Client Spotlight: Antique French Buffet Louis XV

Antique Buffet Louis XV Rococo 1890Melodie A. of Raja Interiors in Chico, CA, wanted to find a gorgeous, antique Louis XV buffet to place in one of her client’s homes. We went searching for the perfect piece and located this beauty in France!

It is delightfully carved with Rococo styling in walnut wood with a lovely grain and rich patina and it dates to 1890.

When we found the buffet in France, there was a crack all the way through the glass in the right upper corner of the large glass door.

Perhaps a little wrinkle is not such a surprise for a buffet that is about 120 years old! What is more surprising is that we find so many of our antique buffets with the glass still in excellent shape. Those French craftsmen made furniture to last!

broken glass

We knew we would replace that glass panel prior to shipping, but we had no idea that it would take a specialist to cut and hand-grind the bevel. We took the broken pieces to our local glass store and they explained that due to the unusual shape of the glass (it sort of resembles a paisley), their machines could not possibly cut a bevel all the way around the piece. We also didn’t want to just replace it with flat glass, as that would take away from the beauty of the buffet.

After much searching and networking, I finally located a true artist, Charles Offutt, at Artisan in Glass, in Canton, Georgia. I sent the pieces to him and he said it took an entire day to hand-grind the beveled edge of the replacement glass. He is truly a miracle-worker in glass! If I didn’t know which panel had been replaced, I would never be able to tell. Here’s the buffet with the restored glass in its new home.

French Antique Buffet 1890

Melodie was very patient during this process and she contacted me to say that she received the buffet in good condition and both she and her client are very pleased. We are always glad to hear from happy customers! At more than 8 feet tall, the antique Louis XV buffet is definitely the grand dame of the space. That white ceramic pitcher sets it off so gracefully too. You could say: “It’s pitcher perfect!” Groan…

Client Spotlight: Buffet Carved with Famous Painting

This is an unusual story about an antique French buffet with a carving inspired by a well-known French painting.  Our customer Saul in Gurnee, IL, bought the antique Renaissance buffet from us last year while he and his wife were building a new home. Now they are settled in, Saul got in touch to purchase a bench from us and he also sent us a photo of the buffet in place. So let’s take a look!
Carved Antique Renaissance BuffetThis is the gorgeous antique Renaissance buffet, fabulously carved in walnut and dating to about 1900. On the top center door, there is a carving of two lovers on a swing under a tree, based on the 1873 painting titled Le Printemps (Springtime) by Pierre-Auguste Cot. I first saw the buffet at an antiques market in France and I was wowed by the carving of the lovers, so we had it shipped home to the gallery. The patina of the walnut is very nice – it has a warm glow. The Renaissance Revival Henry II-style buffet is also carved with other Renaissance-style flourishes, fruit, and faces.

Lovers on a swing carving

On this close-up of the door you see the lovers better. Isn’t it romantic and exquisitely carved? You can almost feel the breeze wafting through the folds of their robes.  Here’s the original Le Printemps so you can see how well the carving capture the painting, but in three dimensions:

Le Printemps

The artist  Pierre Auguste Cot lived from 1837 to 1883 and among his many prizes and medals he was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Le Printemps was one of his two most famous paintings. It is now on display in New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art .

Antique Renaissance Buffet in client home

And finally… here’s the buffet in Saul’s home. He says that he loves it! I noticed the nice table too with figure carvings on the legs. Saul told me it was an antique and be bought it because he liked it. I would guess that it may be French Renaissance dating to the turn of the century and I think it is also made in walnut,  so it is the perfect complement to the buffet.

leather window seat BG-225Saul also just bought this handsome new bench or window seat from us. It’s a very good match for the antique Renaissance pieces he has, with the leather upholstery, nailhead trim, decorative stretcher and a blackwash finish. I hope we’ll get a photo of this piece in your lovely new home too, Saul! I can’t wait to see how you continue to curate the furnishings and other decor as you obviously have a very clear vision in mind and it all looks terrific so far!

We’d love to hear readers’ comments about the carving of the painting. What do you think? Share your opinion in the comments.

Client Spotlight: Antique Renaissance Buffet in California

antique Renaissance BuffetWhen Natalya S. emailed from Palo Alto, CA, about a very pretty antique Renaissance style buffet she bought from us, it had been quite a while since we’d been in touch. In fact, Natalya bought this antique buffet back in August 2011! So I was thrilled that she took the time to send a wonderful photo of it in her home.

Natalya wrote, “We want to thank you for the nice antique buffet we purchased from you a few years ago and all your help.”

This is the sideboard or hutch. It’s a very high quality French antique Henry II Renaissance style buffet dating to 1900. Elaborately carved in walnut with flourishes and fruit, it has an especially nice grain pattern and patina.

Antique Renaissance Buffet Kitchen Diner

Here is the antique Renaissance style buffet looking fantastic in Natalya’s kitchen! I guess that with her three lively young sons running around, a big sturdy buffet is just what you need in the kitchen. This is one more than 8 feet high and about 5 feet wide, so it provides plenty of storage space as well as looking beautiful.

waterjet inlay marble, onyxThe leafy artwork on the wall above the stove is waterjet inlay made from marble, onyx, and some other stones. “You could probably find someone locally that may do the design that you like,” says Natalya. She suggests a company like this that does inlay marble collections.

The stove itself is a CornuFé 110 from La Cornu and it is so gorgeous I browsed around the La Cornu website. The company is a family business like ours, and it was founded in Paris, France, in 1908. The CornuFé 110 that looks so chic in Natalya’s kitchen is also available in different colors. Here it is in a soft blue in another traditional style kitchen. Isn’t it grand? Traditional Kitchen CornuFe Stove

The hood above Natalya’s stove is made by Vent-A-Hood. Natalya found it in a store after another customer made a special order of appliances with silver trim, but due to an error the appliances were shipped in polished brass. “The store had to sell them half price,” says Natalya. “It was an incredible find for us.”

As regular readers of our antiques and décor blog know, we always love seeing photos of our customers’ homes for our series of Client Spotlights. No matter how many years have gone by, we are always delighted to hear from customers about how our furniture or home accents are fitting into their home and, we hope, enhancing their life. So thank you Natalya for sharing the photo of your beautiful and unique kitchen!

Client Spotlight: Antique Buffet at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

Mary Ann H. contacted me to help her find an exceptional and impressive antique buffet for the lobby of the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston, MA. It’s one of the largest evangelical seminaries in North America and a donor had graciously given funds to decorate the lobby.

Antique Buffet Henry II Renaissance styleWe looked at all the antique buffets and sideboards in our gallery, and recommended this gorgeous Henry II Renaissance-style buffet dating to 1900. The French buffet is a stately nine feet tall, carved in walnut with a wonderful, warm patina. The antique buffet boasts elaborately carved details including coats of arms, urns and floral accents on the doors and pediment. Scroll cut railings, fluted posts, and pine cone finials add to the buffet’s majesty. The carved head of a Renaissance courtier smiles down above the glass-front center door. Thanks to its height and substance, the antique buffet stands proud to fill even the largest space. It was the perfect choice for a classic and dignified lobby area!

Antique buffet in seminary lobby

Here is the antique buffet in its new Boston home. It does indeed look stunning filled with bound books and decorated with transferware plates! On the day of the ribbon-cutting ceremony with the generous donor who made the new lobby space possible, Mary Ann wrote to thank us for our help. “As you can see, it adds so much charm and architectural interest to a lobby with little visual interest and no external windows,” said Mary Ann. “We are thrilled with the results!”

We were thrilled too when Mary Ann added: “You find such beautiful items on your forays across France. It was a pleasure working with you and seeing how committed you are to customer service. Thanks again so much for your care and professionalism. I’m sure it is this approach which has won you many loyal customers.”

On the other side of the room, Mary Ann placed a classic Chesterfield sofa with traditional upholstered chairs. She also added an interesting barley twist console table over an Oriental rug with soft, muted colors. The whole interior design of the lobby is elegant and inviting. We are delighted that the more than 100-year-old antique buffet found such a beautiful and inspiring place to spend its next century!

3 Updated Recipes for Your Thanksgiving

As the big day approaches, have you considered what you’re going to serve on Thanksgiving? We love the traditional trimmings, along with the turkey, but sometimes it’s nice to add a new dish into the rotation. Something that puts an interesting spin on the same-old, same-old. We rounded up a few fun dishes for your consideration this Thanksgiving.

Cranberry Royale Sorbet

Photo of cranberry sorbet in ice cream machine

Joy is a self-described Taiwanese-American girl living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After a recent cranberry-picking expedition, she made this beautiful recipe from the book Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home. If you’re tired of cranberry sauce or cranberry relish, this cranberry sorbet might add just the twist you’ve been looking for. As an added bonus, Joy’s blog includes not only the recipe for Cranberry Royale Sorbet but her own version of Oslo Ambrosia: a meringue topped with Cranberry Royale, which is in turn topped with raspberry preserves and coconut whipped cream. Cranberries as dessert! Who knew?

Sweet Potato Hummus

Some people love baked sweet potatoes (also called yams), while others enjoy the traditional sweet potato casserole, complete with syrupy sauce and marshmallow topping. Flickr user Kari Sullivan brings the humble sweet potato into the modern era with this recipe for yam-based hummus. What an interesting appetizer. We can see using leftover baked sweet potatoes for this and enjoying it as a snack on Black Friday.

Roasted Pears with Bleu Cheese

Photo of pear halves stuffed with bleu cheese and nuts on a baking sheet

Pumpkin pie? Sure. Pecan pie? Definitely! But if you’re craving a new dessert this Thanksgiving, check out Roasted Pears with Bleu Cheese. From one of the Barefoot Contessa’s cookbooks, this recipe gets a bit of a spin from Adam Roberts at his blog, The Amateur Gourmet. Simultaneously sweet and savory, these roasted pears cover the dessert and cheese courses all in one!

Serving for a Crowd

After you’ve decided on your delicious menu for Thanksgiving, you may be faced with the time-honored conundrum of how to serve them all. We’ve got you covered. An antique or vintage buffet, server or console table like the one pictured adds extra space and a beautiful design touch to your interior.

Antiques Buying Trip Day 4: Counting Cubes

After a few days on the road buying antiques in Europe, Aimee and Greg at EuroLux Antiques count how many cubes of antique furniture and vintage chandeliers they’ve purchased.  If we decide to bring in a 45 foot container, we still have quite a bit of space left to fill.

Guess we’ll have to keep buying!  Aimee shows off a beautiful antique Renaissance-style dining room suite carved in solid walnut:  a large, heavily-carved buffet, a marble-top server, a set of 6 embossed leather chairs, and a dining table.

Thanks for tagging along on our European Antiques Buying Trip!  Stay tuned for the next episode!
