French Country Farmhouse Style: Elegant Comfort

The timeless French Country Farmhouse style of furniture is rich in nostalgia, and it is one of the most popular styles in our EuroLuxHome.com online store. Whether our customers choose genuine antique French Country Farmhouse furniture imported from France or newly crafted pieces inspired by the style, they love the refined but comfortable look!

As the name suggests, there is a rustic element to French Country Farmhouse style that celebrates the natural beauty of rural France. This design style places a great emphasis on traditional craftsmanship, natural materials and a sense of harmony and balance.

Imagine walking into a charming old French farmhouse deep in the hills of a wine region or one surrounded by fields of golden corn. The kind of decor and furnishings you might see are exactly the kind we expect of this design style.

You might see a large wooden table in the kitchen, possibly crafted in pine or another light or medium wood. Simple furniture features graceful lines and a slightly weathered look, or you will see cabinets with a distressed paint finish.

Things are not too matchy matchy, no matched sets of furniture, yet everything works together. The furniture and accessories have the look of being collected over the years, combining family heirlooms with newer pieces.

Everything is effortless, nothing is trying too hard to impress. Nothing is shiny or too crisp and perfect. These homes look lived in and you know that the people living there are very happy and content indeed!

We have a lot of new, vintage and antique French Country Farmhouse pieces in our online EuroLuxHome.com furniture and home accents store and shipping is always free. For example, this fine walnut vintage French Country sideboard hits all the style points!

Vintage French Country Sideboard Chairs with a ladder back are also ideal for this look, and chairs and benches often feature woven rush or rattan seats. These new French Country dining chairs in our store have intricate carvings in the walnut wood and hand-woven rattan seats.

Toile de Jouy is a classic for French Country Farmhouse linens and other soft furnishings.

Rooster Aubusson Throw Pillow HandwovenIn addition to French Country Farmhouse antique furniture and newly crafted pieces, we are pleased to stock all kinds of vintage and new home accessories that look perfect with this style of decor.

Earlier this year I mentioned that Farmhouse style is a leading decor trend right now and I am not surprised! It is more than just a fleeting fashion. There is a timeless, serene and nurturing quality to this interior design look that is comforting in our rapidly changing and stressful times!

Client Spotlight: Antique Armoire Repurposed as Gun Cabinet

We just delivered a beautiful antique French Provincial armoire to our customers Paul and Lane for them to turn into a unique gun cabinet!

Antique French Provincial ArmoirePaul and Lane live just outside of Clemson, SC. and they purchased a gorgeous Louis XV Buffet from us many years ago. So when they were looking for something beautiful and antique in which to store Paul’s gun collection, they decided to take a trip to Newberry and check out what we had in stock. Paul and Lane perused our EuroLuxHome antiques gallery for a bit and told me they were interested in this very beautiful French Provincial armoire.

The armoire is carved in the Normandy style and it dates to 1890. The focal point is a large carved vase of flowers on the top. Among many other carvings covering the cabinet you can see charming bird carvings at the top of the mirrors, pecking at grapes or berries.

Antique GunCabinetThe couple liked the armoire but they didn’t think it would work as a gun cabinet. Au contraire, mon frère! I was quick to pull out photos of a smaller Hunting Bookcase that another customer had converted to a gun cabinet, and that started the creative juices flowing.

Paul does woodworking as a hobby – he even built the large bookcases that line the hall to their master bedroom – so he thought he could tackle this project to convert the armoire.

Lane liked that the mirrored doors would hide the gun collection and also give her a wonderful full-length mirror in the master bedroom – an all-around winning combination!

This is how the antique French Provincial armoire looks in their bedroom. It’s really fabulous and such a decoratively carved piece!

Antique French Provincial Armoire repurposed

While we were delivering the armoire, we were able to snap a photo of the antique Louis XV Buffet from Liege, Belgium, that they bought from us years ago. Now it graces their handsome dining room.

I love the tray ceiling with the noble chandelier. The antique buffet looks perfect in this space. We hope Paul and Lane will visit us again when on the hunt for their next antique treasure!

Farmhouse Style Furniture and Home Decor Trend

I came across a reference to Farmhouse style furniture and decor while I was reading Home Accents Today. The article referenced this piece that talks about top home trends for 2017 according to Pinterest. We love the French Country Farmhouse furniture in our store and we have a good time browsing Pinterest too… just like everyone else who loves home decor! See our antique furniture and home decor Pinterest page here.

The article said that the trend for rustic farmhouse interior styles is up 40% since last year because the look has us “feeling at home the second we walk through the door.”  It’s true, and you can get a glimpse of what they mean with this lovely French Country Farmhouse settee with its blackwash finish and hand-woven rattan seat. Doesn’t this settee just whisper welcome at you, and invite you to come and relax a moment, leaving your worries behind?

French Country SetteeThe comforting Farmhouse style gives a sense of nostalgia for an old-fashioned, simpler way of life before the hustle and busy-ness of today’s modern world.

Jonathan Charles French Country Farmhouse chairsThese painted French Country Farmhouse style dining chairs by Jonathan Charles give an idea of what I’m talking about. Doesn’t this dining room with its ladderback Farmhouse style chairs just make you want to go and kick back over a chatty meal with friends?

The Home Accents Today article mentioned that the huge popularity of Joanna and Chip Gaines on HGTV’s Fixer Upper is also driving so much interest in the Farmhouse style. Let’s take a look at a few more examples from our own clients.

French Country Stool in the kitchen

Stephanie C. in Kernersville, NC. chose a French Country Farmhouse counter stool from our selection, and the look is perfect for her kitchen. Detailed floral wood carvings across the curvy chair rail and seat apron create a stunning decorative effect. The nice cabriole legs are typical of French Country style, and this stool also boasts a hand-woven rattan or rush seat. You can see more about Stephanie’s gorgeous French Country Farmhouse kitchen here.

Jonathan Charles Country Farmhouse Shelves

Talking of kitchens, we think that this charming new Jonathan Charles Country Farmhouse painted shelf unit would be a wonderful addition to a kitchen as a basis for creating a Farmhouse look.  There are so many ways you could decorate those shelves, don’t you think? And what great storage too, including the drawers and pegs to hang mugs, jugs, or towels.

French Country Sideboard blackwashOur customer Eric purchased this handsome new French Country Farmhouse sideboard in blackwash finish, beautifully crafted using traditional joinery techniques. You can see more photos of how it looks in his house and also glimpse his fantastic views from his porch in our French Country Sideboard customer spotlight.

We’d love to see any photos of your Farmhouse decor or tell us what you think about the look in the comments box!

Client Spotlight: French Country Sideboard

Eric S. purchased this beautiful French Country sideboard in black finish, and when we saw his address in the Washington D.C. area, we knew we’d be delivering this one! He only lives about 45 minutes away from my grandmother’s house.

French Country Sideboard blackwashThe antique-inspired French Country sideboard (item BG-65 on our website) is beautifully crafted using traditional joinery techniques. The distressed blackwash finish accents the intricate carving on the raised panels and gives the appearance of age. Detailed hardware creates an authentic French Country look too.

Eric recently moved to the Washington D.C. area and has been busy decorating his lovely home. He proudly gave us a tour of the whole house and said he didn’t mind my snapping photos along the way!

We delivered the new French Country sideboard into the central hall of his home.

The sideboard sits right by the front door and under a gorgeous crystal chandelier. The pretty grey paint creates an elegant impression as you walk in, nicely accented by the design of the rug.
French Country SideboardI couldn’t resist taking a shot showing his grand piano in the muted blue music parlor just off the hallway. The piano finish ties so nicely with the sideboard.

IMG_1131The fantastic view across the back porch is what Eric sees from his home office – I don’t know how he gets anything done with that incredibly relaxing view!

IMG_1133This same view is seen through the floor to ceiling windows at the rear of the kitchen, although my photo is backlit and a little grainy.

IMG_1132

However, my shot of his gorgeous painted white kitchen cabinets with a black finished island and bar stools and black countertops shows how deftly Eric and his wife have used black as a color motif throughout their home. They juxtapose bold, dynamic black with softer grays, blues and greens and crisp, clean white trim.

IMG_1134

I couldn’t resist taking the photo in the dining room as the chandelier had amazing multi-colored crystals in all the colors of the room. I even noticed that the fresh floral arrangement matched the painting above the fireplace!

Every detail is just so nicely considered. I’m sure there will be many happy dinners and gatherings in Eric’s new home in years to come. It is such a welcoming and beautiful space.

Thanks Eric, for giving a glimpse into your traditional-style home with such elegant use of color!

And of course, thanks to Grandma who put us up for the night and took us out for dinner and ice cream to boot! :)

Antique French Furniture in Classic Newberry Mansion

Today I have some photos of antique French furniture and Mechelen buffets that are a real treat to see in our customer Tamra’s classic but eclectic home. The outside of her Greco-Roman mansion in Newberry, SC, is gorgeous too! Outside of Newberry House

You may think the dining room looks a little familiar as this home used to be owned by our good customers, Roger and Peggy. S. They recently sold their elegant 1890s home, built when Newberry was a booming textile mill town at the turn of the century, to a wonderful new caretaker – Tamra!

Antique French Table Chairs dining room

Roger and Peggy left the French Country sideboard in place in the dining room because it fit so well on that wall under the stained glass windows and they didn’t have a spot large enough for it in their new home. Tamra chose a 1930s French Country Louis XV refectory table in walnut which is super-useful as it extends to 9.5 feet long – great for a dinner party! She also bought two sets of Hunting chairs dating to the 1880s in slightly different color oak finishes in order to mix things up.

French Antique Dining Room

Tamra also had her eye on an antique Hunting Buffet for the dining room. The original glass had been damaged on this handsome oak heavily carved Hunting Buffet dating to 1880, so we had replaced it with chicken wire to give a slightly rustic feel to the piece.

Antique French Hunting buffet

It works great in Tamra’s new dining room as there is an interesting juxtaposition of formality with the classic fireplace mantel, moldings, and crystal chandelier and the touch of rustic country with the less formal French Country pieces mixed with the chicken wire in the Hunting buffet.

This close-up of the antique French Hunting buffet shows more detail of the carved oak and the heraldic crest. There’s plenty of space for Tamra to store all the dishes and stemware and silver that she’ll need to feed everyone gathered around the large table!

Tamra also fell in love with another heavily carved Hunting Buffet for the hallway at the base of her stairs. Antique French Carved Hunting Buffet

Tamra has a wonderful eclectic touch and paired antique Chinese arm chairs from her husband’s travels next to the antique French buffet. The flamboyant carvings on the oak buffet portray mythical griffins, oak leaves, fruits, and birds (right down to their feathery details!) The 1880 French buffet boasts its original wavy glass doors.

Antique French Hunting Buffet

As we were delivering Tamra’s furniture, she pointed out that she was still looking for a pair of interesting pieces to go on either side of the huge front door in the front hall. I knew exactly what would fit the bill! I recommended a matched pair of narrow antique Mechelen buffets which still have their original stained glass even though they are a century old.

Antique Mechelen buffet stained glass

This shot of the stained glass shows just how intricate it is, surrounded by oak carvings. The Flemish Mechelen style was a Belgian interpretation of the French Hunting style, so I knew these pieces would work well with the other antique furniture Tamra bought from us.

Antique Mechelen Buffet

Here is one buffet in place. The stained glass catches the light beautifully as it streams through the sidelights on either side of the massive front door.
Pair of antique Mechelen buffetsAnd this is the pair of Mechelen buffets creating a magnificent entrance. The lovely dining room and the whole house is a reflection of Tamra herself – very classy yet down-to-earth and fun! Welcome to Newberry, Tamra – we’re glad you’re here!

Client Spotlight: French Country Jam Cabinet

Melinda H. found us on Ebay and fell in love with our prettily carved small French Country cabinet. When we found out she had a home in Black Mountain, just outside of Asheville, NC, we jumped at the chance to deliver in person. We love that area and we discovered that Melinda’s house is amazing.

French Country Jam CabinetThis is the antique-inspired new French Country Cabinet that Melinda chose. It is crafted in solid oak wood with an antiqued finish.

It’s really a jam cabinet or jelly cabinet of the type that was popular in early 19th century American homes.

The French Country style cabinet (item BG-177 on our site) features detailed carving including a carved basket filled with flowers and tied with ribbon. The scalloped detail and curvy little legs add to the French Country style of the jam cabinet. It’s 39 inches high, so it’s a nice size for many rooms and many purposes.

French Country Jam Cabinet in the Kitchen

The French Country cabinet found its new home at the edge of Melinda’s kitchen, just under the clock. Melinda and her husband Richard have built a very beautiful home with incredible long-range views – it is no wonder they were featured in a magazine!

Breakfast nook with French Country jam cabinet

Here’s a closer look at the French Country jam cabinet on the left. The breakfast nook enjoyed stunning views. It was hard to take good photos with so much light streaming in through the windows, but at least you get an idea. The chandelier is also the perfect accent.

Living AreaMelinda graciously indulged our fascination with home design and showed us around, even showing us the upstairs loft where she and Richard indulge their passion – playing Celtic music together.

View from Loft

What a great view from the loft! The space manages to be both cozy and panoramic.

Custom Stained Glass Window BathroomI absolutely loved the custom-made stained glass panel featured above the large soaking tub in the master bathroom.

Custom stained glass panelThe detail on the stained glass panel is exquisite, and the green colors so vibrant.

Black Mountain PorchWe’re envious of the view that Melinda and Richard’s little dog sees from the back porch. What a lucky dog!

We love the Asheville area, as regular readers know from our stories about antiquing in Asheville. We even have our own booth now at the Antique Tobacco Barn. So it was terrific to have a chance to deliver to Melinda’s house ourselves. Greg and I found Black Mountain so charming that we went back for a few days of vacation. Thanks Melinda for sharing photos of your lovely home – we hope you enjoy the French Country cabinet for many years to come!

Client Spotlight: Vintage Louis XV French Country Sideboard

Brenda D. in Auburn, AL, found our EuroLux Home page on Houzz and purchased a very pretty vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard. She was looking for the perfect piece to go with her Eddie Bauer dining table and I think she made a great choice!

This is the vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard or server carved in golden oak and dating to about 1950.

Vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard

We chose to bring it over from France because we thought the decorative detail was so delightful. It has a carved foliage and flower motif on the doors and apron. A scallop shell tops the attractive back panel, which could also be used to display plates. The lovely little cabriole legs and ornate hardware add the finishing touches.

Vintage Louis XV sideboard in the dining room

Here is the vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard in Brenda’s dining room. It looks charming beneath the large wall mirror. The shape and style of the mirror frame pair nicely with the carved panel designs on the sideboard. The large chandelier casts a lovely light to set this scene off to perfection. And the sideboard does indeed go with the Eddie Bauer dining table, just as Brenda wished.

Vintage Louis XV dresser

This picture from a little farther back shows the tray ceiling, which I just love! The indented ‘tray’ looks like it is octagonal and the color scheme on the painted ceiling is wonderful. It feels sophisticated, but also cozy and comfortable. The colors conjure up the atmosphere of a restaurant in France. (Not to put any pressure on your cooking, Brenda! I bet you have some great dinner gatherings in this dining room!)

Inside Vintage Louis XV server

The vintage Louis XV French Country sideboard is more than seven feet long so it is as practical as it is pleasing to the eye. The four doors and two drawers provide significant storage space for serving dishes, silverware, napkins, and all the other bits and pieces you want to keep conveniently to hand when entertaining.

If you want to browse around to find a lovely piece like this for yourself, you don’t have to be on Houzz. We have lots of other vintage and antique sideboards and buffets on our EuroLuxHome.com website .

Thanks for sending us the photos of the sideboard in your dining room, Brenda. We’re glad to know that are happy with your choice!

Client Spotlight: Dining Room French Country Cabinet

French Country furniture with a black wash finish is a popular choice for kitchens and dining rooms. We have a beautiful range of newly crafted but antique-inspired French Country furniture, and when the piece features a black wash finish it looks really authentic. The black finish gives the appearance of tradition and age, but it still allows the wood grain to shine through.

French Country Cabinet with black wash finishOur client Richard P. in Daniel Island, SC, seems to agree! He bought this new French Country cabinet with a black finish and a marquetry wood top for his dining room. The sideboard, server, or cabinet boasts raised panel doors and a scalloped edge which looks very decorative in a kitchen, dining room or hallway. It stands on French Country style feet and it is charming details like this that really give the winning edge to a nice piece of furniture.

French Country Cabinet detailThe distressed blackwash finish looks wonderful too, making the cabinet appear like a family heirloom… or at least an old friend of the family that has been enjoyed for years!

Richard thought that the classic French Country cabinet would look great in his dining room under a gorgeous abstract painting.

French Country Cabinet in Dining RoomThe black finish on the cabinet works great with the wrought iron light fixture. It pairs beautifully with the wrought iron legs of the dining table too. Richard had the dining table custom-made after he was inspired by marble-top restaurant tables he had seen in France. Joie de vivre!

French Country Cabinet Dining Room 2As you can see, the black wash finish turns the cabinet into a high-impact accent and it is utterly timeless… it’s like the perfect little black dress! The use of black in this dining room doesn’t seem heavy, because the black is lifted by the pale neutral walls and upholstery to a very elegant effect. Similarly, although that lovely marble-top table looks substantial and heavy, the pale marble keeps it fresh and graceful. I like the black trim (or is it dark gray?) surrounding the side chair next to the cabinet too. Little touches like that pull a room together.

It all makes a refined backdrop to showcase the stunning color of the painting.

If you like this look, then also see my recent post about the French Country counter stools in our client Stephanie’s kitchen, also boasting a black wash finish to beautiful effect.
