Client Spotlight: Woodbridge Corner Table

After our customer Bob sent a photo of the Woodbridge corner table he bought from us, I started looking at other creative ways to make the most of every inch of space with corner furniture.  Bob S. in Castro Valley, CA, ordered this Neo-Classic corner table: Woodbridge Neo Classic Corner TableThe new Woodbridge Furniture Company corner table is beautifully crafted with a solid wood construction and hand-distressed cherry veneers. Woodbridge Corner table The elegant design is inspired by 19th century Neo-Classic originals and it’s a neat 3 feet wide.  Bob emailed us to say “It looks great in the living room.” You can see how well it tucks into the corner!

Bob is using the table for his lovely lamp but you could also use it as an accent table in a hallway, as a TV stand for a small flat screen TV in a guest room, or even as a corner nightstand in a cozy cottage bedroom. The two drawers and lower shelf provide plenty of storage options or a place to stack your magazines, even in a compact space!

Here are some more ideas for corner furniture.

Ambella Home Agatha Corner cabinetThis new Ambella Home corner cabinet from the Agatha Contempo collection makes a very handsome statement. It is nearly 8 feet tall and shows how a corner cabinet creates extra display options in a room that perhaps doesn’t have much wall space. You could enjoy this fine piece of furniture as a china cabinet too. A corner cabinet can be used to create a focal point in a room, or perhaps to soften the angles of a very square or linear space.

Jonathan Charles Corner ChairA corner chair makes an unusual addition to a home, like this new Jonathan Charles corner chair from the Country Farmhouse collection, superbly crafted in walnut wood. It makes maximum use of any neglected corner and the rich barley twists and classic finials guarantee that the corner chair will be a great visual accent too. The rush seat suits a Country Farmhouse living room or kitchen or any traditional or rustic decor. It’s a super chair for a small entryway too, making it easy to change your boots without taking up tons of space!

Finally, this traditional kitchen in Minneapolis shows that even the kitchen sink can benefit from the corner treatment! The deep farmhouse sink allows the best views from that large corner window. Putting the sink in the corner also frees up more counter space for people to work at.

Do you enjoy using corner furniture in your home? Do you use it to make maximum use of your space or just because you love the look? We’d love to hear your comments!

Choosing Antique-Inspired Furniture

We know from our customers that buying a piece of fine antique furniture is always a special experience. But sometimes it makes more sense to buy new antique-inspired furniture for your home. Perhaps because it’s hard to find the exact antique piece to suit your space.

demilune regency sideboardHigh-quality reproduction furniture is very impressive and easy to live with and it’s a good investment too. These pieces are often hand-crafted using the same methods as original antiques.  Look at furniture by makers like Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture, Ambella Home Collection, Woodbridge Furniture Company and Currey & Co as well as lighting by Dale Tiffany, and you’ll see why they are so in demand amongst homeowners who recognize superb design and craftsmanship.

Let’s take a look at three important elements to consider when you are choosing antique-inspired furniture.

High-Quality Materials

Dale Tiffany dragonfly lampEverything starts with high-quality materials whether we’re talking about solid wood,  exquisite flame mahogany veneers, wrought iron, or superbly cast hardware. Or how about hand-rolled art glass?

The craftsmen at Dale Tiffany use the same hand-rolled glass techniques as were used to make original Louis Comfort Tiffany lamps. They also hand-cut their unique and colorful glass to replicate the famous Tiffany stained glass designs. The Dale Tiffany table lamp in the photo shows the gorgeous effect of the fine glass… you can’t fake that! (See more about the authentic Dale Tiffany creative process including a video.)

Craftsmanship in Construction

Jonathan Charles carved deskSome of the best antique-inspired furniture is crafted with the exact same techniques that the makers used for the original European antiques. From hand-cut marquetry to intricate carved details, these reproductions are works of art in their own right. This amazing Jonathan Charles desk in the Queen Anne style shows just what we are talking about. The craftsmen and women certainly need to be as good as the craftsmen in days of yore. The only difference is that today’s furniture experts get to produce their work under decent lighting – they don’t have to work on fiddly inlays by candlelight!  (See more about traditional Jonathan Charles hand-craftsmanship including a short video.)

High-Quality and Antiqued Finishes

Ambella Home Sink Chest Hand-rubbed and carefully crafted antiqued finishes add the finishing touch to the best antique-inspired furniture. Perhaps you’ll love an ebonized finish or the welcoming allure of an aged brass or oiled bronze finish. The gleam of hand-waxed wood, antiqued mirrors, crackle glazes, distressed painted wood, polished marble… there are so many choices.

This Ambella Home sink chest shows how refined and authentic the best finishes can be, imbuing your home with a sense of substance and tradition.

Family Games for the Holidays

Jonathan Charles Games TableA couple of weeks ago I got an email from Houzz.com saying “Hi Aimee, Congratulations! You were hand-picked by one of our writers to be featured in an editorial ideabook on the homepage of Houzz.”  That was a great way to start the day! The article is called Games People Play and it featured this Jonathan Charles games table that we stock. We sell the games table on our website, as well as from our EuroLux Houzz.com page. The square games table on a nicely carved barley twist column is crafted in walnut wood with oyster veneer. An inlaid top forms the chess board.

Inspired by that mention on Houzz, I thought it would be fun to write a post on family games for the holidays.  I also want to show you some of the superb games furniture we have in stock. Greg and I love to play trivia at a local sports bar in Columbia, SC. Therese, Greg’s aunt that used to work with us, and her boyfriend, Bill, join us every Tuesday evening. Our team is called The Info Junkies and if I can brag a bit – we win quite frequently!

French vintage Games tableNo, we do NOT play trivia night at this fabulous vintage games table, but I wish we did! The table just arrived from France, and the mahogany and green leather set of Regency style table and four chairs dates to 1960. I can picture the Rat Pack seated around it playing poker. I doubt the Rat Pack was any more competitive than we are on trivia nights though!

Chess set Game GlobeBoth Greg and Bill are fonts of useless knowledge and usually amaze us with the randomness of what they know. Therese and I help out too, but we definitely don’t have the stockpile of trivia that Greg and Bill do. Greg has a particularly deep knowledge of music from the 1970s to 1990s and we can both recite the names of the English Monarchy – in order!

For people who prefer to play a civilized game of chess rather than try to remember the name of every member of The Partridge Family,  this new chess set globe is a winner! It is printed with an antique nautical world map and replica frescoes. The chess board is removable so you can play it outside the globe for an out-of-this-world game! (Groan.)  Ambella Home Shuffleboard

Shuffleboard is such a great holiday game for all the family, and this new Ambella Home shuffleboard table is sure to evoke nostalgia. The Elegant Scroll shuffleboard table is finely crafted with handsome decorative details, so it will fit right in to your traditional decor.

Ambella Home foosball table

The matching new Ambella Home foosball table is bound to be fun too in your games room. The old-fashioned and ornate design is crafted with a fine patina and it looks like a games table out of an old pub.

We love the traditional family games, but we also love the newer games and puzzles too. John is a whiz at Sudoku and crossword puzzles and both Kathy and Greg love to play Bejeweled Blitz on their iPads.

Do you love darts, cards, pool, or charades? Tell us the about family games you enjoy for the holidays!

EuroLux Antiques Announces EuroLux Home

We have some exciting news to share. Greg and I are doing so much business these days with antique-inspired new furniture, we have decided to expand our collection and broaden our name to EuroLux Home.

Ambella Home furniture at EuroLux HomeThe new name reflects the fact that we offer much more than just antiques now. We do of course still have our personally selected antique furniture that we bring from Europe. But now, in addition to EuroLux Antiques at our website, you’ll find an even greater range of EuroLux Home finely crafted high-quality new furniture and home décor accents. We have heirloom-quality furniture for every room in the house!

We are just as choosy about the antique-inspired new furniture as we are about our century-old French furniture. We only stock creations by the finest furniture craftspeople. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular items that our customers love from our collections at EuroLuxHome.com.

The stunning fireplace above is one of many Ambella Home fireplaces we supply. Intricately carved detail on the cast stone Ambella Home Brookstone fireplace is accented by a luscious black fossil stone top. Many people know Ambella Home as the company that made sink chests popular. We have many Ambella Home sink chests in our online store, including the gorgeous WInslow sink chest below, boasting a golden agate fossil stone counter and etched brass details. It looks like a real antique chest, doesn’t it? Ambella Home sink chest at EuroLux Home Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture is beautifully hand-crafted using the same techniques as original antique English and French furniture. I blogged about Jonathan Charles furniture a while ago, including a video showing how these pieces are painstakingly crafted.
Jonathan Charles chairs at EuroLux HomeThese ladderback Jonathan Charles dining chairs in traditional Country Farmhouse style have wowed our customers this summer. They are crafted in walnut and the nice details and rich finish make it easy to see why they are such a hit!

Mahogany Partners Desk at EuroLux HomeFinally, this amazing new partners desk is a superb example of the new antique-inspired furniture designed with Old World flair. The oval desk is crafted in rich flame mahogany and it features a decorative banded inlay and three hand-tooled leather panels on the desk surface. Packed with classic elegance to blend with your traditional decor, the new partners desk in our online gallery impresses everyone who sees it. The reasonable price impresses them too!

Armchair Explorer Decor

Whether you are traveling or not this summer, armchair explorer decor can take you on a romantic journey every day! This look is also known as travel-inspired decor, but the idea of being an explorer adds a bit more of an adventurous touch, doesn’t it?

Pic: San Francisco Interior Designers & Decorators Adeeni Design Group

This living room is a cozy example of decor with an armchair explorer vibe. The vintage map above the sofa, the globe-like piece on the zebra ottaman, and exotic touches like the antique carved corbels flanking the map look like mementos from someone’s world travels.

Armchair Explorer decor

Room by Ankeny Interior Designers & Decorators R. Cartwright Design

Although this room is completely different in tone – it’s much more streamlined with cooler colors – it is also a nice package of armchair explorer decor.  Framed maps, an antique globe, suitcases as design accents and a trunk for a coffee table all create a well-traveled mood. See how the round wrought-iron light fixture nicely echoes the shape of the globe.

Travel posters, especially ones with a vintage flavor, are an easy way to create an armchair traveler mood. Mix up the textiles too, like the various patterns on these throw pillows. Indian styles, paisleys, or other ethnic designs quickly evoke the atmosphere of foreign lands. You’ll notice that the rugs in each of these rooms all add an exotic splash, drawing on Indian and Moorish designs.

Globe mini-barIf you want to create the look in your home, this handsome new globe mini-bar from our collection of globe furniture could be a good place to start your journey. The nautical map makes the wooden globe look like an antique used by 18th century explorers, but it actually opens to reveal a hidden drinks cabinet. Aubusson Zebra Throw Pillow

A zebra or other wild animal throw pillow or rug conjures up far-flung adventures. Rest assured, no zebras have been harmed in the making of this fine new Aubusson Zebra throw pillow. It is handwoven in 100% wool!

Armchair explorer decorFrom our selection of new and antique travel trunk furniture, I love this new Jonathan Charles Voyager chest of drawers. The leather and oak chest looks like an antique travel trunk, fully fitted with a removable top tray to store all your small keepsakes. Even the two small drawers and one large lower drawer are lined with vintage style maps. We also sell the matching coffee table, which is just as finely detailed.

Do you like the armchair explorer decor style? Do you have it in your home? Send us a postcard via the comments box below!

Jonathan Charles Furniture: Hand-Crafted in Traditional Style

EuroLuxAntiques.com started selling Jonathan Charles furniture last year as the craftsmanship and traditional designs meet our high standards. Each piece is skillfully hand-crafted using the same techniques as original antique English and French furniture.  We are very impressed with the high-quality construction and beautiful finishes that make even antique dealers take a second look to see if it is new or antique.

This video shows the attention to detail and traditional craftsmanship involved. No wonder our customers love their Jonathan Charles pieces!

The video is narrated by Jonathan Sowter, founder of Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture. He explains that most of the company’s furniture designs are based on famous antiques and the furniture found in stately homes of Europe.

Sideboard by Jonathan Charles FurnitureFrom intricate carvings to hand-painted details to genuine hand-cut marquetry, Sowter says that his highly skilled craftsmen (and women!) use the same techniques that were used back in the day. “That way it’s easier to look like the original antiques,” says Sowter. “We’re lucky enough to have the skills to do that.”

You can see the result in this gorgeous Jonathan Charles sideboard from the Buckingham collection, crafted in English Regency style. The figured fine crotch mahogany veneers and crossbanding are nicely paired with the patinated brass rail

Buckingham Bed by Jonathan Charles Furniture With the amount of work involved in each piece, requiring skills that have largely died out these days, there truly is a “wow!” factor.

For example, this regal and romantic four-poster Jonathan Charles king-sized bed is based on designs by the 18th century English furniture master Thomas Chippendale. The mahogany flame veneer detail is wonderful. We would all sleep like kings and queens in that beauty!

Trying to find exactly the right authentic hardware is difficult, so Jonathan Charles Furniture has its own foundry to make every unique handle or pin.

Jonathan Charles Furniture DeskSowter describes furniture hardware as: “Jewelry, the finishing touch that just makes a great piece of furniture fantastic.” Yep, we see it in the stunning and intricate antique-inspired handles and hinges on this Jonathan Charles Furniture secretaire or secretary desk.

Behind the doors of the William and Mary style walnut cabinet you’ll find églomisé detail in the fully fitted interior. There are plenty of drawers and pigeonholes for all your treasures too!

Oh, I wanted to tell you about the fantastic Jonathan Charles tables, chairs, mirrors, and other kinds of home accents. But that will have to wait for another day. Meanwhile, you can browse all the Jonathan Charles in our inventory and see for yourself why we are proud to carry heirloom-quality Jonathan Charles furniture.

How to Create Farmhouse Style

Although few of us actually live in a farmhouse, the Farmhouse style of decor continues to appeal to urbanites and suburbanites alike. It carries a sense of nostalgia for an old-fashioned, simpler way of life before the hustle and bustle of today’s modern world. I enjoyed this Houzz.com article on 9 Ways to Create Comforting Farmhouse Style Anywhere.
You don’t want everything to match too perfectly for a traditional Farmhouse style! It’s a decor that looks lived in, with one-off pieces that appear aged and loved.

Blue and white ceramics in this simple white decor... fresh!Often it takes just a few simple details to evoke Farmhouse style. A pair of rockers on the porch, a white claw-foot tub in the bathroom, an antique buffet server or hutch displaying heirloom china or pretty antique plates or vintage transferware plates. A crisp display of blue and white ceramics in a breezy white setting immediately creates a fresh and easy country look. Our vintage blue Delft ginger jars and plates fit the mood perfectly!

Our customer Anuradha V. created a very moody vignette with a 1920s green enamel pitcher from EuroLuxAntiques.comCountry Farmhouse style evokes pastoral living and traditional values, and home decor materials reflect those strong and earthy values, such as wood, stone, and iron. Textiles and surfaces are generally natural and matte in texture, and finishes often distressed. This photo from our client Anuradha V. shows a green vintage enamel pitcher that she bought from EuroLuxAntiques.com, set on a rustic table against a simple white plastered wall. The symmetry is so pleasing in this space, and the green pitcher provides a pop of natural color.

Antique Farmhouse Style Table, 1880, BrittanyA sturdy kitchen or dining room table is at the heart of the Farmhouse style. You need a place for the family to gather after the day’s work is done, to celebrate with a healthy feast! A wood table is key to this look, and a deep apron offers the subtle design detail that makes it look authentic. This handsome antique French dining table dates to 1880 and has just the right rugged appeal. It’s carved in the Brittany style, with figurines on the legs of French country men and women to add an extra dash of Farmhouse flair!

Jonathan Charles Country Farmhouse Style LoveseatWe have just added some wonderful Jonathan Charles furniture to our gallery. Greg and I selected our favorite pieces including several from the Jonathan Charles Country Farmhouse collection. To give you a sneak peek, this gorgeous Jonathan Charles loveseat is crafted from walnut wood, with rattan detailing and a creamy white seat cushion. Based on a 1900 design, this high-quality reproduction loveseat is a great example of Farmhouse style. It combines substance with simplicity – a combination that never goes out of fashion! I can picture this loveseat in a living room, as occasional seating in a bedroom, or even in a covered conservatory surrounded by leafy plants and pretty flowers.
