Client Spotlight: Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

I’ve often admired the Ambella Home Aspen sideboard that we sell, because it’s so handsome and chunky and rugged. It’s a James Bond of a sideboard! So I was delighted when our customer Amy B. in Wichita, KS, got in touch to tell us about the Ambella Home Aspen sideboard that she bought from us earlier this year. Before I show you how amazing Amy made the sideboard look, let me tell you a bit about the sideboard itself.

This is the Ambella Home brochure photo of the sideboard, and I like it because it’s dressed with charming blue and white ceramics. (We are big fans of antique and vintage blue and white Delft ceramics in the gallery.)Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

The antique-inspired sideboard looks old but it’s newly crafted by Ambella Home artisans for the Aspen collection. When I think of the Rocky Mountain ski town of Aspen, Colorado, I also think of handsome and chunky and rugged. There’s just no getting away from it!

Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard Details

The Ambella Home Aspen sideboard is carved from solid hardwood with an oak veneer top. It has a rich mahogany finish that gives a lot of depth and visual interest and adds to the sense of substance.

You can see from this close-up that every detail is beautifully crafted. Ambella Home furniture-makers are very skilled at giving an aged finish to make the sideboard look like a genuine antique. They also fit the furniture with nice antique-look handles and hinges, and the sturdy nailheads stand out against the planked wood.

So now let’s see how the sideboard looks in Amy’s house. Amy bought the piece in January but she wanted to finish up accessorizing it and putting the final touches on her decor before she sent a photo to us. Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

Wow! What a phenomenal job! I love how Amy tied the black wrought iron candle holders above the black TV screen with the table lamps, and even the black light switch! This is such a sensuous but sophisticated arrangement. It would create a wonderful focal point in an alcove or nook. And (if you take out the TV screen and electric lamps) I defy anyone to say this tableau couldn’t have appeared in an Old World house a few hundred years ago – especially a Spanish Mission style house. It’s just so evocative.  Thanks Amy for sharing your lovely photo!

Client Spotlight: Ambella Home Vanity & Game Room Renovation

Cathy B. bought an Ambella Home vanity from us for her home in Canyon Lake, TX. But as well as sending photos of the vanity in place, she also sent photos of other projects in her beautiful house. Cathy did a great job of describing the journey to her renovated “dream game room basement.”

before deck

Before…

Above is a ‘before’ shot of Cathy’s house. It was built in 2010 on the Guadalupe River, which is known for tubing and kayaking in the summer and trout fishing year round. Her family bought it as a weekend home in December 2012. “From the front of our house it looks like we have a two-story home,” says Cathy, “but we are on a terraced piece of property above the river and from the back we have 3 stories. The walk-in basement can only be accessed from the backyard. ”

after deck 2

…After

Cathy’s first project in May 2013 was to build a concrete deck with Santa Fe Stone topping it, as well as the existing sidewalk and patio on the ground floor. Apart from the lovely landscaping, can you spot the other major difference between the before and after shot? “One of the major things I wanted to change was the direction of the stairs,” says Cathy. “In the ‘before’ picture, they block the lower patio. I wanted a clear view when we built out the walk-in basement. In the ‘after’ picture they are out of the way. It made a world of difference.”

Bar and Games RoomThe next project, In August 2013, was to work on that unfinished walk-in basement! Cathy’s crew started to build out the bar and turn it into this incredible bar and game room called Guadaloopy’s!  Let’s see some of the transformation as it happened and I’ll let Cathy tell the story in her own words.

River View BeforeThis is how the unfinished basement started out. You wouldn’t think it was the same space, would you?  “We hired a great contractor (Trampus Smith at Smith Development in Canyon Lake) with a vision and great ideas,” says Cathy. “We wanted rustic and he found some old tin from a rusty roof.  We wanted barn wood and he found that and cut and stripped it to fit.  We wanted an old brick wall.  He located a couple of pallets in Houston and my husband and I took them to the river house.  I wanted a specific metallic epoxy floor in a very specific color and he figured that out.”
Bar renovation

He also knew a young furniture maker (Artisan Custom Crafting in Fredericksburg) and he had him design and build the bar. “They delivered it in hundreds of hand-crafted pieces and then jigsaw-puzzled it together!” Says Cathy. “They were amazing.”

Custom made home bar

Memorabilia on Home Bar Counter

Finally, Cathy and her husband wanted to put their personal memorabilia under an epoxy coating on the bar top. What a great idea and it looks terrific.

This is where EuroLux Home came into the picture! From our wide range of new Ambella Home sink chests and vanities Cathy spied one that she really liked. “We were undecided about our vanity in the bathroom until I came across this gorgeous piece and had to have it!”

Ambella Home Sink ChestThe Ambella Home vanity is crafted with a gorgeous rustic look and a vintage finish. The marble top and copper farmhouse sink was a great fit for the bathroom in Cathy’s basement bar and game room.

Ambella Home vanityHere’s the Ambella Home vanity positioned in its new home.  Doesn’t it look wonderful?  It’s a slender 36″ wide, but the chunky design and earthy marble and copper materials suit the decor perfectly.

I was so impressed by the amazing basement transformation made by Cathy and her husband. They really did a lot of work, and Cathy had a great eye for the details she wanted to make this the perfect game room and home bar for her family.

We love seeing creative home makeovers like this, so thank you Cathy for being so generous and sharing your photos and your story.  Keep us posted, Cathy…  now you’ve finished the home bar and game room, do you have any other room makeovers on your calendar?

Warm Up Your Decor With Copper Accents

I was reading an Elle Decor article called ‘Why You Should Decorate With Copper this Year.’ The article was actually written at the end of December 2013, but as copper has stayed popular for centuries, I don’t think it will fall out of fashion favor too fast! The article urges readers to “Try a new metallic this season… It’s a perfect way to add some winter warmth to a festive home.” That is true, although copper looks rich and welcoming all year, thanks to the beautiful color and reflective glow.

It got me thinking about the many ways to enjoy copper accents in your décor. Copper is so versatile, it can look traditional, modern, or exotic. It can appear perfectly at home in an ultra-glamorous urban setting or in a rustic Farmhouse kitchen.

copper accent vintage French coal scuttle planterCopper always looks great in traditional room designs, especially if you have an old piece that has developed a patina on the surface of the copper. For example, this vintage French coal scuttle with a blue and white Delft handle. The lions’ heads on the handles add to the charm of this nice piece, and it would make an attractive planter if you don’t want to display it by a fireplace.

In old European pubs you often see copper plates, jugs, and pitchers displayed on the walls. Decorative copperware is especially traditional in English and Welsh taverns. The vintage copper plate below conjures up the jovial atmosphere perfectly! Vintage copper accent in a Flemish copper plateThis large vintage copper wall plate actually hails from Belgium. The Flemish plate shows a group of merry villagers quaffing ale around a pub table, and it would look great hanging on a kitchen or dining room wall. The burnished tones of the plate add to the appeal.

Copper is often used in the kitchen of course. As I said in my blog post on Downton Abbey Kitchen Style, the warm glow and sturdiness of copper creates a unique sense of tradition and comfort. Copper is a good fit for kitchenware as it also has antibacterial properties. Bacteria doesn’t last very long on copper!

This photo shows a more unusual treatment of copper in the kitchen. It’s not just for pots and pans! The copper backsplash looks fabulous against the stainless steel appliances and the reclaimed wood floor. Downlighting beneath the wall cabinets are the perfect choice to bring out the luxurious and inviting tones of the copper. The highly polished surface bounces the light and the photo proves that copper looks elegant in more modern settings too. Copper in contemporary decor usually looks best if you choose streamlined shapes.

copper accent upcycled lampHere’s a way to see copper in a whole new light…. literally! The upcycled table lamp is hand-crafted to order and made with a pierced shade and recycled clear or blue glass insulators from old telephone poles.

The light shines through the pierced shade to create a delightful ambience in your office or study.

Hammered copper always looks so earthy yet so exotic. The sensuous hammered finish is a superb match for the rich burnt tones of the copper, as you can see in this  new Ambella Home sink chest from the Rustico collection. The hammered copper vessel sink stands out on the antiqued Travertine counter to evoke a romantic mood of yesteryear.

Ambella Home copper sink chest Do you have copper accents in your home decor? Where and how do you use copper? We’d love to hear about it. AimeeAvatar

The stunning fireplace above is one of many Ambella Home fireplaces we supply. Intricately carved detail on the cast stone Ambella Home Brookstone fireplace is accented by a luscious black fossil stone top. Many people know Ambella Home as the company that made sink chests popular. We have many Ambella Home sink chests in our online store, including the gorgeous WInslow sink chest below, boasting a golden agate fossil stone counter and etched brass details. It looks like a real antique chest, doesn’t it? Ambella Home sink chest at EuroLux Home Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture is beautifully hand-crafted using the same techniques as original antique English and French furniture. I blogged about Jonathan Charles furniture a while ago, including a video showing how these pieces are painstakingly crafted.
Jonathan Charles chairs at EuroLux HomeThese ladderback Jonathan Charles dining chairs in traditional Country Farmhouse style have wowed our customers this summer. They are crafted in walnut and the nice details and rich finish make it easy to see why they are such a hit!

Home Decor Trends: Nailhead Trim

Nailhead trim is yet another traditional design detail that is getting a lot of attention in this year’s lists of decor trends! A Better Homes and Gardens magazine article called What We Want in Our Homes: 2014 highlighted nailhead trim. They said: “It’s an ideal trend to embrace for larger investment pieces, such as upholstered chairs and sofas, because it’s timeless.”

Even though nailhead trim is especially fashionable now it is never really out of fashion, so you don’t have to worry about it looking dated in a few years. Nailhead trim is a classic detail that goes back 400 years.Antique French Hunting chairs

Nailheads were a practical way for European craftsmen to attach fabric or leather to the wooden furniture frame. For example, we’ve got this very rare set of antique French Hunting chairs from 1880 in the gallery. We have never seen embossed leather on a set of Hunting chairs before. But you can see that the beautifully embossed leather panels on the seat and back are attached to the ornately carved oak chair frames by attractive nailheads.

Let’s have a look at some of the other nailhead trim furniture in our gallery, whether traditional or more contemporary or transitional in design!

Nailhead trim on leather sofaThis new Chesterfield leather daybed is hand-made to order in the USA by an American company we work with. As you can see, the top grain leather upholstery is accented by a beautiful nailhead trim that gives it a traditional feel. Each brass nail is hand-driven on this nicely crafted piece. Like all the other custom-made in the USA leather sofas from that company, the daybed is available in many leather colors.

Red Leather dining chair nailhead trimThe decorative nails on these newly crafted Cloister style leather dining chairs are also applied by hand. The nailhead trim serves to accent the sleek lines of the wine red leather panels. These Cloister style chairs remind me of medieval castles and churches!

It’s a specialist craft to apply the nails because they have to be perfectly spaced and you have to get it right first time to avoid damaging the upholstery. The small, family-owned company that makes these chairs employs craftsmen who know how to drive the nails by hand, of course.

Leather stool with nailhead trimBut if you are are trying to do a DIY project and you don’t have the carpentry or upholstery skills, then I know that you can buy faux nailhead trim by the yard. I would not recommend doing that to antique or high-quality furniture! Also, the faux nailhead doesn’t look as good as the real thing because you can see the strips joining the mock nails. But it might be a fun way to freshen up a cheaper piece of furniture.

This new leather stool certainly does NOT rely on faux nailhead by the yard! It is hand-crafted by Woodbridge Furniture Company and I wanted to show it to you because the nailhead trim is so integral to the design. The bold nails outline the sculptural oval back, almost acting as jewelry for the furniture.

Nailhead trim on Ambella Home SideboardIf you need any more convincing that nailhead trim works across many styles of furniture, this fabulous Ambella Home sideboard from the Manhattan collection should do the trick. The angular demi-lune shaped sideboard boasts white leather-look upholstery on the doors, studded with nickel nailheads. Polished nickel ring door handles match the nailheads. The result is classic, high-end, and sophisticated, but with a little edge! The Ambella Home Manhattan collection also includes beds, dining chairs, and other furniture with this design, so ask us about it if you love the look as much as we do!

Best of April 2014: National Decorating Month

April was National Decorating Month and I hope that our blog posts helped inspire ideas for your home!  Let’s revisit some of our favorite antiques and decor posts from April.

National Decorating Month gray decorGray popped up as a hot decor trend for 2014, so in National Decorating Month I wrote a post on Gray Decor in the bedroom & living room. Gray is so adaptable. It works well with natural materials in a rustic country setting and in sophisticated city rooms. It’s great with exotic or heavy textures too, like this Castilian themed Ambella Home bedroom.
Madrid dining chair set
Our Madrid dining chairs client spotlight about Heidi’s chic dining room also emphasized the beauty of neutral colors. Heidi has a set of our linen-upholstered Spanish style chairs in her dining room.  The  pale gray paint on the walls and the light tones of the carpet and  chairs give a fresh twist to the room’s traditional Spanish Mission style influence. Heidi’s dining room is perfectly timeless but also perfectly NOW!
Hand-painted ceramics add a colorful touch in National Decorating MonthFor a splash of color, you don’t always need a big decorating project. I think it keeps the spirit of National Decorating Month to use smaller accents and creative touches to ring the changes in your home. For example, our client Bunny sent us this photo of her kitchen adorned with old Italian Deruta ceramics she bought from us. See more in our post on the sunny Mediterranean style of hand-painted Vintage Deruta Ceramics.

Antiques deals in National Decorating MonthDuring National Decorating Month, Greg and I worked hard at spring cleaning and sorting some of our older stock. The good news for you is that we’ve slashed prices by about 40% (or more!) on some beautiful antiques and vintage pieces that are still waiting for a good home. See some of our favorite bargains in our Spring Cleaning Antiques Deals post. Or visit EuroLuxAntiques.com to browse for deals on antique furniture, lighting, clocks, ceramics, and other smaller items.
Atlantique Antique Show
Finally, we celebrate our 10th anniversary in 2014 and we’re having great fun remembering highlights from our early years. If you want to know what NOT to do when a slab of marble on an Art Deco sideboard breaks just before a major antiques show, read this post on our First Atlantique Antique Show. We had a Laurel and Hardy moment involving the marble, too much glue, and a glass-topped hotel table. It’s funny to look back on, even if it wasn’t so funny at the time!

Thanks for spending National Decorating Month with us. We’ll share more ideas and inspiration about antiques and home decor in May.

Celebrating Beaujolais Nouveau Day!

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is around the corner, on November 21, 2013. That’s the day that this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau wines are released and festivals and events take place across Europe and in U.S. cities from Boston to Seattle.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day The French are protective about their wine. In fact, it’s written into French law that each year’s Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be released until exactly 12:01 am on the third Thursday of November!

The event is marked in France by fireworks and celebrations. For decades, vintners have raced to be the first to get their Beaujolais Nouveau wines on the tables of restaurants in Paris. Later, the race extended across the channel to London. Now it seems like it’s one big world-wide sprint to get the bottles out to all corners, so wine revelers can cheer: “Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!”

Beaujolais Nouveau Day Poster
The timing is great for American Thanksgiving Day, as Beaujolais Nouveau is said to pair well with turkey. Hats off to the French for their canny marketing techniques! A century ago, the wine, made of hand-picked Gamay grapes, was just a humble table wine made by Beaujolais locals for their own enjoyment, to celebrate the end of the harvest. Now it’s an international star. The young wine is generally best enjoyed by the May of the following year.

Whether you like Beaujolais Nouveau or prefer a more mature wine, we think any excuse for a celebration is good enough. So you can always get in the spirit by raising a glass of your favorite Napa Valley red in honor of Beaujolais Nouveau Day!

Woodbridge Bar StoolWhile we’re talking about wine, I had to share a photo of this new wine glass bar stool that is in our gallery, because the cut-out design on the back is so charming and clever. It’s perfect for a wine celebration or for a wine-lover’s home! Crafted by Woodbridge Furniture Company, the solid wood bar stool has a hand-rubbed and waxed distressed finish, so it looks like it could have come from an old Parisian bistro or wine bar. (We have this design in a counter-height stool too.)

Although I appreciate wine, I doubt that Beaujolais Nouveau will be on our Thanksgiving table. Greg and I will be enjoying Uncle Dick’s Famous Bloody Mary recipe, as you can see in my earlier post!

Ambella Home Enoteca Wine CabinetBut I know that many of our customers are real wine connoisseurs. I would love to have a large enough wine collection to take advantage of this incredible new Ambella Home Enoteca bar cabinet. (We recently added the Ambella Home Collection line of furniture to our gallery, as the quality, design, and craftsmanship meet our high standards!) The 8-foot-tall bar features tons of wine cradles, storage cabinets, and racks to hang stemware.

French Wine Server

I think this new, reproduction French server/sideboard with a built-in wine rack is more my size! With the whitewash finish on the wood and a lovely limestone tile top, the server looks as if it would be quite at home in a French farmhouse in wine country.

All this talk of wine has made me thirsty! A votre santé! If you celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau Day, we’d love to hear how you do it. Tell us in the comments box below.
