Client Spotlight: Woodbridge Table for Knight Kiplinger

This client spotlight about our Woodbridge Marseille console table is pretty neat – this is Knight Kiplinger’s home!

Knight Kiplinger is the celebrated economic journalist who heads the Kiplinger financial media company including Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and Kiplinger.com. He is also a book author and you have probably seen or heard him as a guest on many TV and radio shows like the Today Show, Charlie Rose, Diane Rehm Show, and CBS This Morning.

Woodbridge Neoclassical console tableThis is his second order with us. We guess he knows how to handle his money and make the most of every dime, so we are very happy that he decided to spend some of his hard-earned dollars with us!

His last order was for this lovely mahogany Neoclassical Woodbridge console table shown at left, our item number WB-199, for his home in Washington DC.

Woodbridge Marseille Console tableThis time he contacted me to order the elegant Marseilles console table (item WB-612, shown right) for his second home in Maryland. The console table is beautifully hand-waxed and designed with traditional French style. Made in solid wood with a rich cherry veneer, the console table features chic curving sides. The two drawers are crafted with a dovetail construction, and the console table is hand-rubbed and distressed to create an authentic-looking aged patina.  Here is a photo of the table in Knight Kiplinger’s home.

Marseille console table

Knight Kiplinger said, “It took me this long to get around to hanging some art over it, on an 11-ft wall in the upstairs hall of our 1830 Maryland home. Lovely setting, and the table is just what we needed for displaying books and objets d’art.”   I love the look of his gallery of art above the table, and the sculptures look perfect on the lower shelf.

Marseille console table hallway

This photo gives a better view of the table’s beautiful curved silhouette, and also gives you another chance to admire the statues! Mr Kiplinger asked, “You wouldn’t have, might you, an identical table, but shorter?” So now we have been working on finding him a third table! Stay tuned… we hope to bring you another perfect match.

Thank you to Knight Kiplinger for so kindly giving us a brief glimpse into his home. What can we say? We love his taste in console tables!

If you are a frequent reader of our antiques and home decor blog, you will remember that this Woodbridge Marseille console table also looked beautiful in the hallway of our customer Liz in San Francisco.

Houzz Furniture and Home Decor Favorites

We have been selling on Houzz.com for less than two years but we’ve already found an enthusiastic following of home decor lovers who are quick to snap up our antiques imported from France, as well as our high-quality and hand-crafted antique-inspired furniture. We already won several home decor honors from Houzz including a Best of Houzz award for our customer satisfaction and service.

So I thought that for today’s blog post I’d share with you three of the most popular items we’ve been selling recently on Houzz. It’s a good way to take the temperature of the kind of things that Houzz folk are interested in right now in terms of home decor.

Leather Sofas and settees and leather chairs are very popular with the style-wise Houzzers, probably because leather upholstery looks good with any style of decor and stands up to tough punishment in daily wear. For example, this elegant but comfortable new Madison leather accent chair, superbly crafted with a solid wood frame featuring hand-applied nailhead trim. The weathered brown leather gives a classic aged effect. All you need is a good book or the remote control and a glass of wine and you are settled in for the evening!

Aubusson hand-embroidered throw pillow

Our new Aubusson hand-crafted throw pillows are also being snapped up left and right. We have many different designs in our wide selection of Aubusson throw pillows but they all of exceptionally high quality and craftsmanship. This 20″ x 20″ hand-embroidered throw pillow in traditional Aubusson style is a good example. The large embroidered flowers are perfect for a French Country living room or bedroom, and the pretty design is set off by a luxurious frame of green and bronze tassels. A zippered velvet fabric and a down and feather insert add to the comfort! A set of handsome throw pillows always adds a wonderful decorative touch to a room and the design of the pillows can really help pull together a color scheme.

Woodbridge Marseille console table

Design savvy Houzz fans are also buying a lot of console tables from us.  A console table is so versatile and it can be used in many different ways in every room of the house. It can be a convenient storage table in a narrow hallway, a beautiful display table placed against the wall in a living room, or it can be placed as a visual divider between different areas of a room. One of our most popular console tables is this gorgeous solid wood Woodbridge Marseille console table with a hand-waxed cherry veneer.

I think that a good leather chair or sofa, attractive throw pillows and an eye-catching console table are all practical and beautiful investments in any home. Apparently the Houzz community agrees! What do you think?

Stunning Home Decor from Scarborough House and Cyan Design

We are thrilled to be starting the new year with two new furniture collections in our furniture and home accents online store. Each collection is stunning in its own way. The first furniture maker is Scarborough House which creates beautiful antique-inspired furniture. The high-quality pieces are hand-crafted using using age-old techniques.

Scarborough House Demilune tableThis Scarborough House demilune table is a fine example.  Scarborough House is acclaimed for its veneers using the finest crotch mahogany and burls that remain beautiful for years to come. They also make their own brass hardware to create a perfect match for the piece. Combined with their rich finishes on the wood, this attention to detail and great craftsmanship all adds up to heirloom quality furniture.

Scarborough House Rosewood Card TableThis charming rosewood and crotch mahogany flip-top card table looks like it should be in a Jane Austen novel with its decorative brass accents! The satinwood chest of drawers below is another impressive example of Scarborough House style.

Satinwood Chest of DrawersAs you might guess by the company’s name, it was founded by an Englishman who was a fine furniture designer and maker. You probably remember the song: “Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.” The old English ballad refers to a gathering held in the coastal town of Scarborough in the north of England. It was a popular attraction in Medieval times when it took place for more than a month each summer.

You can browse all our Scarborough House fine furniture at this link.

We also started stocking a large collection of lighting and home accents by Cyan Design. They approached us to look at their collection. How could we resist when they create such spectacular pieces, like these amazing Murano style purple Bella Vetro glass chandeliers featured in Elle Decor magazine?

Cyan Designs Bella Vetro ChandelierCyan Design has a very unusual style that (as you can see) is different to Scarborough House but equally stunning. Their pieces are also great value, with surprisingly low price points for their small sculptures, candlesticks and art glass pieces.

Cyan Design Skyros Pendant Chandelier Gold LeafThis is another glamorous light fixture. The gold leaf Skyros chandelier pendant manages to be both classic and contemporary at once, with a traditional chandelier inside a chic globe made of a meshed quatrefoil design.

Cyan Design Ribbon Console Table2Although this Cyan Design ribbon console table looks streamlined and edgy in one way, I can totally see in a French Rococo living room, hallway or bedroom beside your antique French furniture! The black granite top and gold legs give it a classic note and the swirly lines are very ooh-la-la!

I could browse Cyan Design furniture and home accents all day. I hope you enjoy exploring these exceptional pieces too!

Client Spotlight: Jonathan Charles Buckingham Console Table

Linda K. sent some photos of her new living room in Wayne, PA, featuring the beautiful new Jonathan Charles console table that she bought from us.
Jonathan Charles console table Buckingham
The mahogany console table from the Jonathan Charles Buckingham collection is crafted in Late Regency style with an antiqued finish. The elegant wood detailing, ornate drawer handles, and fluted and tapered legs capture the Regency style perfectly.
Jonathan Charles Console Table BuckinghamHere’s the Buckingham console table in its new home. Linda has been doing a lot of work on the room although she ruefully added that her new living room project was going very slowly. Linda, tell us about it! We’ve been working on our 1920s vintage bungalow renovation for several years and we know how long these things take.

We think the room looks great already, with those gorgeous floors and the striking piece of art creating a focal point over the console table. It also looks like the windows are huge! Lots of lovely light in that room!
Jonathan Charles Buckingham Console Table
Linda says, ” The living room is starting to come together but we still need a rug, sconces on the wall, ficus trees in the corners with lighting, new window treatments AND the new beautiful couches came in the wrong fabric!” Linda order her new couches from a high-end chain and the sofas came in a light green or sea foam color.

“They were supposed to be much darker in color with a more olive green background, along with some beiges and browns,” Linda said. She was waiting for the chain to put the new order in so she could get the new couches in June sometime. I hope they’ve arrived with you by now, Linda!

In any case, Linda is very philosophical about it all. I guess we have to be sometimes, or we’d go crazy. Linda said, “At any rate, it’s small problems – just been a headache. Glad our console table was a breeze!”

We enjoyed dealing with Linda too. She found us on Bonanza.com and was very pleasant to work with. Here is a link to our Bonanza store.  Of course, you can also find this Jonathan Charles console table and all our fine antique French furniture and antique-inspired new furniture and lighting on our EuroLuxHome.com website too.

Client Spotlight: Antique Chinese Altar Table

Our customer Richard S. in Ft. Myers, FL, bought an antique Chinese altar table from us last year and boy, does it look great in the hallway of his home!

Antique Chinese altar table

This is the antique Chinese altar table from Shanxi Province, China. It dates to the year 1900 and it is carved in elm with a scrolling cloud design on the apron. The symbolic scrolling cloud motif is probably the most typically carved decorative accent in antique Chinese furniture. The pretty carved flourish is intended to convey good fortune.

Antique Chinese altar table in hall

Richard used the antique altar table as a console table in his Florida home. I think it looks fantastic. The ceramics on top of the table and below it also have an Asian feel. Hmm, that carved wood chair just sliding shyly into the right of the photo also looks interesting. I’ll have to ask Richard about that next time he is in touch with us!

Antique chinese altar table

This shows more detail of the Late Qing Dynasty altar table and how nicely Richard accessorized it. The elm wood looks gorgeous against the marbled floor. Elm is one of the most frequently seen woods in antique Chinese furniture. It was popular due to the attractive grain and because it is very adaptable. It works beautifully for so many purposes. Elm was also valued because it is resistant to decay. That’s why we’re still enjoying this baby more than a century after it was made!

Antique Chinese altar table

This side view shows the slenderness of the antique altar table, which makes it a perfectly elegant fit for the narrow hallway. I’m also admiring the floor rug and the dining area beyond! The altar table is typical of antique Chinese furniture from the Late Qing Dynasty era when the growing merchant class starting having more money to splurge on fine furniture. They liked hand-carved decorative pieces to show off their status and wealth. They also loved the symbolic blessing of the carvings, like the scrolling cloud design on this table.

I’ve written other posts about Chinese symbols on antique furniture if you want to learn more about the meanings of these decorative carvings. Thanks Richard for taking us inside your home. We hope the scrolling clouds on the antique Chinese altar table truly do bring you good fortune!

Best of August 2013: Antique Inspirations

We explored vintage and antique inspirations in our August blog posts, from groovy vintage clothing to antique spinning wheels. Every day is full of antique inspirations here at the EuroLuxAntiques.com gallery of course, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Whether I’m unpacking a new container of hand-picked treasures from Europe or chatting with clients on the phone about how a piece of antique furniture would fit in their home decor, I reckon I’ve got the best job on the planet. It’s even better when clients send us photos showing their purchases in their new homes! Let’s revisit some of our most popular August posts.

Antique inspirations in our client's French Renaissance kitchen. Chairs from EuroLuxAntiques.comBob H. sent us a bunch of photos of his amazing chateau style home in Prairie Grove, Illinois, complete with suits of armor! Bob bought a set of ten Renaissance chairs dating to 1900 from us and also a Renaissance buffet server. The chairs were upholstered in leather and carved in walnut, and Bob had a dining table custom-made to match the chairs, right down to the details on the antique chair stretchers. His medieval and Renaissance themed decor is full of antique inspirations and it’s not surprising that his beautifully designed home stars on an annual housewalk. Our Renaissance style furniture client spotlight on Bob’s home will show you why!

Antique inspirations in this reproduction Console Table from EuroLuxAntiques.com, in our client's hallwayIn my spotlight on console tables, I shared my tips on how to choose and use a console table. This was inspired by our client Elizabeth in San Francisco, CA, who was faced with a tricky choice of which console table to choose from our gallery. She has a long, narrow hallway and she couldn’t decide between three equally lovely tables. Which would look best in the space? Elizabeth finally opted for this high-quality reproduction console table in an antique French style, as you can see in the photo. The streamlined silhouette on the hand-waxed and distressed table looks perfect in Elizabeth’s hallway, in my opinion!

Sell antiques at auctionWe receive very many emails from people asking how to sell their antiques or vintage items. Often they don’t know how to start figuring out what their antique is worth and then how to go about selling it. So I wrote a post to help them! The post How to Sell Antiques and Vintage Items gives tips on various ways to find out a value for your antiques. It also describes ways you can sell your items locally or via an online site.

Antique inspirations in Dale Tiffany lamps at EuroLuxAntiques.comWe are delighted to offer Dale Tiffany lamps and light fixtures in the gallery. These gorgeous hand-made stained glass lamps are truly antique inspirations!  Many of the intricate glass mosaics on the shades exactly replicate the original designs of Louis Comfort Tiffany lamps from over a century ago. Others are inspired by antique Tiffany lamps, and they are all crafted with the glass techniques pioneered by Tiffany. I know how much artistry goes into creating each unique Dale Tiffany lamp, so I was pleased to see a new video showing how the lamps are crafted. You can watch the short video or just read a summary in my post on Dale Tiffany lamps.

What have been your antique inspirations this month? Tell us about it in the comments box below.

Client Spotlight: Console Table in San Francisco, CA

A gorgeous console table makes a stylish and very useful addition to any home. We have a large range of console tables at EuroLuxAntiques.com and sometimes customers are spoiled for choice!

Marseille Console Table from EuroLuxAntiques.comElizabeth L. in San Francisco, CA, told me she was trying to choose between three different console tables for her long, narrow hallway, but was having a hard time picking which was the perfect one. I suggested printing out photos of each table and hanging them in the hall above the space where the table would live. That way she could walk by the choices each time she passed through the hallway, with the hope that one would jump out at her in time. Elizabeth called in the help of a friend, who immediately pointed out this Woodbridge Marseille Console Table as the clear winner.

Console Table from EuroLuxAntiques.com at home in our client's hallwayElizabeth admired her friend’s taste in design so she went with that choice and is very pleased! Doesn’t it look fantastic in her hallway? The elegant reproduction console table in a traditional French style is a generous 54 inches long, but at a slender 12 inches deep it’s a perfect fit for the narrow space. The pretty posy of flowers pops against the rich cherry veneer of the solid wood table. The table is hand-waxed and distressed to give the illusion of age and the C-curved sides and tapered legs add to the streamlined silhouette so the table doesn’t overwhelm the space. I love the way Elizabeth created a striking vignette with the mirror and art above the console table, flanking a vintage style gilded letter E!

Ambella Home console table from EuroLuxAntiques.com

Ambella Home console table

Console tables are very flexible pieces of furniture and can be used in so many ways. They make the maximum use of a narrow space like Elizabeth’s hallway, but can also be used as an accent table in a larger room, providing space to display your antiques and collectibles, framed family photos, or a beautiful table lamp.

Designs range from ultra modern to traditional antique looks – as you can see in this selection currently in our gallery. (Click on the photos to find out more details.)

A console table can also serve to visually separate and define different areas of a open-plan living area if you place it at a right angle to the wall. A console table can even double-up as a dressing table in a small scale bedroom, or provide extra space to stack guest towels and store necessities in a compact bathroom.

Demi Lune Console Table from EuroLuxAntiques.com

While most console tables are by their very nature rectangular, a demi lune or half moon curved table can look very charming and create interesting visual texture by breaking up a linear space.

3 Updated Recipes for Your Thanksgiving

As the big day approaches, have you considered what you’re going to serve on Thanksgiving? We love the traditional trimmings, along with the turkey, but sometimes it’s nice to add a new dish into the rotation. Something that puts an interesting spin on the same-old, same-old. We rounded up a few fun dishes for your consideration this Thanksgiving.

Cranberry Royale Sorbet

Photo of cranberry sorbet in ice cream machine

Joy is a self-described Taiwanese-American girl living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After a recent cranberry-picking expedition, she made this beautiful recipe from the book Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home. If you’re tired of cranberry sauce or cranberry relish, this cranberry sorbet might add just the twist you’ve been looking for. As an added bonus, Joy’s blog includes not only the recipe for Cranberry Royale Sorbet but her own version of Oslo Ambrosia: a meringue topped with Cranberry Royale, which is in turn topped with raspberry preserves and coconut whipped cream. Cranberries as dessert! Who knew?

Sweet Potato Hummus

Photo of sweet potato hummus in white fluted cup

Some people love baked sweet potatoes (also called yams), while others enjoy the traditional sweet potato casserole, complete with syrupy sauce and marshmallow topping. Flickr user Kari Sullivan brings the humble sweet potato into the modern era with this recipe for yam-based hummus. What an interesting appetizer. We can see using leftover baked sweet potatoes for this and enjoying it as a snack on Black Friday.

Roasted Pears with Bleu Cheese

Photo of pear halves stuffed with bleu cheese and nuts on a baking sheet

Pumpkin pie? Sure. Pecan pie? Definitely! But if you’re craving a new dessert this Thanksgiving, check out Roasted Pears with Bleu Cheese. From one of the Barefoot Contessa’s cookbooks, this recipe gets a bit of a spin from Adam Roberts at his blog, The Amateur Gourmet. Simultaneously sweet and savory, these roasted pears cover the dessert and cheese courses all in one!

Serving for a Crowd

After you’ve decided on your delicious menu for Thanksgiving, you may be faced with the time-honored conundrum of how to serve them all. We’ve got you covered. An antique or vintage buffet, server or console table like the one pictured adds extra space and a beautiful design touch to your interior.

We’re looking forward to the company of family this holiday, coupled with great food. What delectable dishes do you plan to serve this year?
