Monkey Rug and Monkey Decor

Gwendi contacted me about the colorful monkey rug in our store. She explained that she actually has two furry children that happen to be monkeys and they really needed this rug for their room. Of course, I agreed that the monkeys definitely needed a monkey rug for their room! This monkey rug is especially nice because it is hand-hooked in 100% pure wool. It’s 48 inches wide and the colors and details are spectacular. Judge for yourself from the photo, and then I’ll show you a photo of Gwendi and a real live monkey!

Monkey Rug Hand Hooked WoolBuddyMonkeyGwendi lives in Texas and explained that she has two monkeys, Buddy, who is a Java macaque, and Gizmo, who is a marmoset. As I’ve never met a monkey personally before, I asked Gwendi to describe their personalities.

“Buddy is my lovebug. He hugs and kisses me. He sleeps with me every night. He is a big snuggler. And of course he loves to groom me. He is the sweetest thing – he is my furry kid, no doubt!” This is Buddy, snuggling up with Gwendi in the photograph!

Scarborough House Monkey Soap DishYou don’t have to have your own monkey at home to enjoy monkey decor! So if you like the monkey rug and you are a fan of monkeys, then maybe you like these other monkey decor pieces.

This is a charming new Scarborough House monkey soap dish featuring a cheerful and very smartly dressed monkey offering soap on a banana leaf. Crafted in brass with a brown patina and a verdigris brass patina, the monkey is more than 10 inches high and he stands on a sturdy and sleek black stone base. The monkey statue would be an elegant addition to a guest bathroom especially,  as he politely offers soap to your guests.  The details on the brass monkey are superb, right down to the details in the clothing and the expression on his face.

Standing Monkey CandleholderWe also love this noble OK Casting standing monkey candleholder. The classic style will look great in a traditional living room, dining room, hallway or bedroom.

The monkey candleholder is crafted by OK Casting in cast resin, and it is hand-cast and hand-painted with stunning details.  Every piece made by OK Casting is hand-crafted to order, and the custom-made candlestick is a generous 17.5 inches high.

Holding two candles aloft, the monkey is sure to make a bold impression.

I’ve never written a blog post about interior design for a monkey room before… it’s bananas! But I hope you’ve enjoyed a little monkey business and you can check out all our monkey decor in our online store.

A Tale of Three Cats: Pumpkin grows up!

Cat that Hurricane Joachmin blew inPumpkin the cat has been with us for nearly a year now. I wrote about how she blew in after Hurricane Joachim in my post National Cat Day – Meet Pumpkin!

The little tiger cat showed up on our gallery doorstep all wet and bedraggled. When I opened the door she pranced right in as if she knew she’d found a family. Well, she was right!

People have asked how Pumpkin is doing, so here’s the update. We kept Pumpkin for a while (so named because she turned up in October) but we already had two dogs and six cats so we had our hands full.

PumpkinCatIMG_0881

Everything turned out perfectly when Greg’s parents John and Kathy fell for Pumpkin and took her home to their house to live with their cats, Corky and Harper.

Here is Pumpkin all grown up. She promptly took over John and Kathy’s house and is living high on the hog.

She is very happy and she knows how to kick back and relax in her cozy new digs.

IMG_0855Her tummy is shaved in the photo because she had just been spayed.  There’s a story to tell about her two new siblings, too.

Harper IMG_0790This is Harper, Pumpkin’s new sister. About 8 years ago, Greg and I were out for a walk on Harper Street in Newberry and we heard a pitiful wailing. Following the noise, I found the cutest little black and white kitten who had a broken toe and was in a great deal of pain.

We carried her back to our Gallery on Main Street and Kathy took her to the vet. Kathy and John had never had a cat before, and since I already had two cats and two dogs at that point (and thought I couldn’t possibly take in another one – ha!) John and Kathy took her home.

She did come to work for a while at the Gallery, so I have some sweet old photos of Ozzy and Harper together.

Ozzy___Harper

Although Harper liked to come to the gallery to hang out with Ozzy when she was a kitten, after a while, she didn’t care so much for the commute, so John and Kathy left her home by herself during the day. By the time she was three, she was quite anti-social and shy. I suggested that perhaps a friend was just what was needed to make her a bit more social.

Enter Corkie, who was adopted from the local humane society about five years ago.

BabyCorkie

Baby Corkie was very sweet, and always happy to be cuddled. Here he is with Greg.

Corkie and Greg

Corkie is very out-going and friendly and really wanted to be very best friends with Harper. However, it turned out that Harper did NOT want a very best friend. She hissed at Corkie for quite a while. Since Harper didn’t give him the warmest of welcomes, Corkie did his best to show his affection for her by sneaking up on her from behind in surprise attack or dive-bombing on top of her from a perch on the bed!

CorkieIMG_0024

Harper finally begrudgingly accepted that Corkie could live with John and Kathy. And now Pumpkin has joined them too and she has definitely become Top Cat!

Because we have so many pets that were strays and rescues we always support our local animal shelter. A portion of every sale from EuroLuxHome.com is donated to help homeless pets at Pets Inc., a no-kill animal shelter in Columbia, SC.

National Cat Day on October 29 also encourages people to help the 4 million cats who wind up in shelters each year, either by adopting a cat or making a donation to a shelter. Cat adoption is truly worth it… as you can see from our photos of our own family’s fuzzy brood!

National Cat Day – Meet Pumpkin!

October 29 is National Cat Day so it’s the perfect time to introduce you to our new cat and also share some cute and funny photos of our brood of fur babies!

helpful squiggy

National Cat Day celebrates all cats but it draws attention to the 4 million cats who wind up in shelters each year. We can all help homeless cats find the perfect lap to purr on by adopting cats rather buying them in shops. Or make a donation to a shelter for National Cat Day.

Greg and I have 9 cats and dogs now. (This is Squiggy on the left… he’s always ready for a snuggle!) Because we have so many pets that were strays and rescues we are passionate about supporting our local animal shelter. We donate a portion of every sale from EuroLuxHome.com to help homeless pets at Pets Inc., a no-kill animal shelter in Columbia, SC.

Cat that Hurricane Joachmin blew inWhich brings me to my exciting news about the latest fur baby to join the family.  Meet Pumpkin!

Pumpkin turned up after Hurricane Joachim. Greg and I were fine after surviving 18″ of rain in Newberry over one weekend, but our hearts went out to everyone displaced by the devastating floods throughout South Carolina.

In the middle of it all, here’s what Hurricane Joachim blew in! The little tiger cat showed up on our doorstep all wet and bedraggled. I opened the door and she pranced right in as if she knew this was where she belonged. I swear those hobo cats are marking the sidewalk out in front of our gallery.

Another Hobo cat

She soon fell asleep with a full belly. How could we resist?

Pumpkin cat exploring the galleryHere she is exploring the gallery and workshop. At first we thought we might call her Biscuit because she is constantly “making biscuits” and kneading with her paws. But no… Her name turned out to be Pumpkin because she showed up in October.

Pumpkin the catPumpkin is a very sweet puss and you can see how much she is filling out already from being well-fed. But she is really not very helpful with processing invoices!

Evening on the Cat PorchAs our friends on our EuroLux Facebook Page said, Pumpkin has landed in kitty heaven with all her new brothers and sisters, and also our new cat porch to explore.

We often share photos of our cats and dogs on our Facebook page (as well as posts about antiques and home decor :-) ) so if you want to keep up-to-date we’d love it if you Liked our page, or follow us on Google+. Here are some photos we posted of the furry family:

Squiggy cat

Squiggy thinks it’s time for me to stop working!

Minkey Cat Stop Working

Then Minkey our Sealpoint Siamese cat joins in. Minkey says: “Look deep into my eyes… You are feeling sleepy… Stop working… Feed me…”

Snuffalupagus

Meanwhile, Jake is busy taking care of Snuffalupagus – his newest favorite toy. He likes it so much that he has one at work and one at home.

Dachshund puppies

These dachshund puppies aren’t actually mine – my mom adopted Hansel and Gretel over the summer, so I guess these two cuties are my siblings!

Cat twinsFinally, our twin cats Lenny and Squiggy strike a pose for National Cat Day. Squiggy (eyes open) and Lenny (cool Clint Eastwood eyes closed) perch on the edge of what will eventually be the two-person shower in our master bathroom.

If you are in the Newberry, South Carolina area, drop in to see us ALL in the EuroLux Home gallery. We don’t mind if your real reason is to see Lenny, Squiggy, Ozzie, Minkey, Roxy, Fozzy, Jake, Rudy, and now Pumpkin. Greg and I are used to it!

(Update a year later: See what Pumpkin’s up to now in my update post: A Tale of Three Cats: Pumpkin Grows Up)

Happy National Cat Day – give your cat a little extra treat to celebrate!

Gifts for Pet Lovers and Pets Need Presents Too!

We are spoiling our cats with our new cat paradise front porch – it’s their gift just in time for the holidays. I have gift ideas for pet lovers too!

Hand-painted cat pillowBefore I take you on a tour of the cat porch, I have to show you these hand-painted pictures of our pride and joys.

We’re so excited to feature these gorgeous hand-made silk or linen pillows as a new EuroLuxHome.com service. The custom-made pillows are painted completely by hand from your photo of your pet. (They are not digitized or scanned!)

Here’s the pillow of our Sealpoint Siamese cat Minkey, including the photo we provided to the artist inset on the left.

Hand-painted dog pillow in silkThis is the photo we sent of Rudy and Jake, inset on the hand-painted pillow. You can see the high-quality of the artwork. The dogs look so lifelike I almost want to stroke them!

Choose the pillow size (14″ x 18″, 16″‘ x 16″, or 16″ x 20″), the fabric (silk or linen), and the trim (cord, flange, or tassels). Prices start at just $295, including free shipping!

This custom-made line is so new in our store, we don’t even have the pillows on our website yet. So email us your favorite pet photo and we’ll take care of the rest. Of course, you could always give a gift certificate to a friend or family member if you aren’t sure which photo to use!

Pets Need Presents Too

Regular readers of this blog know that Greg and I finally moved into our renovated 1920s vintage bungalow last month. On our first night in our new home our dogs Rudy and Jake (pictured above on the pillow) patrolled the house all night long. Good dogs! They were guarding to keep us safe. But they kept us awake with the clicking of their nails on the laminate floors. We had to schedule toenail clips at once!

KittyParadiseCatPorch

The cats have been making the transition to the new house in stages as it’s important that we are more settled first. But I was so excited for them to see their new cat paradise front porch. The pole on the left will be wrapped with rope so they can climb it like a tree. They have kitty doors so they can go out whenever they want.

The jumping and perching platforms haven’t been painted yet, but we’ll show the finished porch in an upcoming blog. You should have seen our handyman’s face when I described what I wanted him to build. He couldn’t stop laughing!

Dog Bed Furniture Jonathan CharlesI guess that as the cats have their special porch, we might need to treat the dogs to a holiday gift too. We stock a wonderful range of antique-inspired Jonathan Charles pet beds that make great gifts for pampered pooches. In different sizes to fit toy dogs to big boys, these pet beds are beautifully crafted. This walnut wood Jonathan Charles dog bed for larger dogs reproduces an original 1760 Irish peat bucket. The Jonathan Charles Country Farmhouse dog bed features distressed planked sides and patinated brass studded bands.

Jonathan Charles dog bed furnitureSmaller dogs will look très chic lounging in the mahogany veneered Jonathan Charles four poster dog bed from the Buckingham collection.  The fancy dog bed is easy for petite fluffy friends to hop in and out of, and it boasts fine carving to the uprights and turned finials.

You can see all our other dog themed gifts (for pets and their people) at the link.

I hope you enjoyed my pet gift post – tell us in the comments about your own pets! We can woof and meow about our fuzzy family all day.  As a portion of all our sales benefit the PETS Inc. no-kill animal shelter, we’re grateful to any customers who buy their pet-lover gifts from us so we can help more homeless pets.

Best of the Month: November 2012

As November winds down, I thought I’d round up the most popular blog posts of the month, items from our Facebook page, and stuff we loved around the web. Enjoy!

Cheap Magazines

If you love to read about decorating, you might be interested in this offer from Hearst Magazines (which we originally ran on our Facebook page). Through December 13, 2012, you can give or get a subscription to any of their 18 titles for just $5 per year! Wowser. Take your pick of popular decorating magazines like Elle Decor and Country Living, lifestyle magazines like Town & Country and Cosmopolitan, and guy titles like Car & Driver and Popular Mechanics. Note this isn’t an affiliate link. It’s just a good deal I’d thought I’d pass along!

Vintage Life: To Side or Not to Side

In the continuing adventure of our bungalow renovation, this post about our decision to re-side the house with HardiPlank generated helpful comments and advice from readers. Oh, and did we mention when we pulled the old siding down we found termites? Great.

Upcycling: Fine China as Flowerpots

I’m a fan of re-using and re-purposing old objects, including furniture, to suit modern needs. I loved this idea from Domino Magazine (shared on their Facebook page) to use china as flowerpots. Although the chinaware shown isn’t old, you certainly could use old pieces, which would add still more charm to your vintage interior. By the way, did you know we carry upcycled light fixtures? Check out these this line of chandeliers and light fixtures hand crafted by artists in Tennessee from old silver tea sets, silver spoons, vintage electrical insulators, and old key plates!

Wine Guide 2012

Readers told me they enjoyed our Thanksgiving wine guide, which of course will work for any occasion!

Customer Spotlight: Whitmire, South Carolina

Many people tell me they struggle with how to work fine antique French furniture into their decor. It can seem like a challenge, especially if you’ve inherited or purchased various styles over the years. Our clients Julie and Bruce V. of Whitmire, South Carolina, do an excellent job at combining old and new pieces into their design scheme. We featured their home recently in our customer spotlight.

Kitties!

Lastly, I leave you with this. As you wrap, pack, and ship your presents this holiday season, do you get “help” from a furry friend? This handsome fellow, shared by Cute Animals on Facebook, garnered a lot of comments from our friends and fans. Did you know a portion of all our sales goes to PETS, Inc.? We’re passionate about animal welfare, and we love supporting PETS, Inc. Pet lovers won’t find a more worthy charity to support during this holiday season.

December is fast upon us. I’ll see you next week with some Things We Love. What do you love at this time of year?
