Client Spotlight: Vintage French Rococo Chairs

Our customer Fran P. found this beautiful set of vintage French Rococo dining chairs in our listings on Chairish, but she made the smart decision to track down our website EuroLuxHome.com and reach out to me directly for a best price! As Fran only lives about two hours from us in Concord, NC, she decided to drive down to our store in Newberry, SC, in order to pick up the chairs in person.

Vintage Rococo French Dining Chair Set

The set of 6 mahogany vintage French dining chairs dates to 1950 and the chairs are full of charming Rococo appeal. The sensuously curvy lines, the cabriole legs, and the carved curlicues on the mahogany wood frame are the perfect match for the chic pinky beige fabric upholstery. The sweet nailhead trim accents the glamorous silhouette, making these vintage Rococo French chairs a truly delicious treat as a dining room set.

Vintage French Rococo Dining Chairs

It was a real pleasure meeting Fran and her daughter, and you can see how truly wonderful the chairs look in Fran’s dining room. Fran said, “It was such a pleasure to visit, your items are beautiful, and we love our purchase!” We are pleased to have such a happy customer and we agree that this set of chairs is perfect for Fran’s dining room. The faded pink upholstery works very well with the pinks, mauves, and cranberry in her rug and she did a great job of finding such a good set of vintage chairs to blend in both color and style with her mahogany Rococo table. The gorgeous gilded Rococo mirror adds even more glam to room.

Vintage Capodimonte Chandelier ItalianFran says that she is now looking to replace the brass chandelier. I think this vintage Italian Capodimonte chandelier in our gallery would look fantastic. It  dates to 1950 and has an unusual cherub motif that is adorable. The angelic pastel pink and blue colors bring the scenes to life and the metal arms curve in a very elegant way. This relatively rare style of six-arm Italian chandelier doesn’t become available very often and so I wanted to share it with our blog readers because it is just so pretty!

New Italian Chandelier Gold CrystalsOr for even more glam, Fran could opt for this stunning new Italian Murano cut glass chandelier! The Rococo style 8-arm crystal chandelier is dramatically crafted with gold leaves and gorgeous clear glass pendants and clear glass flowers.

Fran has such good taste that I’m sure that any chandelier she chooses will be the ideal match for the vintage French Rococo chairs and her beautiful dining room.  I imagine she will host many elegant dinners in that lovely space!

Client Spotlight: Vintage French Games Table in Chateau

At the beginning of December we made a delivery of a vintage French games table to a gorgeous house in Georgia that has the look of a French chateau.

French vintage Games table

This is the vintage French games table that Nita and her husband Walter purchased.

The Regency style table set with four chairs was made in France in about 1960 and you can see that the round table has drawers to store your cards and dice. The gold design on the green leather top and the handsome matching tufted chairs make the set look especially debonair, as if it came from a chic casino in Paris or Cannes.

We made the delivery to Nita and Walter in their beautiful home in Augusta, GA. There are so many lovely details to the house, it really resembles a French chateau from the outside.

Chateau house

I couldn’t resist taking a photo of the gorgeous courtyard that one encounters after entering the wrought iron gate:

Lion Fountain Courtyard

The fountain that runs from the lion’s mouth on the brick wall had been turned off as we were starting to have evening temperatures that dropped below freezing.  What a lovely spot to enjoy coffee and croissants, or a bottle of wine at the end of the day!

Vintage Games table in room

We delivered the vintage French games table to a large living area at the rear of the home, off the large kitchen. The floor-to-ceiling fireplace crafted in natural stone is absolutely stunning in person. The vintage games table in mahogany has a beautiful green leather playing surface that pairs superbly with the four green leather upholstered chairs with a Mid-Century Modern look. The green leather is the perfect complement to the olive green in the large Oriental rug.

Vintage French Games table room

The ceilings were so high that I couldn’t quite catch them in the room view, but they are hand-planed wooden planks, framed by massive wooden support beams. The natural light pouring through the windows floods this cozy nook.

I don’t know how to play bridge, but this looks like an ideal spot for fun times spent with family and friends near a warm fire this winter season! Thank you Nita and Walter for letting us see inside your lovely home. We hope that the vintage French games table brings you many years of good fun and good luck!

Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Dining Table

We just delivered a massive vintage Renaissance dining table to Crystal B. in Harlem, Georgia. Crystal found us on Ebay and let us know that she had been searching for the perfect table for her large, open kitchen for the past 4 years! It’s a charming kitchen so let’s take a look at the table and its new home..

1950 Vintage Renaissance Dining TableThis is the large Renaissance style vintage French dining table Crystal bought from our selection of new, vintage and antique dining tables. It was crafted circa 1950 with a beautiful golden parquet top and an ornate wrought iron stretcher that adds to the Renaissance feel.

Parquet top vintage dining tableThis end view might give you a better look at the square parquet design on the table top. You can also see how the darker wood base and legs are carved with traditional rope, leaf, and scroll motifs.

Vintage Renaissance Table in Dining Room

Here’s the vintage Renaissance table in Crystal’s kitchen. We’re glad we were able to help her find the perfect piece to complement her décor! Take a look at the beautiful window treatments, which Crystal made herself — freehand! — and notice how the black, green and mauve fabric ties it all together. And what a gorgeous view this handsome vintage Renaissance table with its massive carved legs will enjoy through the three large, nearly floor-to-ceiling windows! It is hard to tell in the photograph, but in person we could see that the leaves were beginning to show the full range of vibrant autumn colors – reds, yellows and oranges.

Vintage Renaissance Table and iron pot rack

The black wrought iron stretcher under the vintage table ties in with this stunning black wrought iron pot rack over Crystal’s island.  This traditional kitchen is packed with “welcome home” appeal, combining handsome looks with warm comfort. What a lovely spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and perhaps a hearty bowl of oatmeal for breakfast!

Thank you Crystal for giving us a glimpse into your home. We agree that you DID find the perfect table at last and we hope you enjoy it for many years!

Best of February 2015: Vintage Decor and Romance

February is the month of romance, and our client spotlight posts about vintage decor this month were certainly full of romance. February also ended on a romantic note for Greg and me – we took a break away from business with a trip to Hot Springs, North Carolina! Here are highlights from some our of favorite blog posts of the month.

Vintage teaspoon chandelier in kitchenOur customer Marie-Louise in Haute-Normandie, France, bought a vintage teacup and spoon chandelier from us. You can see all the photos Marie-Louise sent us of the chandelier in her gorgeous vintage French kitchen in the story about The Vintage Teacup Chandelier. This is just one of our many upcycled chandeliers, hand-crafted and custom-made for us by an artisan using vintage silver plate spoons. Marie-Louise’s home is dreamily romantic, inside and out!

Vintage French Sheepbone Chairs

Closer to home, Veritta in California sent photos of her dining room featuring the set of six vintage French dining chairs she bought from us. The upholstered oak chairs date to about 1950 and they are carved in the sheepbone style. Veritta told us that she bought the dining table 10 years ago but she has been waiting all this time for just the right chairs. We think it was worth waiting for the perfect love match, don’t you? See for yourself in the Vintage French Sheepbone Chairs story and photos.

California Victoria Inn Parlor RoomAlso in February, I told you about these Four Romantic Victorian Inns around the country so you can plan a romantic getaway any time of year, not just on Valentine’s day.  All the inns are decorated with period Victorian or Victorian style decor, including the one in the photo. This is The Victorian Inn in Ferndale, CA, built in 1890 and convenient for California Redwood Forest. An antique armoire and a red velvet Victorian couch add to the appeal of the inviting Victorian Parlor room.

Gray flower and bird pillowDale Tiffany Peacock Lamp

I often talk about home decor trends in this blog, and one romantic trend that I’ve noticed for 2015 is bird imagery and bird themes on furniture, textiles, ceramics, and home accents. My article called Home Decor Trends: Birds Take Flight shares bird decor inspiration from the charming and rustic to the elegantly sophisticated.

Let me know if there is a topic you would like me to cover in the March blog posts, whether it’s about antique furniture, vintage decor, or home decor trends. Or anything else related to making a beautiful home – we love to hear from you!

Client Spotlight: Vintage French Sheepbone Chairs

We often have wonderful sets of antique and vintage French sheepbone chairs in stock but I don’t recall ever writing a client spotlight about sheepbone chairs. That’s about the change, thanks to Veritta H. in Clovis, CA!  Veritta sent some beautiful photos of her dining room after she purchased a set of six vintage sheepbone chairs from us.

French Vintage Sheepbone chairIf you don’t know the sheepbone chair style, this photo of one of the dining chairs in Veritta’s set shows you what to look for. The sheepbone refers to the shapely legs, also called ‘os de mouton’ in French, which simply translates as bone of the sheep because it looks like a lamb’s leg. The legs are joined by curvy stretchers. The upholstered French dining chairs date to around 1950 and they are crafted in solid oak.

IMG_2503

The six sheepbone chairs look fantastic in Veritta’s dining room!  Veritta says that she built her home 11 years and bought the dining table 10 years ago but she has been waiting for just the right chairs. I’m glad she found them at last! Veritta tracked them down on our OneKingsLane.com shop, but you can also find our many new, vintage, and antique dining chairs on our own EuroLuxHome.com website.

Vintage French Sheepbone Chairs

Veritta says that the sideboard is an antique but the table is antique-inspired. She has done a fantastic job accessorizing her dining room and it looks like she collects wine corks from her favorite bottles! This photo shows the handsome nailhead trim on the vintage sheepbone chairs, which adds another touch of luxury and Old World elegance. The pale upholstery of the chairs highlights the rich wood tones of the table and the old oak chairs.

Vintage French Dining Chairs sheepbone style

Here’s another view of the dining room with a very powerful piece of art on the far wall.
I love that chandelier too – it’s the perfect lighting for the space.

Thanks Veritta for inviting us into your lovely dining room and for giving us the chance to talk about the sheepbone chair style. It is a classic look that works well with all kinds of decor, from traditional French Country to more eclectic design schemes – and it never goes out of style!

Family Games for the Holidays

Jonathan Charles Games TableA couple of weeks ago I got an email from Houzz.com saying “Hi Aimee, Congratulations! You were hand-picked by one of our writers to be featured in an editorial ideabook on the homepage of Houzz.”  That was a great way to start the day! The article is called Games People Play and it featured this Jonathan Charles games table that we stock. We sell the games table on our website, as well as from our EuroLux Houzz.com page. The square games table on a nicely carved barley twist column is crafted in walnut wood with oyster veneer. An inlaid top forms the chess board.

Inspired by that mention on Houzz, I thought it would be fun to write a post on family games for the holidays.  I also want to show you some of the superb games furniture we have in stock. Greg and I love to play trivia at a local sports bar in Columbia, SC. Therese, Greg’s aunt that used to work with us, and her boyfriend, Bill, join us every Tuesday evening. Our team is called The Info Junkies and if I can brag a bit – we win quite frequently!

French vintage Games tableNo, we do NOT play trivia night at this fabulous vintage games table, but I wish we did! The table just arrived from France, and the mahogany and green leather set of Regency style table and four chairs dates to 1960. I can picture the Rat Pack seated around it playing poker. I doubt the Rat Pack was any more competitive than we are on trivia nights though!

Chess set Game GlobeBoth Greg and Bill are fonts of useless knowledge and usually amaze us with the randomness of what they know. Therese and I help out too, but we definitely don’t have the stockpile of trivia that Greg and Bill do. Greg has a particularly deep knowledge of music from the 1970s to 1990s and we can both recite the names of the English Monarchy – in order!

For people who prefer to play a civilized game of chess rather than try to remember the name of every member of The Partridge Family,  this new chess set globe is a winner! It is printed with an antique nautical world map and replica frescoes. The chess board is removable so you can play it outside the globe for an out-of-this-world game! (Groan.)  Ambella Home Shuffleboard

Shuffleboard is such a great holiday game for all the family, and this new Ambella Home shuffleboard table is sure to evoke nostalgia. The Elegant Scroll shuffleboard table is finely crafted with handsome decorative details, so it will fit right in to your traditional decor.

Ambella Home foosball table

The matching new Ambella Home foosball table is bound to be fun too in your games room. The old-fashioned and ornate design is crafted with a fine patina and it looks like a games table out of an old pub.

We love the traditional family games, but we also love the newer games and puzzles too. John is a whiz at Sudoku and crossword puzzles and both Kathy and Greg love to play Bejeweled Blitz on their iPads.

Do you love darts, cards, pool, or charades? Tell us the about family games you enjoy for the holidays!

Best of October 2014: Inspiring Home Decor

We saw some inspiring home decor on the Letters from Eurolux blog this month. Two of my favorite October blog posts were from our series of Client Spotlights, showing furniture customers bought from us in their homes. Let’s start with those as we take a look back at some of our favorite blog posts of the month.

Cathy B. in Canyon Lake, TX, sent us lots of lovely photos of her game room renovation, in the basement of her home on the Guadalupe River. She called the pub-style bar space her  “dream game room basement” and we could see why from the photos!

Bar and Games RoomCathy went above and beyond in her renovation, even moving the outside staircase so it didn’t obstruct the view. Cathy bought a new Ambella Home vanity from us. The rustic look of the marble top and copper farmhouse sink was a perfect match for the basement bar and game room. See all the before and after photos of Cathy’s house inside and out, and her inspiring home decor in the Game Room Renovation post.

Brenda D. in Auburn, AL,  bought this charming carved oak vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard from us for her dining room.

Vintage Louis XV French Country sideboardWe found Brenda’s home decor inspiring not JUST because she bought this fine piece from us! I was interested to hear that Brenda was looking for the ideal piece of furniture to go with her Eddie Bauer dining table. She is one of our many customers with the taste and confidence to blend different styles, mixing new and antique furniture.  (More about that in my blog post: Eclectic Decor: Freedom from Matchy-Matchy Furniture.) As you’ll see from the photos of the vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard in the dining room, Brenda chose well!

Brittany Room Wedmore PlaceWedmore Place country hotel at the Williamsburg Winery in Virginia is not actually our customer, but it could be as they have rooms decorated with the same tapestries that we stock at EuroLuxHome.com. My blog post on the Tapestries at Wedmore Place Hotel tells you about this lovely 300-acre property on a historic site, and shows a few more tapestries too!

Rococo Orange DecorOur other favorite blog post this month showed some sizzling fall-inspired home decor.

Spice Up Your Space with Orange Decor showed how to create a welcoming glow with this warm color.  Ideas range from juicy orange rooms to vibrant accents walls, with hues from zesty tangerine to soft coral and warm pumpkin.

elegant halloween table settingTalking of pumpkins, our post on Elegant Halloween Decor put a focus on black and white as a grown-up way to enjoy the scariest day! No tricks, just lots of treats!

We hope you enjoy our Letters from EuroLux blog and our news and ideas about antique furniture and home decor.

If you’d like us to cover something about antiques or an antiques style or maker, or give ideas about a specific type of home decorating or interior design, let us know. Thanks for reading, and Happy Halloween!

Client Spotlight: Vintage Louis XV French Country Sideboard

Brenda D. in Auburn, AL, found our EuroLux Home page on Houzz and purchased a very pretty vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard. She was looking for the perfect piece to go with her Eddie Bauer dining table and I think she made a great choice!

This is the vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard or server carved in golden oak and dating to about 1950.

Vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard

We chose to bring it over from France because we thought the decorative detail was so delightful. It has a carved foliage and flower motif on the doors and apron. A scallop shell tops the attractive back panel, which could also be used to display plates. The lovely little cabriole legs and ornate hardware add the finishing touches.

Vintage Louis XV sideboard in the dining room

Here is the vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard in Brenda’s dining room. It looks charming beneath the large wall mirror. The shape and style of the mirror frame pair nicely with the carved panel designs on the sideboard. The large chandelier casts a lovely light to set this scene off to perfection. And the sideboard does indeed go with the Eddie Bauer dining table, just as Brenda wished.

Vintage Louis XV dresser

This picture from a little farther back shows the tray ceiling, which I just love! The indented ‘tray’ looks like it is octagonal and the color scheme on the painted ceiling is wonderful. It feels sophisticated, but also cozy and comfortable. The colors conjure up the atmosphere of a restaurant in France. (Not to put any pressure on your cooking, Brenda! I bet you have some great dinner gatherings in this dining room!)

Inside Vintage Louis XV server

The vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard is more than seven feet long so it is as practical as it is pleasing to the eye. The four doors and two drawers provide significant storage space for serving dishes, silverware, napkins, and all the other bits and pieces you want to keep conveniently to hand when entertaining.

If you want to browse around to find a lovely piece like this for yourself, you don’t have to be on Houzz. We have lots of other vintage and antique sideboards and buffets on our EuroLuxHome.com website .

Thanks for sending us the photos of the sideboard in your dining room, Brenda. We’re glad to know that are happy with your choice!

The Vintage Art of Writing Letters

The Love Letter by Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, 1841-1920

The Love Letter by Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, 1841-1920

It may seem old-fashioned to write a proper snail mail letter in these days of text messages, emails, and social media. But it’s that old-fashioned quality – the novelty of it! – that makes it special to receive a real letter. It puts a smile on someone’s face. As Phyllis Theroux said: “To send a letter is a good way to go somewhere without moving anything but your heart.”

We call this blog Letters from EuroLux because it feels like we’re penning a note directly to you, our friends interested in traditional and antique furnishings and lifestyle, home decor, and design. Some people call letter writing a lost art… we prefer to call it a vintage art!

Vintage Art of Writing LettersEven if there’s no specific reason to write to someone, like a thank you letter, you can always write to people you haven’t been in touch with lately, just to tell them your news. Or send a note of appreciation to someone who had an influence on you – a mentor or teacher, perhaps. Or send a letter to a family member or friend, even if you’re frequently in touch. They’re bound to be delighted. It’s a great way to slow down and reflect on what a person means to us, and to tell them things we wouldn’t always say in the rush of an email.

Vintage French Oak Secretary Desk from EuroLuxAntiques.comLetter writing is even more of a pleasure when you have a nice pen, some attractive notepaper, and a beautiful writing desk! We love the customized stationery at Iomoi, in classic designs with a contemporary edge. (Or “tradition with a wink” as they describe it.) We also love this vintage 1950 French Oak Secretary Desk at EuroLuxAntiques.com, with beautiful carving and a fab Fleur de Lis motif. The desk has plenty of drawers, shelves, and a cubby hole to tuck away your writing gear and the letters you’ve received yourself!

Antique French Gothic Desk with Keyboard Tray from EuroLuxAntiques.comThe vintage art of writing letters meets the 21st century! If you prefer to write your letters by computer, rather than by hand, and print them out to sign and mail, the recipient will be just as pleased. This heavily carved antique French Gothic solid oak desk dating to 1850 has been updated with the addition of a pull-out keyboard tray. So you can have the traditional feel of an authentic antique desk (standing over 6 feet high – whew, that’s big enough for all your home office bits and pieces!) and all the benefits of modern communications.
