November Home Decor & Antiques Roundup

Thanksgiving trayWe hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! If you were so busy shopping, cooking and decorating for Thanksgiving that you didn’t have chance to drop by and see us on the blog, here are highlights from November so you can go back and read the stories in full. (And next year, check out our post on Easy Decor Ideas for your Traditional Thanksgiving Table. It might make life a bit simpler!)

Vintage Renaissance Table in Dining RoomMy favorite posts each month are always our client spotlights when we take a little tour of a customer’s home and see how they use the piece of furniture or decor that they bought from us. Last month was no exception as we visited Crystal B.’s Georgia kitchen to deliver a large 1950s vintage French dining table. Crystal has been hunting for the perfect table for her spacious open kitchen for 4 years and we were thrilled that this chunky Renaissance style table was the solution! See the full story and more photos of the vintage Renaissance table as well as Crystal’s lovely wrought iron pot rack packed with vintage appeal.

Kathy with her collection of Thanksgiving pilgrimsTalking of vintage appeal, we got a great response on our Facebook Page and other social media to our post about Kathy’s collection of Thanksgiving pilgrims. My mother-in-law has collected pilgrims and other Thanksgiving-themed objects for more than 30 years and her collection has grown to more than 700 pieces! We display this wonderful collection in our EuroLux Gallery window on Main Street, Newberry, SC, from October through Thanksgiving every year. People love seeing the pilgrims peeking out of our window! My Collection of Thanksgiving Pilgrims post tells you how the collection started and shows more photos.

traditional-bedroom French styleVisitors often come to stay through the holiday season so I started a series of posts about how to create a gorgeous guest room. The photos are SO inspiring and I hope that the posts help you think about how to make the guest bedroom inviting, comfortable and practical for your dear family and friends.

So far I’ve written two posts on this subject. One was about the essentials needed for a Beautiful Traditional Style Guest Room. The other focused on Stylish Seating Options for a Guest Bedroom, whether you have tons of space or a more compact nest for your visitors.

I hope that you find some useful home decor ideas or inspirational images in these recent highlights from our blog. Please come back and see us next month or sign up to receive blog posts by email. Let me know if there is a subject you would like me to write about… we love all comments and questions!

Things We Love: Collection of Thanksgiving Pilgrims

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I talked with my mother-in-law Kathy about her collection of more than 700 pilgrims.

We have always been big fans of displaying personal collections in your home. Recently I blogged about decorative ways to display a collection and ways to display your ceramics collection. I think a collection adds character and personality to your home and looks so interesting creatively grouped together.

Kathy with her collection of Thanksgiving pilgrimsTo use one of my favorite Southern expressions (I occasionally try to throw them in to fit in with the locals, bless my heart) my mother-in-law, Kathy, has a pilgrim collection “what-am!” For those of you who need a translation, that is a very large and completely impressive collection of pilgrims – and other Thanksgiving-related – objects.

The first pilgrims in the collectionIt all started more than 30 years ago, circa 1982. Kathy was strolling through a Hallmark store in the mall and ran across a pair of pilgrim sculptures that she thought were cute. (The little tiny ones in the left front corner of the raised platform in this photo.)

She bought them on a whim and showed them to John when she got home. Probably because she was so delighted with them, John soon brought home another pair of pilgrims – just to make her smile. (Those were the next two to the right.)

Pilgrims collection Thanksgiving displayNot long after that, Kathy found another pair of pilgrims in a local K-Mart, and a collection was born. Friends and family gave her pilgrims around Thanksgiving every year and sometimes as holiday gifts.
The burgeoning collection grew to include Indians, pumpkins, turkeys, cornucopias and all things Thanksgiving-related. To date, Kathy estimates she has around 700 objects in her prized pilgrim collection – it is incredibly impressive when displayed together, as she does in the EuroLux Gallery window starting in October every year. Collection of pilgrimsPassersby can’t help but stop in their tracks and exclaim with wonder!

Thanksgiving pilgrims sculpturesKathy especially loves pilgrims because to her they represent courage, bravery, and fortitude.

She greatly admires their willingness to leave behind everything familiar and set out to build a new life in an unknown world, far across the ocean. The pilgrims had to make do with so little and work so hard in order to survive.

It really bothers Kathy that Thanksgiving is the holiday that doesn’t get much airtime. Halloween runs into Christmas in our retail stores, but Thanksgiving doesn’t get much attention – probably because the focus isn’t buying stuff. She thinks we should take more time to honor the bravery of the pilgrims – and to be thankful for what we have in our lives, including relationships with family and friends.

Pilgrims collection Thanksgiving displayKathy’s absolute favorite pilgrimage site (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun) was to Plymouth, Massachusetts, which she describes as “pilgrim heaven.” There were shops on every corner with an amazing selection of pilgrim-related things! Some were even life-size, but Kathy restrained due to limited space in the car during the New England adventure. She did enjoy seeing Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower.

Pilgrim figures collectionKathy’s collection contains pilgrims in all shapes and sizes – monkeys, bears, dogs, foxes, chipmunks, cats, mice, and plenty of owls dressed as pilgrims. She tries not to duplicate the ones she has, and she is always glad to serve as a pilgrim matchmaker when she finds a single pilgrim man or a pilgrim woman all by their lonesome. In fact, she found a single pilgrim woman in Waynesville, NC, who had lost her mate to breakage, and paired her up – a year and a half later – with the original matching pilgrim man, whose mate had been stolen from a shop in Columbus, OH! Reunited at last in a happy and growing pilgrim colony in South Carolina.

Kathy is a real inspiration to us, and to everyone who sees her pilgrim collection in the store window. Come and see it if you find yourself on Historic Main Street, Newberry, South Carolina. (We’re at number 1409.) We wish you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving holiday in the true spirit of the pilgrims!

Easy Decor Details for your Traditional Thanksgiving Table

Any one of these easy decor ideas will add the perfect finishing touch to your traditional Thanksgiving table. “Easy” is the key word… we’re all far too busy in the days leading up to the Thanksgiving feast to weave our own raffia cornucopia! But just the right handmade detail can create the perfect mood for the day.  Here are some easy ways to impress without stress!

An old thrift store platter becomes a charming chalkboard for your personal Thanksgiving message. Just cover a metal tray or platter with chalkboard spray paint… but don’t serve food directly on the tray!

Handmade thanksgiving table decor

There is something about handwritten decor that is just so special for a holiday gathering. It is personal and welcoming with a heart-warming nostalgia that takes us back to simpler times.

These humble brown paper and string handwritten tags created by Becky at the ThisIsHappiness blog are terrific examples. Used to tie napkins and tied to a sprig of leaves as a place card, the tags would be quick to make and you could put different words of gratitude on each napkin holder.

Pumpkin vases

Everyone will feel the harvest happiness when they see these pumpkin and squash vases. Squashes come in so many colors you can take your pick for a lively ‘traditional with a twist” display on your Thanksgiving table. Choose a hefty squash like a Hubbard to hold large stems or mini pumpkins for small posies.

To hold the flowers and some water, just carve out enough space in the squash to nestle a glass jar — or a votive holder for tiny squash. You might need to trim the bottom of the squash to make it stand upright. If so, rest the cut surface on a tray or runner so the juices don’t stain your table! Martha Stewart gives more how-to-make-it instructions if you need them – she created this lovely display.

Thanksgiving-Place-Holders-1
For a more glamorous look, gold-sprayed dried miniature Indian corn cobs make dazzling place cards, with each name written in gold pen on the husk. The easy DIY project is sure to be a talking point at your Thanksgiving table. The design is a perfect match for an opulent Rococo or Louis XIV style room, and it would also fit nicely with Hollywood Regency style.

If you make this cookie turkey as a centerpiece it is sure to charm everyone, although all bets are off as to whether anyone will want to dismantle it to eat all the cookies after dinner!  The cookie turkey should be simple enough to make just by copying the picture although you’ll need a steady hand to do the decorative glazing. No cocktails till you’ve finished!

Thanksiving harvest basket

If you’ve run out of time to do even the easy ideas above, you can never go wrong with a lovely basket filled with harvest foliage, fruits and vegetables.  (This one is arranged by Yvonne on her Stone Gable blog.)  The basket captures the spirit of the season and it looks wonderful on all traditional Thanksgiving tables. It’s the perfect match for your antique  French Country furniture or for Tuscan or Farmhouse style decor.

Happy Thanksgiving, however you decorate your table!

This month on the blog I’ve enjoyed getting my fix of French inspirations, writing about Beaujolais Nouveau Day for starters! At this time of year Greg and I are far too busy to take one of our antiques buying trips to France. We’re a regular Santa’s workshop here, packing up all the orders for holiday gifts. I’m also on the phone a lot, talking with our customers about their selections, especially with the fine antique furniture. They want to be sure they’ve found the perfect match for their home and I want the same thing.

Maybe we should wear Santa hats!  I’ll try to talk Greg into that. Meanwhile, let’s revisit some of our most popular November posts.

Château de Bagnols fireplaceChâteau de Bagnols in France was built in the 13th century, but now it’s a castle hotel where anyone can stay. After a $16 million restoration it is kitted out with stunning interiors, including tons of original antiques. The grounds are as gorgeous as the inside of the castle, with medieval towers, formal French gardens and a 100-year old lime tree terrace. See a panoramic view of the castle and more inspiring rooms in my Château de Bagnols post.

Antique chinese screen over the mantel
Our client Chris is retiring with her husband to a new house. Chris wanted a large and unique piece to decorate the mantel in the new living room. She chose a 1900 Late Qing Dynasty Chinese window screen. The folk art screen is ornately hand-carved with symbols of good fortune and prosperity. We hope those good fortune symbols are lucky charms for Chris and her husband as they enjoy their retirement! See more photos and what all the carved symbols mean in our client spotlight on the antique Chinese folk art screen.

Oysters and Bloody MaryWe can’t wait to enjoy my Uncle Dick’s Famous Bloody Mary as part of our family Thanksgiving feast! It’s usually served with our appetizer of oysters on the half shell. Next day we relish yet more oysters when my grandmother Elsie dishes up her traditional delicacy: Elsie’s Oyster Stew. If your mouth is watering as much as mine is, I shared the family’s culinary secrets in my Bloody Mary and Oyster Stew recipes post!

antique buffetThe classic style of this antique French Renaissance oak buffet or sideboard will fit beautifully into any decor. We love the playful princes or courtiers carved on the upper doors – they’ll bring a touch of regal fun to any dinner party! The impressive 1920 sideboard stands more than 8 feet tall, with ample drawer and cupboard space and a spindle rail just above the serving surface to display your blue and white Delftware plates or other collectibles.

Antique French nightstandThe gray marble top on this antique French nightstand looks so pretty against the walnut marquetry. Dating to 1900, the nightstand would be lovely at your bedside or in the guest bedroom, with a useful drawer and cupboard and a lower shelf for your bedtime reading. But it’s also a delightful accent table in a living room or hallway – even the powder room!

antique French clockFound at an antiques market in France, this antique Rococo clock was made in 1890. It’s a great pick for a wine fans as the farmer figure standing on the black marble base is admiring the fruits of his labor – clusters of juicy grapes! The heirloom-quality lamp is bound to add a touch of natural beauty to your living room or bedroom… and dare we say romance too? Know any newly-weds?

Things We Love: Elsie’s Oyster Stew Recipe & Uncle Dick’s Bloody Mary

Thanksgiving dinner with Elsie's Oyster Stew Recipe for breakfastI love spending time with family during the holidays. This Thanksgiving, Greg and I look forward to traveling to Maryland to visit my family. We’re looking forward to it so much, I want to share my grandmother’s Oyster Stew recipe with you and my uncle’s wonderful Bloody Mary!

My grandmother, Elsie, lives in Westminster and I’ve always loved going to her house. As a child, it seemed like it took forever to get to Grandma’s house on the long drive from Florida. But Grandma was always waiting for us with open arms and some home-made delicious treat. She always let me lick the beater – even if it was a cherry pie filling that got all over my white jumper.

Grandma is famous for her Oyster Stew recipeAimee and Grandma

As I child, I didn’t realize how hilarious my grandmother is. She is quite the family clown and especially loves to tell stories. Even though we’ve all heard the stories many, many times, I still love to hear them again. At 87 years young, she’ll still climb up and hang from the tree branches with her grandchildren or strike a pose with a Rasta hat. (She claims she didn’t know I put that hat on her head – not true!)

GrandmaRastaGrandma

Oysters and Bloody MaryMy Uncle Dick and Aunt Leigh host the big Thanksgiving meal and they surely know how to put on a gourmet feast for a crowd. The table is spread with all of the traditional favorites. Of course, my favorite part of the meal is when they serve the oysters! My Uncle Dick actually raises oysters in the Chesapeake Bay and lovingly tends to them all year long. We feel so blessed that he shares his bounty with us! Oysters on the half shell are served as appetizers with Uncle Dick’s Famous Bloody Mary cocktails. I am a huge Bloody Mary fan, so I will share this fantastic family recipe with you.

Uncle Dick’s Bloody Mary recipe

2 cups Clamato juice
1/2 cup vodka
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp lime juice
1/2 tsp hot sauce
1/4 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp celery salt
1/2 tsp Old Bay Seasoning

If you want a spicier drink, add more hot sauce or Old Bay Seasoning. (I do both.) Serve over ice.

Grandma after frying the oystersUncle Dick actually puts the oysters on the grill for a few minutes, which makes shucking easier. Grandma is in charge of making fried oysters – also a family tradition that I love. After the big meal, we all sit around digesting, watching football games, and catching up with the latest family news. I snapped this photo of my dad and grandma kicking back – she still has on her chef’s coat from frying the oysters!

Uncle Dick always brings enough oysters to make Elsie’s Oyster Stew recipe for breakfast the next morning. If you’ve never had it, you might think it sounds gross. (Greg won’t even try it!) But if you like oysters, it is heavenly.

Elsie’s Oyster Stew Recipe

Stick of butter
1/2 pint of shucked oysters
Milk, enough for everyone to have a bowl
Salt & pepper to taste
Old Bay Seasoning

Bring the milk, butter, and spices to just below boil. (Don’t boil it or the milk will scald.) Take it off the heat and add oysters and juice. Let the stew sit for a few minutes until the oysters curl up on the edges.

Aimee&Grandma2013I always look forward to spending time with my family, and especially my grandmother, as you can see from this photo taken this year.

Do you have fond memories of your grandparents? Tell us about them in the comments area below, or share some of your favorite family recipes!

Things We Love Right Now – December 2012

Did you have a good turkey day? We enjoyed a fun family holiday at home. Then, right after Thanksgiving, Greg and I ran away to Hot Springs, North Carolina, for a quiet weekend before the busy season. As you can see below, we had a wonderful time there!

We came back in time to enjoy our local holiday parade. Newberry, South Carolina, puts on quite a show! People enjoyed our large gallery window, “decorated” by two of our gallery cats, Lenny and Minky. Therese put up a tree in the window and decorated it with her collection of antique fans, scarves, and gloves. Even her Great Aunt’s shoes made it into the vignette!

Things We Love

With the festive season well upon us, all of us here at EuroLux are reflecting on what we love in December. Last month, we introduced you to Greg’s mom, Kathy, who repairs items that arrive damaged in the cargo containers from Europe. Here’s a photo of Kathy at work. Later this month, she’ll share some tips with you on how you can fix any of your ceramics that get broken during the holidays.

Kathy says one of her favorite things about December is decorating for the holidays. She creates an elaborate mantel display using magnolia leaves, not unlike the magnolia wreath below.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the holidays without gifts. Greg loves giving and receiving presents. This year, he’s hoping for a Fender Squier guitar to connect to our Xbox. Greg and I like to unwind by rocking out to the game Rockband. I sing, while Greg plays drums and guitar.

As for me, one thing I love about December is the flurry of holiday cards that arrive in the mailbox. I love both writing and receiving cards. It helps me re-connect with old friends I may only hear from once a year.

I love the colorful display the cards make, whether piled in a wicker basket or artfully arranged on the mantel. In keeping with this theme, I’ll be sharing some information this month about how color and antique furniture can work together to create a unique look for your home. I’ll also be writing about antique furniture as legacy — a theme that’s especially appropriate during this holiday season when we miss those family members no longer with us to celebrate. How fortunate we can fill our homes with heirlooms that remind us of these loved ones every day of the year.

Also coming up this month, I’ll be alerting you to some new decorating trends (antique furniture makes House Beautiful’s “What’s Hot in 2013″ list!), sharing some books you might find useful, and spotlighting one of our valued clients.

The main thing we love during December is YOU. We love your emails and phone calls. And we sincerely value your business.

What things do you love about December or the holiday season, in general?
