Rare Goumain Painted St Eustace Antique French Buffet

It’s exciting for us to tell you about this rare antique French buffet that we just had in stock. It’s the rarest antique buffet that we have ever sold! Here’s a picture of the painted buffet so you can see the full magnificence:

Goumain Antique French Buffet

Signed Goumain antique furnitureThe piece is signed by Goumain on the buffet as well as on the original sculptures, and dated to 1919.

The Maison Goumain Frères was one of the businesses of Emile Guimet, a wealthy French industrialist at the end of the 19th century. He is most famous as the founder of the Musée Guimet in Paris in 1889, a museum of the history of oriental religions and folk traditions. A large part of the museum collections is from the excavations of Antinoë, a city in middle Egypt, carried out by the archaeologist Albert Gayet during 20 years of excavations beginning in 1895.

Antique French Goumain Buffet

The Goumain Brothers specialized in furniture for museums as well as wealthy collectors. Pieces were designed to safely hold precious collections, often with many drawers, which protected the items from light.

St Eustace painting on antique buffet

The painting shows the story of Saint Eustace, a Christian martyr and soldier saint from the 2nd century AD in Rome, Italy. A Roman general called Placidus was hunting in the woods one day when he encountered a large stag with a crucifix lodged in his antlers and he heard the voice of God commanding him to become a Christian. He immediately converted himself, his wife and his two sons to Christianity and took the name of Eustace.

Painted antique French buffet St Eustace

Carved statue antique buffetSt. Eustace then suffered many trials and tribulations along the lines of Job from the Old Testament, including losing his home (the castle seen in the painting) and all of his wealth. He even thought he had lost his wife and sons for a period of time. Although he suffered, he remained constant in his faith and realized that God was testing him.

Eventually he was reunited with his wife and sons, although the entire family was later martyred when they refused to worship the Roman Gods when commanded by Emperor Trajan. The image of Saint Eustace kneeling before a stag became a popular subject in medieval religious art.

St Eustace painting Canterbury Cathedral
Interestingly, the first recorded relics of Saint Eustace were in an altar in the royal Basilica of St Denis, the first Gothic Cathedral ever built in Europe.  (We visited the cathedral in our blog post on our recent antiques buying trip in France.)

There is a large painting in Canterbury Cathedral in England featuring Saint Eustace dating to 1480 (shown left) and Greg believes it may well be the basis of the painting on this piece. Here is a close-up:

St Eustace Canterbury
Hand-Painted antique French buffetSaint Eustace is known as the patron saint of hunters, firefighters, and anyone facing adversity. An interesting tidbit is that Saint Eustace is the reference in the Jägermeister logo of a cross in between a stag’s horns, as the liquor was marketed as the drink of choice for German hunters.

He is also the patron saint of Madrid, Spain. The saint is also featured in the stained glass windows in the Cathedral of Chartres.

It is interesting to conjecture that this buffet was perhaps commissioned for a wealthy patron whose personal saint was Saint Eustace. The buffet not only held his personal material treasures, it served as a reminder that his true “wealth” was in the constancy of his own Christian faith.

We loved finding this very rare antique French buffet by the Goumain Brothers. Now it has  gone to a new home where I’m sure this rare treasure will be enjoyed every day!

French Country Farmhouse Style: Elegant Comfort

The timeless French Country Farmhouse style of furniture is rich in nostalgia, and it is one of the most popular styles in our EuroLuxHome.com online store. Whether our customers choose genuine antique French Country Farmhouse furniture imported from France or newly crafted pieces inspired by the style, they love the refined but comfortable look!

As the name suggests, there is a rustic element to French Country Farmhouse style that celebrates the natural beauty of rural France. This design style places a great emphasis on traditional craftsmanship, natural materials and a sense of harmony and balance.

Imagine walking into a charming old French farmhouse deep in the hills of a wine region or one surrounded by fields of golden corn. The kind of decor and furnishings you might see are exactly the kind we expect of this design style.

You might see a large wooden table in the kitchen, possibly crafted in pine or another light or medium wood. Simple furniture features graceful lines and a slightly weathered look, or you will see cabinets with a distressed paint finish.

Things are not too matchy matchy, no matched sets of furniture, yet everything works together. The furniture and accessories have the look of being collected over the years, combining family heirlooms with newer pieces.

Everything is effortless, nothing is trying too hard to impress. Nothing is shiny or too crisp and perfect. These homes look lived in and you know that the people living there are very happy and content indeed!

We have a lot of new, vintage and antique French Country Farmhouse pieces in our online EuroLuxHome.com furniture and home accents store and shipping is always free. For example, this fine walnut vintage French Country sideboard hits all the style points!

Vintage French Country Sideboard Chairs with a ladder back are also ideal for this look, and chairs and benches often feature woven rush or rattan seats. These new French Country dining chairs in our store have intricate carvings in the walnut wood and hand-woven rattan seats.

French Country dining chairLayered textures with rustic and distressed finishes add a great deal to the effect, and layered fabrics such as gingham and florals in varying scales also add to the effortless look. Toile de Jouy is a classic for French Country Farmhouse linens and other soft furnishings.

French Heritage French Country Louis XVI bedChickens and roosters and other farmyard animals are a popular motif, as seen on this hand-woven wool Aubusson throw pillow!

Rooster Aubusson Throw Pillow HandwovenIn addition to French Country Farmhouse antique furniture and newly crafted pieces, we are pleased to stock all kinds of vintage and new home accessories that look perfect with this style of decor.

Earlier this year I mentioned that Farmhouse style is a leading decor trend right now and I am not surprised! It is more than just a fleeting fashion. There is a timeless, serene and nurturing quality to this interior design look that is comforting in our rapidly changing and stressful times!

Client Spotlight: Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed

Deliver Antique Brittany BedGreg and I just delivered a French antique Brittany buffet and Brittany bed to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL.

It was one of our slowest deliveries because we had to make a bunch of trips up and down the elevator as May lives on the 14th floor.

But what a spectacular view she has from every room in her lovely home, which is filled with European antiques!

May retired to Pensacola Beach from Connecticut, but in her corporate life, she traveled frequently to Europe.

Pensacola ViewThat is how she fell in love with European interior design, and Paris is her very favorite place to be.

May bought a couple of pieces of furniture from EuroLuxHome.com. The first was an 1880 French Brittany antique bed.

French Antique Brittany Bed

The antique Brittany bed is heavily carved in chestnut wood, with wonderful scenes in traditional Brittany style. The top of the headboard is carved with a man and women relaxing beneath a windmill. You can almost see the sails turning on the windmill because the carving is so detailed! The footboard panel depicts merry country villagers celebrating. Floral carvings and ship wheels also adorn the bed. You can see close-ups of similar carvings in the antique French Brittany furniture currently for sale on our website.

Antique French Brittany Buffet

The antique French Brittany style buffet also dates to 1880 and it is also elaborately hand-carved with scenes of rural life. Figures of a man and woman act as support columns and add a whimsical touch to this beautiful antique buffet.

French Antique Brittany Buffet

These French country folk know how to enjoy themselves! Here they gather round a wine barrel to enjoy themselves after a long day working in the fields!  May contacted me to ask if we could have the Brittany buffet altered to accommodate a TV for viewing in her bedroom.

Converted Antique Brittany Buffet

We had a local restoration company remove the central support in between the left and center upper doors, and attach it to the end of the left door. They did a wonderful job.

The Brittany buffet and bed looked fantastic in May’s bedroom and they now enjoy a fantastic view of the ocean and bay. Bo, May’s charming whippet, was very helpful during the whole delivery. I wish I had taken a photo of him! He was such a pretty dog.

Then we left to drive on to New Orleans… More about that in another blog post! For now, thanks to May for letting us share her stunning views and photos of the antique Brittany bed and buffet in her home.

Renaissance Buffet in Historic South Carolina Home

Historic House South CarolinaWe delivered a handsome oak Renaissance buffet to a lovely couple who live nearby in Winnsboro, SC.  Deborah and David own a gorgeous historic home. This is a photo of the house in 1810 when it was completed. (Thanks to the South Carolina Department of Archives and History for that nostalgic and rather wintry photo!)

And here is the house today in a much more green and summery time:

South Carolina Historic Home Picture

Deborah and David first found us online, but were excited to discover that we’re only about an hour away from their home in Winnsboro, SC.  Deborah is from the area and moved back home when her mother became ill a few years ago. She lovingly cared for her mother until she passed recently. We were so sorry to hear of her loss, but we understand that Deborah has now thrown herself into restoring their wonderful old home.

Antique French Renaissance BuffetDavid is also now retired and was busy at work on the back porch when we arrived to deliver the beautiful Renaissance buffet.

The oak Renaissance buffet dates to 1900 with carved fabric swags and florals on the upper cabinet doors. The lower doors of the antique Renaissance Henry II buffet hutch are equally well ornamented with diamond medallions surrounded by foliage. In addition to a spacious serving area, the buffet has a full-length plate rack and drawers for silverware.

Deborah and David have already done a great amount of work on their home, including leveling the gorgeous original wood floors. Deborah thought the Renaissance buffet would look wonderful in the dining room and I have to agree!

Antique French Renaissance Buffet

There was so much natural light streaming in through the big windows, that it is somewhat hard to see the color tones in the photos, but the buffet worked very well with the dining table and chairs and the corner cabinet. I loved the beautiful antique chandelier Deborah found to go over the dining room table!

Antique French Buffet in Dining room

The entrance hallway of Deborah and David’s home features a large gilded chandelier that we found at an antique market in France. It is a perfect fit for the space and I love the decorative molding on the ceiling around the cap. The other antique pieces in the hallway and the vintage art on the walls make for such a warm, inviting space.

IMG_1444

Off to the right from the hallway, you can just make out a huge Champion gun safe in the corner of what is the billiards room. I didn’t snap a photo, but a beautiful antique pool table fills up the parlor! I understand David is quite the pool shark, so I didn’t wager a bet.

The stairs at the back of the grand hall lead to the upstairs bedrooms. Deborah found a space for a Flemish chandelier from our collection for the upstairs hallway, which features a handsome roll-top antique desk and chair. Beyond the double doors is a wonderful second story porch – the perfect place to enjoy a mint julep and watch the fireflies!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us and our readers, Deborah and David!

Antique Furniture in the Kitchen

Antique furniture in the kitchen is not everyone’s first thought when they imagine how they might enjoy antiques in their home. But you’d be surprised! A few weeks ago when I was writing about the renovation of our 1920s vintage bungalow kitchen and then how my dream vintage kitchen  worked out, I realized that antique furnishings in the kitchen is a big part of what makes the space feel so lived in, so comfortable, so inviting, and so uniquely personal.

Let’s take a look at how some of our customers have used antique furniture in the kitchen.

Antique Renaissance Buffet Kitchen Diner

Natalya S. in Palo Alto, CA, bought this very pretty Henry II Renaissance style antique French buffet from us and it makes a wonderful statement in her kitchen. See the full story and more photos here. Elaborate walnut carvings add a decorative touch, along with leafy waterjet inlay design on the wall above the stove. The storage space in the big antique buffet makes it as practical for Natalya’s family as it is handsome.

Creative antique decor: antique French nightstand in the kitchen

Our creative customer Kathleen G.  in in Arcadia, OK, cleverly saw that this French antique nightstand in the Henry II style would work perfectly in her kitchen as a small table offering extra storage space. Dating to 1900, the antique nightstand has a gray marble top which is a good match for a kitchen, and it will keep the fruit platter cool too! See more about Kathleen’s kitchen here.

Vintage Renaissance Table in Dining Room

Our antique French Renaissance style furniture is clearly a popular choice for kitchens! Crystal B. in Harlem, Georgia, hunted for the perfect table for her large, open kitchen for four years before she found this vintage Renaissance table of ours to buy! The sturdy table was crafted around 1950 with a beautiful golden parquet top and an ornate wrought iron stretcher that adds to the Renaissance feel. It’s the kind of welcoming kitchen table that invites everyone to gather around and chat. See more about Crystal’s Renaissance kitchen.

Vintage teaspoon chandelier in kitchen

This upcycled chandelier is one of our most popular light fittings. Although it is not antique, it is hand-crafted by an artisan using vintage silver plate spoons and teacups. It adds a great touch of old-fashioned whimsy in a kitchen. We have quite a selection of upcycled chandeliers with different designs using vintage components, and one of our silver spoon chandeliers was recently featured in Consumer Reports magazine. See how the different chandeliers look  in several of our customers’ kitchens!Modern KitchenPhoto by Lankford Design GroupMore eclectic kitchen ideas

This antique dresser or hutch once lived in Germany where it was a bookcase in a gentleman’s office. But doesn’t it look amazing in this otherwise very modern stainless steel kitchen? It shows that antique furniture can work in any style of kitchen decor. This kind of design imagination creates a completely unique space.

Nob Hill: French Victorian

Another imaginative person repurposed an antique French sideboard into a kitchen island.
I would hesitate to do this with some fine antique furniture, but it does look amazing!

I hope this post has inspired you to think about how you could use antique furniture in your own kitchen! Or do you have some antique furniture, large or small, in your kitchen already? Tell us about it in the comments box – we’d love to hear!

Vintage Life: My Dream Vintage Kitchen

In my previous Kitchen Krazy blog post, I explained our design inspirations and some of our furniture ideas for the kitchen in our 1920s vintage bungalow. Let’s see how it worked out!

Vintage Cabinets Greg sanded down the kitchen cabinet door frames that we had repurposed from the spare doors on an antique cabinet we bought to use as a bedroom bookcase.

(You can see the finished bookcase here.)  I cut new glass panels using seeded glass that looks like old glass.

We knew those would be the upper cabinet doors on either side of the sink. From there, John Hopfensperger of Cayce Custom Cabinetry designed the kitchen cabinets.

vintage style cabinets

John’s designs included all of our wish list items such as a rack for plates, shelves next to the window for growing herbs, a lazy Susan corner cabinet for pots and pans, a slide-out garbage can, and a spot for the microwave off the counter. The vintage light fixtures were hung first.

vintage style cabinets

In addition to kitchen cabinets, I also wanted to use an antique buffet in the kitchen to add even more character to the space. We found an 1920s Arts & Crafts antique buffet in France several years ago and knew it was the perfect piece! It was even painted on the inside with the same blue-green color that I wanted for the cabinets and it has wonderful antique glass doors. Although the top would normally sit on the bottom cabinet, we wanted to hang the top on the wall in order to create more counter space.

Antique French buffet

I held my breath while Greg and the cabinet installers hung it!

The hardware on this cabinet also inspired the choice of hardware for the rest of the kitchen.

I haven’t completely moved everything in yet nor finished decorating my wonderful kitchen, but here are some early “after” photos.

Love my vintage kitchen

Of course, I am also not planning to have plywood counter tops. I want copper counters, but that is still a project we haven’t finished yet. We also have work to do for a backsplash. Don’t worry – you’ll see finished photos eventually!

Love my vintage kitchen
Although the house is far from finished, with the installation of the kitchen, we were finally ready to move in – after three years of hard work!

It would make an impressive home bar too, displaying your favorite wines, spirits and liqueurs!

Carved antique buffet French Renaissance

Carved dog antique french buffet

I love this 1880 antique French Hunting buffet, carved with dogs and birds. The oak buffet stands more than 9 feet tall, crowned by a curved top crest with two birds flanking a regal shield. The detail on their carved feathers is gorgeous, as is the exquisite carving on the doors of a heron with a fish in its beak and a game bird pecking at berries.

Antique French Brittany chairsantique French brittany chair carvingThis set of 6 antique French Brittany chairs is a real conversation starter! Dating to 1880, the six chestnut chairs are carved with different images of traditionally dressed French country men and woman in the seat back.

I had to lighten these images a little so you can see the detailed carving on the seat backs. For that reason they don’t look nearly as rich as the actual aged chestnut wood. You can see detailed close-ups of all the carved characters on the antique Brittany chair listing on our website. Here is one of the guys sauntering through his rustic village just to give you an idea of the quality of the carving and the charm of the chairs! The ship wheel spindles on the crest rail honor Brittany’s maritime history.

Dale Tiffany Carnation LampFinally, this Dale Tiffany lamp is NOT an antique that just arrived on our latest container of antiques from France!

It is newly hand-crafted by Dale Tiffany artisans, inspired by an original antique Tiffany design, with each piece of glass individually crafted using the same copper-foiled technique pioneered by the glass maestro Louis Comfort Tiffany!

The Dale Tiffany carnation accent lamp will put a beautiful spot of summery color into your living room or bedroom all year round.

I’m just showing it to remind you that our discount code is valid on everything on our website.

Client Spotlight: Antique French Buffet Louis XV

Antique Buffet Louis XV Rococo 1890Melodie A. of Raja Interiors in Chico, CA, wanted to find a gorgeous, antique Louis XV buffet to place in one of her client’s homes. We went searching for the perfect piece and located this beauty in France!

It is delightfully carved with Rococo styling in walnut wood with a lovely grain and rich patina and it dates to 1890.

When we found the buffet in France, there was a crack all the way through the glass in the right upper corner of the large glass door.

Perhaps a little wrinkle is not such a surprise for a buffet that is about 120 years old! What is more surprising is that we find so many of our antique buffets with the glass still in excellent shape. Those French craftsmen made furniture to last!

broken glass

We knew we would replace that glass panel prior to shipping, but we had no idea that it would take a specialist to cut and hand-grind the bevel. We took the broken pieces to our local glass store and they explained that due to the unusual shape of the glass (it sort of resembles a paisley), their machines could not possibly cut a bevel all the way around the piece. We also didn’t want to just replace it with flat glass, as that would take away from the beauty of the buffet.

After much searching and networking, I finally located a true artist, Charles Offutt, at Artisan in Glass, in Canton, Georgia. I sent the pieces to him and he said it took an entire day to hand-grind the beveled edge of the replacement glass. He is truly a miracle-worker in glass! If I didn’t know which panel had been replaced, I would never be able to tell. Here’s the buffet with the restored glass in its new home.

French Antique Buffet 1890

Melodie was very patient during this process and she contacted me to say that she received the buffet in good condition and both she and her client are very pleased. We are always glad to hear from happy customers! At more than 8 feet tall, the antique Louis XV buffet is definitely the grand dame of the space. That white ceramic pitcher sets it off so gracefully too. You could say: “It’s pitcher perfect!” Groan…

Art Deco Buffets: Classic Art Deco Style

Art Deco Buffet 18-33A while ago I wrote about how to identify Art Deco furniture and decorative items in my post: What is the Art Deco Style of Antiques?   We recently had a container shipped from France with some beautiful antique Art Deco buffets and they are such fine examples of Art Deco, I’m using those pieces to show you more details of the style.

As a reminder, the Art Deco style was popular in the 1920s and 1930s, reflecting the modern thinking of the Jazz Age and a new taste for sleek and streamlined furniture and architecture.

Prominent and well-defined curves and lines are key elements of the style. This curvy 1920 Art Deco buffet (right, item 18-33) is a fabulous example,

Art Deco Buffet 18-25The hotels of Miami’s South Beach and Manhattan’s iconic Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building are great examples of Art Deco architecture. Applied decoration is also important to the Art Deco look, including stylized floral designs, sunbursts, and geometrics.

This 1920 buffet (item 18-25) from our recent shipment creates a striking architectural silhouette with the curved posts supporting the upper hutch. Elegant floral carvings across the doors add a decorative accent, as do the dramatic metal handles. It is simply impossible to ignore the attention-grabbing allure of an authentic Art Deco buffet. Although the style is streamlined, it is not shy!

Art Deco Buffet Antique 18-38Part of the sleek appeal of Art Deco furniture lies in the use of glossy and shiny materials, including glass, mirror, lacquered finishes and metals. That reflective edge creates much of the glamor we associate with Art Deco. It always looks ready for a party! This walnut buffet dating to 1920 (item 18-38) has plenty of gloss in the mirror-backed upper hutch with a glass door. The mirror panel in the center of the buffet behind the posts reflects light too, above the impressive red/black/grey marble counter. Shine up your chrome cocktail shaker and dress up in your finest Roaring Twenties outfit!

French Art Deco Buffet 18-35Marble had been used in architecture since ancient times, of course, but when Art Deco furniture makers started using it, it added that opulence we expect of Art Deco. It is luxurious, but in a very modern way. This French Art Deco buffet (item 18-35) boasts three slabs of black marble as counters in addition to the mirrored back and glass-front cabinet. By now, you’ll recognize that the bold linear design on the cabinet front, topped by carved exotic foliage, is typical of the Art Deco style.

Marble on Art Deco Buffet 18-35Here’s a close-up of the black marble, so you can see how attractive the pattern is against the curving carved posts.

To see more of the exceptional design details from this era, take a look at all our antique Art Deco Buffets. It’s is appropriate that they are French buffets because Art Deco was named after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs held in Paris in 1925. This event showcased many of the exciting new designs.
