Client Spotlight: Renaissance Knight Buffet, Mural & Window

Last year I wrote about Bob H. in Prairie Grove, Illinois, who bought a set of ten antique Renaissance chairs from us. We had a wonderful photo tour of his amazing French Renaissance chateau style home, inspired by European castles.

Renaissance Buffet with Lladro figure in our client's home. EuroLuxAntiques.comBob enjoys medieval and Renaissance armor and he also bought a marble-top French Renaissance buffet, carved with a knight on horseback. Bob was so inspired by the knight on horseback carving that he had artists create a mural based on the carving, and then a stained glass window too. Let’s start at the beginning!

This is the antique Renaissance buffet Bob chose. Bob has been a pharmacist for 30 years, so he decorated the walnut wood buffet with a vintage Lladro Spanish porcelain figure of a pharmacist and antique mortars and pestles.

French Renaissance Buffet

Knight carvingThis close-up of the upper part of the buffet shows the Renaissance knight on the center door, riding his horse before the old castle.

This is the image that inspired Bob to have a mural painted by an artist, for an alcove in an upstairs hallway.

The mural came out looking like this…

It’s so fantastic and such a great likeness to the carving! But Bob still wasn’t done. The Renaissance knight was called upon again to serve his lord and master, Sir Bob.  This time, the knight would ride across a stained glass window. To keep you in suspense just a little longer, here’s the commissioned artist at work on the window.

Stained Glass Window Artist

What an incredible job she did. You can see the result in the photo below, as we unveil Bob’s Renaissance knight stained glass window to the world. (You can almost hear the heraldic blare of Renaissance court trumpets, can’t you?)

Renaissance Knight Stained Glass Window

The stained glass window is beautiful and the colors so bright and pure. What a jewel! It’s big too, at six feet tall and 2 feet wide. The window is installed in the foyer above Bob’s front door entry.

Renaissance Glass Window Foyer

The suit of armor in the foyer is a nice early 20th century reproduction, but the rapier sword with the suit is an original from the 17th century. There are so many gorgeous details in this space, let’s take a look from some other angles.

This is the view from the top of the stairs, with that chunky iron chandelier making the perfect accent to the window.

On the left wall of the foyer, a large tapestry or wall hanging adds another authentic touch to the medieval Renaissance style.  I mentioned ten leather-upholstered antique Renaissance chairs dating to 1900 that Bob also bought from us. Here they are in his splendid kitchen paired with a custom table that Bob had made by Amish craftsmen to match the chairs.

Bob is one of our visionary clients who has a great knack for creative décor and we so appreciate him keeping us posted of the knight’s latest journey. What’s next, Sir Bob? A stone-carved knight fountain, perhaps? We can’t wait to hear!

Client Spotlight: Antique Renaissance Buffet in California

antique Renaissance BuffetWhen Natalya S. emailed from Palo Alto, CA, about a very pretty antique Renaissance style buffet she bought from us, it had been quite a while since we’d been in touch. In fact, Natalya bought this antique buffet back in August 2011! So I was thrilled that she took the time to send a wonderful photo of it in her home.

Natalya wrote, “We want to thank you for the nice antique buffet we purchased from you a few years ago and all your help.”

This is the sideboard or hutch. It’s a very high quality French antique Henry II Renaissance style buffet dating to 1900. Elaborately carved in walnut with flourishes and fruit, it has an especially nice grain pattern and patina.

Antique Renaissance Buffet Kitchen Diner

Here is the antique Renaissance style buffet looking fantastic in Natalya’s kitchen! I guess that with her three lively young sons running around, a big sturdy buffet is just what you need in the kitchen. This is one more than 8 feet high and about 5 feet wide, so it provides plenty of storage space as well as looking beautiful.

waterjet inlay marble, onyxThe leafy artwork on the wall above the stove is waterjet inlay made from marble, onyx, and some other stones. “You could probably find someone locally that may do the design that you like,” says Natalya. She suggests a company like this that does inlay marble collections.

The stove itself is a CornuFé 110 from La Cornu and it is so gorgeous I browsed around the La Cornu website. The company is a family business like ours, and it was founded in Paris, France, in 1908. The CornuFé 110 that looks so chic in Natalya’s kitchen is also available in different colors. Here it is in a soft blue in another traditional style kitchen. Isn’t it grand? The hood above Natalya’s stove is made by Vent-A-Hood. Natalya found it in a store after another customer made a special order of appliances with silver trim, but due to an error the appliances were shipped in polished brass. “The store had to sell them half price,” says Natalya. “It was an incredible find for us.”

As regular readers of our antiques and décor blog know, we always love seeing photos of our customers’ homes for our series of Client Spotlights. No matter how many years have gone by, we are always delighted to hear from customers about how our furniture or home accents are fitting into their home and, we hope, enhancing their life. So thank you Natalya for sharing the photo of your beautiful and unique kitchen!

Client Spotlight: Castle in Charleston

I first heard from Brittany through our EuroLux Etsy store. She mentioned she was looking for furniture with lions and I told her she had come to the right place! She and her husband Greg drove over from Charleston, SC, in order to pick out a few pieces for their beautiful brand new home, which looks like it was plucked right out of the Loire Valley in France.

Client's home: A Castle in Charleston

Outfitting your own castle is a big job! Brittany and Greg are just getting started, but they want to take their time and find just the right antique pieces that speak to them.

Mechelen BuffetThe first piece that said, “Bring me home!” was a gorgeous antique Mechelen stained glass buffet with lots of carvings and lion’s heads. The buffet dates to 1900 and it boasts the original red, green and amber stained glass doors with a floral design.

The winged lions on the side supports are exceptionally pretty and the high-quality carvings on both the upper and lower cabinets of this buffet include many regal lions’ heads, some with a brass or gold toned ring, as well as male and female figures and faces.

Its new home is in the dining room just off Brittany’s gorgeous kitchen. The large dining table and chairs haven’t arrived yet, but you can imagine how grand the dinner parties will be! The view from the kitchen and dining room looks out over an inter-coastal marsh – imagine the beautiful sunsets Brittany and Greg will enjoy while dining.

Another handsome piece that whispered to Greg was a monumental Renaissance sideboard with massive lion’s paw feet. This piece will now reside in the formal living room, which is the first thing one sees after entering up the front stairs and through the double, solid-wood castle doors. It’s more than 8 feet long, so it makes quite an impression:

Antique sideboard Eventually Brittany and Greg will find the perfect piece of art or perhaps a gorgeous mirror to go over the French 1880 sideboard. Here’s another view of the antique Mechelen buffet. It looks so splendid against the rich wood floors and that ornate chandelier.

Mechelen antique buffet in castle homeWe love that Brittany and Greg are taking their time and filling their home with just the right pieces rather than buying everything at once. A layered, lived in look is so much more interesting. And in November, Brittany and Greg are expecting little Italia – baby will make three in their castle by the sea! We wish you both a big congratulations and will keep an eye out for more gorgeous pieces for your beautiful home!

Client Spotlight: Antique Buffet at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

Mary Ann H. contacted me to help her find an exceptional and impressive antique buffet for the lobby of the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston, MA. It’s one of the largest evangelical seminaries in North America and a donor had graciously given funds to decorate the lobby.

Antique Buffet Henry II Renaissance styleWe looked at all the antique buffets and sideboards in our gallery, and recommended this gorgeous Henry II Renaissance-style buffet dating to 1900. The French buffet is a stately nine feet tall, carved in walnut with a wonderful, warm patina. The antique buffet boasts elaborately carved details including coats of arms, urns and floral accents on the doors and pediment. Scroll cut railings, fluted posts, and pine cone finials add to the buffet’s majesty. The carved head of a Renaissance courtier smiles down above the glass-front center door. Thanks to its height and substance, the antique buffet stands proud to fill even the largest space. It was the perfect choice for a classic and dignified lobby area!

Antique buffet in seminary lobby

Here is the antique buffet in its new Boston home. It does indeed look stunning filled with bound books and decorated with transferware plates! On the day of the ribbon-cutting ceremony with the generous donor who made the new lobby space possible, Mary Ann wrote to thank us for our help. “As you can see, it adds so much charm and architectural interest to a lobby with little visual interest and no external windows,” said Mary Ann. “We are thrilled with the results!”

We were thrilled too when Mary Ann added: “You find such beautiful items on your forays across France. It was a pleasure working with you and seeing how committed you are to customer service. Thanks again so much for your care and professionalism. I’m sure it is this approach which has won you many loyal customers.”

On the other side of the room, Mary Ann placed a classic Chesterfield sofa with traditional upholstered chairs. She also added an interesting barley twist console table over an Oriental rug with soft, muted colors. The whole interior design of the lobby is elegant and inviting. We are delighted that the more than 100-year-old antique buffet found such a beautiful and inspiring place to spend its next century!

Client Spotlight: Renaissance Chairs and Buffet in Chateau Home, Illinois

Antique French Renaissance Chairs from EuroLuxAntiques.comBob H. in Prairie Grove, Illinois, found us on One Kings Lane. His neighbor (who is a designer) saw our set of ten antique Renaissance chairs with rich buttery leather upholstery. She thought the wonderful aged patina on the leather looked like an old football! She also thought the Renaissance chairs dating to 1900 would be perfect for Bob’s French Renaissance chateau style home, inspired by European castles.

French Renaissance Chairs from EuroLuxAntiques.comBob wanted a table with legs that exactly matched the Renaissance chairs, so he had one custom designed by Amish craftsmen at Valley View Oak. The custom table is solid walnut to match the chairs and Bob had the stretchers under the table matched to the chair stretchers too. The Renaissance chairs and table ensemble does look fantastic in his open kitchen. If you turn around with your back facing the edge of the table, the kitchen opens into the great room.

Antique French Renaissance Buffet from EuroLuxAntiques.comBob is especially fascinated by medieval and Renaissance armor and weaponry and has quite a collection. I know this interest drew him to the beautiful marble-top French Renaissance buffet on our website, carved with a knight on horseback.

Bob’s designer neighbor helped him find the perfect spot in his home for the buffet. It now lives in a large, wide hallway that connects the great room to the entry foyer.

Renaissance Buffet and tapestryA colorful medieval style tapestry hangs on the wall opposite the walnut buffet, adding another authentic touch!

French Renaissance Buffet

Bob decorated the buffet with a vintage Lladro Spanish porcelain figure of a pharmacist as that has been his profession for 30 years. He continued the apothecary theme with antique mortar and pestle sets.

Antique armor in our client's home. EuroLuxAntiques.comThis suit of armor in his entry hallway is a perfect accent to the foyer’s marble floor and curved oak staircase. The suit of armor is an early 20th century reproduction, although the rapier sword with the suit is an original from the 17th century. One expert offered Bob a substantial sum for the rapier sword alone, but Bob decided he wanted to keep it with the armor.

French Renaissance Living RoomBob’s great room, adjoining the open kitchen, has a dramatic baronial feel, with its two-story high windows and stone fireplace and more suits of armor! Bob’s collection also includes 16th century carved bone powder horns that were used to contain gunpowder. “One of these has a knight in a suit of armor with a coat of arms and various swords carved on it,” says Bob. “The other has a knight on a horse hunting a wild boar.”

Bob’s home is truly original and such a thoughtful reflection of his personality and interests. So it’s no surprise that it is featured in Crystal Lake’s 39th Annual Housewalk on September 27, 2013. You can see the exterior of the Hurley Residence in McHenry Country Living’s Housewalk preview. A big thank you to Bob for letting us take our own mini-tour of his fabulous home!

If you enjoy this decor style as much as we do, you can browse in our EuroLuxHome.com online gallery for French Renaissance chairs, buffets, and other furniture currently in our inventory.

UPDATE: Bob later sent us a mural he had created, based on the knight carvings on the antique buffet. See the photo in our Renaissance Mural post!

Client Spotlight: Hilton Head Island, SC

Alan W. enjoys getting away from it all at his vacation home on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. We certainly agree that the view from his dining room overlooking the bay is extremely relaxing – can you hear the gentle waves lapping the shore and the cry of the sea gulls?

Alan was seeking antique dining chairs to go with a large dining table, and we helped him find a Set of 6 Antique French Renaissance Chairs in walnut dating to 1900 that had unique leather seats with embossed dragons on the backs.

Alan also needed additional storage for china and serving pieces in the dining room, so we suggested a massive Vintage French Renaissance Sideboard in oak dating to 1950 with ornate carvings, large twisted legs, and wrought iron decorative supports.

If you’re searching for handsome antique dining chairs, or perhaps an attractive Antique or Vintage Sideboard, let EuroLux Antiques help you find the perfect addition to your home.
