November Home Decor & Antiques Roundup

Thanksgiving trayWe hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! If you were so busy shopping, cooking and decorating for Thanksgiving that you didn’t have chance to drop by and see us on the blog, here are highlights from November so you can go back and read the stories in full. (And next year, check out our post on Easy Decor Ideas for your Traditional Thanksgiving Table. It might make life a bit simpler!)

Vintage Renaissance Table in Dining RoomMy favorite posts each month are always our client spotlights when we take a little tour of a customer’s home and see how they use the piece of furniture or decor that they bought from us. Last month was no exception as we visited Crystal B.’s Georgia kitchen to deliver a large 1950s vintage French dining table. Crystal has been hunting for the perfect table for her spacious open kitchen for 4 years and we were thrilled that this chunky Renaissance style table was the solution! See the full story and more photos of the vintage Renaissance table as well as Crystal’s lovely wrought iron pot rack packed with vintage appeal.

Kathy with her collection of Thanksgiving pilgrimsTalking of vintage appeal, we got a great response on our Facebook Page and other social media to our post about Kathy’s collection of Thanksgiving pilgrims. My mother-in-law has collected pilgrims and other Thanksgiving-themed objects for more than 30 years and her collection has grown to more than 700 pieces! We display this wonderful collection in our EuroLux Gallery window on Main Street, Newberry, SC, from October through Thanksgiving every year. People love seeing the pilgrims peeking out of our window! My Collection of Thanksgiving Pilgrims post tells you how the collection started and shows more photos.

traditional-bedroom French styleVisitors often come to stay through the holiday season so I started a series of posts about how to create a gorgeous guest room. The photos are SO inspiring and I hope that the posts help you think about how to make the guest bedroom inviting, comfortable and practical for your dear family and friends.

So far I’ve written two posts on this subject. One was about the essentials needed for a Beautiful Traditional Style Guest Room. The other focused on Stylish Seating Options for a Guest Bedroom, whether you have tons of space or a more compact nest for your visitors.

I hope that you find some useful home decor ideas or inspirational images in these recent highlights from our blog. Please come back and see us next month or sign up to receive blog posts by email. Let me know if there is a subject you would like me to write about… we love all comments and questions!

October Home Decor & Antiques Roundup

We hope you enjoy this quick “antiques roundup” of highlights from our October blog posts, linked to the original stories so you can go back to see them for yourself!

We had quite a busy month, including adopting a new cat and ooh-ing and aah-ing over the photos in our spotlight on our customer’s gorgeous Greco-Roman mansion home.

Greco-Roman mansion in Newberry, SCThis is the outside of that lovely house and the inside is just as amazing, filled with antique furniture chosen by our customer Tamra. She chose some beautiful pieces from us, including a French Country Louis XV refectory table, antique Hunting chairs and Hunting buffets, and a couple of antique Mechelen buffets. You really have to see this mini tour, so take a look at the full blog post about Antique French Furniture in a Classic Newberry Mansion.

Cat that Hurricane Joachmin blew inOur happiest news this month was the arrival of our new little tiger cat Pumpkin. She turned up on our doorstep looking wet and bedraggled after Hurricane Joachim dumped 18″ of rain in Newberry over one weekend.

When I opened the door, she pranced in as if she belonged here and pretty soon she did! She arrived just in time to be the star of my National Cat Day post.

You can see how she’s been making herself at home all over the gallery, and we’ve also shared recent cute photos of some of our other fur babies.

Welcome Pumpkin… named for the month you arrived!

Replace Wooden Roof on our Vintage BungalowWe were less happy a while ago when we found that the roof was leaking in the sun room of our 1920s vintage bungalow. During all our renovations, we hoped that we had about 5 years left in the existing roof but it turned out to be only 3 years. There was nothing for it but to Raise the Roof! As you can see in the post, we also added some skylights and chose a patriotic shingle and paint combo, so it all worked out just fine!

Safe House USA Marble Print duvet coverThe final highlight that I’d like to mention of our home decor blog posts this month is about the Marble Decor Trend. Marble in furnishings and architecture is, of course, a classic favorite, but now it’s getting a new boost of appreciation from the interior design world.

Aside from furniture featuring marble details, the current trend has inspired faux marble looks on everything from textiles to wallpaper! This marble print duvet cover is a great example of a fresh take on an eternally elegant material.

I look forward to spending November with you, sharing more ideas and stories about antique furniture and home decor. Stay cozy!

Marble Decor – A Classic Trend

We sell quite a lot of new and antique marble furniture. A buffet or nightstand with a marble top is always popular but we also have a nice range of sink chests with marble tops. We love the marble effect in decor and it seems like we’re in good company. Many design magazines and other decor media are saying that marble is very on trend right now.

Red Marble Eastlake VanityCertainly this month’s High Point Market – a huge and influential furniture market – showed a lot of marble finishes including marbled paper effects.  We think marble never went out of fashion, it’s been a design classic for centuries! But it’s great to know that it’s back in vogue again, whether it’s genuine marble or marble looks on everything from wallpaper to textiles. Here are some ideas of how to enjoy this elegant material in your home, starting with the real thing!

This fantastic 1890 American mahogany antique vanity or dressing table in the Eastlake style that we have in stock right now is topped with rose or red colored marble. The marble is  practical but it also gives an upscale look as well as a pretty burst of vintage color. You might also enjoy seeing this blog post about how our customer Kathleen made creative use of an antique French marble-top nightstand in her kitchen.

Safe House USA Marble Print duvet coverAnd this is even more creative – although of course it’s not real marble. (Brr, that would be chilly!)

The white marble print duvet cover from Safe House USA looks incredibly convincing but it’s really printed on a sanded poplin fabric.

The marble pattern looks fresh and airy and I think it could go with many traditional bedroom styles as well as with a more modern bedroom.

Dibbern Carrara TeacupIn the morning, you’ll want to be woken up with a cup of tea sipped from this Dibbern Carrara teacup.

Carrara is the Italian city famous for the marble quarried there, and this cup is part  of the Carrara range of fine bone china tableware with the subtle marble design. It’s made in Germany and sold by Dibbern retailers in the United States.

You can even find faux marble wallpapers, although I think it’s hard to beat this beautiful marble effect by Calico Wallpaper.

Calico Marble Wallpaper

I’ll keep looking out for marble finishes in home decor and if you spot the marble look cropping up somewhere unexpected, tell us in the comments box!

Antique-Inspired Home Decor from Aidan Gray and Sarreid

We’ve had a lot of good news lately and here’s another piece: we just started carrying home decor from two terrific makers: Aidan Gray and Sarreid.

Aidan Gray ChandelierAidan Gray creates wonderful antique-inspired designs in furniture, lighting and home accents. The Aidan Gray company is renowned for its European furniture styling, with a “one of a kind” custom look that echoes 17th and 18th century antiques.

The Aidan Gray collection boasts elegant lines and sophisticated finishes. Their pieces are crafted with authentic materials including solid wood and metals, antiqued mirrors, and painted ‘Old World’ effects.

This extravagant crystal prism chandelier is a great example of Aidan Gray’s show-stopping style!

Aidan Gray PlanterWe also admire this Aidan Gray planter, hand-crafted in iron. It delivers the touch of  “European Grandeur” that Aidan Gray always promises. I can imagine this planter standing in the Tuileries garden in Paris, can’t you?

Aidan Gray occasional chairThis elegant Aidan Gray occasional chair with a curved back would be perfectly at home in a grand country house in England or a picturesque French castle.

Fortunately we don’t need a castle to enjoy it as a delightful corner chair in a feminine bedroom. It would also look enchanting as the finishing touch in a study next to a writing desk, or as inviting occasional seating in any comfortable nook or alcove.

I love this piece because it is so unusual and yet classic.

New Writing Chest Antique style
Speaking of unusual, I want to show you a few pieces of Sarreid furniture and home decor accents too.

Sarreid is a 50-year-old company and it has an even larger collection of unusual vintage and antique-inspired furniture designs. How about this incredible solid walnut writing chest with gleaming brass hardware and a hinged top?

It looks as if it is at least a century old but it is newly crafted and the exquisite design makes it a versatile chest for many different uses. It’s a great signature piece to set the tone and add tons of character to any room.

Washed Gray Mirror recycledThis distinctive Sarreid mirror also stands out, made of recycled pine with oak and rubberwood veneers. The mirror panes are bordered by columns. It’s a very nice accent mirror that has the function of a looking glass but also adds architectural detail to a room and is a piece of wall art in itself.

Sarreid ChairFinally, we really like Sarreid’s leather chairs. The prices are amazingly good, especially when you see the high quality and chic styling.

This Sarreid Royal Rouge leather chair share shows you what we mean! Fans of vintage mid-century modern style will love this chair, although we also have many more antique style chairs in the collection.

I hope you enjoyed the mini-tour from these two new collections that we stock. We’re thrilled to be able to offer them to our customers… check out all the Aidan Gray furniture and home decor and Sarreid home decor on our website and tell us what you think!

Sea Shell Decor and Furniture

I loved writing my recent blog posts about beach style decor. As we’re now in the last days of summer I want to finish off the beach theme with a post about shell decor. Shells in furniture and lighting are such a unique natural material and they create a distinctive look that is full of light.  I hope that all you beachcombers enjoy scouring the ideas in this blog post, even if you live many miles inland!

Shell collections always look gorgeous displayed in glass jars, as you can see in this Los Angeles beach style bedroom. Shell adds a nautical atmosphere which is a great match for a seaside condo or coastal cottage. Shell also tends to reflect light and one big shell as a centerpiece on a dining table looks pretty by candlelight.

Shell sconceAnyone can enjoy shell decor and furnishings even if you live far from the ocean. For example, this tropical shell sconce light in our online store adds a touch of color and whimsy to a living room, bedroom or hallway. The shell sconce would look pretty in a bathroom too… for all you mermaids!

Currey Shell SideboardImagine teaming a pair of orange shell sconces with this fantastic Currey & Company natural shell sideboard. The intricate detail of the shell-encrusted cabinet is amazing. It’s perfect for your Mediterranean grotto bathroom!

Oyster Shell ChandelierMoving on to the dining room, can you picture this oyster shell chandelier hanging over your dining table? The Aiden Gray chandelier featuring genuine oyster shells is crafted with rustic rope details. Whether you like eating oysters or not, you can enjoy their famous aphrodisiac benefits. The eight electric candles create a truly romantic and unusual glow in your home!

Dale Tiffany Nautilus Shell LampAlthough this exquisite Dale Tiffany lamp is not actually made of shell, I have to mention it because it is hand-made in glass and styled with the sleek lines of a nautilus shell. The new Dale Tiffany Nautilus table lamp is crafted using traditional Tiffany glass techniques and each piece of hand-rolled art glass is hand cut, pieced and soldered by a glass artist. The sleek lines and opulent color ensure that the Tiffany table lamp will be a focal point for your room.
Orange shell throw pillow

Finally, If you’re really going shell crazy, add a throw pillow! This French textile and USA finished shell throw pillow is boldly and beautifully designed with orange coral and large white shells.

The detail is lovely and at a plumply generous 19 inches wide, the square throw pillow makes a gorgeous impact as a finishing touch to your decor.

I hope that I’ve provided a little inspiration to help you come out of your shell… (Groan!) Summer doesn’t have to go away just because the nights are getting shorter. I love the cheerful look of shell decor, as well as the natural beauty. Do you collect sea shells? Tell us about it in the comments!

Best of Summer 2015: Coastal Style, Collections & Corner Furniture

This has been a busy summer and we’ve covered a lot of ground in our antiques and home decor blog, including coastal style, corner furniture, client spotlights, and how to display collections. Let’s not forget our new cat porch! Here are the highlights of our favorite blog posts from June and July.

My series on how to display a collection showed some lovely examples of creative ways to display ceramics and jewelry, as well as the more unusual collections of vintage model trains and classic cameras.

Upcycled chandelier spoondelier 4 tiers

We were delighted to hear in July that the upcycled chandeliers that we stock were being featured on the Trashformers TV show on FYI Networks.

You can read about the Trashformers show and the upcycled chandeliers here and see some clips of the episodes too.

The chandeliers (or spoonderliers!) are custom-made by an artisan from vintage silver-plated spoons. The TV show picked them to feature as a good example of innovative upcycled design.

Woodbridge Neo Classic Corner TableOur most recent client spotlights both took a peek inside our customers’ homes to show how they’d used the antique-inspired tables they bought from us. We always love seeing our customers’ decor and we’re grateful that they share their photos with us… what a treat!  Bob in California ordered this Neo-Classic Woodbridge corner table from us and the photo of it in his living room inspired my post on corner furniture. These beautiful pieces make crafty use of every inch of space.

As it is high summer and the cool ocean breezes beckon, it felt like the perfect time to look at some inspiring  Beach Style Decor and Beach Style Textures and Home Accessories.

Whether you live by the water or just wish you did, you’ll find some wonderful ideas in that post about how to create your own coastal retreat!

Fozzy cat on the cat porchFinally, we are enjoying our new cat porch so much, we wonder how we ever did without it. Oh, the cats are pretty keen on it too. Here’s Fozzy looking down from on high, but the cat porch also includes perches and platforms for all our six cats, plus a fireman’s pole scratch post. Basically it’s Disney World for cats.

Our post on building a cat porch in our vintage bungalow shows how we did it with lots more photos too.

I look forward to sharing more about antiques and decor with you as we head into August. Let us know in the comments if there is a subject you would us to talk about or come visit us on our Facebook page. For now, happy August!

The Fleur-de-Lis in Home Decor

Many of the French antiques and antique-inspired home accessories that pass through our hands at EuroLuxHome.com feature the fleur-de-lis motif. The fleur-de-lis is one of the most enduring symbols in furniture and home decor and it has appeared in art, architecture, and heraldic designs for many centuries. Here’s some background on the fleur-de-lis and some ideas on how to incorporate this elegant symbol into your own decor around the house.

In French, ‘fleur’ means flower and ‘lis’ means lily, so a fleur-de-lis is a stylized lily. The one on this iron gate in New Orleans is a perfect example. It’s also sometimes spelled as fleur-de-lys.

Red Handwoven Pillow Fleur de LisAlthough the fleur-de-lis has cropped up in architecture, arts, flags and heraldry all over Europe, it is especially linked to France and to the French monarchy.

It has appeared on French flags and coats of arms for around a thousand years, and later it adorned French postage stamps too. The king of Spain and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg also display the motif in their coats of arms.

This new handwoven Aubusson throw pillow (one of our selection of fleur-de-lis pillows) shows how regal the motif looks, especially in rich colors like gold and red. It’s perfect for Renaissance style decor! The fleur-de-lis also works beautifully with French Country style.

Antique French Gothic BenchThere are various stories about the origins of the fleur-de-lis symbol, which also links it with the wild iris, but it was certainly used as a decorative or symbolic motif by the earliest civilizations as well as throughout European history.

The universal image also has religious meaning as a reference to the holy Mother Mary and it represents purity and chastity. With its 3 “petals”, the fleur-de-lis also symbolizes the Holy Trinity. Not surprisingly, it is often seen in Christian religious art and on antique religious objects.

This 1880 French Gothic antique bench is heavily carved in oak with flowery details including a gallery of fleur-de-lis along the top of the bench back.

Because the classic lines of the fleur-de-lis work with any kind of design scheme, you can add a touch of regal style anywhere in the home.

Here the fleur-de-lis is hand-painted by an artist on the stove hood of a Tuscan style kitchen in San Francisco.

The symbol is stately but still quite subtle on the floor of this traditional pool house.

The flourishing symbol also glitters overhead in this glass transom over a doorway. What a flamboyant way to greet visitors!

The fleur-de-lis translates nicely to finials on wood or iron curtain rods. These style of rod for drapes is so popular, we are all familiar with seeing it,  but not everyone knows that it’s a fleur-de-lis design.

Now you will start seeing fleur-de-lis designs everywhere!

Beautiful Beach Style Decor

Whether you live near the ocean or are enjoying summer in the city, beach style decor is always a refreshing and comfortable look.  I’ve been thinking about the elements of beach style that make this relaxed and cheerful look work. Here are some tips for year-round summer beach style.

Let’s start with blue and white… of course! These classic nautical colors quickly make any space look crisp and breezy.

This home on Whidbey Island in Washington has a wonderful view and a telescope to explore every inch of that view. But even if you aren’t lucky enough to overlook the water, I can also imagine curling up cozily on the window seat and watching the the clouds or reading a book. Blue and white stripes add another nautical touch. A ship’s wheel design on the pillow also looks cute. Telescope and maritime decorFans of Brittany style antique furniture will know that the ship wheel is a popular motif for the sea-faring French region too.

The telescope in the Whidbey Island house looks so authentic… here’s a reminder that we have some antique-style telescopes in our online store if you are looking to buy one!

Pale blue also works fabulously for beach style. There’s a reason that they call it aqua! The delicate blue color in this Calgary bathroom is Gossamer Blue by Benjamin Moore Paints. The clean white trim and white wainscoting also lends a beach cottage feel. White beadboard always looks so fresh.

Stanley saltbox white nightstand beachyIn a similar vein, this new Stanley Furniture nightstand is a perfect choice for a beach style bedroom, or even as a handy side table in a bathroom or hallway. The white louvered cabinet doors remind us of shutters on coastal houses. The nightstand is also available in other beachy colors: teal blue, tropical Spanish orange, and Gloucester gray.

This beach style decor in this turn-of-the-century cottage once again shows the summery mood created by blue and white. It’s so easy, yet so elegant! White wainscoting and a brick fireplace create visual texture, as do the wicker chairs.

Rattan armchair beach styleWicker and rattan are always practical and attractive choices for a coastal home.  This new rattan armchair that we stock has a rustic and casual feel that will be a great match for beach style decor. Pop it on the porch or use it as an accent chair in the living room. Or just relax in the rattan armchair in your tropically inspired bar area! It’s such a versatile piece. That’s part of the beauty of beach style decor… it works well for all kinds of spaces and all kinds of people.

In my next blog post I’ll look more at the materials and textures that quickly create beach style in your home, as well as the finishing touches of beach style home accessories. Till then, mind the waves!
