Beach Style Decor & Home Accessories

Following on from my last post about Beautiful Beach Style Decor, let’s take a look at the materials, textures and home decor accents that help create a happy and summery beach style in your home all year round. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who doesn’t like this look… it’s just so comfortable but crisp and clean. It’s truly an all-American design style to appeal to everyone.

In my previous blog post about beach style decor I mentioned how rattan and wicker furniture immediately conjures up a laid-back beach mood! Rope details do the same thing – I can almost smell the salt air in this entryway, can’t you? Just a simple rope bannister provides the perfect detail, contrasting with the white wainscoting, wood plank floor, and a few fishing rods thrown casually into a tall vase.

The rope step ladder on these bunk beds is sure to delight the kids when bedtime rolls around! The ship bells hung over each bed adds another lure to the youngsters… you won’t be able to keep them from rushing to brush their teeth and climb into bed. I just hope for the adults’ sake that the bells don’t have real clappers inside them. But then again, where’s the fun in that? All aboard, mateys!Rope and Iron sconce lighting

In general the rough textures of rope, wicker and rattan make a great contrast to crisp white cotton textiles and the sharp lines of navy and white striped upholstery.

You don’t have to festoon the house with rope. A small detail like this unusual Currey & Company wall sconce sets the tone. The iron and rope sconce light is understated but the simple circle of rope and the iron fixture makes us think of ships, lighthouses, and life by the sea.

Driftwood stoolA day of beachcombing is bound to turn up some driftwood,  Bleached driftwood furniture and decorative details add to the weathered look that that makes beach style so comfortable and distinctive.

For example, this driftwood stool is made from genuinely worn reclaimed old wood. The iron rings accent the beachy feel and make the stool easy to carry around for wherever you need it. At 24 inches high, the nicely shaped stool can also be used as a convenient side table for drinks when friends come to visit after a day of fun in the sun and sand.

Finally, choose some decorative finishing touches that evoke the beach and ocean life. Maybe add a jar of shells or a coconut scented candle or get creative with your old surf board.

This clever homeowner in Orlando, FL, turned a surf board into a bar for the final touch to their beach style house. Notice the driftwood toned floor and all the beautiful turquoise and white to give that lazy summer day feel.

Coral Reef Ocean Needlepoint pillowIf a surf board bar is a step too far, then some throw pillows with vistas of sea life will do the trick.

This handmade needlepoint pillow is one of a selection of ocean life pillows we stock. It’s made with pure wool with a velvet back and the color and detail of the handmade needlepoint pillow is gorgeous. The coral reef and the angel fish look lifelike enough that I feel I should be wearing a scuba mask!

Have you decorated your home with beach style? Or maybe you actually have a beach home and you’ve had fun decorating it? Tell us about it in the comments!

Our Upcycled Chandeliers on TV’s Trashformers

EuroLux Upcycled Spoondeliers on TrashformersWe were thrilled when a media company emailed us to say that our upcycled chandeliers were being featured on the Trashformers TV show on FYI Networks.

Trashformers stars four designers who are challenged to upcycle all kinds of crazy items. Our Spoondelier chandeliers were shown as an example of innovative upcycled design. Here are several spoondeliers from our selection of upcycled spoon chandeliers:

Upcycled chandelier spoondelier

The spoondeliers are custom-made to order for us by a skilled artisan using vintage silver-plated spoons. This means that each chandelier is unique and you can also tailor the details and number of tiers.

Upcycled chandelier spoondelier 4 tiers

The light through the gleaming spoons creates fantastic shadows on the wall. It’s perfect in the dining room for a romantic dinner for two or for a dramatic dinner party.

Teacup vintage spoon chandelier

You can see how the upcycled chandeliers look in our clients’ homes in these spoondelier client spotlights. Some are made only from spoons, others use vintage teacups too.

On Trashformers, four designers who are experts in upcycling had only three days to transform a school bus, airplane and ferris wheel into high end, high value products that people might buy. They were guided by host Brooks Atwood who advised on style and construction, and then judged by a panel of retail experts who estimated a value for the upcycled products. The team earning the highest sum of money wins the game!
Here is the trailer to give you a taste of the show, which was broadcast earlier this month.

The designers did a great job of turning trash into treasure, as you can see in these Trashformer video clips. (You can also get access to full episodes at the link if you enter you TV provider.)

Thought Bubble Bus

Challenges included salvaging an old school bus to create new upcycled items. The transformation of an old ferris wheel into a zen-like sculpture as a cool piece of garden art is especially impressive.

Upcycled Guitar

Another challenge involved turning the parts of a broken down plane into high-end products including bags, lamps, and even a guitar.

Some people are so creative and that’s why we love stocking the upcycled chandeliers from our artisan friends! Do you enjoy upcycled decor in your home? Tell us about it in the comments.

Client Spotlight: Tea Party Chandelier

I’ve shared photos before of upcycled vintage teacup and spoon chandeliers in our clients’ homes, but in today’s client spotlight the tea party chandelier takes a new twist!

This is the tea party chandelier tea party chandelier that we have in our gallery, custom-made by American artisans. It’s crafted from a vintage tea service including the teapot itself plus the silver plated spoons, a sugar bowl, creamer, tea tray and china teacups. The whole whimsical concoction is made to order and as the vintage tea service pieces are all unique, every single one of the brilliantly upcycled chandeliers is unique too.
Our clever customer Kelley F. in Houston, TX, made hers even more unique!

Coffee tea party chandelier

Spot the difference? Kelley added her own personal touch by changing out the vintage tea cups to large double espresso coffee cups. Kelley sent us the photo saying “I added my own cups to the light fixture…I’m in love!!!” She got the classic white Rhodes coffee cups from Pottery Barn, adding that she really wanted the ones that said ‘tea’ on them, but they would have been too big for the chandelier. In any case, she loves them now!

coffee tea party upcycled chandelier
Here’s another photo of the vintage tea service chandelier with the tea party transformed into a celebration of coffee! The chandelier is a substantial 23 inches high so it can hold its own as a focal point in a large space like Kelley’s open plan living room and breakfast nook.  You can tell that Kelley has a very artistic eye from the interesting array of decorative items on the shelves and also the gallery of framed images on the far wall.

cofffee tea cup upcycled chandelier

The view back toward the kitchen also shows Kelley’s eclectic and witty taste. I love the oversized fork and spoon on the wall. This looks like such a happy home. I’m delighted that  Kelley wrote, “I am sooooooooo happy with my new breakfast nook chandelier.  It works perfectly with my home and matches my personality to a T!!!”

Hmm, was that a deliberate pun, Kelley? That the tea party chandelier suits you to a T? Ha! Thank you for sharing your photos and we hope that you party on whether you choose tea or coffee for breakfast!

Home Decor Trends: Mixed Metals

Mixed metals are “particularly hot right now” according to an article I read in the Wall Street Journal on the Top 5 Interior Design Trends for 2015.  LA designer Jamie Bush thinks it looks  “too staged” to match every metal finish in a space. London Designer Kelly Hoppen especially likes mixing warm-toned metals with cool ones.

Vintage Copper Coal boxI agree that mixing metal tones can make a room more interesting and personal. I’ve never been a fan of matchy-matchy furniture, as I said in my blog post on Eclectic Decor. Many of our customers feel the same way – which is why they are such fun to chat with. Our vintage home accents show that people have always mixed metals happily, like this 1950 French vintage coal bucket which blends brass and copper beautifully – plus Delft ceramic handles!

This tasteful house in Boston mixes metals elegantly with various gold and silver tones. The generally neutral furniture and walls (painted with Benjamin Moore Tapestry Beige, 975) create a subtle canvas for the metal elements to shine. The old re-gilded mantel mirror is traditional for 19th century homes in the area.

Antique Renaissance Buffet Kitchen Diner

Our client Natalya S. also mixed metallic tones in her kitchen to create great visual texture. Natalya bought the carved antique buffet from us and you can read more about her kitchen furniture and decor in my Antique Renaissance Buffet in California Client Spotlight.

This Florida house built in 1926 is on the Historic Register. It was renovated, right down to the bathroom with mixed metal finishes. The gold-framed mirrors look wonderfully opulent against the chrome/silver faucets, cabinet hardware, and what looks like a silver-toned chandelier. If the entire bathroom were gold… it could be a bit over the top! Too much silver or chrome might make it too cold. The gold mirrors warm it up. These gilded mirrors were custom made but they look similar to some of our gilded antique-inspired mirrors.

The layering of different metal tones can create many different effects from a welcoming glow to sophisticated chic. Play with the cool metal tones of silver, pewter, chrome, nickel, aluminum and steel, and mix in the warmer metal tones of gold, copper, bronze and brass. Black wrought iron works neutrally to befriend any metals.  I hope you enjoy mixing your metals, whether it’s a trend or not!

Client Spotlight: Vintage Teacup Chandelier in France

Check out how great these photos are from our customer Marie-Louise in Haute-Normandie, France! Marie-Louise bought a vintage teacup and spoon chandelier from us, and now the pretty chandelier graces her kitchen far across the Atlantic ocean.

This is the Teacup vintage spoon chandelierteacup and silver spoon chandelier Marie-Louise chose from our selection of upcycled chandeliers. It’s  hand-crafted for us by an artisan using vintage silver plate spoons for each unique creation. The whimsical teacup chandelier  is literally unique as every piece is custom-made using vintage pieces, so each chandelier is slightly different.  People can customize the chandelier further if they want to. For example, by opting for just one tier rather than two.  Vintage teaspoon chandelier in kitchen

The chandelier looks fabulous hanging in Marie-Louise’s home in Haute-Normandie, France.  Her vintage kitchen is full of French character and the unusual chandelier adds another dash of personality. The pans hanging over the range look like copper – beautiful! This is such a welcoming and cozy kitchen, it makes me want to pull up a chair at the table and have a good long chat over a croissant and a steaming café au lait. :-)

The chandelier is very well traveled. Instead of shipping it directly to France as the duties are quite high, Marie-Louise opted to ship to her second home in Dubai and carry the chandelier back to France on the plane. We think it was worth the effort! The vintage floral designs on the teacups look delightful against Marie-Louise’s rose-strewn window blinds.

The teacup and spoon chandelier (or spoondelier as some people call it!) looks wonderful lit up at night. It has a sculptural effect with every cup and spoon outlined by the light.

This shows a little more of the evening sparkle as the light glints off the vintage silver plate spoons.

Exterior French House vintage kitchen I love that she included the photo of the outside looking in to the kitchen as I couldn’t help wondering how charming the outside must be with such a gorgeous vintage kitchen.  Marilou invited us to stop in on our next trip to France – we just might take her up on the gracious offer!

Marie-Louise is not the only customer who has kindly shared photos of the chandelier in her home. There is something about the teacup chandelier that makes everyone want to show it off! Here are some other client spotlights showing custom-made teacup and spoon chandeliers.

Client Spotlight: Art Deco Dale Tiffany Lamp

Today I’ve got a gorgeous Dale Tiffany lamp to show you in our customer Gail’s living room!

Regular readers of our blog say they enjoy our series of client spotlights featuring our customers’ homes. I love writing those posts too, and I appreciate that people send us their photos. It lets me see how our antique furniture or high-quality reproduction furniture and home accents work in people’s decor. I’ve often spent time on the phone and email helping people choose a piece. So seeing photos of their purchase in its new home is like hearing the end of the story, you know?

Art Deco Dale Tiffany LampGail L. in Madison, CT, chose this stunning Art Deco style Dale Tiffany lamp for the side table in her living room. The Dale Tiffany lamp is more than two feet high and it is typical of the sleek glamor of the Art Deco period. The shiny polished nickel base is topped with a spectacular shade crafted with long concave pieces of solid crystal. The two bulbs operate via pull chains. The lamp casts a beautiful light and it would make a terrific accent lamp in an Art Deco room or any contemporary design scheme.

Below you can see the Dale Tiffany lamp looking wonderful on the side table in Gail’s living room.

Dale Tiffany Lamp Art Deco crystal

Now I see the design of her living room, I realize that Gail was probably so drawn to the polished nickel finish of the table lamp because it matches the sideboard under the TV. I can’t see the detail perfectly, but I think it might also match the frame of the coffee table.

Dale Tiffany Crystal chandelier Dale Tiffany is famous for exquisite hand-made lighting. The designs often replicate the antique stained glass designs of Louis Comfort Tiffany lamps. (I blogged about the creative process for those unique art glass Tiffany replica lamps here.)  But the Dale Tiffany artisans also craft many lead crystal lamps, chandeliers and wall sconces too.

This dazzling polished chrome and crystal Dale Tiffany chandelier from the Massa collection is a fine example. It also replicates an original Louis Comfort Tiffany antique light design, using the same techniques of high-quality craftsmanship. Crystal always adds sparkle to your life!

Thanks to Gail for sending a photo of her Dale Tiffany lamp. It’s great to see how that classic Art Deco style is so timeless it blends beautifully into a 21st century living room!

Client Spotlight: Art Nouveau Chandelier

Today I want to tell you a story about a client who bought an Art Nouveau chandelier from us. I am always delighted and grateful when people send us photos for our spotlights on customers’ homes showing the furniture they have purchased from EuroLux Antiques. I don’t think we’ve had a spotlight on an Art Nouveau chandelier until Gary sent us some photos!

Gary P. lives in Cary, NC, and he is a very nice guy with wonderful taste. He is a commercial pilot and he flies all over the world. He always tries to find antique shops to visit wherever he lands. When Gary was in Rome, Italy, he found a handsome antique chandelier in a little shop, but the antique dealer wouldn’t negotiate the very expensive price.

Art Nouveau chandelier

The Art Nouveau chandelier Gary found at EuroLuxAntiques.com

Gary spent a little time researching antique chandeliers online and found our website at EuroLuxAntiques.com. As we are in South Carolina, Gary was delighted that we were within driving distance, so he decided to make a road trip with his good friend Kathryn. Gary relies upon Kathryn’s good design advice. Isn’t it great when you can trust a friend’s taste like that and know that it will match your own?

Gary was impressed with our wide selection of antique and vintage chandeliers and was also happy that our prices weren’t anywhere close to those pricey fixtures in Rome – although he insisted our quality was just as top-notch.

Art Nouveau Chandelier from EuroLuxAntiques.com Kathryn was the first to spot this outstanding Art Nouveau chandelier in alabaster. She thought it would be perfect for Gary’s dining room and he agreed. Here it is in Gary’s home. In his email, Gary said he thought the Art Nouveau chandelier looked terrific. It really does, doesn’t it? I think the dining room has a nice Italian or Mediterranean look with the elegant lemony yellow walls. The white trim around the open archway adds to the classical effect. “Thank you so much,” wrote Gary. “With Kathryn’s assistance and good decorating taste, the dining room continues to evolve.”

We’d love to see more photos of the dining room as it evolves. Meanwhile I’m sending a big “thank you” to Gary P. for sharing the photo of the Art Nouveau chandelier in its new home.

Client Spotlight: Teacup and Spoon Chandelier

Barbara E. in Cambridge, MA, sent us some wonderful photos of her kitchen with the charming teacup and spoon chandelier that she ordered from us. Barbara said: “I love the chandelier and get many, many compliments on it.” Let’s take a look and see why the custom-made spoon chandelier is so popular in Barbara’s kitchen!

Teacup and spoon chandelierThis is the silver spoon chandelier that we offer in the gallery. It is hand-crafted for us by an artisan who uses vintage silver plate spoons for his amazing creation. The spoons are bent into handles – so in fact you can hang any collectibles you want from it. Teacups look exceptionally pretty. Because each spoon chandelier is made-to-order, no two are exactly alike. And if you wish, you can also customize it, which is exactly what Barbara did!

Upcycled spoon chandelier Here is the teacup and spoon chandelier hanging in Barbara’s kitchen. Barbara ordered the chandelier to be modified so it only has one tier of spoons rather than two.The unusual design creates a nice cozy vintage mood, and I bet it’s a conversation-starter when guests visit.

Kitchen with spoon chandelier

This bigger view shows how the teacup and spoon chandelier works so beautifully in Barbara’s kitchen. Someone with a less keen eye than Barbara might worry that the old-fashioned style of the spoon chandelier would clash with the more modern light fixtures. But in fact it all lives very happily together, perhaps because the silver plate spoons blend nicely with the other silver-tone lights. Barbara is obviously one of our many design-wise customers who are confident enough to mix eclectic decor elements and create their own unique style – a smashing success in my book!

vintage spoon chandelier in the kitchen

It all looks just as gorgeous in the daytime. What an inviting space, opening out into the living area. I love the marble top counter and especially the vintage feel of the farmhouse sink and open shelves stacked with bowls. I hope that the teacup and spoon chandelier gives Barbara a smile as she works over the sink. It certainly inspires the cheerful feeling that any time is tea time!

A Spoondelier!High style upcycled chandelier crafted with 360 vintage silverplate spoons. EuroLuxAntiques.comThe custom-made chandelier is part of the whole upcycling trend where artisans take vintage objects and refashion them into something new and beautiful. We have many different upcycled light fixtures in the gallery for you to browse.  I’ve also posted before on this blog about upcycled decor – like this client spotlight on an upcycled chandelier we provided to a restaurant, created out of a whole vintage tea service.

We’re fans of upcycling because it combines craftsmanship and originality and gives new life to objects that might otherwise be discarded. It also creates a sense of authenticity in home decor. So thanks Barbara for sharing your photos of how you display your teacup and spoon chandelier in your lovely kitchen. I know we all want to come round for a cup of tea later!
