See Our Antique Furniture in Customer Homes

Our series of client spotlight blog posts shows how our antique furniture and lighting look in our customers’ homes.  These are some of our most popular blog posts among people who read our antiques blog! Anyone who is interested in home decor enjoys a sneak peek inside someone else’s house. It’s also a good way to see how other people live with antiques and incorporate them into today’s homes. Plus, thanks to the kindness of our customers, we get a mini tour of some mighty fine homes!

Here is a roundup of our antique furniture customer spotlights for the last six months, in case you missed seeing them. Click the links to read the full story and see more photos.

South Carolina Historic Home PictureThis is an example of one of those mighty fine homes I was telling you about! We delivered a handsome antique French Renaissance buffet to the this gorgeous historic home built in 1810 in Winnsboro, SC.  Read the antique Renaissance buffet blog post to see photographs of the interior including our intricately carved antique buffet in the charming dining room and several of our vintage chandeliers hanging in other rooms.

French Antique Brittany Bed

Greg and I personally delivered a stunning French antique Brittany bed and a Brittany buffet to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL. May retired here but she used to travel a lot to Europe and she loves Paris, so she especially enjoys buying antique French furniture. May bought an 1880 chestnut wood French Brittany antique bed, heavily carved with scenes of villagers and windmills. She also bought a Brittany style buffet dating to the same year, and asked us if we could alter the buffet to fit a TV for her bedroom. We could and we did! See more photos of the converted buffet and of May’s 14th floor apartment with its lovely views in the Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed blog post.

Vintage French Rococo Dining ChairsFran P. in Concord, NC, bought this beautiful set of vintage French Rococo dining chairs for her dining room. The six mahogany vintage French dining chairs date to 1950 and the chairs feature curvy lines from the cabriole legs to the carved curlicues.

The soft pinky beige fabric upholstery is also pretty in Fran’s dining room. It blends very well with the colors in her rug and the gilded Rococo mirror,

Antique French Provincial Armoire repurposedWe delivered a handsome antique French Provincial armoire to our customers Paul and Lane near Clemson, SC.  for them to repurpose into a unique gun cabinet!

The armoire is carved in the Normandy style, dating to 1890, with a large carved vase of flowers on the top and many carvings of birds.

Paul is going to convert the armoire himself. Lane is pleased to have a terrific full-length mirror in the master bedroom and she likes the fact that the mirrored doors will hide the gun collection.

See our blog post Antique Armoire Repurposed as a Gun Cabinet for more pictures including the antique Louis XV Buffet the couple bought from us for their dining room and another example of how a bookcase was repurposed as a gun cabinet!

Client Spotlight: Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed

Deliver Antique Brittany BedGreg and I just delivered a French antique Brittany buffet and Brittany bed to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL.

It was one of our slowest deliveries because we had to make a bunch of trips up and down the elevator as May lives on the 14th floor.

But what a spectacular view she has from every room in her lovely home, which is filled with European antiques!

May retired to Pensacola Beach from Connecticut, but in her corporate life, she traveled frequently to Europe.

Pensacola ViewThat is how she fell in love with European interior design, and Paris is her very favorite place to be.

May bought a couple of pieces of furniture from EuroLuxHome.com. The first was an 1880 French Brittany antique bed.

French Antique Brittany Bed

The antique Brittany bed is heavily carved in chestnut wood, with wonderful scenes in traditional Brittany style. The top of the headboard is carved with a man and women relaxing beneath a windmill. You can almost see the sails turning on the windmill because the carving is so detailed! The footboard panel depicts merry country villagers celebrating. Floral carvings and ship wheels also adorn the bed. You can see close-ups of similar carvings in the antique French Brittany furniture currently for sale on our website.

Antique French Brittany Buffet

The antique French Brittany style buffet also dates to 1880 and it is also elaborately hand-carved with scenes of rural life. Figures of a man and woman act as support columns and add a whimsical touch to this beautiful antique buffet.

French Antique Brittany Buffet

These French country folk know how to enjoy themselves! Here they gather round a wine barrel to enjoy themselves after a long day working in the fields!  May contacted me to ask if we could have the Brittany buffet altered to accommodate a TV for viewing in her bedroom.

Converted Antique Brittany Buffet

We had a local restoration company remove the central support in between the left and center upper doors, and attach it to the end of the left door. They did a wonderful job.

The Brittany buffet and bed looked fantastic in May’s bedroom and they now enjoy a fantastic view of the ocean and bay. Bo, May’s charming whippet, was very helpful during the whole delivery. I wish I had taken a photo of him! He was such a pretty dog.

Then we left to drive on to New Orleans… More about that in another blog post! For now, thanks to May for letting us share her stunning views and photos of the antique Brittany bed and buffet in her home.

Carved antique buffet French Renaissance

Carved dog antique french buffet

I love this 1880 antique French Hunting buffet, carved with dogs and birds. The oak buffet stands more than 9 feet tall, crowned by a curved top crest with two birds flanking a regal shield. The detail on their carved feathers is gorgeous, as is the exquisite carving on the doors of a heron with a fish in its beak and a game bird pecking at berries.

Antique French Brittany chairsantique French brittany chair carvingThis set of 6 antique French Brittany chairs is a real conversation starter! Dating to 1880, the six chestnut chairs are carved with different images of traditionally dressed French country men and woman in the seat back.

I had to lighten these images a little so you can see the detailed carving on the seat backs. For that reason they don’t look nearly as rich as the actual aged chestnut wood. You can see detailed close-ups of all the carved characters on the antique Brittany chair listing on our website. Here is one of the guys sauntering through his rustic village just to give you an idea of the quality of the carving and the charm of the chairs! The ship wheel spindles on the crest rail honor Brittany’s maritime history.

Dale Tiffany Carnation LampFinally, this Dale Tiffany lamp is NOT an antique that just arrived on our latest container of antiques from France!

It is newly hand-crafted by Dale Tiffany artisans, inspired by an original antique Tiffany design, with each piece of glass individually crafted using the same copper-foiled technique pioneered by the glass maestro Louis Comfort Tiffany!

The Dale Tiffany carnation accent lamp will put a beautiful spot of summery color into your living room or bedroom all year round.

Client Spotlight: Brittany Antique Longcase Clock

Antique Brittany ClockTick tock, tick tock! A few months have passed since our customer Loren G. in McKinney, TX, sent photos of the antique Brittany clock that she bought from us. Now it’s time to show you Loren’s lovely home where the antique French longcase clock marks the days in style.

This is the French Breton-style grandfather clock, dating to about 1880 or 1900 and crafted in chestnut wood with an elaborately hand-carved case. The gorgeous antique clock shows scenes from daily life in Brittany, France, as is typical of Brittany style antique furniture.

Around the enamel clock face, pressed brass decorative detail depicting bouquets of flowers suggest that it might have been made as a wedding gift for some lucky couple.  Here is the clock in Loren’s house.

French Antique Clock

The pendulum is adorned with glorious sunflowers and the lower door features carved grape leaves, symbolizing joie de vivre and abundant good wishes for the married couple.
I love how authentic it looks against those Belle Epoque style swagged red drapes.

French Antique Grandfather Clock

This photo shows the longcase clock with the other furniture in the room. Loren has done a delightful job in her pairing of the dining table and chairs and the clock, as well as with her perfect choice of accessories. That chandelier! Those candles! And that handsome wood floor too! It provides the perfect backdrop for the space.

The antique French clock strikes the hour and half hour and if you want to hear what the strike sounds like, you can hear it on our YouTube video. It’s only 23 seconds long but we got a bit arty with that video and the French backing music! The clock strike is very pretty.

Antique Clock being packed for transitWhen Loren purchased the antique Brittany clock from us, we crated it very carefully to make sure it arrived safely. This photo shows the packing process. You can see that there was NO WAY we were going to let any harm come to that precious cargo on its way to Texas. I’m only surprised that one of the cats didn’t end up traveling WITH the clock. You know how they are about jumping into any box to make it home!

A big thank you to Loren for sending us photos of this impressive grandfather clock looking so wonderful in its new home.

Client Spotlight: Antique Carved Furniture Fusion

Rick and Cheri J. enjoy visiting our little town of Newberry! They enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, small town charm, and our wonderful Newberry Opera House. They usually try to plan a weekend get-away to Newberry several times a year to catch a few shows and enjoy prime rib or shrimp and grits at one of our local restaurants, Cabana Cafe. Of course, they also spend some time visiting our EuroLux Antiques gallery on Main street.

Rick and Cheri have purchased quite a few pieces from us over the years. I love the fact that they have a strong sense of their own taste… they follow their hearts in choosing furniture for their home. They aren’t restricted by some idea that they must select pieces all in the same style. They do like antique carved pieces, but they are bold in mixing up styles to create a unique furniture fusion! Let me show you what I mean.

Antique carved French Renaissance buffet

Rick and Cheri chose this beautiful 1900 French Renaissance buffet in walnut with a marble top. The antique carved buffet boasts whimsical jesters at the top. The buffet graces a wall adjacent to the dining table. Notice the table is set and is complete with a bottle of champagne!

Antique carved buffet

Antique carved French 1880 Hunting style vanity

They also chose an antique carved Hunting style vanity for the bedroom. The 1880 French vanity table in walnut features barley twist legs, bun feet, and a lovely marble top.

Antique carved 1880 French vanity

Their beloved Akita guards the vanity in its new home in Rick and Cheri’s bedroom! I can’t decide which is more gorgeous – the dog or the vanity! Together they make an adorable tableau.

The couple also recently purchased a Flemish Renaissance Mechelen table. The antique carved oak table dates to 1900. Splendid carved lions’ heads keep watch from each corner, and the deep apron is adorned with a carved pattern to set off the floral design on the five nicely turned legs.

Antique carved Mechelen table Rick and Cheri plan to use the table as a desk, paired with this handsome Eastlake Chair that they bought from us. The very fine arrow-shaped silhouette on the crest rail is just one highlight of the antique carved walnut Eastlake chair. The chair was crafted in the USA circa 1900, and it is typical of the Eastlake style that was so popular in America in that era.

Antique carved Eastlake chair

Antique carved French Brittany 1880 nightstand with marble topFinally, although he wasn’t sure where it would go in their home yet, Rick picked out a chestnut nightstand in the Brittany style. The French nightstand features an enchanting red marble top. It’s rare to find such ornate decoration on the back rail, but this antique carved nightstand dating to 1880 has it all! Two figures of a man and a woman recline in a pastoral scene beneath trees, a farm house, and a windmill, and the door medallion contains a cameo of a dashing male figure.

Although from around the same era, all these antique carved pieces are in different styles: Eastlake, Brittany, Renaissance, and Mechelen. And they all work brilliantly together in a fantastic furniture fusion!

Best of October 2013: Victorian Restoration, Home Accessories and More!

Where did this month go? We went from harvest to Halloween in our October blog posts, starting with polka and liver nips at the Newberry Oktoberfest through to our vintage Halloween photos! Along the way we talked about some gorgeous antique furniture and home decor inspirations. Let’s revisit some of our favorite October posts.

Antique Brittany Furniture for Victorian Restoration

Our client Angela M. is restoring this beautiful 1890 Victorian house in Galveston, TX.  The white porch is adorned with mariner’s wheels details and Angela bought several pieces of French Brittany furniture from us to continue the maritime theme. See more about Angela’s Victorian restoration and the antique Brittany furniture!
Boho style Mission chandelier
With Halloween on the horizon, we took a tour of the Gothic chandeliers and other magical light fixtures in our gallery. Check out the dragons, eagles, and castles in our Gothic Chandelier post! Of course, vintage Gothic chandeliers add character and Old World atmosphere to a home all year round. They offer a dash of drama, fantasy, romance and mystery. They’re great for period-style homes, but also perfect for people who love an eclectic element in their home decor.
Stained glass in home decor accentsSpeaking of eclectic, we also looked at the many ways you can use stained glass in home decor accents.  If you think stained glass is only for church windows… think again! Of course we looked at some lovely examples of stained glass in home windows, but also explored ways to add a touch of luminous stained glass color in furniture and lighting too. And we found stained glass patterns in fabrics, wallpaper, decals, and even a shower curtain!
We also turned our client spotlight on this antique buffet we provided to the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston, MA.
Antique buffet in seminary lobby
The seminary is one of the largest evangelical seminaries in North America and a donor  generously gave funds to decorate the lobby. Mary Ann asked us to help her find an impressive antique buffet suitable for the space, and this elaborately carved Henry II Renaissance-style buffet dating to 1900 did the trick! See more about the 9-foot-tall sideboard and the new lobby decor in our antique buffet post.

Windsor counter stool in our client's California kitchenOur Windsor Counter Stool client spotlight described how Wendy in California saved money with us when she was searching for stools for her kitchen. Wendy is a very smart shopper! The Woodbridge Windsor counter stools look perfect in Wendy’s lovely kitchen and although they are hand-crafted to appear authentically antique, they offer the modern convenience of a swivel seat!

Client Spotlight: Antique Brittany Furniture for Victorian Restoration

Angela M. recently bought several pieces of antique Brittany furniture from our gallery for the beautiful Victorian house that she is restoring in Galveston, TX.  The 1890 Victorian was almost completely gutted by fire about two decades ago. Here is the photo Angela sent us of the outside of the house as it looked nearly 120 years ago in the year 1894.

Our client's Victorian restoration home as looked in 1894

And below is a photo of the house “under new management” last year. Isn’t it gorgeous?

Front closeup

Angela says that the house is known for the lovely detailing around the porch of mariner’s wheels.  The white paint on the porch really makes those wheels stand out! Antique Brittany furniture is a perfect choice for the interior. The Brittany style often features maritime details such as ship’s wheels in tribute to coastal Brittany’s sea-faring history.

Brittany armoire 14-2A-1This is one of the pieces of antique Brittany furniture Angela chose for the house. It’s a display cabinet or bookcase dating to 1880, carved in chestnut with a beveled glass door. You can see the large ship’s wheel at the top of the French cabinet, tying in with the maritime theme of the house porch. The two galleries of spindles along the top and bottom of the bookcase are typical of Brittany style furniture. So are the hand-carved rosettes adorning the bottom drawer.
Antique Brittany Table KC-33A-1Angela also picked this Brittany style chestnut dining table dating to 1880. It’s a real stunner and the French craftsmanship is superb. Each leg boasts a carved figurine of a man or a woman wearing period regional costume. Carved figures of French country folk like these often decorate antique Brittany furniture. They are one of the most delightful characteristics of the style. The central stretcher beneath the table once again features a carved ship’s wheel.

Antique Brittany chairs KC-33B-1To match the table, Angela chose this splendid set of six Brittany dining chairs. Crafted in France in around 1880, the chestnut chairs are carved with an arched gallery of spindles on the crest rail. Each chair back features a carving of a French man or woman in happy pastoral scenes. Some of them are playing bagpipes. If you’re wondering why French country folk are playing bagpipes – an instrument that normally makes us think of Scotland – here’s the reason. Brittany is historically a Celtic nation, like Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Similar Celtic traditions and symbols appear in all those regions as they had such close cultural ties. Hence the bagpipes, which are often portrayed on antique Brittany furniture.

Due to Angela’s arthritis, she is having much of the Victorian restoration work done for her. We all know these things take time! But we hope she sends us photos of the antique Brittany furniture in place once the house is further along. Angela says “I should have waited a while to buy furniture, but I love the Brittany style and just couldn’t resist!”

We’re glad she gave in to temptation. She chose some exceptional furniture that will blend perfectly into the stately Victorian house and stay true to the exterior’s maritime theme.

Gothic Chandeliers: Castles, Dragons, Romance

With Halloween just around the corner, we’ve been admiring the Gothic chandeliers and other spooky light fixtures in our gallery. They would make great talking points at a Halloween party, but of course vintage Gothic chandeliers add character and Old World atmosphere to a home at any time of year. Here are some of our favorite Gothic chandeliers from all the lighting in our gallery right now and others that give a sense of Gothic novel romance. Which is your favorite?

Game of Thrones Gothic ChandelierGame of Thrones fans will love the fantasy castle carved on this vintage 1930 French Brittany style chandelier. The four castle turrets rise up to create magical, mysterious drama and the castle even boasts drawbridges to support the five copper lamps. It hangs from chunky chains that look like they’ve been dragged straight from the castle dungeons!

Dragon Gothic ChandelierThere be dragons! Six carved dragons “breathe fire” into the electric candles of this fabulous 1950 French Gothic chandelier. The dragons with ornate wings suspend from metal chains from the oak ceiling cap. The dark oak wood and metal chains add to the medieval fantasy flavor, but we’ve found that the dragons are quite tame!

Eagle Gothic ChandelierFrom dragons to eagles! Six fabulous Gothic carved eagles perch atop this awesome chandelier, holding the glass shades in their beaks. The six lights cast a moody glow on the wise and powerful eagles as they watch over the world below. The 1950 French Gothic chandelier is carved in oak and the dark wood truly accents the striking silhouette of the eagles for maximum drama.

Boho style Mission chandelierHere’s a rather more romantic chandelier for Lords and Ladies of mystery. You can imagine it starring in a Gothic novel, lighting the ballroom in a mansion on the misty moors! Six decoratively wrought arms and sensuously designed curlicues and serpenting s-shapes create the thrilling allure of this quite sexy 1950 French black metal chandelier. Flowing velvet gowns are optional.

Heavy French Gothic Chandlier 1950The classic appeal of this large and heavy 1950 French Gothic chandelier is enhanced by the coachlight-style body. It summons up images of a ghostly horse-drawn coach racing through the night, driven by a shadowy black-cowled figure cracking his whip! The frosted glass lamps and spiky finials on the aged brass-tone metal all add to the cool Gothic chandelier vibe.

Don’t be a phantom! Tell us in the comments box below: Which one of these spooky, dramatic, or just plain Gothic novel romantic chandeliers gives you thrills?

Client Spotlight: Baby Makes 8! Plus Using Antique Furniture in a Child’s Bedroom

Photo of our clients Bruce and Julie with baby Bruce Junior and newborn Bella Lynn.

Baby Bella makes…eight! Our clients Bruce and Julie pose in front of their new antique French Brittany buffet with Bruce Junior and Bella Lynn.

When we last visited Bruce and Julie of Whitmire, SC, they had just purchased an antique French Brittany armoire from us to use in their master bedroom. When we visited them again a couple of weeks ago to deliver their new antique Brittany buffet for the entryway, we discovered another new addition to the master bedroom: a crib for baby number eight! Little Bella Lynn joins seven siblings, all under age 14. Congratulations!

Photographic proof children and antique furniture can peacefully coexist! Bruce and Julie's daughters' room is decorated with an antique bed and other furnishings. I love the pretty Barbie doll in a pink ball gown decorating the mantel!

On this visit, I was struck by how Bruce and Julie have successfully incorporated antique furniture into their children’s rooms. Many people don’t think children and antique furniture can coexist peacefully, but Bruce and Julie prove that’s not the case. Not only do their children live with antiques, they seem to love them. I especially got a chuckle out of seeing the Barbie dolls neatly lined up on the mantelpiece in one of the girls’ rooms. Charming!

Bruce and Julie’s home is blessed with a large entryway, and they’d been making routine trips to our bricks-and-mortar gallery in Newberry to find a suitably scaled antique French buffet to furnish the grand entry. Luckily we just received a new container from Europe, and we could hardly get this particular buffet off the ship fast enough! Bruce and Julie snapped it up, and as you can see it’s the perfect fit for their decor.

The antique French Brittany armoire Bruce and Julie purchased from us last year. Note how Bruce has embellished the original mantel in the master bedroom. Love the chandelier, too!

Bruce is quite a woodworker, and I admired all the embellishments he’s made to the original mantels throughout the house. I also love the way Bruce and Julie use chandeliers throughout their home (because, really, who can have too many crystal swags near the ceiling?!). Note how they scale the size of the chandelier to suit the room.

Great use of color in Bruce and Julie's dining room! Red can feel overwhelming, but the white fireplace, patterned upholstery, and glass decor balance the burgundy nicely.

We’ve been discussing the use of color all month, and Bruce and Julie’s home makes a great study in how to use rich paint colors and colorful furnishings in a harmonious design that’s not overpowering. I love the fact all the fireplace mantels are white, for example. This technique unifies the design throughout the house and helps balance the vivid wall color. In the dining room, red walls are balanced by patterned upholstery and glass accents. In the bedrooms, red furnishings contrast neutral wall colors. Well done!

We appreciate the repeat business from Bruce and Julie and wish them all the best with their new little one, Bella!

If you’d like to see your home featured in a client spotlight, email me photos! We love to show off our clients’ great interior designs.
