Client Spotlight: Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

I’ve often admired the Ambella Home Aspen sideboard that we sell, because it’s so handsome and chunky and rugged. It’s a James Bond of a sideboard! So I was delighted when our customer Amy B. in Wichita, KS, got in touch to tell us about the Ambella Home Aspen sideboard that she bought from us earlier this year. Before I show you how amazing Amy made the sideboard look, let me tell you a bit about the sideboard itself.

This is the Ambella Home brochure photo of the sideboard, and I like it because it’s dressed with charming blue and white ceramics. (We are big fans of antique and vintage blue and white Delft ceramics in the gallery.)Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

The antique-inspired sideboard looks old but it’s newly crafted by Ambella Home artisans for the Aspen collection. When I think of the Rocky Mountain ski town of Aspen, Colorado, I also think of handsome and chunky and rugged. There’s just no getting away from it!

Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard Details

The Ambella Home Aspen sideboard is carved from solid hardwood with an oak veneer top. It has a rich mahogany finish that gives a lot of depth and visual interest and adds to the sense of substance.

You can see from this close-up that every detail is beautifully crafted. Ambella Home furniture-makers are very skilled at giving an aged finish to make the sideboard look like a genuine antique. They also fit the furniture with nice antique-look handles and hinges, and the sturdy nailheads stand out against the planked wood.

So now let’s see how the sideboard looks in Amy’s house. Amy bought the piece in January but she wanted to finish up accessorizing it and putting the final touches on her decor before she sent a photo to us. Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

Wow! What a phenomenal job! I love how Amy tied the black wrought iron candle holders above the black TV screen with the table lamps, and even the black light switch! This is such a sensuous but sophisticated arrangement. It would create a wonderful focal point in an alcove or nook. And (if you take out the TV screen and electric lamps) I defy anyone to say this tableau couldn’t have appeared in an Old World house a few hundred years ago – especially a Spanish Mission style house. It’s just so evocative.  Thanks Amy for sharing your lovely photo!

We have some exciting news to share. Greg and I are doing so much business these days with antique-inspired new furniture, we have decided to expand our collection and broaden our name to EuroLux Home.

The stunning fireplace above is one of many Ambella Home fireplaces we supply. We have many Ambella Home sink chests in our online store, including the gorgeous WInslow sink chest below, boasting a golden agate fossil stone counter and etched brass details. It looks like a real antique chest, doesn’t it? Ambella Home sink chest at EuroLux Home Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture is beautifully hand-crafted using the same techniques as original antique English and French furniture. Jonathan Charles Furniture: Hand-Crafted in Traditional Style

EuroLuxAntiques.com started selling Jonathan Charles furniture last year as the craftsmanship and traditional designs meet our high standards. Each piece is skillfully hand-crafted using the same techniques as original antique English and French furniture.  We are very impressed with the high-quality construction and beautiful finishes that make even antique dealers take a second look to see if it is new or antique.

This video shows the attention to detail and traditional craftsmanship involved. No wonder our customers love their Jonathan Charles pieces!

The video is narrated by Jonathan Sowter, founder of Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture. He explains that most of the company’s furniture designs are based on famous antiques and the furniture found in stately homes of Europe.

Sideboard by Jonathan Charles FurnitureFrom intricate carvings to hand-painted details to genuine hand-cut marquetry, Sowter says that his highly skilled craftsmen (and women!) use the same techniques that were used back in the day. “That way it’s easier to look like the original antiques,” says Sowter. “We’re lucky enough to have the skills to do that.”

You can see the result in this gorgeous Jonathan Charles sideboard from the Buckingham collection, crafted in English Regency style. The figured fine crotch mahogany veneers and crossbanding are nicely paired with the patinated brass rail

Buckingham Bed by Jonathan Charles Furniture With the amount of work involved in each piece, requiring skills that have largely died out these days, there truly is a “wow!” factor.

For example, this regal and romantic four-poster Jonathan Charles king-sized bed is based on designs by the 18th century English furniture master Thomas Chippendale. The mahogany flame veneer detail is wonderful. We would all sleep like kings and queens in that beauty!

Trying to find exactly the right authentic hardware is difficult, so Jonathan Charles Furniture has its own foundry to make every unique handle or pin.

Jonathan Charles Furniture DeskSowter describes furniture hardware as: “Jewelry, the finishing touch that just makes a great piece of furniture fantastic.” Yep, we see it in the stunning and intricate antique-inspired handles and hinges on this Jonathan Charles Furniture secretaire or secretary desk.

Behind the doors of the William and Mary style walnut cabinet you’ll find églomisé detail in the fully fitted interior. There are plenty of drawers and pigeonholes for all your treasures too!

Oh, I wanted to tell you about the fantastic Jonathan Charles tables, chairs, mirrors, and other kinds of home accents. But that will have to wait for another day. Meanwhile, you can browse all the Jonathan Charles in our inventory and see for yourself why we are proud to carry heirloom-quality Jonathan Charles furniture.

Don’t forget that because we’re on the South Carolina Antique Trail, we’re offering 10% off everything (and our always-free shipping) when you enter the coupon code at checkout: AntiqueTrail  through March 31, 2014.

The $2.2 Million Bowl…and Vintage Bowls For The Rest of Us

I was bowled over when I heard about the antique ceramic bowl that sold for more than $2.2 million in a New York auction. The sellers were regular folks who bought the simple white bowl for a few dollars in 2007, just because they liked it. They’ve displayed it in their family living room ever since. I bet it was a surprise when they learned it was 1,000-year-old antique pottery from the Northern Song dynasty in China!

That got me thinking about how antique and vintage bowls are such great accents to include in your decor. Aside from their decorative value, they are useful too. (None of these vintage bowls at EuroLuxAntiques.com cost $2.2 million!)

Vintage French crystal bowl for fruit, candy, potpourri...This vintage French leaded crystal bowl is made to hold fruit or candy, but it would also look sweet filled with potpourri or dried or silk flowers. Or how about shells, sea glass and other beachcombing finds?

Keep your favorite jewelry in a vintage Capodimonte bowl

A lidded vintage bowl like this Italian Capodimonte dish is perfect for keeping your favorite jewelry safe and easy to find. The cheerful posy of flowers on the lid makes it such a pretty decoration for any dressing table. (Hmm… Mother’s Day is coming. Maybe Mom would like this in addition to the real bouquet of flowers you’ll give her!)

Spring is in the air: vintage French pewter bowl with flowers and butterflyA shallow vintage bowl like this French pewter one is a lovely way to display items of sentimental value. Such as the matchbooks you’ve picked up on your world travels, the feather found on a mountain hike, or the champagne cork you popped when your grandchild was born. And talk about a conversation starter when guests come round!

Love the vibrant colors in this Dale Tiffany hand-blown art glass bowl Of course, some bowls are too beautiful to fill – they are statement pieces on their own. We love the Dale Tiffany line that we added to our product list this year, including these hand-blown art glass bowls. They are high-quality reproductions that Greg and I selected individually, and I wish you could see just how stunning they are in real life. A photo can’t quite do justice to their luxurious color and sheen.

Dale Tiffany hand-blown art glass bowl - what a stunner! $87 at EuroLuxAntiques.comThey add a great pop of color to any room. When you own a highly decorative bowl like these, I suggest letting it stand alone as a focal object. Display it on its own shelf or surface, as too many other pieces nearby can distract the eye.

Do you have any interesting ways you display or use your vintage and antique bowls? Tell us about it!

New Year, New Products to Love!

I hope you enjoyed (or are still enjoying!) the holiday season. I, and all of us at EuroLux, wish you a healthy and happy 2013.

I want to share some exciting news with you to kick off the new year. EuroLux will always be known for its fine French antique furniture, but we realize not everyone’s home can accommodate an 8-foot tall antique buffet. And not everyone’s budget can accommodate the antique furniture of his or her dreams.

That’s why I’m pleased to let you know we’ve expanded our product lines to offer you the very best reproduction antique furniture on the market today. High-quality reproductions serve many purposes:

  • They’re generally sized to fit the proportions of modern rooms (and by “modern,” we mean homes built within the past century).
  • They can help bridge the style gap between genuine antiques and newer home furnishings to create a seamless interior design scheme.
  • They often give you the ability to customize the finish color and level of distressing.
  • They’re budget friendly.
  • They enable you to obtain items that don’t exist as antiques (or are extremely rare), such as king-size beds, made by adapting authentic period designs.
  • They become tomorrow’s heirloom antiques. After all, even an antique Brittany armoire made in 1880 once was a new piece of furniture.

Greg and I hand-picked the reproduction product lines to carry because we wanted to make sure they truly were the highest quality available. The vast majority of our reproduction chairs, chests, beds, and other items involve a significant amount of hand work by a skilled craftsman. This ensures you receive a very high-quality product. Let me tell you more about these new additions to our inventory.

First, we’re excited to announce we now carry Dale Tiffany light fixtures. These exquisite chandeliers and lamps often replicate the original designs of Louis Comfort Tiffany and use traditional methods to create the hand-blown art glass in each shade. Dale Tiffany Studios also creates its own designs and employs the highest level manufacturing standards for each piece. From luxury replicas to budget-friendly fixtures, our Dale Tiffany line offers you the chance to incorporate historic designs or contemporary updates into your decor.

This exquisite Dale Tiffany polished chrome chandelier, for example, incorporates real crystal pendants (as opposed to less-expensive glass). And at just 18 inches tall, it’s proportioned for today’s smaller foyers and bedrooms – or a large master bath. Picture yourself soaking in the tub under this sparkling beauty!

We also now offer exceptional, hand-crafted reproduction furniture. Here’s a small sampling of the items now available in our reproduction category.

This English Tudor style king-size bed is crafted of solid alder wood with cherry accents and features an aged, distressed umber finish so it will blend well with your existing antiques.

Reproduction French Country bar stool

This gorgeous bar stool offers you an updated French Country style to complement your decor. This barstool features a hand-shaped back and hand beading, which guarantees that no two are alike. It’s an exceptional piece of fine furniture.

After seeing these examples, I hope you’ll agree “reproduction” is not a four-letter word! I judge these items worthy to stand alongside any piece of antique French furniture in the home.

What’s your take? Do you eschew reproductions in favor of the “real thing,” or do you see reproduction furniture as an opportunity to round out your design scheme?
