Paint Decor Trends 2017: Taupe, Gray & Honey Glow

Recently I told you that many big paint companies have declared purple to be important for home decor this year, in my post: Paint Color Decor Trends 2017: Purple Reigns!  Those purplish hues are subtle but they still aren’t for everyone. If you’re looking for more inspiring colors, these are the other major paint company color trends for 2017. The focus here is on neutral taupe and gray, warmed up with a delicious honey glow!

Sherwin Williams Poised Taupe

Sherwin-Williams named Poised Taupe SW 6039 as the color to define 2017. They like the warm and calming taupe because it “creates a cozy lifestyle and brings a sense of sanctuary into our homes.”  They also mention the beauty found in “lived-in” homes. Homes that “are allowed to age gracefully and show the wear and tear of everyday life. Every scratch, crack and mark records a story, a memory.” Greg and I agree with that. We have the same feeling about our french antique furniture, where each piece has been loved for a long time before we buy it and ship it to the USA to sell to our customers. Each piece tells a story.

Kettleman paint

Kelly-Moore Paints chose this sophisticated gray called Kettleman as the company’s 2017 paint color of the year. Although this photo shows it in a contemporary decor room, I can imagine this easily in a traditional library where it would look classically masculine, like those Old English rooms that we see in historical dramas. Just pop a traditional leather sofa or chair in the room and an antique-inspired desk and it would be very cozy! I can also see Kettleman paint working with vintage Hollywood Regency style decor. A bit of silver chrome and shiny surfaces like mirrored furniture would create dramatic glamour!

Honey Glow paint

Dunn-Edwards Paints named Honey Glow as its 2017 Color of the Year. This warm golden yellow is full of happy energy. It is probably best used in small doses, to create an accent wall or for trim, or in color blocks to frame a specific area of wall. The best thing is that the paint company will donate 10 percent of sales of paint tinted in Honey Glow to HoneyLove.org, a nonprofit organization that supports urban beekeeping and shows us how to make our gardens bee-friendly. Very cool. I hope this creates quite a BUZZ! (That was impossible to resist!)

We’d love to hear from you in the comments box. What do you think of the home decor paint colors for 2017?

Best of April 2014: National Decorating Month

April was National Decorating Month and I hope that our blog posts helped inspire ideas for your home!  Let’s revisit some of our favorite antiques and decor posts from April.

National Decorating Month gray decorGray popped up as a hot decor trend for 2014, so in National Decorating Month I wrote a post on Gray Decor in the bedroom & living room. Gray is so adaptable. It works well with natural materials in a rustic country setting and in sophisticated city rooms. It’s great with exotic or heavy textures too, like this Castilian themed Ambella Home bedroom.
Madrid dining chair set
Our Madrid dining chairs client spotlight about Heidi’s chic dining room also emphasized the beauty of neutral colors. Heidi has a set of our linen-upholstered Spanish style chairs in her dining room.  The  pale gray paint on the walls and the light tones of the carpet and  chairs give a fresh twist to the room’s traditional Spanish Mission style influence. Heidi’s dining room is perfectly timeless but also perfectly NOW!
Hand-painted ceramics add a colorful touch in National Decorating MonthFor a splash of color, you don’t always need a big decorating project. I think it keeps the spirit of National Decorating Month to use smaller accents and creative touches to ring the changes in your home. For example, our client Bunny sent us this photo of her kitchen adorned with old Italian Deruta ceramics she bought from us. See more in our post on the sunny Mediterranean style of hand-painted Vintage Deruta Ceramics.

Antiques deals in National Decorating MonthDuring National Decorating Month, Greg and I worked hard at spring cleaning and sorting some of our older stock. The good news for you is that we’ve slashed prices by about 40% (or more!) on some beautiful antiques and vintage pieces that are still waiting for a good home. See some of our favorite bargains in our Spring Cleaning Antiques Deals post. Or visit EuroLuxAntiques.com to browse for deals on antique furniture, lighting, clocks, ceramics, and other smaller items.
Atlantique Antique Show
Finally, we celebrate our 10th anniversary in 2014 and we’re having great fun remembering highlights from our early years. If you want to know what NOT to do when a slab of marble on an Art Deco sideboard breaks just before a major antiques show, read this post on our First Atlantique Antique Show. We had a Laurel and Hardy moment involving the marble, too much glue, and a glass-topped hotel table. It’s funny to look back on, even if it wasn’t so funny at the time!

Thanks for spending National Decorating Month with us. We’ll share more ideas and inspiration about antiques and home decor in May.

2014 Trends: Elegant Gray Decor

Gray decor is apparently rocking the trends lists for 2014. I don’t think it was ever off-trend! As April is National Decorating Month we’ve all got an excuse to rethink our interiors. Maybe even try some new and creative decorating techniques.

Greg and I been working to get our drywall up in our 1920s bungalow renovation project. We also finally finished the HVAC a few weeks ago after interruptions with freak snowstorms! We’re not ready to think about finishing touches on the interiors yet. But if you plan to paint any rooms in your home, gray decor is a great way to go.

Gray Decor by Benjamin MooreGray is the new black, according to Realtor magazine’s 10 hottest home design trends for 2014. I also remember when gray was the new brown, and then the new white. Funny how gray can’t just be the old gray that we love already! The serene living room above features Benjamin Moore‘s Thunder color paint on the walls. It shows how beautifully gray works with natural materials. It’s a perfect match for wood, stone, and natural fabrics like linen.

FarrowBallGrayDecorThis gray decor in this classic and inviting living room is created with Farrow and Ball’s French Gray on the walls and London Stone trim. That French Gray tone was also popular in 19th century wallpapers.

Victorian Gray decor wallpaper

The Victorian style floral wallpaper in our Victorian Bed and Breakfast client spotlight is a great example. Our customers Kathy and Tim renovated a beautiful Victorian mansion in Walla Walla, Washington, and opened it as the Vine and Roses Bed & Breakfast. We helped them furnish it with antiques including this French Country dresser. The dresser looks fabulous against the gray wallpaper accented with vivid red flowers.
In Victorian times, gray decor was also often seen in entry halls, hallways and staircases. Supposedly the simple gray wouldn’t compete with the surrounding rooms. I suspect it held its own quite well!

Gray decor bedroom with furniture by Ambella Home

Gray decor is sophisticated and soothing in a bedroom too. Because gray is such a subtle tone it can take a lot of texture. The textured gray walls and patterned linens in this bedroom prove the point. Anyone who worries that gray will be too staid will be reassured by this elegantly exotic room, featuring the Ambella Home Castilian king bed and chest of drawers that we stock in the gallery.

French Provincial dining chairs for gray decorIf you don’t want to decorate completely in gray, a few gray accents still create the mood. This set of 6 new French Country dining chairs looks authentically rustic, but with a nod to contemporary color. Crafted in solid mahogany, the chairs have a soft gray wash finish to make them look well-loved and well-worn. The gray complements the natural color of the handwoven rush seating perfectly.
