Client Spotlight: Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed

Deliver Antique Brittany BedGreg and I just delivered a French antique Brittany buffet and Brittany bed to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL.

It was one of our slowest deliveries because we had to make a bunch of trips up and down the elevator as May lives on the 14th floor.

But what a spectacular view she has from every room in her lovely home, which is filled with European antiques!

May retired to Pensacola Beach from Connecticut, but in her corporate life, she traveled frequently to Europe.

Pensacola ViewThat is how she fell in love with European interior design, and Paris is her very favorite place to be.

May bought a couple of pieces of furniture from EuroLuxHome.com. The first was an 1880 French Brittany antique bed.

French Antique Brittany Bed

The antique Brittany bed is heavily carved in chestnut wood, with wonderful scenes in traditional Brittany style. The top of the headboard is carved with a man and women relaxing beneath a windmill. You can almost see the sails turning on the windmill because the carving is so detailed! The footboard panel depicts merry country villagers celebrating. Floral carvings and ship wheels also adorn the bed. You can see close-ups of similar carvings in the antique French Brittany furniture currently for sale on our website.

Antique French Brittany Buffet

The antique French Brittany style buffet also dates to 1880 and it is also elaborately hand-carved with scenes of rural life. Figures of a man and woman act as support columns and add a whimsical touch to this beautiful antique buffet.

French Antique Brittany Buffet

These French country folk know how to enjoy themselves! Here they gather round a wine barrel to enjoy themselves after a long day working in the fields!  May contacted me to ask if we could have the Brittany buffet altered to accommodate a TV for viewing in her bedroom.

Converted Antique Brittany Buffet

We had a local restoration company remove the central support in between the left and center upper doors, and attach it to the end of the left door. They did a wonderful job.

The Brittany buffet and bed looked fantastic in May’s bedroom and they now enjoy a fantastic view of the ocean and bay. Bo, May’s charming whippet, was very helpful during the whole delivery. I wish I had taken a photo of him! He was such a pretty dog.

Then we left to drive on to New Orleans… More about that in another blog post! For now, thanks to May for letting us share her stunning views and photos of the antique Brittany bed and buffet in her home.

Client Spotlight: Antique French Buffet Louis XV

Antique Buffet Louis XV Rococo 1890Melodie A. of Raja Interiors in Chico, CA, wanted to find a gorgeous, antique Louis XV buffet to place in one of her client’s homes. We went searching for the perfect piece and located this beauty in France!

It is delightfully carved with Rococo styling in walnut wood with a lovely grain and rich patina and it dates to 1890.

When we found the buffet in France, there was a crack all the way through the glass in the right upper corner of the large glass door.

Perhaps a little wrinkle is not such a surprise for a buffet that is about 120 years old! What is more surprising is that we find so many of our antique buffets with the glass still in excellent shape. Those French craftsmen made furniture to last!

broken glass

We knew we would replace that glass panel prior to shipping, but we had no idea that it would take a specialist to cut and hand-grind the bevel. We took the broken pieces to our local glass store and they explained that due to the unusual shape of the glass (it sort of resembles a paisley), their machines could not possibly cut a bevel all the way around the piece. We also didn’t want to just replace it with flat glass, as that would take away from the beauty of the buffet.

After much searching and networking, I finally located a true artist, Charles Offutt, at Artisan in Glass, in Canton, Georgia. I sent the pieces to him and he said it took an entire day to hand-grind the beveled edge of the replacement glass. He is truly a miracle-worker in glass! If I didn’t know which panel had been replaced, I would never be able to tell. Here’s the buffet with the restored glass in its new home.

French Antique Buffet 1890

Melodie was very patient during this process and she contacted me to say that she received the buffet in good condition and both she and her client are very pleased. We are always glad to hear from happy customers! At more than 8 feet tall, the antique Louis XV buffet is definitely the grand dame of the space. That white ceramic pitcher sets it off so gracefully too. You could say: “It’s pitcher perfect!” Groan…

Client Spotlight: Buffet Carved with Famous Painting

This is an unusual story about an antique French buffet with a carving inspired by a well-known French painting.  Our customer Saul in Gurnee, IL, bought the antique Renaissance buffet from us last year while he and his wife were building a new home. Now they are settled in, Saul got in touch to purchase a bench from us and he also sent us a photo of the buffet in place. So let’s take a look!
Carved Antique Renaissance BuffetThis is the gorgeous antique Renaissance buffet, fabulously carved in walnut and dating to about 1900. On the top center door, there is a carving of two lovers on a swing under a tree, based on the 1873 painting titled Le Printemps (Springtime) by Pierre-Auguste Cot. I first saw the buffet at an antiques market in France and I was wowed by the carving of the lovers, so we had it shipped home to the gallery. The patina of the walnut is very nice – it has a warm glow. The Renaissance Revival Henry II-style buffet is also carved with other Renaissance-style flourishes, fruit, and faces.

Lovers on a swing carving

On this close-up of the door you see the lovers better. Isn’t it romantic and exquisitely carved? You can almost feel the breeze wafting through the folds of their robes.  Here’s the original Le Printemps so you can see how well the carving capture the painting, but in three dimensions:

Le Printemps

The artist  Pierre Auguste Cot lived from 1837 to 1883 and among his many prizes and medals he was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Le Printemps was one of his two most famous paintings. It is now on display in New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art .

Antique Renaissance Buffet in client home

And finally… here’s the buffet in Saul’s home. He says that he loves it! I noticed the nice table too with figure carvings on the legs. Saul told me it was an antique and be bought it because he liked it. I would guess that it may be French Renaissance dating to the turn of the century and I think it is also made in walnut,  so it is the perfect complement to the buffet.

leather window seat BG-225Saul also just bought this handsome new bench or window seat from us. It’s a very good match for the antique Renaissance pieces he has, with the leather upholstery, nailhead trim, decorative stretcher and a blackwash finish. I hope we’ll get a photo of this piece in your lovely new home too, Saul! I can’t wait to see how you continue to curate the furnishings and other decor as you obviously have a very clear vision in mind and it all looks terrific so far!

We’d love to hear readers’ comments about the carving of the painting. What do you think? Share your opinion in the comments.

Client Spotlight: Charming Cottage Style

We met Lenore and John M. at the Antique Tobacco Barn in Asheville, NC, while we were there restocking our booth. Lenore and John recently purchased a very charming cottage in Sapphire, NC, that dates to the turn of the century and sits next to a babbling brook.

Antique French Hunting BuffetLenore fell in love with two buffets in our booth and then went on our website and found a beautiful set of chairs to match!

Lenore wanted an impressive buffet for the open dining area to fit with the rustic nature of the exposed logs in the mountain cabin.

I think the antique Hunting Buffet makes an excellent choice! The stunning carved scene of a hunter and stag on the upper cabinet makes this antique French Henry II buffet a work of art as well as a beautiful piece of furniture. The two lower cabinet doors are carved with mythical, dragon-like creatures.
Antique French Carved Henry II BuffetHere is the 8-feet-tall antique Henry II style oak buffet in Lenore’s home. Made in France in 1920, the buffet makes an eye-catching statement with practical storage and serving space. Vintage French Chairs

Peeking into the bottom of the photo you can see the vintage French Renaissance dining chairs Lenore chose.

The set of six French Renaissance dining chairs was made in about 1930. The vintage chairs are beautifully upholstered in red and cream brocade and the spiral turning on the oak legs adds another decorative detail.

Let’s take a better look at the vintage chairs together with the antique buffet in Lenore’s dining area…

antique French dining chairs Renaissance

Doesn’t it look amazing? The red patterned upholstery on the antique Renaissance style chairs adds a pop of color and provides comfortable seating around the long plank-top dining table.

Vintage French Buffet Louis XVI CarvedLenore also chose a pretty Louis XVI buffet for the master bedroom. The vintage French buffet is carved with delightful ribbons, floral designs and coats of arms. The unusual vintage buffet with a rich golden patina on the aged oak was crafted in France in 1930 and nearly the entire front is carved in with beautiful detail. Lenore saw that the mirrored doors and open display shelves of this sideboard made it the perfect candidate for a subtle French translation…. she got creative and turned it into a piece of bedroom furniture!

What a magnificent and unique dresser, with so much space to tuck away your jewels and silk scarves and other favorite pieces of clothing.

Louis XVI antique sideboard bedroomThe bedroom is just off a sitting room with a large fireplace – a wonderful place to enjoy a bottle of wine! The four poster bed is also an antique that came from the personal collection of the original owner of the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. We think the feminine elements on the Louis XVI buffet in combination with the gorgeous four-poster bed combine to make a very romantic master bedroom indeed.

We love it when our customers get creative with using antique furniture in their homes.
Many thanks to Lenore and John for inviting us into your lovely home for a tour!

Among our favorite antiques and creative home decor blog posts from November,  our story about Bob H.’s Renaissance Knight Buffet, Mural, and Window has to be one of the most memorable.

Renaissance Glass Window FoyerBob was so inspired by the Renaissance knight on horseback carved on an antique buffet he bought from us, he had a mural made to match, and then a matching stained glass window  for his impressive foyer. His Illinois home evokes European castles so the Knight theme is fitting. See the mural, window details, and more photos of Bob’s home in this blog post.

Ambella Home Aspen SideboardIn another in our series of client spotlights, Amy B. in Wichita, KS, got in touch to show us photos of the Ambella Home Aspen sideboard in Amy’s home. She bought the sideboard from us earlier this year and did a wonderful job in accessorizing it.

For readers who are getting ready to redecorate soon, I shared some creative home decor ideas in my stories on Classic Painted Floor Designs and Red Wine Colored Decor. Whether you are painting floors or walls, I hope that you find some useful inspiration!

The most exciting story for us personally this month is that we finally moved into our our 1920s vintage bungalow.

vintage bungalow summer2012Regular readers of this blog know that Greg and I have been renovating our darling 1920s bungalow (a.k.a. The Money Pit) since we bought it in October 2011. That vintage house has had a complete makeover from top to bottom since then! We’ve shared our Vintage Life Bungalow Renovation stories  along the way, and we still have plenty of work ahead of us. We’ll share that with you too. But for now, as we moved into the house just before Thanksgiving, we are just very thankful to be living in our new home.

I look forward to sharing more creative home decor news with you through the month of December, and hearing about your own antiques and creative decorating too!

Client Spotlight: Renaissance Knight Buffet, Mural & Window

Last year I wrote about Bob H. in Prairie Grove, Illinois, who bought a set of ten antique Renaissance chairs from us. We had a wonderful photo tour of his amazing French Renaissance chateau style home, inspired by European castles.

Renaissance Buffet with Lladro figure in our client's home. EuroLuxAntiques.comBob enjoys medieval and Renaissance armor and he also bought a marble-top French Renaissance buffet, carved with a knight on horseback. Bob was so inspired by the knight on horseback carving that he had artists create a mural based on the carving, and then a stained glass window too. Let’s start at the beginning!

This is the antique Renaissance buffet Bob chose. Bob has been a pharmacist for 30 years, so he decorated the walnut wood buffet with a vintage Lladro Spanish porcelain figure of a pharmacist and antique mortars and pestles.

French Renaissance Buffet

Knight carvingThis close-up of the upper part of the buffet shows the Renaissance knight on the center door, riding his horse before the old castle.

This is the image that inspired Bob to have a mural painted by an artist, for an alcove in an upstairs hallway.

The mural came out looking like this…

 Renaissance Mural

It’s so fantastic and such a great likeness to the carving! But Bob still wasn’t done. The Renaissance knight was called upon again to serve his lord and master, Sir Bob.  This time, the knight would ride across a stained glass window. To keep you in suspense just a little longer, here’s the commissioned artist at work on the window.

Stained Glass Window Artist

What an incredible job she did. You can see the result in the photo below, as we unveil Bob’s Renaissance knight stained glass window to the world. (You can almost hear the heraldic blare of Renaissance court trumpets, can’t you?)

Renaissance Knight Stained Glass Window

The stained glass window is beautiful and the colors so bright and pure. What a jewel! It’s big too, at six feet tall and 2 feet wide. The window is installed in the foyer above Bob’s front door entry.

Renaissance Glass Window Foyer

The suit of armor in the foyer is a nice early 20th century reproduction, but the rapier sword with the suit is an original from the 17th century. There are so many gorgeous details in this space, let’s take a look from some other angles.

Renaissance EntryWay

This is the view from the top of the stairs, with that chunky iron chandelier making the perfect accent to the window.

Renaissance tapestry chandelier

On the left wall of the foyer, a large tapestry or wall hanging adds another authentic touch to the medieval Renaissance style.  I mentioned ten leather-upholstered antique Renaissance chairs dating to 1900 that Bob also bought from us. Here they are in his splendid kitchen paired with a custom table that Bob had made by Amish craftsmen to match the chairs.

Renaissance Chairs Set Table

Bob is one of our visionary clients who has a great knack for creative décor and we so appreciate him keeping us posted of the knight’s latest journey. What’s next, Sir Bob? A stone-carved knight fountain, perhaps? We can’t wait to hear!

Client Spotlight: Castle in Charleston

I first heard from Brittany through our EuroLux Etsy store. She mentioned she was looking for furniture with lions and I told her she had come to the right place! She and her husband Greg drove over from Charleston, SC, in order to pick out a few pieces for their beautiful brand new home, which looks like it was plucked right out of the Loire Valley in France.

Client's home: A Castle in Charleston

Outfitting your own castle is a big job! Brittany and Greg are just getting started, but they want to take their time and find just the right antique pieces that speak to them.

Mechelen BuffetThe first piece that said, “Bring me home!” was a gorgeous antique Mechelen stained glass buffet with lots of carvings and lion’s heads. The buffet dates to 1900 and it boasts the original red, green and amber stained glass doors with a floral design.

The winged lions on the side supports are exceptionally pretty and the high-quality carvings on both the upper and lower cabinets of this buffet include many regal lions’ heads, some with a brass or gold toned ring, as well as male and female figures and faces.

Its new home is in the dining room just off Brittany’s gorgeous kitchen. The large dining table and chairs haven’t arrived yet, but you can imagine how grand the dinner parties will be! The view from the kitchen and dining room looks out over an inter-coastal marsh – imagine the beautiful sunsets Brittany and Greg will enjoy while dining.

Antique Mechelen buffet in castle home

Another handsome piece that whispered to Greg was a monumental Renaissance sideboard with massive lion’s paw feet. This piece will now reside in the formal living room, which is the first thing one sees after entering up the front stairs and through the double, solid-wood castle doors. It’s more than 8 feet long, so it makes quite an impression:

Antique sideboard Eventually Brittany and Greg will find the perfect piece of art or perhaps a gorgeous mirror to go over the French 1880 sideboard. Here’s another view of the antique Mechelen buffet. It looks so splendid against the rich wood floors and that ornate chandelier.

Mechelen antique buffet in castle homeWe love that Brittany and Greg are taking their time and filling their home with just the right pieces rather than buying everything at once. A layered, lived in look is so much more interesting. And in November, Brittany and Greg are expecting little Italia – baby will make three in their castle by the sea! We wish you both a big congratulations and will keep an eye out for more gorgeous pieces for your beautiful home!

Spring Cleaning Antiques Deals

Greg and I are busy spring cleaning and sorting out some of our older inventory, which means you can pick up some great antiques deals as we cut prices on pieces that are still waiting for a good home! If you’ve had your eye on something you liked, now is the time to mosey on over to EuroLuxAntiques.com and see if we’ve reduced the price. Discounts on selected treasures are mostly around 40% off – sometimes more!

Our spring cleaning antiques deals include furniture, vintage lighting and other smaller items and decorative accents too.

Renaissance buffet in our spring cleaning antiques deals Although spring cleaning usually sounds like a chore, we’re really enjoying sorting through our stock. We always pride ourselves on our good value, but during the 10th anniversary year of our business we’ve got even more excuse to say ‘thank you’ to our cherished customers with some superb antiques deals.

For example, this fine antique French Renaissance Henry II buffet dating to 1900 has been significantly reduced to $2,820. When you consider the price of a modern buffet or serving hutch, we think that this beautifully carved oak antique buffet is a steal! At nearly nine feet high and six feet wide, the large Renaissance style buffet offers tons of serving and storage space, including a full-length plate rack. The swags and floral and medallion carvings on the doors make this a very nicely crafted piece.

Our Antiques deals include this amazing vintage French chandelier I’m sure that someone with a taste for romance will quickly snap up this amazing French vintage Rococo chandelier in the Marie Theresa style. One of my favorite spring cleaning antiques deals, the sparkly glass and metal 6-arm chandelier drips with clear jewel pendants and it’s studded with pretty rosettes. Delightful for a bedroom, foyer, or even a fancy master bath, the 25″ high vintage chandelier has now been ‘spring cleaned’ down to $580. That’s nearly half price!

Mueller ClockSmart investors might take note of this very rare antique clock signed by the famous clock manufacturer Nicholas Mueller’s Sons. The intricate antique Rococo clock is dated April 25 1882 on the works and it still runs and strikes the hour too! The highly detailed sculpture of a woman carrying wheat and feeding a lamb is probably the Greek goddess Demeter or the Roman Ceres, both goddesses of the harvest and fertility. We’ve slashed the price of the metal and black marble Nicholas Mueller’s Sons clock to $2,610. I might regret it tomorrow, but for now I’m in spring cleaning frenzy!

Delft and Ceramics antiques dealsI’m even taking a clean sweep to selected antique and vintage Delft, Majolica, and ceramics.  I’ll miss some of these lovely pieces as they are so decorative around the gallery, but I’m consoled by knowing they will brighten someone’s home!

To see all our spring cleaning antiques deals, browse our online EuroLuxAntiques.com gallery. The final discount price doesn’t always show on the home page, so click through to the individual item details to see the lowest spring fling price! Don’t forget our always-free shipping in the Continental US and much of Canada. Happy shopping and happy Easter!

Client Spotlight: Renaissance Buffet & Antique Renaissance Style

I just came across these photos from a client who bought an antique Renaissance style buffet. As it is the 10th anniversary of EuroLux Antiques this year, I’ve been digging through quite a lot of old files, and I realized I’ve never shared these photos with you.

Tracy R. from Oxford, Alabama, bought this antique Renaissance style buffet some years ago. He came to pick up the oak buffet from us in the gallery, then he kindly sent these photos.

antique renaissance style

The antique Renaissance style buffet dating to 1900 looks wonderful in Tracy’s dining room. It looks so elegant against his dark green walls with the oval table and handsome dining chairs. Two glass candle holders on the table add an authentic finishing touch. The buffet or server is typical of antique Renaissance style furniture, featuring beautiful carvings on the doors and on the posts that support the upper part of the hutch.

Antique Renaissance style buffet

This second photo zooms out a little so you can see how the arm chair is upholstered in the same striped fabric as the dining chairs. That upholstery stripe is charming – classic but adding a great pop of color!

We carry a lot of antique Renaissance style furniture in the gallery, as well as some finely crafted reproductions. Typical pieces include buffets, chairs, tables, and chandeliers – so the style is especially popular for dining rooms. It creates a rather stately atmosphere for a dinner party! The Renaissance Revival style flourished in Europe from the 1830s to the end of the 19th century. At this time, furniture makers and craftsmen drew on classic Renaissance style that originated in Florence, Italy, in the 15th century.

antique Renaissance style buffet or server

They reinterpreted the style with their own creativity, but still the furniture showed the trademark antique Renaissance style details. The heavily-carved furniture tended towards large proportions and ornate carvings of classical motifs. Designs included scrollwork, arabesques, garlands of flowers and fruit, pediments, and columns. References to Greek and Roman mythology might include faces and cherubs.

This large antique Renaissance style buffet currently in our gallery is a fine example. Crafted in France in around 1900 in highly grained oak, the carved buffet is adorned with diamond medallions and foliage on the lower doors. The upper cabinet doors are carved with fabric swags and florals. At nearly nine feet high and six feet wide, the antique Renaissance Henry II buffet hutch is topped by a decorative crown. It offers plenty of serving and storage space and also has a full-length plate rack and two drawers for silverware. Pretty splendid, huh?

You can see more about this style, including photos of clients’ homes, in my other blog posts about antique Renaissance style furniture and decor. Or just browse the posts on antique Renaissance buffets.
