Customer’s Newberry Cam Davis Mansion and Antiques in Magazine

One of our most popular customer spotlights gave a tour inside Tamra’s Classic Newberry Mansion, complete with antique furniture purchased from us at EuroLuxHome.com.  So, we were delighted to come across a feature about Tamra’s home in Columbia Living Magazine: The Summer House. The article talked about some of the furniture Tamra purchased from us and we found out some new facts about Tamra’s house. Here is the update!

This is Tamra’s beautiful Greco-Roman mansion in Downtown Newberry, SC. It is so splendid it is hard to believe that at one time the house was at risk of being torn down because it was in such poor repair. Tamra and previous owners have put a lot of work into restoring it to its original glory when it was built in the 1890s!  Outside of Newberry House

According to the Columbia Living Magazine article, the house was originally owned by John Harrison “Hack” Summer, hence the name “The Summer House.”  It was built by Newberry contractor C. C. Davis, more often known as Cam Davis. A native of North Carolina, Cam Davis came to Newberry in 1884 to build the Newberry Cotton Mill. He went on to build many well-known residences, public buildings and churches in Newberry between 1884 and 1916. Pair of antique Mechelen buffetsWe discovered from the magazine article that The Summer House was designed by a 16-year-old. It’s amazing to think that such a young man could design this amazing neoclassical mansion! Craftsmen worked on the house in Newberry during the winter because in the summer they were working on the famous Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. The magazine article drew attention to the pair of antique Mechelen buffets flanking the entryway. These are two of the pieces Tamra bought from us.

Antique Mechelen Buffet

The article praised the heavily-carved cabinets’ “beautiful woodwork and stained glass insets.” The carving and stained glass are typical of Mechelen furniture, as you can see in my blog post What is Mechelen Style Antique Furniture?

Antique French Table Chairs dining room

The formal dining room also received attention in the article, which made us happy as Tamra bought the French Country Louis XV extending refectory table in walnut from us, as well as two sets of antique French Hunting chairs dating to the 1880s. The article reads: One of their favorite rooms in the home is the formal dining room. “We’re not finished in this space, but we’ve got the parquet French walnut table with the French thrones as a centerpiece. There is really beautiful woodwork on the queens,” Tamra said.

It’s wonderful to find out more about this beautiful house that Tamra has decorated so elegantly. You can read the full Columbia Living Magazine article here and also see more photos of the room interiors and antique furniture in my original blog post: Antique French Furniture in Classic Newberry Mansion.

Client Spotlight: Antique Furniture in Victorian Villa

Pella Victorian VillaWe were pretty thrilled when Stan V. in Pella, IA, bought some antique furniture from us to furnish a historical house. The Pella Victorian Villa was built in 1871 and as an Iowa historic site it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Right now this grand villa is being renovated so it is not open for tours, but thanks to the internet (which never needs renovations!) you can still see photos of the rooms in the Pella Victorian Villa online virtual tour.

This is a photo of the dining room in the Pella Victorian Villa.

dining_room-victorian-villa

You can see the handsome antique French Hunting chairs and a large antique table that came from us at EuroLuxHome.com. Later we shipped another set of chairs and another table to the villa so we look forward to seeing how those are featured in the old house.

The house was built by John Voorhees for his family, and there is an interesting story about the bricks. They were all made in a kiln on the property with clay from local clay pits and because the mortar was the same color as the bricks the builders painted white lines on the mortar between each brick. What a painstaking task that must have been! But they did a good job of it because the bricks and the mortar are still in great condition.

Apparently the house cost about $10,000 to $13,000 to build and this was double the amount Mr. Voorhees intended to pay. Tell us about it! Houses always cost more than we expect, don’t they? (We have our own stories about our 1920s vintage bungalow renovation.)

Stan and Alma purchased the house in 2011 with the aim of preserving it and they decorated it with period pieces like the antique furniture that they bought from us.

The Pella Historical Village looks like a beautiful place to go visit, especially if you want to explore the village’s Dutch Heritage.

Pella Historical Museum Tulip TIme

Pella Historical Museum at Tulip Time

Attractions include the Scholte House Museum, built in 1848 and filled with antiques, and the Vermeer Windmill – an authentic working Dutch mill.  The annual Tulip Time tulip festival also looks like a lot of fun!

We’ll revisit the Pella Victorian Villa when the renovations are complete so we can see how our antique furniture looks in the ‘new’ old house! Meanwhile, you can see our antique furniture in another historic house in our spotlight on the Johnny Cash Boyhood home.

Antique French Furniture in Classic Newberry Mansion

Today I have some photos of antique French furniture and Mechelen buffets that are a real treat to see in our customer Tamra’s classic but eclectic home. The outside of her Greco-Roman mansion in Newberry, SC, is gorgeous too! Outside of Newberry House

You may think the dining room looks a little familiar as this home used to be owned by our good customers, Roger and Peggy. S. They recently sold their elegant 1890s home, built when Newberry was a booming textile mill town at the turn of the century, to a wonderful new caretaker – Tamra!

Antique French Table Chairs dining room

Roger and Peggy left the French Country sideboard in place in the dining room because it fit so well on that wall under the stained glass windows and they didn’t have a spot large enough for it in their new home. Tamra chose a 1930s French Country Louis XV refectory table in walnut which is super-useful as it extends to 9.5 feet long – great for a dinner party! She also bought two sets of Hunting chairs dating to the 1880s in slightly different color oak finishes in order to mix things up.

French Antique Dining Room

Tamra also had her eye on an antique Hunting Buffet for the dining room. The original glass had been damaged on this handsome oak heavily carved Hunting Buffet dating to 1880, so we had replaced it with chicken wire to give a slightly rustic feel to the piece.

Antique French Hunting buffet

It works great in Tamra’s new dining room as there is an interesting juxtaposition of formality with the classic fireplace mantel, moldings, and crystal chandelier and the touch of rustic country with the less formal French Country pieces mixed with the chicken wire in the Hunting buffet.

This close-up of the antique French Hunting buffet shows more detail of the carved oak and the heraldic crest. There’s plenty of space for Tamra to store all the dishes and stemware and silver that she’ll need to feed everyone gathered around the large table!

Tamra also fell in love with another heavily carved Hunting Buffet for the hallway at the base of her stairs. Antique French Carved Hunting Buffet

Tamra has a wonderful eclectic touch and paired antique Chinese arm chairs from her husband’s travels next to the antique French buffet. The flamboyant carvings on the oak buffet portray mythical griffins, oak leaves, fruits, and birds (right down to their feathery details!) The 1880 French buffet boasts its original wavy glass doors.

Antique French Hunting Buffet

As we were delivering Tamra’s furniture, she pointed out that she was still looking for a pair of interesting pieces to go on either side of the huge front door in the front hall. I knew exactly what would fit the bill! I recommended a matched pair of narrow antique Mechelen buffets which still have their original stained glass even though they are a century old.

Antique Mechelen buffet stained glass

This shot of the stained glass shows just how intricate it is, surrounded by oak carvings. The Flemish Mechelen style was a Belgian interpretation of the French Hunting style, so I knew these pieces would work well with the other antique furniture Tamra bought from us.

Antique Mechelen Buffet

Here is one buffet in place. The stained glass catches the light beautifully as it streams through the sidelights on either side of the massive front door.
Pair of antique Mechelen buffetsAnd this is the pair of Mechelen buffets creating a magnificent entrance. The lovely dining room and the whole house is a reflection of Tamra herself – very classy yet down-to-earth and fun! Welcome to Newberry, Tamra – we’re glad you’re here!

Client Spotlight: French Antique Hunting Chairs

We enjoyed hearing the story Howard C. from Oceanside, NY, told us about why he bought a set of antique Hunting chairs from us.

Set of French antique Hunting chairsThe set of 6 antique Hunting chairs in question date to the year 1880 and they were crafted in France. This very nice old set of oak dining chairs is intricately and heavily carved in the traditional French Hunting style.

Antique Hunting Chair
As you can see, the seat backs are carved with ivy leaves, and the chairs are adorned with barley twists and beautifully carved legs and stretchers. The lavish decorative detail on the antique Hunting chairs is enhanced by the authentic aged patina of the wood.

Antique Hunting Chair Dining Room The chairs caught Howard’s eye because he said his parents had a nearly identical set of dining chairs as he was growing up. Remembering those chairs, Howard knew he had to have this set when he found them on our EuroLuxAntiques.com website! Don’t they look terrific in his dining room?

French Antique Hunting Chairs in our client's dining room

Howard’s mom still has the pair of end chairs from her set. She is going to swap him that pair for the pair of end chairs pictured in the photo. The deep and rich red walls in this dining room make the perfect accent for the chairs and their aged oak patina. As I’ve said in other client spotlights with red dining rooms, red is a classic decor choice for dining rooms as it stimulates both the appetite and the conversation! Howard’s wife wasn’t too sure if the antique Hunting chairs would be right for the table, but he convinced her and she absolutely loves them now too!

Howard also told us that when the chairs arrived, they were the most well-packed item he’s ever received. We are pleased to hear that because we take great care with our shipping and pride ourselves on it. (We offer free shipping in the contiguous 48 United States and some parts of Canada, but free doesn’t mean that we cut any corners.) It was a pleasure working with Howard!

Home Decor Trends: Nailhead Trim

Nailhead trim is yet another traditional design detail that is getting a lot of attention in this year’s lists of decor trends! A Better Homes and Gardens magazine article called What We Want in Our Homes: 2014 highlighted nailhead trim. They said: “It’s an ideal trend to embrace for larger investment pieces, such as upholstered chairs and sofas, because it’s timeless.”

Even though nailhead trim is especially fashionable now it is never really out of fashion, so you don’t have to worry about it looking dated in a few years. Nailhead trim is a classic detail that goes back 400 years.Antique French Hunting chairs

Nailheads were a practical way for European craftsmen to attach fabric or leather to the wooden furniture frame. For example, we’ve got this very rare set of antique French Hunting chairs from 1880 in the gallery. We have never seen embossed leather on a set of Hunting chairs before. But you can see that the beautifully embossed leather panels on the seat and back are attached to the ornately carved oak chair frames by attractive nailheads.

Let’s have a look at some of the other nailhead trim furniture in our gallery, whether traditional or more contemporary or transitional in design!

Nailhead trim on leather sofaThis new Chesterfield leather daybed is hand-made to order in the USA by an American company we work with. As you can see, the top grain leather upholstery is accented by a beautiful nailhead trim that gives it a traditional feel. Each brass nail is hand-driven on this nicely crafted piece. Like all the other custom-made in the USA leather sofas from that company, the daybed is available in many leather colors.

Red Leather dining chair nailhead trimThe decorative nails on these newly crafted Cloister style leather dining chairs are also applied by hand. The nailhead trim serves to accent the sleek lines of the wine red leather panels. These Cloister style chairs remind me of medieval castles and churches!

It’s a specialist craft to apply the nails because they have to be perfectly spaced and you have to get it right first time to avoid damaging the upholstery. The small, family-owned company that makes these chairs employs craftsmen who know how to drive the nails by hand, of course.

Leather stool with nailhead trimBut if you are are trying to do a DIY project and you don’t have the carpentry or upholstery skills, then I know that you can buy faux nailhead trim by the yard. I would not recommend doing that to antique or high-quality furniture! Also, the faux nailhead doesn’t look as good as the real thing because you can see the strips joining the mock nails. But it might be a fun way to freshen up a cheaper piece of furniture.

This new leather stool certainly does NOT rely on faux nailhead by the yard! It is hand-crafted by Woodbridge Furniture Company and I wanted to show it to you because the nailhead trim is so integral to the design. The bold nails outline the sculptural oval back, almost acting as jewelry for the furniture.

Nailhead trim on Ambella Home SideboardIf you need any more convincing that nailhead trim works across many styles of furniture, this fabulous Ambella Home sideboard from the Manhattan collection should do the trick. The angular demi-lune shaped sideboard boasts white leather-look upholstery on the doors, studded with nickel nailheads. Polished nickel ring door handles match the nailheads. The result is classic, high-end, and sophisticated, but with a little edge! The Ambella Home Manhattan collection also includes beds, dining chairs, and other furniture with this design, so ask us about it if you love the look as much as we do!

Client Spotlight: Victorian Restoration Dining Room

We know many of our clients are working on Victorian restorations and it’s wonderful to see how they bring their homes back to their original style and beauty. Here’s a case in point.

Our client Sal S. in New York is restoring a beautiful Victorian home that had been neglected through the years. He’s returning her to her former glory and doing a terrific job of it. Sal knows his own tastes but he is working with an interior designer to help tie it all together. He is a busy entrepreneur so he needs some help to get all the work done that goes into a tackling a Victorian restoration.

Sal’s designer found our EuroLuxAntiques.com website and sent him down to check out our gallery. He actually took a road trip from New York with his mother to come visit us in person in Newberry, South Carolina. He couldn’t make a decision between all of the Renaissance buffets we had in stock!

Antique Renaissance Buffet for our client's Victorian Restoration DIning Room

He ended up picking out a wonderful antique Renaissance Buffet in walnut wood. The antique French buffet is heavily carved with an acorn motif symbolizing strength, power, and endurance. How fitting! Anyone involved with a Victorian restoration needs endurance, and any entrepreneur like Sal is bound to be gifted with the qualities of strength and power! The buffet dates to 1900 and it is 9 feet tall with an ornate pediment, crown molding, and lovely brass handles on the two drawers.

10 Hunting Chairs for our client's Victorian Restoration dining room

Sal also selected this set of 10 beautifully upholstered Hunting chairs. The antique French chairs date to 1880 with fantastic carvings of leaves and grapes. Carved in oak with chunky barley twists, they are pretty heavy. Each chair weighs nearly 17 pounds! The physical weight is nicely balanced though by the visual lightness in the pierced splat. The floral tapestry upholstery works well with the French Hunting style frame and also fits nicely with the style of Sal’s Victorian restoration dining room.

Antique server or sideboard for our client's Victorian Restoration house

Sal finished his antiques shopping trip by choosing this gorgeous Renaissance style server in walnut with handsome grey-green marble. The 1900 French server or sideboard features rich carvings of leaves, crests, and rope, as well as turned spindles. The plate rail sits above the 4-foot-long veined marble top.

SalStrazzaeri Here’s how the buffet and chairs look in Sal’s Victorian restoration dining room. It isn’t spectacular? I love the decorated ceiling, and how about those elegant drapes? The aged patina of the walnut and oak looks wonderful against the pale green wallpapers. It all fits delightfully into the Victorian style. Obviously Sal took as much care in choosing the decor accents as he did in selecting the furniture from us. All of the wallpaper and curtains are new and I believe that is an antique chandelier hanging above the table.

The only thing this Victorian restoration dining room needs now is a dinner party to celebrate its return to its original grace and style. I suspect Sal might have taken care of that already!

Client Spotlight: Antique Hunting Thrones & Brittany Style Furniture

Our very first advertisement for the opening of EuroLuxAntiques.com 2004We will always have a soft spot in our hearts for Gene and Lyn, as we met Gene on the very first day that we opened our doors back in 2004. Our first advertisement that we ran in our local Lake Murray Magazine caught Gene’s attention – here it is with the tag line Your New Connection to the Olde World! When I dug this ad up from our archives, I realized that the pair of antique Hunting Thrones that Gene and Lyn later purchased were featured in that debut ad!

Since then, we’ve changed our logo, our name (from EuroLux Imports to EuroLux Antiques),and even our location (from outside Newberry to Downtown Newberry on Main Street). But we still specialize in beautiful, hand-selected European antique furniture.

Antique Hunting Thrones in the sun porchLyn was busy on our opening day, but Gene brought her back soon afterwards as he knew she would enjoy browsing in our gallery. It was filled to the brim with the spoils of our very first imported container. Those fantastic antique Hunting Thrones would soon find a new home on Gene and Lyn’s sun porch overlooking the lake, followed soon afterwards by an elegantly carved antique Brittany Bench. You can see the antique Hunting Thrones with their marvelous barley twists and carvings here on their sun porch, along with the Brittany Bench displaying that lovely vase of flowers.

Antique French Brittany Bench. EuroLuxAntiques.comHere’s a close-up of the Brittany Bench, which is very typical of our Brittany style furniture. It features ship wheel carvings to honor the maritime history of the Brittany region, and carvings of French country folk. I still remember that Gene and Lyn opened a bottle of delicious wine when we delivered the thrones, and insisted that we have a few glasses to help them celebrate their “new” acquisitions! That afternoon we discovered that we had quite a bit in common with Gene and Lyn. They had started their marriage as newlyweds in Europe, just as we had. They told us stories of Gene’s teaching stint in Scotland, and we made them laugh with stories of our adventures living in Germany. We laughed and talked for hours and it turned into the beginning of a wonderful friendship!

Antique French Hunting Buffet displaying our client's collection of antique pewter. EuroLuxAntiques.comOver the years, Gene and Lyn have continued to find “new” antique pieces at EuroLux Antiques for their handsome home, often as a way to celebrate a birthday or an anniversary. A large and heavily-carved antique Hunting Buffet holds Lyn’s collection of antique and vintage pewter in the great room. The pewter looks superb against the antique wood of the carved buffet, so beautifully mellowed with age.

Antique French Hunting Chairs in our client's great room with a Hunting Buffet. EuroLuxAntiques.comGene and Lyn’s great room is an open concept area connecting the kitchen with a dining area and living room. A set of antique French Hunting chairs was added too, as you can see in the great room around the marble table.

Antique Brittany bedroom suite in our client's home. EuroLuxAntiques.comLyn fell in love with a very high-quality antique Brittany bedroom suite, including a 3-door armoire, bed, and nightstand. I love the red floral bedspread with the dark chestnut wood – it just adds to the French provincial feel of their lovely bedroom.  If you admire this look as much as I do, we have an awesome Brittany Bed and 3-Door Armoire that just came into the gallery, and some wonderful Brittany chairs too.

Gene and Lyn are both retired and keep very busy schedules, but we’re always happy to see them when the wind blows them through our doors here in Newberry!

Client Spotlight: Johnson City, TN

Antique French furniture in the Hunting style is one of our specialties here at EuroLuxAntiques.com. So when a customer buys several antique French Hunting chairs and thrones – plus an Art Deco buffet and a Spanish Renaissance table – it’s lovely to see how they incorporate these treasures into their home. When we made a personal delivery to Robert and Liz in Johnson City, Tennessee, we had the chance to do just that!

Client Spotlight: Johnson City TN by EuroLuxAntiques.comRobert and Liz live in a wonderful historic home in Johnson City that was on the city’s tour of homes last year. They have quite a few antiques in their home, but it’s a beautiful house from the outside too. I could relax on that shady veranda all day!
Antique French Hunting Chairs & Thrones, vintage Spanish Renaissance table, Art Deco buffet from EuroLuxAntiques.com
They purchased from us a 1950s Spanish Renaissance table in oak, a set of six oak antique French Hunting chairs (circa. 1890) and a pair of French Hunting Thrones, also in oak, dating to 1880. The whole dining room looks magnificent. Robert and Liz also bought a pretty 1920s German Art Deco buffet.

French Hunting thrones at the head of the table - what a great dining room! EuroLuxAntiques.comHere’s another photo of one of the larger French Hunting thrones. The two thrones are placed at the head of the table to seat the host and hostess, or perhaps the thrones are reserved for the guests of honor?

The smaller antique French Hunting chairs line the sides of the table. This shot really shows the amazing carving on the stately thrones, complete with barley twists.

Art Deco buffet completes the dining room from EuroLuxAntiques.comThe 1920s German Art Deco buffet is also crafted from oak. As you can see, there is plenty of space to store all their china, silver, and table linens for when guests come to dine. I love how well the Art Deco buffet blends with the older antique French Hunting style furniture.

We mostly use professional companies that specialize in moving antique furniture to deliver EuroLux Antiques purchases to our customers, but sometimes Greg and I take time out of the gallery to hit the road and deliver antiques ourselves. I’m so glad we did this one personally. It was wonderful to meet Robert and Liz and to see their delightful home!
