Eglomise Glass Furniture and Home Decor

Antiqued Mirror Gold EglomiseWe have added more églomisé glass furniture and decor to our online EuroLuxHome.com gallery recently. This is a very special technique that takes a lot of expertise for craftsmen and women to achieve. The results are breathtakingly beautiful!

The verre églomisé technique sometimes gives an aged or antiqued look to glass or a mirror, and sometimes it gives a very pretty and decorative effect.

Verre églomisé is a French phrase, and the term means that the glass (verre in French) has a design or gilding applied on the rear of the glass to create a mirror finish.

This antiqued gilt and eglomise wall mirror in our store is a good example.

You can see how the églomisé effect applied to the back of the glass makes the wall mirror look naturally aged.

Another way of applying the églomisé technique is in a very decorative piece, like this superb new John-Richard églomisé credenza.

Eglomise CredenzaThe John-Richard credenza is extraordinary with its antiqued gold and abstract pattern. We reckon that this piece would work in so many interior design styles. It is perfect for a glamorous Art Deco interior, and it will also pack a punch in a Mid-Century Modern, Modern or Contemporary home. The artisans at John-Richard have really outdone themselves.

Eglomise screenThis is also a John-Richard piece. The John-Richard églomisé floor screen is less overtly ornate in the design of the glass than the credenza above, but it shows how an églomisé finish can turn a simple piece of glass into a fairyland! It also turns it semi-opaque, which is very useful if you are the person getting dressed behind the screen!

Scarborough House Eglomise Center TableThe gold leaf églomisé table top on this incredible Scarborough House center table almost plays second fiddle to the ornately hand-carved base. But not quite!

The beautiful gold leaf églomisé top is the perfect complement to the hand-carved wood. A plain glass top here might look as if something was a little out of balance… the heavily carved table needs a top that can stand up to it! The decorative reverse painted gold leaf glass top does exactly that.  If you want to create a handsome focal point for your foyer, living room or great room, this table has you covered!

There is something quite magical about églomisé glass furniture and decor that simply takes my breath away. It has a delicate and slightly mysterious quality. I hope that you feel the same way after our little tour! To see all the églomisé glass furniture and decor on our website, just click the link and extend your tour of wonderland.

Distressed Furniture

If you are looking for distressed furniture styles, then obviously our antique French furniture is naturally distressed from at least once century of being loved and used!  Sometimes though, our customers want new pieces that just look old… they want antique-inspired furniture that is newly crafted but with an aged and distressed look.  We have plenty of options for new furniture and home decor on our website so we are happy to help out!  Today I’m going to tell you how some of our furniture makers work their magic to achieve their distressed furniture finishes.

Jonathan Charles Distressed Desk Some of the best antique-inspired furniture is crafted using the same techniques that were used for the original antiques. Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture is a good example – their reproductions include hand-cut marquetry and intricate carved details. Then their pieces are aged to look like an antique.  This Jonathan Charles distressed bureau in the Queen Anne style gives you a taste of their skills!

Jonathan Sowter, founder of the company and a cabinet maker since he was 12 years old, says: “If you take a piece of furniture and finish it fantastically, people could imagine it’s an antique. It’s all in the finish.”

Jonathan Charles distressed desk

That requires special knowledge to get the distressed furniture look. Sowter says that his craftsmen understand where a piece of furniture would have bangs and knocks and scrapes after years of use, and where it wouldn’t.

“Even shading around the handle,” Sowter says, “because when you clean antiques for hundreds of years you don’t always clean in and around the handle!”

This close-up of a section of the oak bureau shows what he means. The bureau is a replica of Queen Anne desk designs dating to 1710, more than 300 years ago. The desk looks incredibly authentic, you could certainly believe that it’s been used for three centuries.

Scarborough House Distressed CabinetAnother way that distressed furniture gets its aged look is through hand-planing. The furniture makers at Scarborough House are brilliant at this.

This heavily distressed Scarborough House chest cabinet is one of their many hand-planed pieces. Combining a rustic look with beautiful parquetry for visual and textural interest, the sturdy and heavily distressed cabinet is cleverly planed by hand to give that genuinely old look. It’s the kind of technique that takes years to perfect!

Another way that distressed furniture gets its antiqued look is through hand-rubbed finishes. This Ambella Home Bonita king bed has a hand-rubbed antique ebony finish that makes it look far more interesting than if the black finish looked too perfectly “new.”

Ambella Home Bonita Bed Hand Rubbed KingWoodbridge Side Table Distressed

Woodbridge Furniture Company makers are also masters at distressed furniture, with their hand-rubbed and waxed finishes.

This lovely little Woodbridge side table with a dovetail construction drawer is crafted in solid wood and finished with a hand-rubbed distressed cherry veneer. It is not only a very practical side table (I can imagine it as a bedside table too!) but it looks great because the gently aged appeal is very charming.

Whenever you buy distressed furniture, you don’t want the distressing to be too obvious otherwise everyone can spot that bad distressing a mile away and they know it’s a new piece. The best distressed furniture keeps everyone guessing!

Here are more examples of beautifully distressed furniture on our website. Prepare yourself to be seduced!

Client Spotlight: Chelsea House Lisa Kahn Mirror

Our customer Barbara ordered this beautiful Chelsea House Lisa Kahn collection mirror for her bathroom. I think the antiqued glass looks wonderful in her bathroom in Riverwoods, IL.  It really ties in with the marble counters and pretty nickel sconces.

Chelsea House Lisa Kahn mirrorThe iron arched fretworkwall mirror that Barbara chose is from the Chelsea House Lisa Kahn collection and it has an antique gold leaf finish. The mirror is more than 4 feet high and it also comes with an antiqued silver leaf finish.  It brings a sense of elegant grandeur to the room and it pairs perfectly with Barbara’s light fixtures.

Lisa Kahn Chelsea House chandelier Chelsea House is the decorative home accessories label of Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture and the company introduced the Lisa Kahn Collection a few years ago.

Kahn is a renowned interior designer in Naples, Florida, and the head of the Kahn Design Group. She has a fresh and feminine take on traditional, classic and serene interiors and now her signature look is available to everyone, even if we can’t afford Lisa Kahn to design our entire home!

This lovely Lisa Kahn for Chelsea House chandelier  with a sleek nickel finish and delicate lines gives you a sense of her graceful design aesthetic.

Tracery is a popular theme in the Lisa Kahn collection as you can see in this Gothic tracery cocktail table.

The cocktail table would match beautifully with the Lisa Kahn tracery mirror below.

Lisa Kahn Chelse House tracery metal mirrorThe metal Lisa Kahn wall mirror features a glowing gold leaf finish. As it is five feet high, it becomes a decorative focal point any room, as well as being a practical mirror.  Again, the mirror is available with a silver leaf finish. Client Spotlight: Jonathan Charles Marquetry Table

We were greeted with a friendly woof at the door of Erin’s beautiful home in Arlington, VA! Bo, the charming Golden Retriever, had his favorite toy in his mouth and wanted to share it with me. We were there to deliver a gorgeous round center table from the high quality manufacturer, Jonathan Charles, and I think you’ll agree it looks smashing in its new home.

Jonathan Charles round accent table marquetry
The veneered top of the beautiful new Jonathan Charles center table (item JC-429 on our EuroLuxHome.com website) is spectacular with its hand-crafted, intricate design. Each piece of the parquetry inlaid design of intertwined ribbons is carefully hand-applied. Here is a bird’s-eye view of the Jonathan Charles round table top. This will give you a better idea of the intricate detail on the marquetry veneer:

And here is another close-up of the Jonathan Charles center table or accent table, with its lower tier shelf and curvy saber legs. It’s a very striking design, isn’t it?

Jonathan Charles marquetry tableI especially love how Erin arranged this space so that the curved design of the light walnut table echoes the curved design of the handsome vintage Art Deco grandfather clock on the back wall.  The clock was brought back from Germany by family members.

hallway with Jonathan Charles round accent tableThe warm walnut wood tones of both pieces are a perfect complement in the space with the dramatic painted navy walls and bright white molding and trim. It is obvious that Erin has a flair for interior design. Her choice of rugs in both the foreground, and in the living room behind, and even the throw pillows on the sofa, tie all of the colors in the two spaces together and draw the viewer’s eye into her lovely home.

The beautiful piece of art on the wall is part of the family’s growing art collection and was found on a vacation in Louisiana and shipped home. What a warm and inviting entryway space with living room beyond – we’re impressed!

Thanks for letting us share photos of your lovely home, Erin, and thanks to Bo for greeting us so warmly too!

Scarborough House Beautiful Bedrooms

Our Scarborough House bedroom furniture has been really popular lately, Sales have taken off and our customers love their Scarborough House beds – especially the king size beds. Well, when you have such magnificent antique-inspired bed designs and construction, you feel like you’re sleeping in a king’s bed anyway…  so you might as well go for the large and comfy king size!

Scarborough House Canopy King Bed SH-272This is great example of one of our popular Scarborough House beds. The canopy bed is crafted in crotch mahogany with regal brass accents. Scarborough House Fine Furniture creates antique-inspired pieces that are hand-crafted using age-old techniques. The company even makes its own brass hardware to ensure high quality and perfect styling. Scarborough House was founded by an Englishman who was a fine furniture designer and maker. The attention to detail is just as amazing as you’d expect from such a heritage!

Scarborough House Four Poster Bed SH-255Scarborough House is well known for its wood veneers that make each item of furniture a center piece in a room. The fine crotch mahogany on this king size four poster bed shows the level of craftsmanship.  I bet that this bed will become a family heirloom.

Scarborough House King Bed SH-254This is the other Scarborough House king size bed that our customers are loving right now. You can see why. The silhouette is so chic that it will work in any style of bedroom decor, and the handsome crotch mahogany adds a sense of substance and luxury. Scarborough House Chest of Drawers SH-194 We have a large selection of Scarborough House chests of drawers, but this beauty is winning a lot of hearts lately! Crafted in crotch mahogany with brass handles, the chest of drawers is a lovely match for the king beds. The traditional techniques used by the high-quality furniture makers means that the drawers are constructed with good old-fashioned dovetail joinery.  I am curious about how each customer will dress the top of the chest of drawers. A small mirror or vase of flowers on top would be charming. Some small decorative boxes or silver-framed photos would look good too.

Client Spotlight: French Country Sideboard

Eric S. purchased this beautiful French Country sideboard in black finish, and when we saw his address in the Washington D.C. area, we knew we’d be delivering this one! He only lives about 45 minutes away from my grandmother’s house.

French Country Sideboard blackwashThe antique-inspired French Country sideboard (item BG-65 on our website) is beautifully crafted using traditional joinery techniques. The distressed blackwash finish accents the intricate carving on the raised panels and gives the appearance of age. Detailed hardware creates an authentic French Country look too.

IMG_1129

Eric recently moved to the Washington D.C. area and has been busy decorating his lovely home. He proudly gave us a tour of the whole house and said he didn’t mind my snapping photos along the way!

We delivered the new French Country sideboard into the central hall of his home.

The sideboard sits right by the front door and under a gorgeous crystal chandelier. The pretty grey paint creates an elegant impression as you walk in, nicely accented by the design of the rug.
French Country SideboardI couldn’t resist taking a shot showing his grand piano in the muted blue music parlor just off the hallway. The piano finish ties so nicely with the sideboard.

IMG_1131The fantastic view across the back porch is what Eric sees from his home office – I don’t know how he gets anything done with that incredibly relaxing view!

IMG_1133This same view is seen through the floor to ceiling windows at the rear of the kitchen, although my photo is backlit and a little grainy.

IMG_1132

However, my shot of his gorgeous painted white kitchen cabinets with a black finished island and bar stools and black countertops shows how deftly Eric and his wife have used black as a color motif throughout their home. They juxtapose bold, dynamic black with softer grays, blues and greens and crisp, clean white trim.

IMG_1134

I couldn’t resist taking the photo in the dining room as the chandelier had amazing multi-colored crystals in all the colors of the room. I even noticed that the fresh floral arrangement matched the painting above the fireplace!

Every detail is just so nicely considered. I’m sure there will be many happy dinners and gatherings in Eric’s new home in years to come. It is such a welcoming and beautiful space.

Thanks Eric, for giving a glimpse into your traditional-style home with such elegant use of color!

And of course, thanks to Grandma who put us up for the night and took us out for dinner and ice cream to boot! :)

Vintage Summer Style and Antique Furniture

We have just crossed the halfway point of the year (can you believe it?) and it seems like a good time to look back on our best vintage summer style and antique furniture posts from the last four months. Here are our favorite home decor stories to inspire you!

Silver Spoon Chandelier Pendant Light FixtureEarly in the spring we heard that Consumer Reports magazine would feature one of our upcycled vintage chandeliers in their Kitchen Planning and Buying Guide.

We were delighted as our spoondeliers and pretty vintage teacup and spoon chandeliers are very popular and they are made by an artisan right here in the USA.

Read the whole Silver Spoon Chandelier in Consumer Reports story with photos from client homes.

Antique Chairs and TableIt’s always a joy to write our client spotlights about the new and antique furniture our customers bought from us and how great it looks in their homes. This one really caught our attention though, with antique French Renaissance chairs, the famous Aztec calendar stone and the singer Axl Rose, of the band Guns N’ Roses! To top it off, our client Bernard, who told us this great story, also lives in Hawaii with fantastic views.

Art Deco Buffet 18-33We recently received a container of antique furniture from France that included some amazing Art Deco buffets. We chose these buffets and sideboards because we love the look of Art Deco furniture and the pieces are exceptional.

They all have the spirited glamor and glitz of the Art Deco era, as well as the sophistication and craftsmanship that we expect from French furniture makers of the 1930s.

So I wrote a post about Classic Art Deco Style using these Art Deco buffets as examples to point up the features of this period of furniture. I’d love to hear if you enjoy this style as much as we do!

Jonathan Charles Home Office FurnitureWhen everyone was busy with spring cleaning and tax time (yay – that’s behind us for another year!) I wrote a series of blog posts about beautiful home office decor.

It was fun to think about how to create an enjoyable home office, from picking the perfect desk to choosing home office accents.

Top Grain Leather Sofa Antique LookI also got lucky and picked up some great tips about different types of leather and leather furniture care from one of the leather furniture makers that we work with.

They are a small family business and so they have time to chat and correspond with me and give me info and advice. So I passed that on to our blog readers in my post about Top-Grain vs. Split-Grain Leather and Leather Furniture Care. Read that and you’ll know how to take care of your favorite leather furniture. You’d be surprised at some of the mistakes people make!

mediterraneanflowerpotMy final favorite blog post recently was inspired by Mother’s Day! I made up a bunch of flower pots and hanging baskets for my mom and that made me think about Great Ways to Decorate the Garden with Flower Pots.

I hope you enjoy browsing through my favorite vintage style and antique furniture blog posts as much as I enjoy sharing them with you!

Top-Grain vs. Split-Grain Leather and Leather Furniture Care

AT-4 Leather Chesterfield SetteeIn my recent customer spotlight about interior designer Charity and the new antiqued leather settee she bought from us,  I mentioned that leather sofas, chairs, stools and benches are among our top sellers.

One of the leather furniture makers that we work with is a small family business, and they gave me some great info about the different types of leather and the care of leather.Top Grain cream leather sofa

My first lesson was about the difference between top-grain and split-grain leather. Full-grain leather is the natural whole hide, but that whole hide is usually split into layers for making furniture upholstery. (Think of it like peeling two slices of bread apart!)
Both cuts of leather are true 100% leather and each one is wonderful for different purposes, looks, type of furniture and price points.

Red Leather Cloister counter stoolThe top-grain is the cut from the hair side of the leather. It is the most common type of leather used in high-end leather products as it is smooth and pliable.
The traditional top-grain leather look is shiny and smooth and soft to the touch, with natural color and texture variations.  Many of our sofas and chairs are top-grain leather.

The split-grain is from the flesh side. It is a tougher and thicker cut of leather and it is usually at a slightly lower price point. After the split is made, this layer of leather has a fuzzy suede look on both sides and it is light in color. Then it is finished to give it the look and feel of top-grain leather. Usually this includes applying color and a clear protective top coat.

Leather Furniture Care

Leather is porous and it’s made up of around 12-14% water which keeps it so luxuriously supple. But even though it is such a sturdy and timeless upholstery material, you do need to avoid things that will dry the leather out. For example, it’s best to keep it away from a heater or from direct sun right beneath a window.

Top Grain Leather sofa hand-made in USATo clean leather furniture, only use a water based leather cleaner. Before my leather lesson from the furniture makers, I didn’t know how bad the leather conditioners are that you can buy in supermarkets and chain stores. I never thought about it for leather, but it is just like all of those furniture sprays that are also bad for your furniture and create a waxy build-up.

New Madison Leather Club ChairMy leather expert said never to use regular household products to clean and care for leather. This includes products containing oils, waxes or silicones, as they dry out the leather big time! Most “conditioners” contain waxes or oils while furniture polish contains silicones. These all ruin the leather finish. Car cleaners with oils or waxes can leave residue that acts like a magnet to dirt, creating a build-up and finally cracking of the leather. Chemicals in many leather wipes also destroy the finish and dry out the hide so it peels.

Baby wipes are terrible for leather too as is dishwashing liquid as it has a high salt content and will ruin your finish. What about Saddle Soap? That should be OK, right? Wrong! The finish on beautiful leather furniture is not the same as saddle leather, so keep the saddle soap in the stable!

Top Grain Leather Sofa Antique LookAfter cleaning with a water based leather cleaner and nothing else, treat the leather furniture with a good water based leather protector. This creates a protective barrier, preventing dirt and stains from soaking into the leather.

Regularly wiping the leather with a damp cloth helps to clean dirt and body oils from the furniture in addition to helping rehydrate the leather – it’s nature’s own moisturizer! Take care of your top-grain or split-grain leather furniture and it will be look handsome and feel great for years!

Client Spotlight: Georgian Desk in Historic Charleston House

House in Downtown historic CharlestonOur Georgian-style desk looked perfectly at home in our customer’s historic Charleston house.  I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed the trip!

Every once in a while, Greg and I love to skip out of town and head for Charleston as it is only a two-hour drive. I greatly enjoy taking a stroll around the Battery, smelling the salt air and admiring the gorgeous historic homes. So when Susan purchased a handsome antique-inspired desk from us on Houzz, we knew we’d make this delivery!

Susan and her family moved to Charleston several years ago, but just purchased this fantastic home in the Downtown historic district a few months ago.

Flame Mahogany Partners Desk Georgian Style Oval

This is the very grand new oval partners desk that Susan ordered from us from our selection of new and antique desks. The antique-inspired Georgian-style desk is six feet long and what an impressive six feet it is! The oval desk is crafted in rich flame mahogany with banded inlay for extra decorative effect. Three hand-tooled leather panels on the oval top, fluted detail on the pillars and classic old-fashioned handles give this elegant desk tons of traditional appeal. If we have to be practical :-) there’s lots of drawer space too!

Antique inspired desk in historic homeSusan’s home dates to 1852 but the prior owners had already done most of the renovations. The hardwood floors were still being finished in the front entry hall as we came in, but when we set the Georgian-style oval partner’s desk (Item BG-230) in place in her husband’s office, that room was finally complete!

I just loved seeing how the whole room tied together – from the original molding around the doors and the incredible 10 foot tall pocket door, to the classic brass chandelier light fixture and patterned Oriental rug. The leather-topped desk with flame-mahogany veneer looked quite at home in this stately Charlestonian mansion. If only the walls could tell stories!

We headed back to Newberry after a delicious lunch of shrimp and grits, a Charlestonian specialty!

Client Spotlight: Antiqued Leather Settee

Our interior designer customer Charity bought a new antiqued leather settee from us. As it’s one of our most popular leather settees, we wanted to show you how great it looks in its new home: A Chicago high-rise office. Old meets new with wonderful results!AT-4 Leather Chesterfield SetteeThis handsome new leather settee is one of our top sellers. The tufted button back is typical of traditional Chesterfield sofas and it is created with lots of hand-crafted elements by a family-owned company. (It’s item AT-4 on our website.) The upholstery is a beautiful antiqued saddle leather that looks just like an old football or an old horse saddle. You can see how the broken-in leather is accented by the hand-applied nailhead trim and the rich luster of the hand-stained wood legs. For a modern safety touch, the settee is made with high density fire-retardant foam,

Antiqued Leather Settee

As Charity is an interior designer, she obviously saw the style, quality and superb attention to detail in the antiqued leather settee.  She ordered it for her client in the Financial Services industry. Here it is in her client’s high rise office building in Chicago. The building had very stringent requirements for delivery, but our white glove carrier, Sun Delivery, made it happen!

AT-7 Leather Club Chair DistreI have to show off a couple of other pieces made by the same small family-owned company. These are also very popular with our customers. The first is this comfy new leather club chair, which would pair very nicely with the leather settee. Sturdily crafted with a solid wood frame, the Madison accent chair also boasts a luxurious hand-applied nailhead trim to highlight the curved shape.

Manchester Antique Saddle Leather Settee AT66As an alternative to the more relaxed Chesterfield style settee, this elegant Manchester Antique Saddle Leather settee has been wowing our customers! In addition to our satisfied customers who have bought it, an incredible 271 people so far have saved it to their Houzz Ideabook.

Everyone loves it, probably because of the graceful lines and high-quality craftsmanship. It’s perfect for an entryway or as seating in your dining room or living room.

Thank you Charity for sending us the photo of the settee in your client’s office. We hope that they love the blend of styles as much as we do. An antiqued leather settee in a modern office will always make a great impression!
