Ask About Our Antique Furniture With Chat!

Aimee Antiques Store ownerIf you’ve visited our antiques and home accessories online store recently, you know that EuroLuxHome.com now has a snazzy new Chat function! This means you can send a quick text message through Chat to ask a question about any of the products for sale on our site, or ask if we are going to have a specific type of item in stock soon.

We frequently ship new containers of antiques from France and other parts of Europe, so if you get in touch and we have something suitable on its way, we might be able to give you the first scoop!

When you phone, email or use the Chat function to have a conversation with us, the person at the other end is usually me, Aimee. (Sometimes our many dogs and cats like to lend a helping paw too, but their typing isn’t quite fast enough for Chat yet!)

Greg often joins in on Chat too – he is the technical wizard in our family business, so if you send a Chat message, it’s just as likely to be him replying as me because he loves using Chat! Either way, we will do our best to help you, whether you are asking about one of our new pieces of hand-crafted, antique-inspired furniture or a century-old piece that Greg and I found in an antiques market in Paris and shipped back to the USA.

Aimee and Greg Antiques Store OwnersWe pride ourselves on our high level of customer service. We get 100% positive feedback and very high positive marks on all the major sites where we sell, such as eBay and Chairish. We also have the Best of Houzz awards for customer satisfaction and service for several years.

Our goal is to keep to that high standard and improve our customer service even more, making life easier for customers to find the perfect antique furniture for their home, the ideal vintage home accessory or the newly crafted piece of furniture of their dreams, something that will maybe  become a family heirloom.  So now our website offers Chat!

Customers who have used it tell us that they love the Chat function! Everybody is multi-tasking these days so they can have a conversation with us about a piece while also doing other things. And if we need to leave the phone for a minute to research an answer for them or measure some specific dimension of a piece, they can carry on doing something else with their time till we return to Chat.

The only thing we can’t really do is give appraisals. If you have a piece that you want to sell, then read my blog post How to Sell Antiques and Vintage Items. We usually direct people to Worthpoint.com to find out the value of a piece.

So, whether you phone us on our toll free number: 866-602-9394 or email us or or hop over to the website at EuroLuxHome.com to use the Chat box to ask your question…  give in to temptation and get in touch! We’d love to help!

Houzz Home Decor Honors for EuroLux Home

Houzz Award badgeWe only started selling on Houzz.com last summer but already we’ve been blown away by the great interior design community there and the great home decor advice. We were especially pleased to receive a congratulations email from Houzz saying that EuroLux Home had been awarded more honors!

Houzz Recommended BadgeIn January I posted that EuroLux Home won a Best of Houzz 2015 award for our customer satisfaction and service. That was terrific, but now we’ve got more good news to celebrate as we’ve received two new badges. We received the Recommended badge which is given to the top-rated pros on Houzz.

Houzz Influencer Badge We also received The Influencer badge, given to pros on Houzz whose “advice and knowledgeable posts are most appreciated by the Houzz community.” I love that title… “The Influencer.” It sounds like a movie starring Clint Eastwood!Clint Eastwood

I don’t know if  Clint is very big on home decor, but I’m sure that Greg will be happy to stand in for him as The Influencer. He’ll be thrilled to play THAT role!

Joking aside, we are very grateful that the Houzz community enjoys what we do. Our new and antique furniture and home decor accents have also been featured in many Houzz editorials.

Just out of interest, I checked on our last few sales in our EuroLux Home Houzz shop. Our Houzz customers are a very diverse group of people with a wide range of tastes.

Bench by EuroLuxHome
Recent customers have bought sets of antique dining chairs, a beautiful cast resin pointer dog sculpture, some exquisite hand-crafted Aubusson throw pillows, and this handsome new French Country style bench boasting a hand-woven rattan seat.

Our lighting collections are also very popular with Houzz style-seekers including lighting by Jonathan Charles, Dale Tiffany, and Currey and Company.

We hope that you’ll come and follow EuroLux Home on Houzz if you have an account. (It’s free, of course.) Check out our customer projects too.

Meanwhile, we’ll carry on chatting with our home decor friends on Houzz and we’ll enjoy our new role as The Influencer!

EuroLux Home Wins Best of Houzz 2015 Award

Houzz Award badgeGreg and I were thrilled to hear that EuroLux Home is a winner in the Best of Houzz 2015 awards. We even get a special button to put on our website. How fancy is that? EuroLux Home was awarded “Best Of Houzz” for Customer Satisfaction. We pride ourselves on our customer service so that makes us very happy, especially as we were only invited to join the Houzz.com marketplace last summer – this is our EuroLuxHome page on Houzz

We received a press release from Houzz to distribute. I won’t take up my whole blog post by copying it all here, but this is the part about us.

“Houzz provides homeowners with a 360 degree view of home building, remodeling and design industry professionals, empowering them to engage the right people and products for their project,” said Liza Hausman, vice president of industry marketing for Houzz. “We’re delighted to recognize EuroLux Home among our “Best Of” professionals as judged by our community of homeowners and design enthusiasts who are actively remodeling and decorating their homes.”

Best seller Glass Cocktail TableOut of curiosity, I looked at our recent best-selling furniture and home accents on Houzz. This gorgeous new Woodbridge cocktail or coffee table has been especially popular, both in this gold leaf finish and the alternative silver tone finish. The square beveled glass cocktail table is crafted with a sturdy forged steel frame and a stunning antiqued gold leaf finish. Our previous client spotlight shows how chic the Woodbridge table looks in our customer Mary G’s Californian living room.

We’ve also featured in several editorials on Houzz recently. I already mentioned the Games People Play article about family games.

Coral pink painted cabinet

The other ones include the Houzz piece on Decorating Your Home With Coral Reef, the 2015 Sherman-Williams paint Color of the Year. Houzz mentioned this handsome new cottage style hardwood coral pink painted cabinet that we sell. Funnily enough, I also wrote a blog post last week about the various 2015 Paint Colors of the Year and I suggested in that another coral pink painted wall cabinet by the same furniture maker. It would make a nice partner to this one!

The Houzz ideabook on Sofas for Every Style also included a couple of sofas from EuroLux Home. They have excellent taste, the Houzz writers, don’t they? :-)
They featured this French Country settee, newly crafted with Old World appeal.
French Country SetteeThey also selected our luxurious new top grain leather sofa, hand-crafted in the USA with a solid wood frame.

Thanks to all the Houzz editorial writers and the Houzz users and customers who have supported us with great reviews!

If you haven’t joined Houzz yet, then of course you can still browse our full inventory at our own online site: EuroLuxHome.com.

Things We Love: EuroLux in the News & Talking Business

EuroLux Antiques Newberry South CarolinaWe were delighted when The State newspaper in Columbia said we are one of the reasons to visit Newberry! The article Five reasons to spend a summer Friday evening in Newberry suggested trolling for antiques in the number one spot. The journalist said: “Head to EuroLux for fine European and Asian furnishings.” Yay! Of course, if you can’t come and see us in person, you can still visit our EuroLuxAntiques.com online gallery.

Greg and I have also been doing the speaking circuit. We were recently invited to speak at the South Carolina Municipal Association Annual Meeting of all of the mayors in South Carolina. Our session was called Clicks Supporting Bricks. It was about how even small family-run stores and mom-and-pop merchants like us can harness the power of the Internet to run their businesses.

EuroLux Antiques online sales

Greg and Aimee (front left and center) talk about Clicks Supporting Bricks

You can read some of what we said in this article about Clicks Supporting Bricks. We talked about how EuroLux Antiques switched to e-commerce soon after opening our bricks and mortar store 10 years ago, even though fine antiques are one of the hardest things to sell online. As the article says about us: “At one point, they had 2,000 items for sale, and one piece might have 70 accompanying photos to highlight its details and intricate handiwork.”

Now 95% of our sales are via the Internet because we worked hard to build an excellent reputation as a trusted seller of high-quality European antiques. We pride ourselves on our customer service. (If you are nervous about shopping for antiques on the web, read my tips on How to Buy Antique Furniture Online.)

Aimee and Greg (center) talk at USC Moore School of Business

We also spoke to students in the Professional MBA program at the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business about entrepreneurship and what it’s like to own your own business. Dr. Richard Robinson has followed our story for the past 10 years since I wrote the original business plan for EuroLux in his Entrepreneurship class while I was working on my MBA at USC. We have spoken to his students several times throughout the years and I always enjoy encouraging folks to go out and chase their dreams.

Greg and I were at the University’s Columbia site, speaking to groups simultaneously and interactively in the Charlotte, Greenville and Charleston campuses. Some students who were on the road with their jobs in various spots around the country also tuned in live.

While it was very interesting to use the technology to reach so many folks in different locations, I definitely have to say it was a bit unnerving speaking via technology rather than being directly in front of an audience. I didn’t realize how much I depend on the non-verbal cues from an audience to feel comfortable while speaking.

I guess that even though our EuroLux business depends on web technology and Greg and I  are very familiar with that, even we still have to get used to other forms of new technology!

Research on Buying Better Quality Furniture

Research says 40% of consumers plan to buy better quality furniture next time! EuroLuxAntiques.comI just read an interesting article saying that 40% of consumers would choose to buy better quality furniture next time they make a purchase. Also, 24% wish they’d bought more durable furniture. That’s quite a high percentage of people who regret settling for cheaper options, or who want to trade up.

Only part of the article is available at the Furniture Today magazine website, but we enjoyed reading the full print piece to learn why people say they’d now choose better quality furniture.

We don’t need consumer research to convince us! Greg and I are very picky about the furniture we choose for our customers. Whether we’re scouting for antiques in Europe or selecting high-quality reproductions, our aim is to ensure you won’t find better quality furniture than you’ll see at at EuroLuxAntiques.com.

Shoppers in the research commented on the importance of quality materials like wood for durability. They want to invest more so their furniture lasts and doesn’t need replacing so often. We couldn’t agree more with the shopper who said:  “Cheap furniture starts to look cheap after a while.” Sometimes people just find their tastes and values evolve, and they want to buy furniture that truly reflects their personality.

Antique 1880 French Brittany Armoire with fabulous carvings. EuroLuxAntiques.comWhen you buy antique furniture, you know it will be unique to you and you know it can stand the test of time. Antiques appreciate in value with age. They grow even more beautiful, with a patina on the wood and an air of being much-loved.
If a piece is so finely constructed that it survives since 1880, like this fabulous antique French Brittany armoire carved in chestnut, it is likely to serve your family very well for years. It will probably be an heirloom piece for your children and grandchildren too!

Regency Style Bedside Table. EuroLuxAntiques.comCraftsmanship is a hallmark of quality furniture, as well as fine materials. Even the reproduction furniture and home accents we offer often involves some hand-crafting. For example, this solid wood Regency style bedside table, crafted with a galleried top, fluted legs, and a dovetail drawer construction. The bedside table has a lovely veneer that is hand-waxed and hand-rubbed to create an authentic distressed effect.

Dale Tiffany Lamp with dragonfly design in hand-rolled art glass. EuroLuxAntiques.comThis Dale Tiffany dragonfly table lamp replicates an original Louis Comfort Tiffany design. It is crafted to the same exacting standards of the original. Hand-rolled art glass on the dragonfly design shade ensures the high quality of this lamp. Doesn’t it look fabulous on that Art Nouveau base?

If you’re investing in better quality furniture always shop from a reputable business. That’s especially true if you are shopping online so you can browse a larger array of choices. Ideally, you can view photos of the furniture from different angles so you don’t have any surprises when it arrives.

When buying antique furniture, the dealer should be willing to answer any questions. I spend lots of time on the phone and email, answering our customers’ questions. I want to make sure they are comfortable with their choice for their home. Check out my tips on how to buy antique furniture on the internet.

What do you have to say on the subject of buying better quality furniture? Is good value all about the price, or is there more to it? Tell us in the comments box below!

How to Buy Antique Furniture Online

I work with a lot of repeat customers, and most of those customers started out skeptical about buying fine French antique furniture on the internet. I don’t blame them. It’s a large purchase that you can’t inspect in person before plunking down the cash. Who would be that crazy?

Luckily, many of our customers are “that crazy.” They not only took the plunge once, but they’ve come back again and again. They’ve learned the secret: Buying fine antique furniture online can be a fun, affordable way to fill your home with items you love to live with. Here are my tips for safely buying antique furniture on the internet.

1. Know Your Seller

Greg and I have been doing this for nearly ten years, so we have an online presence that’s easily discoverable by search engine. A Google search for “EuroLux Antiques” returns 96,000 results! You’ll find us on eBay, on YouTube, on Etsy. You’ll find reviews of us on Yelp and at our local Better Business Bureau. Of course, you’ll also find us on major social media sites, including Facebook, Pinterest, and Google+.

All of this exposure says several things about us (or any online seller). It shows we’ve been in business for awhile. It says we’re engaged with our clients. It says we’re reputable.

True, anyone can fake an online presence. That’s why we’re also easily accessible by phone at 803-276-4001. We have a bricks-and-mortar gallery (see photo below) with regular business hours. If you want to discover what type of customer service experience you’re likely to encounter with any internet seller, simply call their customer service number before you make a purchase. It might be an eye-opening experience for you!

2. Browse the Seller’s Website

But don’t browse their listings just yet. Head for the “About” link. No “About” link? That could be a red flag. Search for a similar page that tells you about the seller. The information you find on the seller’s “About” page can tell you a lot about the type of service to expect from them. And in the business of selling antiques online, service is everything.

Does the About page only give company information, or do you learn something about the actual people behind the business? Most customers would rather purchase antiques from a real person, not from a faceless company.

Check to see if the seller maintains a blog. What type of information does the blog contain? The tone and style of the blog’s content can give you some great clues about the character of the seller.

Lastly, check the seller’s Shipping and/or Terms page. Make sure they offer a reasonable shipping fee and a returns policy.

3. Check References or Testimonials

If you visit our eBay page, you’ll notice we have 100% positive feedback with over 3000 transactions. I’m very proud of that track record! But it’s not the end of the story. You’ll also find a virtual book containing dozens of testimonials from our clients on our website. If you’re considering buying antique furniture online and you don’t see plenty of customer testimonials on the seller’s website, don’t hesitate to ask for references

4. Ask about Flaws

Maintain a healthy skepticism toward any antiques seller who consistently lists items as being in “mint” or “near-mint” condition. Antique furniture, in particular, generally shows the slings and arrows of wear. In fact, that’s one reason people buy antiques: They love that “lived-in” look!

If the seller provides poor photos or few photos of antique items on its website, be sure to ask for more pictures or a detailed description of the furniture by phone. I’m always eager to describe the scratches and chips on a piece of antique furniture to a prospective customer because I want them to know precisely what they’re getting. Greg always takes multiple photos of every item from various angles to authentically represent the condition of antique furniture on our website. We strive to describe colors as accurately as possible. Because customer satisfaction is our top priority, we want our customers to know that “this buffet’s marble top has a chipped corner” or “that antique clock is missing a finial.” If you’re dealing with an online antiques seller who won’t reveal flaws in his or her merchandise, you might be wary of dealing with them.

This gorgeous Henry II antique French buffet, for example, experienced a shipping mishap so we replaced the original marble top with a similar piece of granite. Note how we state that right up front, in the description. You have a right to know exactly what you’re buying — from us or any other online antiques seller!

I hope this brief guide to buying antiques on the internet helps you shop with confidence. Remember, as the customer you always have the right to ASK. Any reputable seller should be happy to field your questions and help you feel comfortable making a large purchase. I know all of us at EuroLux strive to do just that.
