmosphere which is a great match for a seaside condo or coastal cottage. Shell also tends to reflect light and one big shell as a centerpiece on a dining table looks pretty by candlelight.

Shell sconceAnyone can enjoy shell decor and furnishings even if you live far from the ocean. For example, this tropical shell sconce light in our online store adds a touch of color and whimsy to a living room, bedroom or hallway. The shell sconce would look pretty in a bathroom too… for all you mermaids!

Currey Shell SideboardImagine teaming a pair of orange shell sconces with this fantastic Currey & Company natural shell sideboard. The intricate detail of the shell-encrusted cabinet is amazing. It’s perfect for your Mediterranean grotto bathroom!

Oyster Shell ChandelierMoving on to the dining room, can you picture this oyster shell chandelier hanging over your dining table? The Aiden Gray chandelier featuring genuine oyster shells is crafted with rustic rope details. Whether you like eating oysters or not, you can enjoy their famous aphrodisiac benefits. The eight electric candles create a truly romantic and unusual glow in your home!

Dale Tiffany Nautilus Shell LampAlthough this exquisite Dale Tiffany lamp is not actually made of shell, I have to mention it because it is hand-made in glass and styled with the sleek lines of a nautilus shell. The new Dale Tiffany Nautilus table lamp is crafted using traditional Tiffany glass techniques and each piece of hand-rolled art glass is hand cut, pieced and soldered by a glass artist. The sleek lines and opulent color ensure that the Tiffany table lamp will be a focal point for your room.
Orange shell throw pillow

Finally, If you’re really going shell crazy, add a throw pillow! This French textile and USA finished shell throw pillow is boldly and beautifully designed with orange coral and large white shells.

The detail is lovely and at a plumply generous 19 inches wide, the square throw pillow makes a gorgeous impact as a finishing touch to your decor.

I hope that I’ve provided a little inspiration to help you come out of your shell… (Groan!) Summer doesn’t have to go away just because the nights are getting shorter. I love the cheerful look of shell decor, as well as the natural beauty. Do you collect sea shells? Tell us about it in the comments!

Home Decor Trends: Birds Take Flight

I’ve noticed that birds are popping up a lot in the home decor trends for 2015. We like the look so I’ve done some bird-spotting to share bird decor images and inspiration with you. Our six cats like the bird decor trend too but hmm… I think maybe for a different reason!

Decorilla’s reviewAntique French Armoire carved bird of best design trends at Maison & Objet’s 2015 show in Paris said: “Birds are everywhere – textile patterns, porcelain, crystal, plastic, paper…” A little bird told me that bird themes also rocked the 2015 Las Vegas Market. Of course, birds aren’t new in home decor. We often see carved birds on our antique furniture, like this detail on an 1890 antique French armoire in the Normandy style.

Vintage Bequet vaseSimilarly, this vintage Bequet vase (in our gallery now) is hand-painted with the bluebird of happiness. For thousands of years the bluebird of happiness has been a symbol of prosperity, cheerfulness, good health, and renewal of springtime.

The extravagant blue, white, and gold hand-painted vase, dating to the 1950s and signed by the famous Belgian ceramics manufacturer Bequet, reminds us that a beautiful bird will always look classic.

But everything that’s old is new again, right? Now birds are flying into home decor in every way you can imagine and in every style.Galbraith & Paul wallpaperThis Galbraith & Paul bird wallpaper shows just how enchanting the effect can be. I love this for an accent wall or perhaps in a hallway so you walk through an aviary of birds as you move through the house. The wallpaper might be a bit too busy for a large room, though.

Bird Tapestry DecorWe just started stocking new high-quality tapestries and this timeless tapestry caught my eye. The bird tapestry is designed by an English artist and the thing I like about tapestries is that they are so flexible in your decor. You can move it between rooms to give a fresh look to different spaces, and even take it with you when you move. (Tricky to do with wallpaper!)

Gray flower and bird pillowA throw pillow is another soft furnishing that just invites a bird motif if you are feeling nesty! This bird throw pillow (created with a French textile, but finished in the United States) comes in several colors and it would charm the birds out of the trees in any style of decor.

Dale Tiffany Peacock LampDesigner Rachel McCann said that while birds of all types would be important in accessories in 2015, the peacock would be one of the strongest motifs.  Peacocks are so classic and elegant, as in this sculptural peacock Dale Tiffany table lamp with a peacock cast bronze base. The hand-rolled art glass shade with a peacock feather design adds to the theme.

pheasant hunting style chandelierWe just started carrying some beautiful chandeliers and sconces based on antique Black Forest designs. I’m not surprised that I found one flaunting pheasants! Made in the USA, they are cast in resin with gorgeous details as you can see in the foliage and feathers of these handsome pheasants. The chandeliers look like carved wood and they have a nice weight to them – perfect for your Hunting Style decor!

Quail bird bookendsThe same company also casts bookends with very realistic decorative designs. This pair of quail bookends shows just one of the many types of wild animals, birds, dogs, and horses.

Bird of Paradise hand-painted VaseFinally, I just have to show you this beautiful new hand-painted Bird of Paradise vase or urn. It’s from the Chelsea House collection that we are also now stocking, which is part of Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture. The lidded porcelain vase stands 19″ high and the hand-painted birds make a stunningly colorful impact.

I’d never suggest that anyone should flock to buy bird decor just because it’s a trend. But to me it’s not a trend that will ever fly out of fashion. Bird designs are timeless, chic, and always alluring. What do you think? Does bird decor sing for you?

Client Spotlight: Art Deco Dale Tiffany Lamp

Today I’ve got a gorgeous Dale Tiffany lamp to show you in our customer Gail’s living room!

Regular readers of our blog say they enjoy our series of client spotlights featuring our customers’ homes. I love writing those posts too, and I appreciate that people send us their photos. It lets me see how our antique furniture or high-quality reproduction furniture and home accents work in people’s decor. I’ve often spent time on the phone and email helping people choose a piece. So seeing photos of their purchase in its new home is like hearing the end of the story, you know?

Art Deco Dale Tiffany LampGail L. in Madison, CT, chose this stunning Art Deco style Dale Tiffany lamp for the side table in her living room. The Dale Tiffany lamp is more than two feet high and it is typical of the sleek glamor of the Art Deco period. The shiny polished nickel base is topped with a spectacular shade crafted with long concave pieces of solid crystal. The two bulbs operate via pull chains. The lamp casts a beautiful light and it would make a terrific accent lamp in an Art Deco room or any contemporary design scheme.

Below you can see the Dale Tiffany lamp looking wonderful on the side table in Gail’s living room.

Dale Tiffany Lamp Art Deco crystal

Now I see the design of her living room, I realize that Gail was probably so drawn to the polished nickel finish of the table lamp because it matches the sideboard under the TV. I can’t see the detail perfectly, but I think it might also match the frame of the coffee table.

Dale Tiffany Crystal chandelier Dale Tiffany is famous for exquisite hand-made lighting. The designs often replicate the antique stained glass designs of Louis Comfort Tiffany lamps. (I blogged about the creative process for those unique art glass Tiffany replica lamps here.)  But the Dale Tiffany artisans also craft many lead crystal lamps, chandeliers and wall sconces too.

This dazzling polished chrome and crystal Dale Tiffany chandelier from the Massa collection is a fine example. It also replicates an original Louis Comfort Tiffany antique light design, using the same techniques of high-quality craftsmanship. Crystal always adds sparkle to your life!

Thanks to Gail for sending a photo of her Dale Tiffany lamp. It’s great to see how that classic Art Deco style is so timeless it blends beautifully into a 21st century living room!

Stained Glass in Home Decor Accents

Some of the ways you can enjoy stained glass in home decor might surprise you, especially if the words “stained glass” immediately make you think of old church windows! Stained glass brings a touch of luminous color into your home, which changes as the light in the room changes. Decorative stained glass designs also create a mood of tradition, luxury, and craftsmanship.

Renaissance or Victorian style rooms are especially suited to incorporating stained glass in home decor accents and furniture. But truth be told, the look can work brilliantly in any interior design scheme.

Stained glass in home decor window

A window is the most obvious way to enjoy stained glass in home decor. Our client George in New Jersey has an original stained glass window in the dining room of the Victorian house that he has restored. We spotted it while delivering the antique 1920 French Renaissance Henry II style oak buffet that you also see in the picture. (See more photos of George’s Victorian restoration home in our earlier post.)

Bathroom stained glass in home decorIf you don’t have an original stained glass window, you can still add one to your home. This elegant window offers a lovely contrast to the ocean-blue tile and copper bath. It creates a bathroom that blends a traditional flavor with a touch of contemporary chic.

Mechelen buffet to add stained glass in home decorArchitectural details aren’t the only way to enjoy stained glass. It’s easy to add a splash of stained glass style if you choose certain styles of antique furniture. This oak Mechelen buffet in our gallery dates to 1900 and it features original red, green and amber stained glass in a decorative floral design on the doors. It’s remarkable to think that this glass was crafted over a century ago! You will often see stained glass details in Mechelen pieces, as you can see in our post: What is Mechelen Style Antique Furniture?

Stained glass in home decor accents

Lighting offers another way to enjoy stained glass in home decor accents. This Dale Tiffany Amber Monarch wall sconce in our gallery is hand-crafted in art glass. The period-style geometric pattern in welcoming amber tones is nicely set off by a mica bronze finish. It looks like an antique stained glass wall sconce, but with a very modern benefit. You have the option of mounting the shade in two ways. Either uplit, as shown in the picture, or hanging down to shine the light below, perhaps as a reading lamp or in an entryway. The video in our post on Dale Tiffany lamps shows how the artisans craft each piece of stained glass by hand, using the same techniques as the original master glass artist: Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Shower curtain: Stained glass in home decor accentYou can even incorporate the look of stained glass in home decor accessories without using actual stained glass! This shower curtain from Café Press creates a clever illusion of colorful stained glass.

And we love these fabrics printed with stained glass designs by a company called Spoonflower in Durham, North Carolina. They work with different designers and the digital prints are available in various types of fabric from cottons to silks. Stained glass fabrics include graceful Art Nouveau designs, Frank Lloyd Wright styles, and a few that truly are based on old church windows. Some can be ordered in wallpapers, gift wrap, and decals too!

Best of August 2013: Antique Inspirations

We explored vintage and antique inspirations in our August blog posts, from groovy vintage clothing to antique spinning wheels. Every day is full of antique inspirations here at the EuroLuxAntiques.com gallery of course, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Whether I’m unpacking a new container of hand-picked treasures from Europe or chatting with clients on the phone about how a piece of antique furniture would fit in their home decor, I reckon I’ve got the best job on the planet. It’s even better when clients send us photos showing their purchases in their new homes! Let’s revisit some of our most popular August posts.

Antique inspirations in our client's French Renaissance kitchen. Chairs from EuroLuxAntiques.comBob H. sent us a bunch of photos of his amazing chateau style home in Prairie Grove, Illinois, complete with suits of armor! Bob bought a set of ten Renaissance chairs dating to 1900 from us and also a Renaissance buffet server. The chairs were upholstered in leather and carved in walnut, and Bob had a dining table custom-made to match the chairs, right down to the details on the antique chair stretchers. His medieval and Renaissance themed decor is full of antique inspirations and it’s not surprising that his beautifully designed home stars on an annual housewalk. Our Renaissance style furniture client spotlight on Bob’s home will show you why!

Antique inspirations in this reproduction Console Table from EuroLuxAntiques.com, in our client's hallwayIn my spotlight on console tables, I shared my tips on how to choose and use a console table. This was inspired by our client Elizabeth in San Francisco, CA, who was faced with a tricky choice of which console table to choose from our gallery. She has a long, narrow hallway and she couldn’t decide between three equally lovely tables. Which would look best in the space? Elizabeth finally opted for this high-quality reproduction console table in an antique French style, as you can see in the photo. The streamlined silhouette on the hand-waxed and distressed table looks perfect in Elizabeth’s hallway, in my opinion!

Sell antiques at auctionWe receive very many emails from people asking how to sell their antiques or vintage items. Often they don’t know how to start figuring out what their antique is worth and then how to go about selling it. So I wrote a post to help them! The post How to Sell Antiques and Vintage Items gives tips on various ways to find out a value for your antiques. It also describes ways you can sell your items locally or via an online site.

Antique inspirations in Dale Tiffany lamps at EuroLuxAntiques.comWe are delighted to offer Dale Tiffany lamps and light fixtures in the gallery. These gorgeous hand-made stained glass lamps are truly antique inspirations!  Many of the intricate glass mosaics on the shades exactly replicate the original designs of Louis Comfort Tiffany lamps from over a century ago. Others are inspired by antique Tiffany lamps, and they are all crafted with the glass techniques pioneered by Tiffany. I know how much artistry goes into creating each unique Dale Tiffany lamp, so I was pleased to see a new video showing how the lamps are crafted. You can watch the short video or just read a summary in my post on Dale Tiffany lamps.

What have been your antique inspirations this month? Tell us about it in the comments box below.

New Year, New Products to Love!

I hope you enjoyed (or are still enjoying!) the holiday season. I, and all of us at EuroLux, wish you a healthy and happy 2013.

I want to share some exciting news with you to kick off the new year. EuroLux will always be known for its fine French antique furniture, but we realize not everyone’s home can accommodate an 8-foot tall antique buffet. And not everyone’s budget can accommodate the antique furniture of his or her dreams.

That’s why I’m pleased to let you know we’ve expanded our product lines to offer you the very best reproduction antique furniture on the market today. High-quality reproductions serve many purposes:

  • They’re generally sized to fit the proportions of modern rooms (and by “modern,” we mean homes built within the past century).
  • They can help bridge the style gap between genuine antiques and newer home furnishings to create a seamless interior design scheme.
  • They often give you the ability to customize the finish color and level of distressing.
  • They’re budget friendly.
  • They enable you to obtain items that don’t exist as antiques (or are extremely rare), such as king-size beds, made by adapting authentic period designs.
  • They become tomorrow’s heirloom antiques. After all, even an antique Brittany armoire made in 1880 once was a new piece of furniture.

Greg and I hand-picked the reproduction product lines to carry because we wanted to make sure they truly were the highest quality available. The vast majority of our reproduction chairs, chests, beds, and other items involve a significant amount of hand work by a skilled craftsman. This ensures you receive a very high-quality product. Let me tell you more about these new additions to our inventory.

First, we’re excited to announce we now carry Dale Tiffany light fixtures. These exquisite chandeliers and lamps often replicate the original designs of Louis Comfort Tiffany and use traditional methods to create the hand-blown art glass in each shade. Dale Tiffany Studios also creates its own designs and employs the highest level manufacturing standards for each piece. From luxury replicas to budget-friendly fixtures, our Dale Tiffany line offers you the chance to incorporate historic designs or contemporary updates into your decor.

This exquisite Dale Tiffany polished chrome chandelier, for example, incorporates real crystal pendants (as opposed to less-expensive glass). And at just 18 inches tall, it’s proportioned for today’s smaller foyers and bedrooms – or a large master bath. Picture yourself soaking in the tub under this sparkling beauty!

We also now offer exceptional, hand-crafted reproduction furniture. Here’s a small sampling of the items now available in our reproduction category.

Photo of a reproduction English Tudor style bed in king size

This English Tudor style king-size bed is crafted of solid alder wood with cherry accents and features an aged, distressed umber finish so it will blend well with your existing antiques.

Reproduction French Country bar stool

This gorgeous bar stool offers you an updated French Country style to complement your decor. This barstool features a hand-shaped back and hand beading, which guarantees that no two are alike. It’s an exceptional piece of fine furniture.

After seeing these examples, I hope you’ll agree “reproduction” is not a four-letter word! I judge these items worthy to stand alongside any piece of antique French furniture in the home.

What’s your take? Do you eschew reproductions in favor of the “real thing,” or do you see reproduction furniture as an opportunity to round out your design scheme?
