Client Spotlight: Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

I’ve often admired the Ambella Home Aspen sideboard that we sell, because it’s so handsome and chunky and rugged. It’s a James Bond of a sideboard! So I was delighted when our customer Amy B. in Wichita, KS, got in touch to tell us about the Ambella Home Aspen sideboard that she bought from us earlier this year. Before I show you how amazing Amy made the sideboard look, let me tell you a bit about the sideboard itself.

This is the Ambella Home brochure photo of the sideboard, and I like it because it’s dressed with charming blue and white ceramics. (We are big fans of antique and vintage blue and white Delft ceramics in the gallery.)Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

The antique-inspired sideboard looks old but it’s newly crafted by Ambella Home artisans for the Aspen collection. When I think of the Rocky Mountain ski town of Aspen, Colorado, I also think of handsome and chunky and rugged. There’s just no getting away from it!

Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard Details

The Ambella Home Aspen sideboard is carved from solid hardwood with an oak veneer top. It has a rich mahogany finish that gives a lot of depth and visual interest and adds to the sense of substance.

You can see from this close-up that every detail is beautifully crafted. Ambella Home furniture-makers are very skilled at giving an aged finish to make the sideboard look like a genuine antique. They also fit the furniture with nice antique-look handles and hinges, and the sturdy nailheads stand out against the planked wood.

So now let’s see how the sideboard looks in Amy’s house. Amy bought the piece in January but she wanted to finish up accessorizing it and putting the final touches on her decor before she sent a photo to us. Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

Wow! What a phenomenal job! I love how Amy tied the black wrought iron candle holders above the black TV screen with the table lamps, and even the black light switch! This is such a sensuous but sophisticated arrangement. It would create a wonderful focal point in an alcove or nook. And (if you take out the TV screen and electric lamps) I defy anyone to say this tableau couldn’t have appeared in an Old World house a few hundred years ago – especially a Spanish Mission style house. It’s just so evocative.  Thanks Amy for sharing your lovely photo!

Chandelier Lighting for Every Room and Style

Chandelier lighting makes a wonderful design statement in any room. Some people think you have to have a formal dining room to show off a chandelier. (For example, see the dining rooms in our client spotlights on Gail’s French vintage Rococo chandelier or Gary’s Art Nouveau chandelier.) Others like to use chandelier lighting in an entry way or foyer. A little razzle dazzle creates a sparkling welcome!

But you can enjoy the beauty of a chandelier in any room from the bedroom to the powder room. The crystal swagged chandelier in this traditional kitchen adds a very individual touch, doesn’t it?

We stock a huge selection of chandelier lighting in our online gallery. The choices range from antique and vintage chandeliers to new chandeliers hand-crafted by artisans. Let’s have a look at some of the chandelier style options for every room and every taste.

Vintage chandelier lighting Do you prefer streamlined shapes rather than the more elaborate swoops, swags and flourishes of fancier Rococo styles? Then this 1950 vintage French chandelier shows you can have ornate style without the frou-frou details! The metal chandelier is crafted with a light golden finish. The 6 arms boast a graceful leaf motif. The body has an ornate embossed look too. It’s stately and elegant, and would look terrific in a living area or dining room, or even in a hallway. When hanging chandelier lighting in areas where people will walk beneath, be sure to leave at least 7 feet from the ground. If you have a tall visitor with a bouncy step, you don’t want them banging their head!

Vintage Capodimonte chandelier lighting

If bling is simply not your thing, a ceramic chandelier like this darling vintage Capodimonte one is a pretty choice for a Victorian home or cottage. Or even for a modern shabby romantic bedroom or dressing room! The Italian chandelier is a petite 20 inches wide and 17 inches tall so it will fit nicely into a smaller space. But even though it is petite, the yellow 1950 vintage Capodimonte chandelier is full of cheer, painted with flowery panels.

Dale Tiffany chandelier lighting Mission styleBelieve it or not, this Dale Tiffany Mission style chandelier is not actually an antique. It is crafted by Dale Tiffany artisans in hand-rolled art glass with a bronzed metal base. The size and heavy look make this light a good fit for a larger room. Think about a great room or a high-ceiling foyer where it will balance the room scale nicely.

Rustic carved chandelier lightingThis rustic hand-carved chandelier is also newly crafted. The style is so adaptable that we could see it in a Scandinavian design scheme or in the decor of someone with a taste for folk art. Picture it in a country cabin, a Farmhouse kitchen, a Boho chic boudoir… the possibilities are endless. Each of the 8 hand-carved scroll arms supports a narrow shelf with candle cups and electric candles. Charming!

If you hang this or any chandelier over a dining table, allow at least 30 to 33 inches clearance above the table top.

Upcycled vintage spoon chandelier Finally, those of you with eclectic taste (or a love for tea!) will enjoy this upcycled vintage spoon chandelier. It is hand-crafted by an artist using vintage silver plate spoons.  You can see how fabulous it looks in our customer spotlight about Barbara’s kitchen featuring a custom-made spoon chandelier.

Fun and unique, the upcycled lighting would look delightful in a breakfast nook or your cottage kitchen. I can also imagine it as an entertaining addition to a guest bedroom. It will bring a smile to any visitor’s face and make them feel quite special and welcome!

I hope this post has inspired you to think about chandelier lighting in a new light!  (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)
So here’s the Chandelier Challenge – just for fun. Describe your room or show us a picture and we’ll suggest a chandelier to suit it!

Client Spotlight: Spanish Style Madrid Dining Chairs

It’s always great to see how our customers’ homes look with the furniture they have purchased from us. Heidi’s chic dining room featuring our Madrid dining chairs is no exception!

Madrid Dining Chairs Spanish Style linen Heidi B. in North Attleboro, MA, purchased a set of ten Madrid dining chairs from us. Although the chairs are new, they are packed with Old World appeal.  The chairs are made with solid kiln-dried wood and crafted with traditional joinery and hand construction techniques. (We only work with reproduction furniture companies who meet our high standards for quality, finish, and value. Yes, we’re picky – but in the best possible way!)

As you can guess from the name, the Madrid dining chairs are influenced by traditional Spanish styling. The silhouette of the chair back and the turned spindle shaping of the front legs and stretcher help create the mood. A bold nailhead trim around the linen upholstery adds another authentic touch. The Madrid dining chairs are a perfect match for Spanish Mission style decor.

Madrid dining chair set

The Madrid dining chairs look amazing in Heidi’s home. The dining room continues that Old World Spanish feel with the big spiral candlesticks and a standing cross on the sideboard. Large glass pendant lights hung by chunky chains from the ceiling are a lovely feature too. The two lights are perfectly proportioned. They have enough heft to balance the substance of the dining table and chairs while also creating an alluringly luminous glow. The neutral linen fabric on the Madrid dining chairs pairs beautifully with the pale patterned carpet, and I think the nailhead trim on the chairs is one of those subtle details that helps pull the whole look together. Just delightful!

I bet Heidi and her husband are wonderful hosts and I can only imagine the festive dinner parties that take place in this inviting setting. I’m picturing tapas and a nice Spanish wine to continue the Old World flavor, but honestly I’d say yes to pizza and juice too! Thanks to Heidi for sharing this photo of her new Madrid dining chairs.

Celebrity Antiques Lovers at the Oscars

With the Academy Awards coming up on March 2, I was curious to see which celebrity antiques lovers would be on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars. It turns out that quite a few famous names go hunting for antiques. That includes the stars of the movie Gravity, which is up for best picture award at the 2014 Oscars, as well as other honors.

Sandra Bullock, a best actress nominee for her role in Gravity, has been spotted shopping in antiques shops in Texas and California. (We haven’t seen her in our Newberry, South Carolina store yet – check out our EuroLuxAntiques.com website, Sandra!)

Celebrity antiques: Clooney dining roomHer co-star George Clooney, mixes antique furniture in with his very tasteful decor, including vintage chairs and lighting. He seems to have a taste for Mission style chandeliers. You can see a rather fine one just over his shoulder in the dining room of his Los Angeles home, above what looks like a Renaissance style table and chairs. (Get the full house tour in the CBS News Person-to-Person with George Clooney.)  We have a very similar large Mission style vintage chandelier in the gallery.

Celebrity antiques: George Clooney antique chandelierClooney’s Baja peninsula Mexican villa also has an antique wrought iron chandelier over the otherwise modern dining room table, as featured in Architectural Digest.
Among many reasons to admire George Clooney, I like that he adopted his dog Einstein from a shelter. (A portion of all our sales benefits the PETS Inc. no-kill animal shelter, so it’s great to see a movie star helping homeless pets too.) Clooney got the cocker spaniel to love him at first sight (or first sniff) by rubbing meatballs on his shoes. Way to a dog’s heart, huh?

Ellen degeneres homeEllen DeGeneres hosts this year’s Oscars, and this celebrity antiques collector is fond of mid-20th-century antique French furniture, according to an Elle Decor article and slideshow. Her Santa Monica ranch is scattered with antiques like these 19th-century Windsor chairs. The Jonathan Charles Windsor chair that we stock in gray would also look at home in Ellen’s Country decor.

Other celebrity antiques lovers at the 2014 Oscars include Sandra Bullock’s fellow best actress nominee Meryl Streep (August: Osage County). Ms. Streep is apparently a frequent buyer of fine European antiques. She’s welcome to drop in at our gallery too, although I’d probably be speechless if she did. Only one of those ladies can win an Oscar on Sunday, or maybe one of the other actresses will scoop them both, but at least they have a passion for antiques in common!

While talking Hollywood, we are proud to count a five-time Emmy Award winner amongst our customers. You can read about him in our client spotlight on his French antique chairs.

Client Spotlight: Folsom, CA

A big thanks to Carlos and Cristina S. in Folsom, CA, for sending photos of their Italian Antique Reproduction Mantel Clock in its new home in their beautiful dining room.

One cherub points dramatically upwards, which in this photo draws your eye to the large, Spanish Mission-inspired black wrought iron chandelier that is centered above the handsome, Antique Dining Table and massive, leather-backed Antique Dining Chairs.

This Large Rococo Mantel Clock weighs 42 pounds due to the solid green marble base and measures more than 2 feet in height.  Two cherubs are in spiraling movement around the black globe in the center, which is draped in a gilded cloth, and has very pretty gilded feet and a reeded and ribboned decorative gilded band around the base.

On the wall in the back of Carlos & Cristina’s dining room, is a highly carved and stunning Antique Renaissance Buffet with ornate carvings of caryatid figures, which act as support columns.  Light from an open window to the right falls on the cherub, whose outstretched arm in this photo draws the eye to the attractively framed print of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, which was painted by the Spanish Baroque Master Painter, Bartolome Esteban Murillo, in 1678, and now hangs in the Prado Museum in Madrid.  Candlesticks with cherubs sit on either side of the image of the Madonna, surrounded by cherubs, in ascension to heaven, completing this other-wordly design motif.

Thanks, Carlos and Cristina, for sharing images of your new treasure from EuroLuxAntiques.com – we wish we could join you for dinner and linger over a bottle of wine, perhaps a good Spanish red table wine from the La Rioja region?
