September Home Decor & Antiques Roundup

If you’ve been too busy to read our home decor and antiques blog recently, you missed some great Customer Home Spotlights and other news.  Here’s a quick “antiques roundup” of our September posts, linked to the original stories so you can go back to see them for yourself!

French Antique chairs in restaurantA couple of years ago we sold a set of antique Renaissance chairs to La Biblioteca, a tequila bar that offers more than 350 tequilas in Denver, CO. It’s part of the empire of Richard Sandoval Restaurants so we were delighted to see how great our chairs looked in this gorgeous bar and to read the rave reviews of La Biblioteca in the press. See more about the antique French chairs and the restaurant in the full blog post.

antique French dining chairs RenaissanceOur customers Lenore and John recently purchased a charming old cottage next to a babbling brook and they bought several pieces of antique furniture from us to furnish it. This photo shows a beautifully carved antique French Henry II buffet and a set of vintage French Renaissance dining chairs dating to about 1930. Read the whole Cottage Style with Antique Furniture post to see more about this room, plus the master bedroom where Lenore creatively used a pretty Louis XVI buffet as part of the bedroom suite!

Loft of store with vintage signCloser to home we took a trip down memory lane by sharing the historic story of our buildings on Main Street, Newberry, SC.

The plot of the story explains the mystery behind the sign on the wall of our antiques store. It dates back to the 1930s and it’s a tale of rivalry and a good idea gone wrong. This story ends with a bang!

Read about it in the post: Vintage Life: The Mystery Behind the Sign.

Houzz Recommended BadgeWe also shared two pieces of good news. Houzz has awarded us a Recommended badge (given to the top-rated pros on Houzz.com) and an Influencer badge, given to pros on Houzz whose “advice and knowledgeable posts are most appreciated by the Houzz community.”  We already received a Best of Houzz 2015 award for our customer service. If you want to see me brag (and also wonder about Clint Eastwood’s role in all of this) check out the Houzz Home Decor Honors post.

Antique-Inspired Home Decor from Aidan Gray and Sarreid

We’ve had a lot of good news lately and here’s another piece: we just started carrying home decor from two terrific makers: Aidan Gray and Sarreid.

Aidan Gray ChandelierAidan Gray creates wonderful antique-inspired designs in furniture, lighting and home accents. The Aidan Gray company is renowned for its European furniture styling, with a “one of a kind” custom look that echoes 17th and 18th century antiques.

The Aidan Gray collection boasts elegant lines and sophisticated finishes. Their pieces are crafted with authentic materials including solid wood and metals, antiqued mirrors, and painted ‘Old World’ effects.

This extravagant crystal prism chandelier is a great example of Aidan Gray’s show-stopping style!

Aidan Gray PlanterWe also admire this Aidan Gray planter, hand-crafted in iron. It delivers the touch of  “European Grandeur” that Aidan Gray always promises. I can imagine this planter standing in the Tuileries garden in Paris, can’t you?

Aidan Gray occasional chairThis elegant Aidan Gray occasional chair with a curved back would be perfectly at home in a grand country house in England or a picturesque French castle.

Fortunately we don’t need a castle to enjoy it as a delightful corner chair in a feminine bedroom. It would also look enchanting as the finishing touch in a study next to a writing desk, or as inviting occasional seating in any comfortable nook or alcove.

I love this piece because it is so unusual and yet classic.

New Writing Chest Antique style
Speaking of unusual, I want to show you a few pieces of Sarreid furniture and home decor accents too.

Sarreid is a 50-year-old company and it has an even larger collection of unusual vintage and antique-inspired furniture designs. How about this incredible solid walnut writing chest with gleaming brass hardware and a hinged top?

It looks as if it is at least a century old but it is newly crafted and the exquisite design makes it a versatile chest for many different uses. It’s a great signature piece to set the tone and add tons of character to any room.

Washed Gray Mirror recycledThis distinctive Sarreid mirror also stands out, made of recycled pine with oak and rubberwood veneers. The mirror panes are bordered by columns. It’s a very nice accent mirror that has the function of a looking glass but also adds architectural detail to a room and is a piece of wall art in itself.

Sarreid ChairFinally, we really like Sarreid’s leather chairs. The prices are amazingly good, especially when you see the high quality and chic styling.

This Sarreid Royal Rouge leather chair share shows you what we mean! Fans of vintage mid-century modern style will love this chair, although we also have many more antique style chairs in the collection.

I hope you enjoyed the mini-tour from these two new collections that we stock. We’re thrilled to be able to offer them to our customers… check out all the Aidan Gray furniture and home decor and Sarreid home decor on our website and tell us what you think!

Houzz Home Decor Honors for EuroLux Home

Houzz Award badgeWe only started selling on Houzz.com last summer but already we’ve been blown away by the great interior design community there and the great home decor advice. We were especially pleased to receive a congratulations email from Houzz saying that EuroLux Home had been awarded more honors!

Houzz Recommended BadgeIn January I posted that EuroLux Home won a Best of Houzz 2015 award for our customer satisfaction and service. That was terrific, but now we’ve got more good news to celebrate as we’ve received two new badges. We received the Recommended badge which is given to the top-rated pros on Houzz.

Houzz Influencer Badge We also received The Influencer badge, given to pros on Houzz whose “advice and knowledgeable posts are most appreciated by the Houzz community.” I love that title… “The Influencer.” It sounds like a movie starring Clint Eastwood!Clint Eastwood

I don’t know if  Clint is very big on home decor, but I’m sure that Greg will be happy to stand in for him as The Influencer. He’ll be thrilled to play THAT role!

Joking aside, we are very grateful that the Houzz community enjoys what we do. Our new and antique furniture and home decor accents have also been featured in many Houzz editorials.

Just out of interest, I checked on our last few sales in our EuroLux Home Houzz shop. Our Houzz customers are a very diverse group of people with a wide range of tastes.

Bench by EuroLuxHome
Recent customers have bought sets of antique dining chairs, a beautiful cast resin pointer dog sculpture, some exquisite hand-crafted Aubusson throw pillows, and this handsome new French Country style bench boasting a hand-woven rattan seat.

Our lighting collections are also very popular with Houzz style-seekers including lighting by Jonathan Charles, Dale Tiffany, and Currey and Company.

We hope that you’ll come and follow EuroLux Home on Houzz if you have an account. (It’s free, of course.) Check out our customer projects too.

Meanwhile, we’ll carry on chatting with our home decor friends on Houzz and we’ll enjoy our new role as The Influencer!

Client Spotlight: Retrofit Sink Chest

We love it when our customers get creative with pieces they buy from us. This chest of drawers retrofit into a sink chest is a great example.

Antique French Style Chest of DrawersOur customer Edwin Miller of Edwin Miller Interiors found this new French style chest among our selection of new and antique chests of drawers and thought it would make an excellent sink chest!

The antique-inspired chest of drawers (item number BG-265) is crafted with a solid wood construction and toned brass French hardware. The curvy carved apron front and cabriole legs add to the French style charm and the gorgeous distressed finish gives the chest of drawers an authentic antique look.

Edwin had the three-drawer chest converted to a sink chest and it does look fantastic in his client’s guest bathroom!

Retrofit Sink Chest French style

The vessel sink is a perfect match for the chest of drawers and you can really see the quality of the wood finish in this photo.  Edwin Miller’s website notes that he is known for his high quality “finish selections, attention to detail and expression of client individuality, emphasizing refined sophistication.” We can see from this lovely retrofitted sink chest that he’s done it again!

If you don’t feel like converting a chest of drawers into a sink chest yourself, you might want to check out some of our beautifully crafted antique-inspired sink chests.

Ambella Home Sink Chest AugustineFor example, this Ambella Home Augustine sink chest features detailed rope carving, a white porcelain sink and a beautiful Emperador marble top.  The three-drawer petite sink chest has a rich mahogany finish.

We work with quite a few people who are building houses and the Ambella Home sink chests are always a big hit.

We can order sink chests of all sizes for our customers, from large double sinks to petite sink chests to tuck into a powder room.

Ambella Home Sink Chest Mini This mini Ambella Home sink chest may be small – a slim 23.5 inches wide, to be exact – but what it lacks in size it makes up for in looks! The antique-inspired sink chest has a mahogany frame and an Imperial Beige marble top. Swirl mahogany veneers add to the decorative effect of the very pretty sink chest. I’d team it with a pair of sconces on the wall on either side of the sink for an elegant glow.

Thanks to interior designer Edwin Miller for sending us the photo of retrofitted sink chest – we hope his clients enjoy using it for many years!

Beautiful Beach Style Decor

Whether you live near the ocean or are enjoying summer in the city, beach style decor is always a refreshing and comfortable look.  I’ve been thinking about the elements of beach style that make this relaxed and cheerful look work. Here are some tips for year-round summer beach style.

Let’s start with blue and white… of course! These classic nautical colors quickly make any space look crisp and breezy.

This home on Whidbey Island in Washington has a wonderful view and a telescope to explore every inch of that view. But even if you aren’t lucky enough to overlook the water, I can also imagine curling up cozily on the window seat and watching the the clouds or reading a book. Blue and white stripes add another nautical touch. A ship’s wheel design on the pillow also looks cute. Telescope and maritime decorFans of Brittany style antique furniture will know that the ship wheel is a popular motif for the sea-faring French region too.

The telescope in the Whidbey Island house looks so authentic… here’s a reminder that we have some antique-style telescopes in our online store if you are looking to buy one!

Pale blue also works fabulously for beach style. There’s a reason that they call it aqua! The delicate blue color in this Calgary bathroom is Gossamer Blue by Benjamin Moore Paints. The clean white trim and white wainscoting also lends a beach cottage feel. White beadboard always looks so fresh.

Stanley saltbox white nightstand beachyIn a similar vein, this new Stanley Furniture nightstand is a perfect choice for a beach style bedroom, or even as a handy side table in a bathroom or hallway. The white louvered cabinet doors remind us of shutters on coastal houses. The nightstand is also available in other beachy colors: teal blue, tropical Spanish orange, and Gloucester gray.

This beach style decor in this turn-of-the-century cottage once again shows the summery mood created by blue and white. It’s so easy, yet so elegant! White wainscoting and a brick fireplace create visual texture, as do the wicker chairs.

Rattan armchair beach styleWicker and rattan are always practical and attractive choices for a coastal home.  This new rattan armchair that we stock has a rustic and casual feel that will be a great match for beach style decor. Pop it on the porch or use it as an accent chair in the living room. Or just relax in the rattan armchair in your tropically inspired bar area! It’s such a versatile piece. That’s part of the beauty of beach style decor… it works well for all kinds of spaces and all kinds of people.

In my next blog post I’ll look more at the materials and textures that quickly create beach style in your home, as well as the finishing touches of beach style home accessories. Till then, mind the waves!

Client Spotlight: Jonathan Charles Buckingham Console Table

Linda K. sent some photos of her new living room in Wayne, PA, featuring the beautiful new Jonathan Charles console table that she bought from us.
Jonathan Charles console table Buckingham
The mahogany console table from the Jonathan Charles Buckingham collection is crafted in Late Regency style with an antiqued finish. The elegant wood detailing, ornate drawer handles, and fluted and tapered legs capture the Regency style perfectly.
Jonathan Charles Console Table BuckinghamHere’s the Buckingham console table in its new home. Linda has been doing a lot of work on the room although she ruefully added that her new living room project was going very slowly. Linda, tell us about it! We’ve been working on our 1920s vintage bungalow renovation for several years and we know how long these things take.

We think the room looks great already, with those gorgeous floors and the striking piece of art creating a focal point over the console table. It also looks like the windows are huge! Lots of lovely light in that room!
Jonathan Charles Buckingham Console Table
Linda says, ” The living room is starting to come together but we still need a rug, sconces on the wall, ficus trees in the corners with lighting, new window treatments AND the new beautiful couches came in the wrong fabric!” Linda order her new couches from a high-end chain and the sofas came in a light green or sea foam color.

“They were supposed to be much darker in color with a more olive green background, along with some beiges and browns,” Linda said. She was waiting for the chain to put the new order in so she could get the new couches in June sometime. I hope they’ve arrived with you by now, Linda!

In any case, Linda is very philosophical about it all. I guess we have to be sometimes, or we’d go crazy. Linda said, “At any rate, it’s small problems – just been a headache. Glad our console table was a breeze!”

We enjoyed dealing with Linda too. She found us on Bonanza.com and was very pleasant to work with. Here is a link to our Bonanza store.  Of course, you can also find this Jonathan Charles console table and all our fine antique French furniture and antique-inspired new furniture and lighting on our EuroLuxHome.com website too.

Client Spotlight: Woodbridge Corner Table

After our customer Bob sent a photo of the Woodbridge corner table he bought from us, I started looking at other creative ways to make the most of every inch of space with corner furniture.  Bob S. in Castro Valley, CA, ordered this Neo-Classic corner table: Woodbridge Neo Classic Corner TableThe new Woodbridge Furniture Company corner table is beautifully crafted with a solid wood construction and hand-distressed cherry veneers. Woodbridge Corner table The elegant design is inspired by 19th century Neo-Classic originals and it’s a neat 3 feet wide.  Bob emailed us to say “It looks great in the living room.” You can see how well it tucks into the corner!

Bob is using the table for his lovely lamp but you could also use it as an accent table in a hallway, as a TV stand for a small flat screen TV in a guest room, or even as a corner nightstand in a cozy cottage bedroom. The two drawers and lower shelf provide plenty of storage options or a place to stack your magazines, even in a compact space!

Here are some more ideas for corner furniture.

Ambella Home Agatha Corner cabinetThis new Ambella Home corner cabinet from the Agatha Contempo collection makes a very handsome statement. It is nearly 8 feet tall and shows how a corner cabinet creates extra display options in a room that perhaps doesn’t have much wall space. You could enjoy this fine piece of furniture as a china cabinet too. A corner cabinet can be used to create a focal point in a room, or perhaps to soften the angles of a very square or linear space.

Jonathan Charles Corner ChairA corner chair makes an unusual addition to a home, like this new Jonathan Charles corner chair from the Country Farmhouse collection, superbly crafted in walnut wood. It makes maximum use of any neglected corner and the rich barley twists and classic finials guarantee that the corner chair will be a great visual accent too. The rush seat suits a Country Farmhouse living room or kitchen or any traditional or rustic decor. It’s a super chair for a small entryway too, making it easy to change your boots without taking up tons of space!

Finally, this traditional kitchen in Minneapolis shows that even the kitchen sink can benefit from the corner treatment! The deep farmhouse sink allows the best views from that large corner window. Putting the sink in the corner also frees up more counter space for people to work at.

Do you enjoy using corner furniture in your home? Do you use it to make maximum use of your space or just because you love the look? We’d love to hear your comments!

Client Spotlight: Antique French Style Game Table

I loved seeing the photos our customer Marie-Regina S. in Mountainhome, PA sent of the antique French style game table she bought from us. We got a great glimpse into her beautifully decorated living room!
Woodbridge Game TableThis is the new Woodbridge game table that Marie-Regina chose from our range of vintage and antique-inspired game tables. The high-quality card table follows early 18th century French styling and it is crafted in solid wood with a cherry veneer.  The Woodbridge Furniture Company people are very clever with their distressing skills. The hand-rubbed finish gives an aged look that would fool a lot of people into thinking it was an original antique.
antique inspired Woodbridge games tableHere’s the antique-inspired game table in Marie-Regina’s home. This room is so inviting… it looks like a cozy place to spend a few hours playing cards! I can also imagine relaxing here with a good book or chatting with company. Notice how well Marie-Regina defines the conversation area with a large rug, while a separate rug defines the game table area.
Woodbridge Games Table Antique French styleZooming in for a closer look at the Woodbridge game table, you can see the rich sheen of the hand-waxed finish on the square table top. The careful craftsmanship extends to the shapely and typically French stylized cabriole legs. When Marie-Regina sent the photos of the table, she added, “We love it!”

I can see why… and it pairs perfectly with those handsome wood windows. Personally, I love the upholstery on the chairs. There is so much to enjoy in this room, from the framed lattice design on the far wall to the French style sideboard and the elegant lighting. Marie-Regina has immaculate taste and I’m glad she invited us into her home so we could admire it. And now for a game of cards?

If you enjoy cards, chess, and other family games (even shuffleboard!) take a look at our selection of vintage and antique-inspired game tables. We try to select tables that are gorgeous pieces of furniture in themselves, as well as being fun for entertainment after a dinner party or during a family holiday. We hope you agree with us!

Home Trends: Gold Decor Creates a Glow

A while ago I wrote a post about the current home decor trend for mixed metals but today I’m going to shine the spotlight on pure gold! A Decorilla report on the best designer trends at Maison & Objet 2015 in Paris said that gold is this year’s metal of choice.

As the “it” metal color, gold crops up in all kinds of materials and accents, not just metal itself. Let’s take a look at some golden inspirations to add a warm glow and vibrant energy to any home decor. Here comes the sun…

The bold gold approach to this powder room turns the smallest room into a sun palace!
Gold leaf or gold paint on the door, trim, and ceiling create a bright shimmer, but the dark blue wallpaper tones the look down so it isn’t too blingy. An antiqued gold console table, mirror frame, and light fixture enhance the Old World feel.

Ann Sacks Gold TileGold diggers can also use tiles to add a golden gleam to bathrooms or perhaps even a conservatory. These Ann Sacks Davlin tiles are handmade with European gold leaf fused between two pieces of glass.  The look is classic enough for traditional decor, but it would also work in a contemporary space.

Gold and white always looks elegant. Gold is the most opulent and rich-looking metal and when you dress it down with pure and simple white the result is luminous and graceful.

Here is more white and gold with a younger, fresher feel. The Modern Regency style would be so pretty for a young woman’s bedroom, perhaps a daughter or granddaughter. The graphic gold polka dots are decals, which makes it easy to remove them when you want a change of scene.  A gold vintage chandelier hangs above crisp white linens and the simple nightstand is set off with gold handles. A bedroom fit for a 21st century princess!

Jonathan Charles Gold Side TableOn the other hand, gold with black looks dramatic and luxurious, creating a chic focal point in a room.

This black and gold Jonathan Charles oval table proves the point. The 1930s style lacquer and gilt side table with a glass top is one of many gold tables in our online store and it’s one of the most striking.

You don’t need a lot of gold to pack a visual punch. Just a little to punctuate the black does the job perfectly.

Chelsea House Gold Console TableThis fine Chelsea House console table is another “gilty treat” we can all enjoy! The petite Mumford console table is just 42 inches long and a little over a foot deep, but this pretty package deserves a gold medal for its Empire styling and delicious gold accents.Gold bracket Jonathan Charles Gold Wall Hanging

A little also goes a long way in this delightful Chelsea House wall bracket (left), and in the pair of Jonathan Charles wall hangings from the Versailles collection, featuring gilding and carved decoration in the Renaissance style.

Jonathan Charles wall hangingsYou can see that the pair of gold wall hangings add that final decorative touch to the room, balancing the handsome wood display cabinet and bringing a ray of sunshine into the space.

If you’ve enjoyed browsing these photos, then you might like to see my story about the gold Woodbridge coffee table in our customer’s sunny California home, or get more inspiration from the mixed metal decor trend.

The Art Deco Bedroom

Our EuroLux Home Houzz page has already been featured in many Houzz.com ideabooks and we’ve even won a Best of Houzz 2015 award for our customer service! But it’s still a thrill when I receive an email saying “Hi Aimee, Congratulations! You were hand-picked by one of our writers to be featured in an editorial ideabook on the homepage of Houzz.”

Ambella Home Art Deco Bed ManhattanThe latest piece of happy news from Houzz was to inform us that this Ambella Home bed from the Manhattan collection was featured in an ideabook on The Beguiling Art Deco Bedroom. Who could resist that title? The article talks about how Art Deco “exuded both opulence and minimalism” with glittering finishes and stark style lines.  Ambella Home Bed Headboard Manhattan

The Ambella Home Manhattan bed, which comes in both king and queen sizes, clearly reflects the Art Deco look perfectly! Glamour comes calling in the beautifully crafted white leather-like headboard upholstery, studded with a classic pattern in silver-tone nickel nailheads. The wood base makes a sleek partner to the headboard.

People say that styles come back around every 50 and 100 years, and Art Deco is definitely “hot” right now. You can see the Art Deco influence in the Hollywood Regency furniture I’ve written about recently. Our own 1920s vintage bungalow dates to the same era.

French Art Deco Buffet

We have some great Art Deco buffets and other furniture coming soon on our next container of antiques from France.

That transatlantic ship should arrive in a month or two, and we can’t wait to unwrap the pieces of antique French furniture that we bought!

This is a photo of my favorite Art Deco buffet due to arrive in that next delivery of French antiques. The beautifully carved lines make it so distinctive and you really can’t replicate the warm and mellow tones of the aged wood.

This unusual Art Deco bar cabinet will arrive in the same container of antiques. It is photographed against a strange hot pink wall, but please don’t hold that against it!
Art Deco Bar Cabinet Antique

The carvings and gleaming mirror and glass are all gorgeous. And looking at this, it’s crazy to think that the excitement of the jazz age was really a whole century ago…

I’ll write a blog post about Art Deco soon as part of my series about learning furniture history and styles. Then I can talk more about the details and feel of the Art Deco style and show you more fantastically decadent photos.

Till then, you can browse the entire Houzz ideabook on The Beguiling Art Deco Bedroom. Sweet dreams!
