Client Spotlight: Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed

Deliver Antique Brittany BedGreg and I just delivered a French antique Brittany buffet and Brittany bed to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL.

It was one of our slowest deliveries because we had to make a bunch of trips up and down the elevator as May lives on the 14th floor.

But what a spectacular view she has from every room in her lovely home, which is filled with European antiques!

May retired to Pensacola Beach from Connecticut, but in her corporate life, she traveled frequently to Europe.

Pensacola ViewThat is how she fell in love with European interior design, and Paris is her very favorite place to be.

May bought a couple of pieces of furniture from EuroLuxHome.com. The first was an 1880 French Brittany antique bed.

French Antique Brittany Bed

The antique Brittany bed is heavily carved in chestnut wood, with wonderful scenes in traditional Brittany style. The top of the headboard is carved with a man and women relaxing beneath a windmill. You can almost see the sails turning on the windmill because the carving is so detailed! The footboard panel depicts merry country villagers celebrating. Floral carvings and ship wheels also adorn the bed. You can see close-ups of similar carvings in the antique French Brittany furniture currently for sale on our website.

Antique French Brittany Buffet

The antique French Brittany style buffet also dates to 1880 and it is also elaborately hand-carved with scenes of rural life. Figures of a man and woman act as support columns and add a whimsical touch to this beautiful antique buffet.

French Antique Brittany Buffet

These French country folk know how to enjoy themselves! Here they gather round a wine barrel to enjoy themselves after a long day working in the fields!  May contacted me to ask if we could have the Brittany buffet altered to accommodate a TV for viewing in her bedroom.

Converted Antique Brittany Buffet

We had a local restoration company remove the central support in between the left and center upper doors, and attach it to the end of the left door. They did a wonderful job.

The Brittany buffet and bed looked fantastic in May’s bedroom and they now enjoy a fantastic view of the ocean and bay. Bo, May’s charming whippet, was very helpful during the whole delivery. I wish I had taken a photo of him! He was such a pretty dog.

Then we left to drive on to New Orleans… More about that in another blog post! For now, thanks to May for letting us share her stunning views and photos of the antique Brittany bed and buffet in her home.

The Art Deco Bedroom

Our EuroLux Home Houzz page has already been featured in many Houzz.com ideabooks and we’ve even won a Best of Houzz 2015 award for our customer service! But it’s still a thrill when I receive an email saying “Hi Aimee, Congratulations! You were hand-picked by one of our writers to be featured in an editorial ideabook on the homepage of Houzz.”

Ambella Home Art Deco Bed ManhattanThe latest piece of happy news from Houzz was to inform us that this Ambella Home bed from the Manhattan collection was featured in an ideabook on The Beguiling Art Deco Bedroom. Who could resist that title? The article talks about how Art Deco “exuded both opulence and minimalism” with glittering finishes and stark style lines.  Ambella Home Bed Headboard Manhattan

The Ambella Home Manhattan bed, which comes in both king and queen sizes, clearly reflects the Art Deco look perfectly! Glamour comes calling in the beautifully crafted white leather-like headboard upholstery, studded with a classic pattern in silver-tone nickel nailheads. The wood base makes a sleek partner to the headboard.

People say that styles come back around every 50 and 100 years, and Art Deco is definitely “hot” right now. You can see the Art Deco influence in the Hollywood Regency furniture I’ve written about recently. Our own 1920s vintage bungalow dates to the same era.

French Art Deco Buffet

We have some great Art Deco buffets and other furniture coming soon on our next container of antiques from France.

That transatlantic ship should arrive in a month or two, and we can’t wait to unwrap the pieces of antique French furniture that we bought!

This is a photo of my favorite Art Deco buffet due to arrive in that next delivery of French antiques. The beautifully carved lines make it so distinctive and you really can’t replicate the warm and mellow tones of the aged wood.

This unusual Art Deco bar cabinet will arrive in the same container of antiques. It is photographed against a strange hot pink wall, but please don’t hold that against it!
Art Deco Bar Cabinet Antique

The carvings and gleaming mirror and glass are all gorgeous. And looking at this, it’s crazy to think that the excitement of the jazz age was really a whole century ago…

I’ll write a blog post about Art Deco soon as part of my series about learning furniture history and styles. Then I can talk more about the details and feel of the Art Deco style and show you more fantastically decadent photos.

Till then, you can browse the entire Houzz ideabook on The Beguiling Art Deco Bedroom. Sweet dreams!

Traditional Christmas Decor Tour Part 2

In my last blog post, I started my tour of Traditional Christmas Decor in Every Room. We made our way from the front door through the foyer and peeked into several inspiring living rooms.  Now we’ll take the second part of our traditional Christmas decor tour.

First, let’s head into the kitchen to prepare the Christmas feast! This traditional kitchen invites everyone to gather round for egg nog while the figgy pudding is cooking. (However you are meant to cook figgy pudding…)

Nobody wants a cluttered kitchen, so the decorations here are cleverly kept to the kitchen island, with another display over the cabinet on the left. A Chef Santa, mini Christmas tree, and red candles in the center of the kitchen island still leave plenty of space for people to gather round for drinks and snacks. The mistletoe berries and silver festooned on the lamps create most of the merry mood – and those decorations don’t take up precious counter space at all.

Into the dining room we go to serve the turkey! Again the chandeliers are decorated with ribbons and bows to create a terrific focal point. The decorations feature an Old Gold color again, like the staircase in my previous holiday decor post. That shade seems to work beautifully with any room color scheme – almost like a rich neutral.

On the other hand, the gentle whites and deep evergreens at this holiday table look traditionally wintery but refreshingly serene. The slight Nordic style is enhanced by the reindeer decorations. The pretty birds on the plates also look festively chirpy! Soft white linens on the natural wood are set off by a trail of ivy down the center of the table, while white church pillar candles, surrounded by twinkling night lights in little holders, evoke the spiritual sense of Christmas.

Don’t forget the bedroom! Kids have their Christmas stockings but adults deserve some holiday spirit in the bedroom too. This bedroom has a few accessories added to bring in seasonal cheer: the two wreaths on the doors, the two bowls of white poinsettias in the en suite bathroom, and the two snowflake Christmas pillows on the bed. The symmetry of the pairs makes the environment feel pleasingly balanced and tranquil. If you are looking for pretty bedroom accessories, we have hand-woven traditional Christmas pillows and stockings in our online gallery.

Even the bathroom deserves a touch of festivity! The traditional Christmas decor in this classic bathroom includes mistletoe and greenery over the mirror. Red flowers and a red towel also add the ho-ho-holiday spirit. Decorative tricks like the fir cones tied with red ribbon from the wall sconces and a glass jar filled with red and silver Christmas ball ornaments are simple to do, but they pack a visual punch!

If you are looking for more Christmas decor ideas, check out my post on Christmas Table Decorations.

We’d love to hear your own traditional Christmas decor ideas and tips… tell us here or on our Facebook page.

Romantic Bedroom Decor

Vintage Valentine CardWith Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’m inspired to think about romantic bedroom decor.  Of course, romance is in the eye of the beholder. If you’ve just fallen in love then anywhere is romantic… The same goes if you are as happily married as Greg and I are. We celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary this year and we are just as in love as ever. I am still thinking up a romantic surprise for him for Valentine’s Day. (Shh! Don’t tell him!) However, it’s sometimes a challenge to find a quiet space to snuggle up with your sweetheart when you’ve got 8 cats and dogs eager to come snuggle up with you, like Greg and I do. And you know… I wouldn’t change a thing!

I enjoyed looking at the romantic bedroom decor in these photos, and I hope you get some ideas too.

Romantic Bedroom Decor White ROom This beautiful white bedroom is softly seductive and proves that you don’t have to paint a room pink to create a romantic atmosphere! The gauzy draped chairs and pure light set the tone, and a fabulous vintage chandelier adds a sultry and inviting touch. The feather boa in the cat basket on the floor gives me a chuckle. Our adorably mischievous cat Lenny would have a fine time playing with that!

In general, romantic bedroom decor tends to rely on pale or pastel tones – sweet lavender, delicate blue, warm peach, and yes, the very feminine pink! Layering different shades of the same color will give more depth and sophistication to the boudoir. Flowing window treatments and gently distressed furniture add to the sense of comfort.

Romantic bedroom decor with toile de jouy

By New York Interior Designers & Decorators Anthony Baratta LLC

A canopy or four-poster bed always sparks up the romance factor. (We have some gorgeous traditional beds in the gallery, including some by Ambella Home and Jonathan Charles.) Toile de Jouy is a classic choice if you want pattern in your wallpaper or bed linens but prefer to avoid florals. It immediately adds a French accent to your romantic bedroom decor. You don’t have to go as all-out toile as the photo above though.  I think it is delightful but if you prefer a lighter touch…

Romantic Bedroom Decor pink toile This French Country bedroom limits the pretty red toile fabric to the bed linens and breezy drapes, with a few matching plates as wall decorations.

Romantic bedroom decor with mural

A fairy-tale lace bed canopy and soft peachy walls provide the allure in this romantic bedroom decor. The curvy lines of the furniture add to the sensuous mood. Notice the lovely mural too. A cute white pup is optional!
Cherub light
Chalkware Guardian Angel
Cherubs and angels add a sweet note to romantic bedroom decor. The Italian cherub chandelier on the left in our gallery is made from an antique wooden cherub serenading you with a lute. The vintage gilded chalkware angel above dates to around 1950 and as it hails from France, it surely knows the language of love!
Jonathan Charles Leather ChairIf you literally want to add hearts to your bedroom, we rather like the range of new Jonathan Charles heart chairs in the gallery. Crafted in walnut and leather, the chairs add a romantic note without being too fussy. I think this green leather chair would look especially wonderful before a dressing table or vanity.

What is your idea of romantic bedroom decor? Is it about the color scheme, the fabrics, or is there some special accent that makes your heart flutter? Do you have a romantic boudoir? We’d love to see photos, or tell us about it in the comments box below.

Client Spotlight: Antique Hunting Thrones & Brittany Style Furniture

Our very first advertisement for the opening of EuroLuxAntiques.com 2004We will always have a soft spot in our hearts for Gene and Lyn, as we met Gene on the very first day that we opened our doors back in 2004. Our first advertisement that we ran in our local Lake Murray Magazine caught Gene’s attention – here it is with the tag line Your New Connection to the Olde World! When I dug this ad up from our archives, I realized that the pair of antique Hunting Thrones that Gene and Lyn later purchased were featured in that debut ad!

Since then, we’ve changed our logo, our name (from EuroLux Imports to EuroLux Antiques),and even our location (from outside Newberry to Downtown Newberry on Main Street). But we still specialize in beautiful, hand-selected European antique furniture.

Antique Hunting Thrones in the sun porchLyn was busy on our opening day, but Gene brought her back soon afterwards as he knew she would enjoy browsing in our gallery. It was filled to the brim with the spoils of our very first imported container. Those fantastic antique Hunting Thrones would soon find a new home on Gene and Lyn’s sun porch overlooking the lake, followed soon afterwards by an elegantly carved antique Brittany Bench. You can see the antique Hunting Thrones with their marvelous barley twists and carvings here on their sun porch, along with the Brittany Bench displaying that lovely vase of flowers.

Antique French Brittany Bench. EuroLuxAntiques.comHere’s a close-up of the Brittany Bench, which is very typical of our Brittany style furniture. It features ship wheel carvings to honor the maritime history of the Brittany region, and carvings of French country folk. I still remember that Gene and Lyn opened a bottle of delicious wine when we delivered the thrones, and insisted that we have a few glasses to help them celebrate their “new” acquisitions! That afternoon we discovered that we had quite a bit in common with Gene and Lyn. They had started their marriage as newlyweds in Europe, just as we had. They told us stories of Gene’s teaching stint in Scotland, and we made them laugh with stories of our adventures living in Germany. We laughed and talked for hours and it turned into the beginning of a wonderful friendship!

Antique French Hunting Buffet displaying our client's collection of antique pewter. EuroLuxAntiques.comOver the years, Gene and Lyn have continued to find “new” antique pieces at EuroLux Antiques for their handsome home, often as a way to celebrate a birthday or an anniversary. A large and heavily-carved antique Hunting Buffet holds Lyn’s collection of antique and vintage pewter in the great room. The pewter looks superb against the antique wood of the carved buffet, so beautifully mellowed with age.

Antique French Hunting Chairs in our client's great room with a Hunting Buffet. EuroLuxAntiques.comGene and Lyn’s great room is an open concept area connecting the kitchen with a dining area and living room. A set of antique French Hunting chairs was added too, as you can see in the great room around the marble table.

Antique Brittany bedroom suite in our client's home. EuroLuxAntiques.comLyn fell in love with a very high-quality antique Brittany bedroom suite, including a 3-door armoire, bed, and nightstand. I love the red floral bedspread with the dark chestnut wood – it just adds to the French provincial feel of their lovely bedroom.  If you admire this look as much as I do, we have an awesome Brittany Bed and 3-Door Armoire that just came into the gallery, and some wonderful Brittany chairs too.

Gene and Lyn are both retired and keep very busy schedules, but we’re always happy to see them when the wind blows them through our doors here in Newberry!

Vintage Life: Master Bedroom Suite

Next up on the bungalow renovation project schedule:  change the flow throughout the house.

Originally the front room did not have access to the front bedroom.  The previous owner had added a door to the left of the fireplace, but we thought traffic would flow better with the door to the right of the fireplace.  We plan to use the front room as our living room and the TV will hang above the fireplace.

The front bedroom will be our master bedroom and I requested a floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelf, which will run along the right wall as you walk through the door from the front room to the bedroom.  The space for the bookshelf was stolen from the room that used to be the only bathroom in the house.

The former bathroom and part of the former hallway will now be a master walk-in closet.  On the far side of the closet, which used to be hallway, will now be a half bathroom accessible from the front room.

You’ll walk from the front bedroom, through the master walk-in closet to the…

…new master bathroom suite, which used to be the second bedroom with green painted floors.  To the left, you see the beginning of a separate private room for the toilet.  We’ll move the firebox up two feet, which will then be eye level when you’re soaking in the vintage cast iron clawfoot tub that will be to the right of the toilet room, right in front of the fireplace.

Keep an eye on that work bench so that you stay oriented in the next photo.  This is the rest of the master bathroom suite.  Where there used to be a doorway to the left that went to the family room, there is now a linen closet.  In the right far corner will be a large walk-in shower and directly to your right will be a double sink vanity.  Straight ahead was the former second bedroom’s closet.  That area under the stairs will now be the utility room with washer and dryer, accessible from both the master bathroom and the kitchen.

I love my master bedroom suite with walk-in closet and huge bathroom with shower and bathtub!  I haven’t lived in a house with a bathtub for eight years – I am so excited to finally be able to take bubble baths again!  Calgon, take me away!

Come back for the next blog to find out how we’re changing the flow in the rest of out little 1920s bungalow!
