Client Spotlight: Antique Armoire Repurposed as Gun Cabinet

We just delivered a beautiful antique French Provincial armoire to our customers Paul and Lane for them to turn into a unique gun cabinet!

Antique French Provincial ArmoirePaul and Lane live just outside of Clemson, SC. and they purchased a gorgeous Louis XV Buffet from us many years ago. So when they were looking for something beautiful and antique in which to store Paul’s gun collection, they decided to take a trip to Newberry and check out what we had in stock. Paul and Lane perused our EuroLuxHome antiques gallery for a bit and told me they were interested in this very beautiful French Provincial armoire.

The armoire is carved in the Normandy style and it dates to 1890. The focal point is a large carved vase of flowers on the top. Among many other carvings covering the cabinet you can see charming bird carvings at the top of the mirrors, pecking at grapes or berries.

Antique GunCabinetThe couple liked the armoire but they didn’t think it would work as a gun cabinet. Au contraire, mon frère! I was quick to pull out photos of a smaller Hunting Bookcase that another customer had converted to a gun cabinet, and that started the creative juices flowing.

Paul does woodworking as a hobby – he even built the large bookcases that line the hall to their master bedroom – so he thought he could tackle this project to convert the armoire.

Lane liked that the mirrored doors would hide the gun collection and also give her a wonderful full-length mirror in the master bedroom – an all-around winning combination!

This is how the antique French Provincial armoire looks in their bedroom. It’s really fabulous and such a decoratively carved piece!

While we were delivering the armoire, we were able to snap a photo of the antique Louis XV Buffet from Liege, Belgium, that they bought from us years ago. Now it graces their handsome dining room.

I love the tray ceiling with the noble chandelier. The antique buffet looks perfect in this space. We hope Paul and Lane will visit us again when on the hunt for their next antique treasure!

Best of July 2013: High Style for High Summer

We’ve explored high style for high summer in many of our July blog posts. Topics included the glitzy design of a French palace, traditional royal nursery decor, and a star-studded antique armoire in our gallery. But high style comes in many guises, so let’s revisit some of our favorite July posts.

High Style with a 1710 Louis XIV armoire owned by late movie critic Gene Siskel. On consignment at EUROLUXANTIQUES.COMI was thrilled to write the story behind this month’s Star Buy Louis XIV Armoire. Dating to 1710, the wonderful antique Louis XIV armoire currently on consignment in our gallery was owned by the late movie critic, Gene Siskel. He bought it at the Biennale de Paris art festival. The walnut armoire or closet is beautifully decorated with a star design in relief on each of the two doors. As the armoire was crafted in France 300 years ago during the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV, I started thinking about Louis XIV’s great legacy: The Palace of Versailles. The palace is on on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and visitors from all over the world still flock to see it. Greg and I went too! The interiors are jaw-dropping, as you see in my post on Palace of Versailles historic interiors.

1900 Mechelen Buffet Stained Glass DoorThe French don’t have a monopoly on high style, although Mechelen style antique furniture was influenced by the French Hunting style. Mechelen furniture hails from the Belgian city of Mechelen and it is heavily-carved with exotic details like lions’ heads. I explained the history and how to recognize these lovely antiques in my post What is Mechelen Style Antique Furniture? I also looked at traditional and comforting farmhouse decor, which appeals to city-dwellers as much as it does to those who live in the country. The farmhouse look often relies on a few simple details, as described in my tips on how to create farmhouse style.

The world’s media was all abuzz over the arrival of Princess Kate and Prince William’s first baby. Every baby is a prince or princess, even if it’s not heir to a throne and I gave ideas on designing a traditional style nursery. I was inspired by interior designers’ pictures of how the new royal nursery might look.

High style upcycled chandelier crafted with 360 vintage silverplate spoons. EuroLuxAntiques.comUpcycled chandeliers were the topic of one of our client spotlights this month. We helped the new Tupelo Honey Cafe that recently opened Greenville, SC, by providing an upcycled chandelier to add to the restaurant’s smart contemporary decor. The chandelier really is high style in more ways than one – you have to look up to see it! The upcycled chandeliers in our gallery illustrate the upcycling trend perfectly. Upcycling is a creative way of taking vintage items to refashion them into something completely different. For example, the spoondelier in this picture was custom-made by an artist using 360 vintage silverplate spoons.

Antique chairs get a new sense of high style after reupholstery. EuroLuxAntiques.comOn a similar note, we enjoyed hearing about this antique chair upholstery makeover by our client Susan. She gave new life to a set of twelve oak Renaissance style chairs she purchased from us. Our descriptions of the antique chairs at EuroLuxAntiques.com always mention if the upholstery needs replacing, and those chairs offer great value for money. They also offer the opportunity to add your own high style stamp by choosing your own upholstery fabric and colors.

I hope as we head into the high summer month of August, you’re enjoying high style in your own home, however that looks to you!

Palace of Versailles Historic Interiors

I blogged earlier this month about a Louis XIV armoire formerly owned by late movie critic Gene Siskel. The walnut armoire dates to 1710 and is currently for sale in our gallery. That got me thinking about Louis XIV who was on the throne of France at the time this antique armoire was crafted. One of the greatest achievements of Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King, is the fabulous Château de Versailles or Palace of Versailles in France.

Greg and I loved our trip to the Palace of Versailles and fondly remember promenading through the Hall of Mirrors.

Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors

You can see why it’s called the Hall of Mirrors! The Château was originally a hunting lodge for King Louis XIII. But it was his son, Louis XIV who expanded it and transformed it into a beautiful palace. He moved the entire court and government from Paris to Versailles in 1682, and the Hall of Mirrors was the place where Louis XIV impressed guests with his opulent display of royal power and wealth.
Marie Antionette Gilded Study Palace of Versailles

The Palace of Versailles remained the center of political power until the French Revolution in 1789, during the reign of Louis XIV’s descendent King Louis XVI and his wife Queen Marie Antoinette. This is the Gilded Study or Le Cabinet Doré. It’s the private chamber where Marie Antoinette played music and relaxed with her children and friends. The room was decorated this way in 1783, and contains items owned by Marie Antoinette including a Sevres vase and a Riesener chest of drawers.

The Palace of VersaiPalace of Versailles Queen's Chamberlles is a visual feast, as you can tell by this picture of the Queen’s Chamber. It’s a perfect example of the Palace’s lavish design. Just imagine: all the ornate embroidery on those tapestries and canopy would have been stitched by hand. With the golden textiles and gilding shimmering all over the room, you wonder how anyone could sleep in there at all! Those guys didn’t believe in understatement, did they?

We know many of our customers are keen travelers to Europe, so if you’re heading to France this year, the Palace of Versailles is well worth a visit, just a short hop southwest of Paris.

Star Buy: Louis XIV Armoire Owned By Movie Critic Gene Siskel

I rarely shine the spotlight on just one item from the EuroLuxAntiques.com gallery, but this fabulous Louis XIV armoire has such a great story behind it, I’m excited to share it with you.

1710 Louis XIV armoire purchased by movie critic Gene Siskel at Biennale de Paris. On consignment at EUROLUXANTIQUES.COMThe walnut Louis XIV armoire dates to 1710, and was owned by the late movie critic, Gene Siskel. He hand-selected it for his home at the prestigious Biennale de Paris art festival in France. Greg and I were deeply honored that Mr. Siskel’s widow chose to trust the armoire to us – it’s on consignment now in our gallery.

Just imagine: This French antique was crafted more than three centuries ago when King Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King, was on the throne of France. It’s an extremely impressive cabinet with a rich patina on the walnut wood and a striking star design in relief on each of the two doors. It’s a star-studded armoire in every sense!

Louis XIV Armoire Star DoorsHere’s a close-up of those stars on the doors – or étoiles in French. You can really see the beauty of the walnut wood grain and patina. The timeless elegance of the Louis XIV armoire means that it would look perfectly at home in either a contemporary setting or in more traditional decor, surrounded by other antiques.

Of course, it would also be a great conversation starter when guests visit and you tell them about its unique history.

Louis XIV Armoire Interior
At nearly 7.5 feet high and more than 5 feet wide, the large armoire makes quite a style statement. The deep crown molding is exceptionally fine and the armoire rests on handsome bun feet. But let’s not be so swept away by beauty that we forget about function! The shelf space inside the large armoire provides plenty of room to store your treasures, whether you use it for family keepsakes, your best linens or your favorite cashmere sweaters and scarves.

Delivering 1710 Louis XIV Armoire to the EuroLuxAntiques.com GalleryHere’s a photo of Greg and Frank moving the wonderful period Louis XIV armoire into the gallery – drive it carefully boys, it’s precious cargo! Greg and I are movie buffs and we grew up watching Siskel and Ebert, so it is especially wonderful to help find this exceptional armoire a new home.

If you’re interested in owning this historic antique and adding the next part of the story to its journey across three centuries and two continents, you can see more details about the Louis XIV armoire at our website. In any case, I hope you enjoy the photos and the story behind it as much as I do!

Client Spotlight: French Country Antique Furniture in Alabama

EuroLuxAntiques.com clients Sandy and Brent gravitate toward French Country and Arts and Crafts styles furniture.

Sandy and Brent H. in Northport, Alabama, are wonderful, truly hospitable Southern folks. They’ve been customers for several years now. As you can see in this photo, their home is filled with quite a large collection of beautiful French antique furniture. They especially gravitate toward French Country and Arts and Crafts styles.

French Country Secretary Desk and Louis XVI style armchair. EuroLuxAntiques.comWe first met Sandy and Brent back in 2010 when they purchased a charming French Country Secretary Desk. (It’s the perfect place to practice the vintage art of letter writing!) The secretary desk looks wonderful in a corner of one of the bedrooms, paired with a Louis XVI style armchair.

Louis XV Bed in this French Country style guest bedroom. EuroLuxAntiques.comSandy & Brent tell us they’ve enjoyed receiving our newsletters ever since that first purchase, and in a 2012 newsletter they spotted a Louis XV Bed that now occupies one of their guest rooms. When we said we also had a matching armoire and vanity with a pretty orangey-red marble top, they just couldn’t resist bringing the whole set home.

French Country style antique vanity and a Louis XV bed. EuroLuxAntiques.comDue to the fragile nature of the vanity mirror and because Sandy and Brent were within driving distance, Greg and I decided to personally deliver the antique Louis XV bedroom set. Sometimes it is nice to get out of the office and meet our customers in person!

Heavily carved antique hall bench beneath the stained glass panels - and a great collection of cowboy hats! EuroLuxAntiques.com

Sandy recognized us immediately from our photos on the website and was a very gracious hostess. We couldn’t help ooohing and aaahing over her collection, and particularly liked the heavily carved antique Hall Bench in the foyer with antique stained glass panels hung above. Can you tell Brent hails from Texas with his cowboy hats on display?

Antique Louis XV nightstand to match our client's French Country bedroom suite. EuroLuxAntiques.com

That bedroom set didn’t have a nightstand, so Sandy and Brent asked us to keep an eye out for an antique Louis XV nightstand that would match their French Country bedroom suite. About six months later, we found a gorgeous green-marble topped nightstand that was a wonderful match. We sent the photo to Sandy & Brent while we waited for the container to arrive in the US. The photo showed the whole Louis XV bedroom suite – and it happened again! Sandy and Brent fell in love with the whole set and just had to bring that one home too!

Louis XV marble-topped vanity and bed This new set included an armoire, full-size bed, green marble-topped vanity, and nightstand. Brent and Sandy already had another Louis XV bed set up in their second guest room, but were planning to move it to a room that was currently being used as an office. We set up the armoire in the office room and then set up the vanity in the second guest room. We left the bed against the wall at their request.

Of course the biggest surprise was that Sandy had dinner waiting for us upon our arrival! She prepared a delicious pot roast with carrots and potatoes and even baked a cake with scrumptious home-made icing. What a fantastic treat for us and how very kind and thoughtful of Sandy! We truly appreciate our customers at EuroLux Antiques – another big shout out of thanks to Sandy and Brent!

Client Spotlight: Baby Makes 8! Plus Using Antique Furniture in a Child’s Bedroom

Photo of our clients Bruce and Julie with baby Bruce Junior and newborn Bella Lynn.

Baby Bella makes…eight! Our clients Bruce and Julie pose in front of their new antique French Brittany buffet with Bruce Junior and Bella Lynn.

When we last visited Bruce and Julie of Whitmire, SC, they had just purchased an antique French Brittany armoire from us to use in their master bedroom. When we visited them again a couple of weeks ago to deliver their new antique Brittany buffet for the entryway, we discovered another new addition to the master bedroom: a crib for baby number eight! Little Bella Lynn joins seven siblings, all under age 14. Congratulations!

On this visit, I was struck by how Bruce and Julie have successfully incorporated antique furniture into their children’s rooms. Many people don’t think children and antique furniture can coexist peacefully, but Bruce and Julie prove that’s not the case. Not only do their children live with antiques, they seem to love them. I especially got a chuckle out of seeing the Barbie dolls neatly lined up on the mantelpiece in one of the girls’ rooms. Charming!

Bruce and Julie’s home is blessed with a large entryway, and they’d been making routine trips to our bricks-and-mortar gallery in Newberry to find a suitably scaled antique French buffet to furnish the grand entry. Luckily we just received a new container from Europe, and we could hardly get this particular buffet off the ship fast enough! Bruce and Julie snapped it up, and as you can see it’s the perfect fit for their decor.

Bruce is quite a woodworker, and I admired all the embellishments he’s made to the original mantels throughout the house. I also love the way Bruce and Julie use chandeliers throughout their home (because, really, who can have too many crystal swags near the ceiling?!). Note how they scale the size of the chandelier to suit the room.

Great use of color in Bruce and Julie's dining room! Red can feel overwhelming, but the white fireplace, patterned upholstery, and glass decor balance the burgundy nicely.

We’ve been discussing the use of color all month, and Bruce and Julie’s home makes a great study in how to use rich paint colors and colorful furnishings in a harmonious design that’s not overpowering. I love the fact all the fireplace mantels are white, for example. This technique unifies the design throughout the house and helps balance the vivid wall color. In the dining room, red walls are balanced by patterned upholstery and glass accents. In the bedrooms, red furnishings contrast neutral wall colors. Well done!

We appreciate the repeat business from Bruce and Julie and wish them all the best with their new little one, Bella!

If you’d like to see your home featured in a client spotlight, email me photos! We love to show off our clients’ great interior designs.
