Antique French Gothic BuffetThis spectacular 1870 antique French Gothic buffet will be the star of the room, intricately carved in walnut with a beautiful stained glass door. Fit for a cathedral or a castle, the magnificent Gothic buffet would make a great server when you entertain. It would make an impressive home bar too, displaying your favorite wines, spirits and liqueurs!

Carved antique buffet French Renaissance

Carved dog antique french buffet

I love this 1880 antique French Hunting buffet, carved with dogs and birds. The oak buffet stands more than 9 feet tall, crowned by a curved top crest with two birds flanking a regal shield. The detail on their carved feathers is gorgeous, as is the exquisite carving on the doors of a heron with a fish in its beak and a game bird pecking at berries.

Antique French Brittany chairsantique French brittany chair carvingThis set of 6 antique French Brittany chairs is a real conversation starter! Dating to 1880, the six chestnut chairs are carved with different images of traditionally dressed French country men and woman in the seat back.

I had to lighten these images a little so you can see the detailed carving on the seat backs. For that reason they don’t look nearly as rich as the actual aged chestnut wood. You can see detailed close-ups of all the carved characters on the antique Brittany chair listing on our website. Here is one of the guys sauntering through his rustic village just to give you an idea of the quality of the carving and the charm of the chairs! The ship wheel spindles on the crest rail honor Brittany’s maritime history.

Dale Tiffany Carnation LampFinally, this Dale Tiffany lamp is NOT an antique that just arrived on our latest container of antiques from France!

It is newly hand-crafted by Dale Tiffany artisans, inspired by an original antique Tiffany design, with each piece of glass individually crafted using the same copper-foiled technique pioneered by the glass maestro Louis Comfort Tiffany!

The Dale Tiffany carnation accent lamp will put a beautiful spot of summery color into your living room or bedroom all year round.

I’m just showing it to remind you that our discount code is valid on everything on our website.

Antique French Furniture in Classic Newberry Mansion

Today I have some photos of antique French furniture and Mechelen buffets that are a real treat to see in our customer Tamra’s classic but eclectic home. The outside of her Greco-Roman mansion in Newberry, SC, is gorgeous too! Outside of Newberry House

You may think the dining room looks a little familiar as this home used to be owned by our good customers, Roger and Peggy. S. They recently sold their elegant 1890s home, built when Newberry was a booming textile mill town at the turn of the century, to a wonderful new caretaker – Tamra!

Antique French Table Chairs dining room

Roger and Peggy left the French Country sideboard in place in the dining room because it fit so well on that wall under the stained glass windows and they didn’t have a spot large enough for it in their new home. Tamra chose a 1930s French Country Louis XV refectory table in walnut which is super-useful as it extends to 9.5 feet long – great for a dinner party! She also bought two sets of Hunting chairs dating to the 1880s in slightly different color oak finishes in order to mix things up.

French Antique Dining Room

Tamra also had her eye on an antique Hunting Buffet for the dining room. The original glass had been damaged on this handsome oak heavily carved Hunting Buffet dating to 1880, so we had replaced it with chicken wire to give a slightly rustic feel to the piece.

It works great in Tamra’s new dining room as there is an interesting juxtaposition of formality with the classic fireplace mantel, moldings, and crystal chandelier and the touch of rustic country with the less formal French Country pieces mixed with the chicken wire in the Hunting buffet.

This close-up of the antique French Hunting buffet shows more detail of the carved oak and the heraldic crest. There’s plenty of space for Tamra to store all the dishes and stemware and silver that she’ll need to feed everyone gathered around the large table!

Tamra also fell in love with another heavily carved Hunting Buffet for the hallway at the base of her stairs. Antique French Carved Hunting Buffet

Tamra has a wonderful eclectic touch and paired antique Chinese arm chairs from her husband’s travels next to the antique French buffet. The flamboyant carvings on the oak buffet portray mythical griffins, oak leaves, fruits, and birds (right down to their feathery details!) The 1880 French buffet boasts its original wavy glass doors.

As we were delivering Tamra’s furniture, she pointed out that she was still looking for a pair of interesting pieces to go on either side of the huge front door in the front hall. I knew exactly what would fit the bill! I recommended a matched pair of narrow antique Mechelen buffets which still have their original stained glass even though they are a century old.

This shot of the stained glass shows just how intricate it is, surrounded by oak carvings. The Flemish Mechelen style was a Belgian interpretation of the French Hunting style, so I knew these pieces would work well with the other antique furniture Tamra bought from us.

Here is one buffet in place. The stained glass catches the light beautifully as it streams through the sidelights on either side of the massive front door.

Stained Glass in Home Decor Accents

Some of the ways you can enjoy stained glass in home decor might surprise you, especially if the words “stained glass” immediately make you think of old church windows! Stained glass brings a touch of luminous color into your home, which changes as the light in the room changes. Decorative stained glass designs also create a mood of tradition, luxury, and craftsmanship.

Renaissance or Victorian style rooms are especially suited to incorporating stained glass in home decor accents and furniture. But truth be told, the look can work brilliantly in any interior design scheme.

Stained glass in home decor window

A window is the most obvious way to enjoy stained glass in home decor. Our client George in New Jersey has an original stained glass window in the dining room of the Victorian house that he has restored. We spotted it while delivering the antique 1920 French Renaissance Henry II style oak buffet that you also see in the picture. (See more photos of George’s Victorian restoration home in our earlier post.)

Bathroom stained glass in home decorIf you don’t have an original stained glass window, you can still add one to your home. This elegant window offers a lovely contrast to the ocean-blue tile and copper bath. It creates a bathroom that blends a traditional flavor with a touch of contemporary chic.

Mechelen buffet to add stained glass in home decorArchitectural details aren’t the only way to enjoy stained glass. It’s easy to add a splash of stained glass style if you choose certain styles of antique furniture. This oak Mechelen buffet in our gallery dates to 1900 and it features original red, green and amber stained glass in a decorative floral design on the doors. It’s remarkable to think that this glass was crafted over a century ago! You will often see stained glass details in Mechelen pieces, as you can see in our post: What is Mechelen Style Antique Furniture?

Stained glass in home decor accents

Lighting offers another way to enjoy stained glass in home decor accents. This Dale Tiffany Amber Monarch wall sconce in our gallery is hand-crafted in art glass. The period-style geometric pattern in welcoming amber tones is nicely set off by a mica bronze finish. It looks like an antique stained glass wall sconce, but with a very modern benefit. You have the option of mounting the shade in two ways. Either uplit, as shown in the picture, or hanging down to shine the light below, perhaps as a reading lamp or in an entryway. The video in our post on Dale Tiffany lamps shows how the artisans craft each piece of stained glass by hand, using the same techniques as the original master glass artist: Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Shower curtain: Stained glass in home decor accentYou can even incorporate the look of stained glass in home decor accessories without using actual stained glass! This shower curtain from Café Press creates a clever illusion of colorful stained glass.

And we love these fabrics printed with stained glass designs by a company called Spoonflower in Durham, North Carolina. They work with different designers and the digital prints are available in various types of fabric from cottons to silks. Stained glass fabrics include graceful Art Nouveau designs, Frank Lloyd Wright styles, and a few that truly are based on old church windows. Some can be ordered in wallpapers, gift wrap, and decals too!
