Romantic Bedroom Decor

Vintage Valentine CardWith Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’m inspired to think about romantic bedroom decor.  Of course, romance is in the eye of the beholder. If you’ve just fallen in love then anywhere is romantic… The same goes if you are as happily married as Greg and I are. We celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary this year and we are just as in love as ever. I am still thinking up a romantic surprise for him for Valentine’s Day. (Shh! Don’t tell him!) However, it’s sometimes a challenge to find a quiet space to snuggle up with your sweetheart when you’ve got 8 cats and dogs eager to come snuggle up with you, like Greg and I do. And you know… I wouldn’t change a thing!

I enjoyed looking at the romantic bedroom decor in these photos, and I hope you get some ideas too.

Romantic Bedroom Decor White ROom This beautiful white bedroom is softly seductive and proves that you don’t have to paint a room pink to create a romantic atmosphere! The gauzy draped chairs and pure light set the tone, and a fabulous vintage chandelier adds a sultry and inviting touch. The feather boa in the cat basket on the floor gives me a chuckle. Our adorably mischievous cat Lenny would have a fine time playing with that!

traditional romantic bedroom decor

By Johns Creek Interior Designers & Decorators Janie K. Hirsch, ASID

In general, romantic bedroom decor tends to rely on pale or pastel tones – sweet lavender, delicate blue, warm peach, and yes, the very feminine pink! Layering different shades of the same color will give more depth and sophistication to the boudoir. Flowing window treatments and gently distressed furniture add to the sense of comfort.

Romantic bedroom decor with toile de jouy

By New York Interior Designers & Decorators Anthony Baratta LLC

A canopy or four-poster bed always sparks up the romance factor. (We have some gorgeous traditional beds in the gallery, including some by Ambella Home and Jonathan Charles.) Toile de Jouy is a classic choice if you want pattern in your wallpaper or bed linens but prefer to avoid florals. It immediately adds a French accent to your romantic bedroom decor. You don’t have to go as all-out toile as the photo above though.  I think it is delightful but if you prefer a lighter touch…

Romantic Bedroom Decor pink toile This French Country bedroom limits the pretty red toile fabric to the bed linens and breezy drapes, with a few matching plates as wall decorations.

Romantic bedroom decor with mural

A fairy-tale lace bed canopy and soft peachy walls provide the allure in this romantic bedroom decor. The curvy lines of the furniture add to the sensuous mood. Notice the lovely mural too. A cute white pup is optional!
Cherub light
Chalkware Guardian Angel
Cherubs and angels add a sweet note to romantic bedroom decor. The Italian cherub chandelier on the left in our gallery is made from an antique wooden cherub serenading you with a lute. The vintage gilded chalkware angel above dates to around 1950 and as it hails from France, it surely knows the language of love!
Jonathan Charles Leather ChairIf you literally want to add hearts to your bedroom, we rather like the range of new Jonathan Charles heart chairs in the gallery. Crafted in walnut and leather, the chairs add a romantic note without being too fussy. I think this green leather chair would look especially wonderful before a dressing table or vanity.

What is your idea of romantic bedroom decor? Is it about the color scheme, the fabrics, or is there some special accent that makes your heart flutter? Do you have a romantic boudoir? We’d love to see photos, or tell us about it in the comments box below.

Client Spotlight: Antique Brittany Furniture for Victorian Restoration

Angela M. recently bought several pieces of antique Brittany furniture from our gallery for the beautiful Victorian house that she is restoring in Galveston, TX.  The 1890 Victorian was almost completely gutted by fire about two decades ago. Here is the photo Angela sent us of the outside of the house as it looked nearly 120 years ago in the year 1894.

Our client's Victorian restoration home as looked in 1894

And below is a photo of the house “under new management” last year. Isn’t it gorgeous?

Front closeup

Angela says that the house is known for the lovely detailing around the porch of mariner’s wheels.  The white paint on the porch really makes those wheels stand out! Antique Brittany furniture is a perfect choice for the interior. The Brittany style often features maritime details such as ship’s wheels in tribute to coastal Brittany’s sea-faring history.

Brittany armoire 14-2A-1This is one of the pieces of antique Brittany furniture Angela chose for the house. It’s a display cabinet or bookcase dating to 1880, carved in chestnut with a beveled glass door. You can see the large ship’s wheel at the top of the French cabinet, tying in with the maritime theme of the house porch. The two galleries of spindles along the top and bottom of the bookcase are typical of Brittany style furniture. So are the hand-carved rosettes adorning the bottom drawer.
Antique Brittany Table KC-33A-1Angela also picked this Brittany style chestnut dining table dating to 1880. It’s a real stunner and the French craftsmanship is superb. Each leg boasts a carved figurine of a man or a woman wearing period regional costume. Carved figures of French country folk like these often decorate antique Brittany furniture. They are one of the most delightful characteristics of the style. The central stretcher beneath the table once again features a carved ship’s wheel.

Antique Brittany chairs KC-33B-1To match the table, Angela chose this splendid set of six Brittany dining chairs. Crafted in France in around 1880, the chestnut chairs are carved with an arched gallery of spindles on the crest rail. Each chair back features a carving of a French man or woman in happy pastoral scenes. Some of them are playing bagpipes. If you’re wondering why French country folk are playing bagpipes – an instrument that normally makes us think of Scotland – here’s the reason. Brittany is historically a Celtic nation, like Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Similar Celtic traditions and symbols appear in all those regions as they had such close cultural ties. Hence the bagpipes, which are often portrayed on antique Brittany furniture.

Due to Angela’s arthritis, she is having much of the Victorian restoration work done for her. We all know these things take time! But we hope she sends us photos of the antique Brittany furniture in place once the house is further along. Angela says “I should have waited a while to buy furniture, but I love the Brittany style and just couldn’t resist!”

We’re glad she gave in to temptation. She chose some exceptional furniture that will blend perfectly into the stately Victorian house and stay true to the exterior’s maritime theme.

Best of September 2013: Antique Dining Rooms & Elvis Fest

We covered an eclectic mix of subjects in our September blog posts, including spotlights on antique dining room furniture in two clients’ homes, a tutorial on how to mend broken ceramics, and a fun celebration of Elvis Presley. I guess that is fitting for the harvest season, as we gather in all the fruits and veggies and enjoy an abundant and diverse feast!

We certainly took inspiration from the wide range of creative options in our item on decorative stair ideas. Check out the photos in the post and tell us what you think! Let’s revisit some of our other most popular September posts.

Antique dining room furniture in our client's homeIt’s always great to see photos of our customers’ homes, featuring antique furniture and other home decor accents they’ve bought from us. Our client spotlights are a great source of home design ideas and beautiful ways to blend antiques into decor. This month we got a glimpse of Susan’s gorgeous red dining room, featuring 12 Renaissance dining room chairs she found in our gallery. Susan reupholstered some of the chairs and she also bought a vintage chandelier to hang over the dining room table. The red ceramic Hubert Bequet chandelier is the perfect finishing touch and it proves that a relatively simple decor accent can really pull the whole look of the room together!

Antique dining room furniture in our client's Victorian houseContinuing the antique dining rooms theme, we looked at the Victorian dining room of our client Sal S. in New York. Sal is a busy entrepreneur and he is restoring a Victorian house with the help of an interior designer. The designer suggested Sal check out our online antiques store. Sal went one better, and drove all the way to South Carolina to visit our gallery in person. Thank goodness the shopping trip proved successful! Sal added an antique French Renaissance Buffet, ten upholstered Hunting chairs, and a Renaissance style server or sideboard to his Victorian home.
ceramic-restoration-tipsFrom a Victorian restoration to ceramic restoration… In our blog post on How to Fix a Broken Ceramic, Kathy gave a video tutorial, using a broken ceramic figurine as an example. The figurine, a.k.a. Prudence, belongs to a friend of ours and poor Prudence had a broken arm. Kathy did her magic and repaired Prudence, sharing her ceramic-fixing tips in a short video as she worked. Those tips are also written up in the post if you prefer to read them.

Ready for the South Carolina Elvis FestivalWe enjoyed a celebration of Elvis Presley this month, as Greg and I recently visited Tupelo, MS, for a furniture show and stopped in to see Elvis Presley’s birthplace. You can see our photos of Elvis’ childhood home in the post. Whilst there, I bought these awesome Elvis jumpsuit pajamas in the gift shop. So when the South Carolina Elvis Festival came to our town of Newberry a few weeks later, I already had the perfect outfit to celebrate Elvis The King!

Thanks for sharing September with me. We’ve got lots more to say about home decor, antique furniture, and living it up, vintage style! Sign up here to receive our blog posts, and you can follow us on Facebook too!

Client Spotlight: Red Renaissance Dining Room

We recently mentioned that our client Susan D. in Metamora, IL, bought a set of twelve dining chairs from us for her Renaissance dining room. In that Antique Chair Upholstery Makeover post, we said we sometimes find vintage or antique chairs with a beautiful frame but the upholstery is worn. These chairs provide a great opportunity to our customers to update the upholstery to suit their own décor and taste. Or they can just reupholster the antique chairs in the original style to give the chairs a new lease on life.

Renaissance dining room chair

Antique Renaissance Dining ChairThis is exactly what Susan did so beautifully with the Renaissance dining room chairs dating to 1900. Seven of the twelve chairs needed new upholstery. As you can see, Susan did a great job and she also bought a vintage chandelier from us. Now she has sent us more photos of her handsome red Renaissance dining room with the chandelier hung and all the finishing touches in place. What a feast for the eyes!

Renaissance Dining Room in our client's homeThe Belgian oak chairs feature regal lion carvings and metal handles and they look terrific around her dining room table. The formal Renaissance dining room looks welcoming and opulent. It’s a wonderful example of décor that evokes the spirit of the original Renaissance Revival style, popular more than a century ago. European nobility and wealthy families loved the classic Renaissance aesthetic that first flourished in 15th century Italy. So they filled their homes with impressive and heavily-carved furniture crafted in that style. That’s how these fine chairs came into creation!

Vintage Hubert Bequet ChandelierThe vintagBequet Chandelier Glass Beadse Hubert Bequet chandelier Susan chose from our collection of vintage lighting suspends over the dining table. Also from Belgium, the 1950 burgundy chandelier fits perfectly with the Renaissance dining room décor. At two feet high and two feet wide, the scale is just right for the dining table. The Bequet chandelier has a sculptural ceramic body and the wine red color, painted with a floral design, looks warm and rich in the red dining room. Each ceramic candle cup on the eight metal arms is adorned with glass beads for a jewel-like effect. Lavish and lovely!

Renaissance Dining Room in our client's homeSusan has decorated her sideboard with a tapestry style runner that enhances the authentic air of the Renaissance dining room. The wine rack, candelabra, pitcher, and punch bowl add more touches of antiquity to the room décor. They are also practical when Susan is entertaining.

Red is a classic choice for dining room décor as it stimulates the appetite and conversation.  Renaissance dining room furniture always inspires a mood of gracious hospitality. By combining the two, Susan has created an inviting room that we are sure will be the venue for many elegant meals.

If you’re tempted by this splendid Renaissance dining room, give in to temptation and browse the selection of antique Renaissance style furniture in our gallery!

Client Spotlight: Victorian Restoration Dining Room

We know many of our clients are working on Victorian restorations and it’s wonderful to see how they bring their homes back to their original style and beauty. Here’s a case in point.

Our client Sal S. in New York is restoring a beautiful Victorian home that had been neglected through the years. He’s returning her to her former glory and doing a terrific job of it. Sal knows his own tastes but he is working with an interior designer to help tie it all together. He is a busy entrepreneur so he needs some help to get all the work done that goes into a tackling a Victorian restoration.

Sal’s designer found our EuroLuxAntiques.com website and sent him down to check out our gallery. He actually took a road trip from New York with his mother to come visit us in person in Newberry, South Carolina. He couldn’t make a decision between all of the Renaissance buffets we had in stock!

Antique Renaissance Buffet for our client's Victorian Restoration DIning Room

He ended up picking out a wonderful antique Renaissance Buffet in walnut wood. The antique French buffet is heavily carved with an acorn motif symbolizing strength, power, and endurance. How fitting! Anyone involved with a Victorian restoration needs endurance, and any entrepreneur like Sal is bound to be gifted with the qualities of strength and power! The buffet dates to 1900 and it is 9 feet tall with an ornate pediment, crown molding, and lovely brass handles on the two drawers.

10 Hunting Chairs for our client's Victorian Restoration dining room

Sal also selected this set of 10 beautifully upholstered Hunting chairs. The antique French chairs date to 1880 with fantastic carvings of leaves and grapes. Carved in oak with chunky barley twists, they are pretty heavy. Each chair weighs nearly 17 pounds! The physical weight is nicely balanced though by the visual lightness in the pierced splat. The floral tapestry upholstery works well with the French Hunting style frame and also fits nicely with the style of Sal’s Victorian restoration dining room.

Antique server or sideboard for our client's Victorian Restoration house

Sal finished his antiques shopping trip by choosing this gorgeous Renaissance style server in walnut with handsome grey-green marble. The 1900 French server or sideboard features rich carvings of leaves, crests, and rope, as well as turned spindles. The plate rail sits above the 4-foot-long veined marble top.

SalStrazzaeri Here’s how the buffet and chairs look in Sal’s Victorian restoration dining room. It isn’t spectacular? I love the decorated ceiling, and how about those elegant drapes? The aged patina of the walnut and oak looks wonderful against the pale green wallpapers. It all fits delightfully into the Victorian style. Obviously Sal took as much care in choosing the decor accents as he did in selecting the furniture from us. All of the wallpaper and curtains are new and I believe that is an antique chandelier hanging above the table.

The only thing this Victorian restoration dining room needs now is a dinner party to celebrate its return to its original grace and style. I suspect Sal might have taken care of that already!

Client Spotlight: Antique Chair Upholstery Makeover in Illinois

We often find vintage or antique chairs on our buying trips that are perfectly gorgeous, but the upholstered seat is showing its age! The seat caning needs to be fixed or the upholstery needs to be replaced. If the chair frame is beautiful quality and in good shape, then we go ahead and buy the chair anyway. We know someone will love to get their hands on it as we often work with customers and interior designers who just know their own taste. They look past the old upholstery or broken caning, and can see that an upholstery makeover will give the antique chair frames a whole new life.

Antique Chair with Lion Carvings and HandlesHere’s a case in point! Our client Susan D. in Metamora, IL purchased a set of twelve Renaissance style chairs from us. The Belgian chairs date to 1900 and feature regal lion carvings and metal handles. The sturdy oak frames were in superb condition, but seven of the twelve chairs needed to be reupholstered. As you can see from the photos, they turned out wonderfully! Susan did a terrific job in having these dining chairs reupholstered to suit her taste. The rich red looks gloriously opulent against the dark oak wood.

By the way, the color red is often recommended for dining rooms, as it is meant to stimulate the appetite – as well as conversation! (For more red inspirations, see our spotlight on Julie and Bruce in Whitmire, SC, who enjoy decorating with red including in the dining room.)

Vintage Hubert Bequet Chandelier. EuroLuxAntiques.comSusan just purchased this lovely vintage chandelier to hang over the dining table and match the red in the chairs. The Belgian chandelier by Hubert Bequet dates to 1950 and I think we can all see that the deep burgundy red of the ceramic body will look fabulous in Susan’s dining room!

Although most of the antique chairs at EuroLuxAntiques.com are in good shape on the upholstery and caning, we almost always have a few that would welcome some TLC. It’s just a fact of life that upholstery wears out when you’re dealing with very old, original antique chairs. But they offer great value for money and give you the chance to add your own style stamp. You can upholster all the chairs the same way, or get creative and design smaller sets: Two sets of six or three sets of four.

If you don’t want to find a specialist to reupholster your chairs, this HGTV DIY tutorial shows How to Re-Cover a Dining Room Chair and Better Homes and Gardens has a Chair Upholstery Step-By-Step Guide.

Best of April 2013: Antique Furniture at Home, Color Accents & More

In our April blog posts, we enjoyed seeing the many beautiful ways our clients use and display antique furniture they’ve found at EuroLuxAntiques.com. We also took design inspiration from clever accent colors, the humble bowl, and London hotels. Let’s revisit some of our favorite April posts.

Antique French Hunting Chairs & Thrones, vintage Spanish Renaissance table, Art Deco buffet from EuroLuxAntiques.comWe loved how Robert and Liz feature antique furniture in their decor throughout their lovely house in Johnson City, Tennessee. We especially loved seeing the antique French Hunting chairs, Art Deco buffet and Spanish Renaissance table they’d purchased from us. The fine antique furniture looks so very happily at home in their dining room!

EuroLuxAntiques Vintage Clock-001Interior designer Paul Corrie of Paul Corrie Interiors made splendid use of this gorgeous vintage Louis XV Rococo style shelf clock. He featured it in his striking design for the entry and lobby spaces of The Dresden in Washington, DC.

The Dresden is one of the fanciest condominium addresses in the capital. As you can see from the room photos in the vintage clock article, this 1950s Hermle beauty fits right in!

The London Ritz Hotel interiors are designed with a Louis XVI theme, and it's opulence all the way!We took a quick trip around some Historic Hotels of London to discover why these hotels are so legendary. It all becomes clear when you see the fantastic old buildings decorated with gorgeous vintage or reproduction antique furniture. I also shared some tidbits about the famous people who’ve stayed at these hotels.

TiffanyGlassBowl2We were bowled over to hear about the antique bowl that sold for more than $2.2 million in a New York auction. The family selling the bowl had displayed it in their living room. They had no idea of the true value! This inspired my post about pretty and practical ways to use bowls in your decor.

In another post, we looked at how to enhance your neutral decor with a pop of vintage color.

As I call this blog ‘Letters from EuroLux,’ I also explored the Vintage Art of Writing Letters. Old-fashioned? Moi? Well, we sell most of our fine antique furniture via our EuroLuxAntiques.com website, and I live on email, talking with customers and answering their questions. But it does us all good to slow down sometimes! A personal letter is sure to put a smile on someone’s face.

Don’t worry, I won’t return to snail mail to answer your questions. We pride ourselves on our prompt customer service!

Thanks for sharing April with me. We’ve got lots more to say in May about home decor, antique furniture, and living it up, vintage style!

Client Spotlight: Johnson City, TN

Antique French furniture in the Hunting style is one of our specialties here at EuroLuxAntiques.com. So when a customer buys several antique French Hunting chairs and thrones – plus an Art Deco buffet and a Spanish Renaissance table – it’s lovely to see how they incorporate these treasures into their home. When we made a personal delivery to Robert and Liz in Johnson City, Tennessee, we had the chance to do just that!

Client Spotlight: Johnson City TN by EuroLuxAntiques.comRobert and Liz live in a wonderful historic home in Johnson City that was on the city’s tour of homes last year. They have quite a few antiques in their home, but it’s a beautiful house from the outside too. I could relax on that shady veranda all day!
Antique French Hunting Chairs & Thrones, vintage Spanish Renaissance table, Art Deco buffet from EuroLuxAntiques.com
They purchased from us a 1950s Spanish Renaissance table in oak, a set of six oak antique French Hunting chairs (circa. 1890) and a pair of French Hunting Thrones, also in oak, dating to 1880. The whole dining room looks magnificent. Robert and Liz also bought a pretty 1920s German Art Deco buffet.

French Hunting thrones at the head of the table - what a great dining room! EuroLuxAntiques.comHere’s another photo of one of the larger French Hunting thrones. The two thrones are placed at the head of the table to seat the host and hostess, or perhaps the thrones are reserved for the guests of honor?

The smaller antique French Hunting chairs line the sides of the table. This shot really shows the amazing carving on the stately thrones, complete with barley twists.

Art Deco buffet completes the dining room from EuroLuxAntiques.comThe 1920s German Art Deco buffet is also crafted from oak. As you can see, there is plenty of space to store all their china, silver, and table linens for when guests come to dine. I love how well the Art Deco buffet blends with the older antique French Hunting style furniture.

A piano is a finishing touch to the traditional decor in this very comfortable and welcoming home. I can just picture everyone gathering around the piano for some after-dinner entertainment, or even a traditional sing-along.

Vintage Chevrolet - red for maximum va-va-voom! EuroLuxAntiques.comRobert and Liz also have an awesome old early 1950s Chevrolet parked out back that we greatly admired! They were such very nice folks and we enjoyed spending time chatting with them.

We mostly use professional companies that specialize in moving antique furniture to deliver EuroLux Antiques purchases to our customers, but sometimes Greg and I take time out of the gallery to hit the road and deliver antiques ourselves. I’m so glad we did this one personally. It was wonderful to meet Robert and Liz and to see their delightful home!

Client Spotlight: Fine French Antiques in Peoria, IL

I always love it when our customers take the time to photograph their purchases to show us how they’re using them. And I especially love it when they include pictures of their sweet furbabies!

About a year ago, Isabelle J., who is herself from France but now resides in Peoria, Illinois, bought a set of six antique Louis XVI dining chairs to match her existing antique French dining table. Doesn’t this set look beautiful?

011513_antique_diing_set_window_euroluxantiques

You can tell Isabelle has taken great care to build her French antique interior decor by selectively adding pieces over the years. Note the beautiful antique server, at top-left in the photo, and the brass candelabra. Stunning! You can also see Isabelle’s adorable pooch, the aptly named “Angel” (who speaks fluent French, by the way!).

Here’s another view of the solid walnut chairs paired with Isabelle’s gorgeous trestle table.

In the background, you’ll see an antique buffet. I love the way Isabelle showcases her collection of light-colored china on the shelves. The contrast between the warm wood tone and the creamy china really draws the eye to the plates. And that Art Deco sculpture is sensational. Although Isabelle didn’t purchase that sculpture from us, we do carry similar ones.

As we corresponded, Isabelle wanted to make the point that these chairs are very comfortable. She said, “We have found the chairs beautiful and comfortable, and this is very important for American people, who think the French stay too long at the table.” I can only smile at that! Stay too long, lingering over dinner with friends? Impossible!

Just look at the gorgeous patina on that table top! I can practically feel the table’s history. And the chair set works so well with the antique trestle table. Note how great the Art Deco clock looks on the wall. Although from a slightly different period (probably the 1930s, while the chairs and table date to 1920 or earlier), the antique regulator clock looks right at home in this setting. It just goes to show how easy it is to blend eras as long as you take care to match color or some other element within the overall design. It’s worth noting the tapestry hanging on the wall at left is a reproduction similar to those we carry. That particular tapestry is based on an 18th century inlaid panel on a cabinet that belonged to George IV and hung in his Carlton Palace. The original panel now resides in Buckingham Palace.

Lastly, here is chère Angel:

On that adorable note, we’ll bid you adieu!

I thank Isabelle for sending us such wonderful photos and allowing us to showcase her beautiful home on this blog. Please send me your decorating photos so I can share them, as well! I love seeing the many ways people live with antique furnishings.
