Anyone who is interested in home decor enjoys a sneak peek inside someone else’s house. It’s also a good way to see how other people live with antiques and incorporate them into today’s homes. Plus, thanks to the kindness of our customers, we get a mini tour of some mighty fine homes!

Here is a roundup of our antique furniture customer spotlights for the last six months, in case you missed seeing them. Click the links to read the full story and see more photos.

South Carolina Historic Home PictureThis is an example of one of those mighty fine homes I was telling you about! We delivered a handsome antique French Renaissance buffet to the this gorgeous historic home built in 1810 in Winnsboro, SC.  Read the antique Renaissance buffet blog post to see photographs of the interior including our intricately carved antique buffet in the charming dining room and several of our vintage chandeliers hanging in other rooms.

French Antique Brittany Bed

Greg and I personally delivered a stunning French antique Brittany bed and a Brittany buffet to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL. May retired here but she used to travel a lot to Europe and she loves Paris, so she especially enjoys buying antique French furniture. May bought an 1880 chestnut wood French Brittany antique bed, heavily carved with scenes of villagers and windmills. She also bought a Brittany style buffet dating to the same year, and asked us if we could alter the buffet to fit a TV for her bedroom. We could and we did! See more photos of the converted buffet and of May’s 14th floor apartment with its lovely views in the Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed blog post.

Vintage French Rococo Dining ChairsFran P. in Concord, NC, bought this beautiful set of vintage French Rococo dining chairs for her dining room. The six mahogany vintage French dining chairs date to 1950 and the chairs feature curvy lines from the cabriole legs to the carved curlicues.

The soft pinky beige fabric upholstery is also pretty in Fran’s dining room. It blends very well with the colors in her rug and the gilded Rococo mirror,

Antique French Provincial Armoire repurposedWe delivered a handsome antique French Provincial armoire to our customers Paul and Lane near Clemson, SC.  for them to repurpose into a unique gun cabinet!

The armoire is carved in the Normandy style, dating to 1890, with a large carved vase of flowers on the top and many carvings of birds.

Paul is going to convert the armoire himself. Lane is pleased to have a terrific full-length mirror in the master bedroom and she likes the fact that the mirrored doors will hide the gun collection.

See our blog post Antique Armoire Repurposed as a Gun Cabinet for more pictures including the antique Louis XV Buffet the couple bought from us for their dining room and another example of how a bookcase was repurposed as a gun cabinet!

Princess Diana Family Home Althorp Furniture

Althorp House furniture inspirationThe Althorp Living History collection of furniture is based on the antique furniture from Princess Diana’s ancestral home in England. We are delighted that we are now supplying this elegant collection to our customers. Each piece is beautifully hand-crafted by Theodore Alexander furniture makers.

This is Althorp, the childhood home and final resting place of the late Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales. Her brother Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, still lives there and he has allowed Theodore Alexander access to make the Althorp furniture collection.

Althorp Furniture: Marlborough Room

The house was built in 1508 by the Spencer family, set in 550 acres of parkland near Northampton, 70 miles north of London. Althorp has 90 rooms that are all beautifully decorated with antiques added to the house by generations of Princess Diana’s ancestors over five centuries. This is the Marlborough Room. The Victorian rosewood dining table pulls extends to seat up to 42 guests!

Theodore Alexander Althorp BedEvery piece in the Theodore Alexander Althorp furniture collection is either an exact reproduction of furniture in the Althorp estate, or is inspired by it. What an amazing and exciting challenge that must have been for the master craftsmen at Theodore Alexander!

These pieces, like all Theodore Alexander furniture, are hand-crafted with superb finishes.

For example, this four-poster Althorp bed in the style of George III is crafted in handsome mahogany with a gorgeous flame mahogany veneer design and brass accents. The acanthus leaf motif, carved columns and spiral pine cone finials create a very luxurious impression.

Theodore Alexander Althorp DeskThis Althorp Living History desk is an absolutely darling piece of furniture. Imagine sitting down before the Louis XV Rococo style desk to write your journal or your correspondence!

This fine Althorp desk is crafted in mahogany and rosewood with cast brass accents on the cabriole legs. The serpentine top adds to the seductive appeal!

Theodore Alexander Althorp Sofa SetteeYou will have a great conversational starter when you welcome your guests to take a seat in this Theodore Alexander Althorp settee! Your friends will love to hear the story of its origins. The mahogany settee with leather upholstery is crafted in the Georgian style with shapely cabriole legs and a waisted back. Client Spotlight: Antique Armoire Repurposed as Gun Cabinet

We just delivered a beautiful antique French Provincial armoire to our customers Paul and Lane for them to turn into a unique gun cabinet!

Antique French Provincial ArmoirePaul and Lane live just outside of Clemson, SC. and they purchased a gorgeous Louis XV Buffet from us many years ago. So when they were looking for something beautiful and antique in which to store Paul’s gun collection, they decided to take a trip to Newberry and check out what we had in stock. Paul and Lane perused our EuroLuxHome antiques gallery for a bit and told me they were interested in this very beautiful French Provincial armoire.

The armoire is carved in the Normandy style and it dates to 1890. The focal point is a large carved vase of flowers on the top. Among many other carvings covering the cabinet you can see charming bird carvings at the top of the mirrors, pecking at grapes or berries.

Antique GunCabinetThe couple liked the armoire but they didn’t think it would work as a gun cabinet. Au contraire, mon frère! I was quick to pull out photos of a smaller Hunting Bookcase that another customer had converted to a gun cabinet, and that started the creative juices flowing.

Paul does woodworking as a hobby – he even built the large bookcases that line the hall to their master bedroom – so he thought he could tackle this project to convert the armoire.

Lane liked that the mirrored doors would hide the gun collection and also give her a wonderful full-length mirror in the master bedroom – an all-around winning combination!

This is how the antique French Provincial armoire looks in their bedroom. It’s really fabulous and such a decoratively carved piece!

Antique French Provincial Armoire repurposed

While we were delivering the armoire, we were able to snap a photo of the antique Louis XV Buffet from Liege, Belgium, that they bought from us years ago. Now it graces their handsome dining room.

I love the tray ceiling with the noble chandelier. The antique buffet looks perfect in this space. We hope Paul and Lane will visit us again when on the hunt for their next antique treasure!

Client Spotlight: Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed

Deliver Antique Brittany BedGreg and I just delivered a French antique Brittany buffet and Brittany bed to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL.

It was one of our slowest deliveries because we had to make a bunch of trips up and down the elevator as May lives on the 14th floor.

But what a spectacular view she has from every room in her lovely home, which is filled with European antiques!

May retired to Pensacola Beach from Connecticut, but in her corporate life, she traveled frequently to Europe.

Pensacola ViewThat is how she fell in love with European interior design, and Paris is her very favorite place to be.

May bought a couple of pieces of furniture from EuroLuxHome.com. The first was an 1880 French Brittany antique bed.

French Antique Brittany Bed

The antique Brittany bed is heavily carved in chestnut wood, with wonderful scenes in traditional Brittany style. The top of the headboard is carved with a man and women relaxing beneath a windmill. You can almost see the sails turning on the windmill because the carving is so detailed! The footboard panel depicts merry country villagers celebrating. Floral carvings and ship wheels also adorn the bed. You can see close-ups of similar carvings in the antique French Brittany furniture currently for sale on our website.

Antique French Brittany Buffet

The antique French Brittany style buffet also dates to 1880 and it is also elaborately hand-carved with scenes of rural life. Figures of a man and woman act as support columns and add a whimsical touch to this beautiful antique buffet.

French Antique Brittany Buffet

These French country folk know how to enjoy themselves! Here they gather round a wine barrel to enjoy themselves after a long day working in the fields!  May contacted me to ask if we could have the Brittany buffet altered to accommodate a TV for viewing in her bedroom.

Converted Antique Brittany Buffet

We had a local restoration company remove the central support in between the left and center upper doors, and attach it to the end of the left door. They did a wonderful job.

The Brittany buffet and bed looked fantastic in May’s bedroom and they now enjoy a fantastic view of the ocean and bay. Bo, May’s charming whippet, was very helpful during the whole delivery. I wish I had taken a photo of him! He was such a pretty dog.

Then we left to drive on to New Orleans… More about that in another blog post! For now, thanks to May for letting us share her stunning views and photos of the antique Brittany bed and buffet in her home.

Client Spotlight: Antique French Hunting Bed Size Converted

Erin S. found our EuroLuxHome.com website as she was looking for an interesting antique bed for her new home in Colorado. She was moving from Arkansas, so we held the bed for her for a few months until she was ready for us to ship it to her new home.  She also wanted us to convert the bed from full size to queen size.

antique French Hunting Bed converted in size

This is the antique French Hunting style bed that Erin chose, lavishly carved in beautifully aged wood and dating to around the year 1900. Antique beds are typically always full size and most of the time will accommodate a standard full-size mattress and box spring set. However, they can be converted to a queen size if the headboard is around 60 inches wide. This one was, so we converted the bed from full size to queen size for Erin.

French Antique Bed Converted in size

Here is the antique bed in Erin’s home! Isn’t it stunning?  The bed is richly carved including a large medallion on the headboard surrounded by intricate swirls, and French heraldic motifs on the foot board. Chunky barley twist bed posts are crowned with turned finials. Even the side rails boast a striking and heavily textured carved pattern.

Antique French Hunting Bed

I love the rich color combination of red and gold that Erin has chosen to complement the dark oak of the antique Hunting bed and the heavy carvings are right at home in Colorado! The antique screen with a floral print to the right of the bed and the antique trunk beneath are lovely additions to this warm and cozy room. I think Erin will be as snug as a bug during the upcoming winter!

Thanks for sharing photos of your lovely bedroom, Erin. We can tell you have a great design eye and I bet the rest of your new home is shaping up beautifully too.

Blog readers who like this antique furnishing style can enjoy some more eye candy by checking out our antique French Hunting style furniture, all direct imports from France. Or create a bedroom as beautiful as Erin’s by browsing all our new and antique beds.

Stylish Seating for a Traditional Guest Room

Yesterday I shared some ideas on how to create Beautiful Guest Rooms in Traditional Style. That post focused on the essential furnishings that every guest needs for an overnight stay. Today I’m going to look at practical and stylish seating choices for a traditional guest room.

This guest room in Philadelphia is large enough for a separate seating area away from the bed. If you are lucky enough to have a generously proportioned guest room too, it is nice for your visitors to have a private corner to relax, read, or chat on the phone away from the main living area.

If you don’t have the space for a whole seating area, then a cozy arm chair or other comfortable chair will still be much appreciated. At the very least, it’s good to try to place an attractive traditional bench or ottoman at the foot of the bed. It helps the bed look more ‘finished’ as well as providing some seating. The old chest in this photo looks wonderful and it cleverly doubles as storage. The Antique French Baccarat crystal chandelier is also a stunning addition to make a visitor feel very special. Funnily enough, I’m pretty sure we have that charming wall bracket or one very similar in our selection of Chelsea House wall brackets and display shelves!

Leather Bench TrunkWe have some nice storage seating in the gallery that would work very well at the foot of the bed.  For example, this handsome Sarreid leather trunk bench is one of the company’s most popular pieces, and you can see why! The trunk is 18″ high, so it’s a good seating height similar to an ottoman, and it is crafted in buffalo leather, wood, iron and brass. The sturdy trunk bench has an antiqued finish and it’s a fun addition to a guest room as it creates a traveler theme for your friends passing through on their journeys.

Bench with basketsWhile a trunk bench is great to stash extra blankets, something like this handsome new bench with an antiqued finish provides a different kind of storage. Convenient baskets beneath the seat can be used for toiletries or your guests’ bits and pieces. The versatile baskets are easy to pull out and use in many ways during a stay.

If you have ample storage and dressers already, then a sweet little bench at the foot of the bed still gives your guests a place to perch for a few peaceful moments. Or maybe it will serve as a tray or display surface sometimes, as in this photograph with a tea set on the bench. That would be a pleasant welcome after a long journey, wouldn’t it?

Jonathan Charles Country Farmhouse BenchThis elegant walnut Jonathan Charles bench from the Country Farmhouse collection has a similar look. The high scrolling arms make a graceful silhouette to frame the bed.

So many choices! But whatever chair or bench style you like, your visitors will thank you for the time and thought you put into choosing seating for the guest room so they don’t have to sit on the bed all the time!

If you’ve enjoyed this post on guest room seating, also get inspiration from the fabulous guest rooms featured in my post on Beautiful Guest Rooms in Traditional Style.

Beautiful Guest Rooms with Traditional Style

Around the holidays there are so many visitors coming and going, I thought it was a good time to look at some beautiful guest rooms designed with traditional style. These inviting guest bedrooms all offer a warm welcome and the practical comforts to keep your favorite friends and family coming back for more!

Let’s start with the essentials. A gorgeous bed makes your guest feel special before they even open their suitcase. This room with French style decor and antique furniture is a perfect example. (You can find some fabulous new, vintage and antique beds on our website.) The pale pastel blues make this a very serene guest room.

Traditional Bedroom by Easton Interior Designers & Decorators Bountiful

A pair of traditional nightstands beside the bed provides pleasing visual balance as well as a useful place for your guests to keep their bits and pieces organized. If you’ve ever slept in a makeshift bedroom without a bedside table, you’ll know that it’s a bit like injuring your thumb. You don’t realize how much you use it till you can’t! A well-dressed bedside table will have a lamp, some tissues easily to hand and an alarm clock. (A cell phone clock is just not the same when you have to hunt around for it in the middle of the night!) A pitcher of water, a notepad and pan, and a few magazines or books are always appreciated too.

Of course you want some easy-to-reach lighting by the bed. This Mediterranean guest bedroom with an antique-inspired bed features charming wall lamps. This is a great idea as it keeps the bedside table top clear. However, the wall sconce approach is best if you will only ever have the bed in one place. Otherwise you’ll be rewiring every time you move the furniture around!

Dale Tiffany Genoa Table LampMany people opt for a table lamp for more flexibility. Our collection includes this stunning new Dale Tiffany bedside lamp with a hand-crafted glass shade.

The dragonfly design is designed to replicate the dragonfly designs on original Louis Comfort Tiffany antique lamps. A built-in nightlight glows through the glass base to silhouette the pretty dragonflies, making it a lovely finishing touch to comfort a child who is staying over for the night. Or, let’s admit it, the nightlight will be great for adults too. We all know what it’s like to wake up and fumble around in a dark room when we’re staying in a strange place!

The next ‘essential’ for a guest bedroom is something to put your suitcase on. It gets very old very quickly when you are digging around in a suitcase on the floor to find something. You can buy a suitcase rack of the type found in hotels and whip that out every time friends arrive, folding it up neatly in a closet the rest of the time. The wooden luggage rack under the window in this very traditional French Country bedroom manages to blend in well enough.  In any case, our eyes are on the gorgeous toile bed linens, the window treatments and that delicious painted armoire! (If you are looking for a wardrobe, we have some equally lovely new and antique armoires on our website.)

Amish Wooden BenchOr use a nice wooden bench like this new Amish bench for travel bags. As long as the bench is big enough to support a suitcase, you then have the option to use the bench as a useful piece of furniture when nobody is visiting. The main thing is to choose an easy-to-clean surface. Wood or metal are good, but you don’t want an upholstered bench to double up as a suitcase rack for the same reason you don’t want people putting their suitcases on the bed. Dirt alert!

These are the basic pieces of furniture for a beautiful traditional style guest bedroom. In my next post I look at stylish guest room seating ideas to ensure your visitors are always comfortable!
