Princess Diana Family Home Althorp Furniture

Althorp House furniture inspirationThe Althorp Living History collection of furniture is based on the antique furniture from Princess Diana’s ancestral home in England. We are delighted that we are now supplying this elegant collection to our customers. Each piece is beautifully hand-crafted by Theodore Alexander furniture makers.

This is Althorp, the childhood home and final resting place of the late Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales. Her brother Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, still lives there and he has allowed Theodore Alexander access to make the Althorp furniture collection.

Althorp Furniture: Marlborough Room

The house was built in 1508 by the Spencer family, set in 550 acres of parkland near Northampton, 70 miles north of London. Althorp has 90 rooms that are all beautifully decorated with antiques added to the house by generations of Princess Diana’s ancestors over five centuries. This is the Marlborough Room. The Victorian rosewood dining table pulls extends to seat up to 42 guests!

Theodore Alexander Althorp BedEvery piece in the Theodore Alexander Althorp furniture collection is either an exact reproduction of furniture in the Althorp estate, or is inspired by it. What an amazing and exciting challenge that must have been for the master craftsmen at Theodore Alexander!

These pieces, like all Theodore Alexander furniture, are hand-crafted with superb finishes.

For example, this four-poster Althorp bed in the style of George III is crafted in handsome mahogany with a gorgeous flame mahogany veneer design and brass accents. The acanthus leaf motif, carved columns and spiral pine cone finials create a very luxurious impression.

Theodore Alexander Althorp DeskThis Althorp Living History desk is an absolutely darling piece of furniture. Imagine sitting down before the Louis XV Rococo style desk to write your journal or your correspondence!

This fine Althorp desk is crafted in mahogany and rosewood with cast brass accents on the cabriole legs. The serpentine top adds to the seductive appeal!

Theodore Alexander Althorp Sofa SetteeYou will have a great conversational starter when you welcome your guests to take a seat in this Theodore Alexander Althorp settee! Your friends will love to hear the story of its origins. The mahogany settee with leather upholstery is crafted in the Georgian style with shapely cabriole legs and a waisted back. It’s a charming settee and a real steal on the price for a settee with such a fine heritage. At time of writing it is $1759 with our always free shipping.

It’s an honor to supply this regal line of Theodore Alexander Althorp Living History furniture and home accessories to our customers. We hope you will browse our Althorp furniture here and let your imagination take flight!

Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine Crate Furniture : The Story

Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Collection FurnitureIn my last post I explained that EuroLuxHome.com is now the exclusive US distributor for Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine-Inspired Furniture. These pieces are very cool. The European reclaimed oak wood furniture is very high-quality and it is unique as it features drawers made from genuine upcycled wine crates from the Bordeaux region of France.

This Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Coffee Table was the #Trendy20 Best Design Nominee at the High Point Market Fall 2016. You can browse the Hobbs Germany collection on our website, and we are still adding new pieces.

Hobbs Germany Custom Restaurant Wine furniture

This was a custom order of the Hobbs Germany Bordeaux cabinets for a restaurant. It looks amazing, and the upcycled wine crate drawers are sturdily mounted on a steel base. I explained more about the furniture construction in my previous post.

Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine Cabinets Custom Restaurant

This is another shot of the custom order for the restaurant. If it is strong enough to stand up to restaurant use, it certainly has the muscle to last a long time in a domestic kitchen!

David & HenryIIThe designer, David Hobbs, is a British gentleman who moved to Germany in 1971 on active duty with the British military. He met Angelika, who is from Ramstein in Rheinland Pfalz. They married and decided to settle in Germany. They began importing British antiques into Germany in the 1970s and then moved into French antiques, specializing in sales to the US military community. Over time, David also began designing furniture and built his own company, Lifestyle Furniture, in 1981.

However, the Bordeaux Collection, launched three years ago, has become his true love and passion. The Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Collection is currently available in seven Finke stores throughout Germany. Finke is a high-end home goods and design store. David and Angelika are actively expanding distribution throughout Europe.

LeoHobbsEuroLux Home is now the exclusive distributor for Hobbs Germany in the United States.

On a personal note, David and Angelika also are animal lovers and they have just adopted two baby brother kittens. Their 16-year old Siamese, Kerri-Lee, will most likely not be happy! The kitten making himself at home in this photograph is Leo Hobbs.
Apparently Leo likes crystal!

Angelika

Angelika Hobbs is also a gourmet hobby cook who almost made it to the US TV show Iron Chef! She came in 2nd place in a competition of hobby chefs in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Angelika says cooking is her absolute favorite thing to do! We can’t wait until we have a chance to visit David and Angelika at their home next year and enjoy a gourmet meal!

Until then, we hope you enjoy browsing the new Hobbs Germany Bordeaux collection on our website. Feel free to ask any questions too… we love to talk about this gorgeous new wine-inspired line!

New Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine-Inspired Furniture

EuroLuxHome.com is now the exclusive US distributor for a very cool new line of furniture, Hobbs Germany!  We met David and Angelika at the High Point, NC, furniture market and fell in love with these unique pieces. They were looking for a US distributor who could handle shipments from Europe and a drop-ship model of business – voila! That’s us!

Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine Kitchen IslandThe wine-inspired furniture has a heavy-duty steel construction that is welded together for strength. The wooden tops are solid, European reclaimed oak. The kitchen islands have beautiful tops made of granite from Italy. But the coolest part is that the drawers, with heavy duty slide construction, are made from upcycled wine crates from the Bordeaux region of France. The stamps of the wine houses will of course vary from piece to piece but are all authentic. These are very high quality pieces and we felt they would be a great fit with our French antiques! See the full Hobbs Germany collection here.

Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine Bar CabinetAs the wood is reclaimed (perfect for the environmentally conscious and those who love upcycling!) there is heavy distressing that is a natural part of the product and will vary from piece to piece. The solid oak tops are stained a medium brown, which can also vary from piece to piece, as the natural wood soaks in the stain at different rates. The wood is then sealed and has a wax finish that is nice and smooth to the touch. The black Italian granite slabs used in the kitchen islands have a greyish brown veining.

Hobbs Germany Wine RackThe upcycled wine crates range in age to 10 – 15 years old and are actual wine shipping crates from true vineyards in the Bordeaux region of France with the stamps of the vineyards on the crates. The crates sit on and are adhered to solid oak shelves with heavy-duty, high-quality thick metal drawer slides.

Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine Box HutchCustomers may fill the drawers with 12 wine bottles without worry that the shelves cannot hold the weight. Also, as the crates are solidly attached to the oak shelves, they cannot be accidentally pulled out of the unit. For instance if a child were to pull a drawer of 12 wine bottle out on top of himself, he could be seriously injured. However, that could not happen with these drawers. Definitely German engineering. ;)

Trendy Wine Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Coffee TableThe Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Coffee Table pictured above was the #Trendy20 Best Design Nominee at the High Point Market Spring 2016.

Lamp Table with WheelsIn addition to the larger pieces which are wonderful for a dining room, kitchen, or home bar, the Hobbs Germany Bordeaux collection includes smaller pieces of furniture like this two-drawer lamp table. Very charming in your French-inspired decor!

In my blog post on the the story behind Hobbs Germany I share more photos and tell you about the British gentleman and his German chef wife who created Hobbs Germany. Till then, we are delighted that EuroLuxHome.com is the exclusive distributor for Hobbs Germany in the United States.

Paris Ritz Renovates Traditional Antique French Decor

I am pleased that the Paris Ritz renovation is finally completed and the hotel is open again! Here at EuroLuxHome.com we import all our fine antique furniture from Europe (hence the name!) and although some of the furniture comes from other European countries, most is from France. Paris is close to our hearts and the Paris Ritz is an icon. The building on Place Vendôme is beautiful and it is packed with antique furniture. So let’s see how it looks now, because even if we can’t all afford to stay there, we can enjoy the beautiful antique décor.

Ritz Paris Windsor SuiteThe photo above of the Windsor Suite gives a taste of what to expect. When Swiss hotelier César Ritz bought this private palace built in the early 18th century, he planned to turn it into a luxury hotel with: “All the refinement that a prince could desire in his own home.” He did a good job of it because when the Ritz opened in 1898 the most influential people started to stay there.  The Ritz boasted a private bathroom with each guest room! In those days, this was an unheard-of amenity. Boy, how times have changed. Even a Motel 6 room has its own bathroom now!

Paris Ritz Imperial Suite

In 2012 the current owner closed the Paris Ritz in order to restore it back to its former glory. The hotel is famous for its traditional 18th-century French décor, splendid and opulent, but the antique furniture and decorative items needed some work.

Ritz Paris suiteThey had craftsmen restore the antique furniture and light fixtures, and apparently the hotel expected a lot from the artisans who did the restorations. For example, some of the antique chairs were repainted 15 times to restore them to their original authentic colors!

Marie Antoinette Room Paris RitzAntique objects and art still fill the Ritz Paris after the renovation, and some of the suites replicate the furnishings that reflect the décor styles of the famous names that once stayed at the hotel. For example, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Coco Chanel, and Marcel Proust all had their individual styles. This is the Salon Proust:

salon Proust Paris Ritz

The New York-based French architect and designer Thierry W. Despont was in charge of this precious renovation. Yikes, he had to carry a lot of responsibility. He had to keep the essence of the hotel but also allow for modern technology to be included, and hey… as a New York architect he certainly knew that they had to upgrade the air-conditioning system!

It seems that the renovations at the Paris Ritz have been very popular. It looks like they did a great job of it. If you’ve stayed at the Paris Ritz since it reopened, tell us about it on the blog or even send some photos… we’d love to see them!

Charming Victorian Inns for a Cozy Getaway

If you’re looking for a cozy getaway this fall and winter, these charming Victorian inns are picture perfect! These beautiful Victorian homes have been made into inns and decorated in period style, including antique and vintage furnishings and fine antique-inspired furniture.

Hamilton-Turner Inn

The Hamilton-Turner Inn in Savannah, Georgia, was built in 1873 to be the home of Samuel Pugh Hamilton, known as “The Lord of Lafayette Square.” It was the first residence in Savannah with electricity. When the electric lights were turned on in 1883, those watching the house light up were afraid it would explode!

Hamilton Turner Inn Victorian Inn style

The mansion was featured in “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” as the location for many wild parties and the lavish decor really gives a sense of Savannah’s opulent style.  The individually designed rooms and a separate carriage house feature details like antique four-poster beds, claw foot tubs, romantic fireplaces and ornate draperies.

Chanticleer Inn

Chanticleer Guest House in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, has a very different feel! This rustic retreat (above) in a renovated 19th-century farmhouse and barn is decorated with period antiques and surrounded by forest and ponds. The country charm makes this a lovely place for a relaxing weekend getaway curled up by the fireplace, but there is plenty of pampering too with whirlpool tubs and tasty breakfasts delivered to your room!

Jeweled Turret Inn Victorian Inn

The Jeweled Turret Inn (above) in Belfast, Maine, is a more traditional Victorian B&B, and a Landmark on The National Register of Historic Places. Built on Penobscot Bay in 1898, the Victorian house has been restored and decorated in classic Victorian style including some lovely antique furniture and collectibles. Outside, guests can relax on two verandas with porch swings.  tourmaline-room Jeweled Turret

The “Tourmaline Room” shown above is decorated with antiques, lace, chintz, and a marble-topped bureau, and the bathroom features birds-eye maple woodwork and a Victorian claw-foot tub. The “Amethyst Turret” is a popular honeymoon room, located in an octagonal turret complete with a four-poster bed AND a fainting couch! It’s clearly designed for romance so the hero can sweep the heroine off her feet in several parts of the room!

If you know a beautiful Victorian Inn that you’d love to recommend to our blog readers, please leave a comment or tell us on our Facebook page.

And if you want more Victorian Inn inspiration, I hope that you’ll enjoy my earlier posts on Romantic Victorian Inns and Historic Inns.

Walk for the Animals & How Greg and I Met

KenDeniseBabiesDenise is a good friend who introduced Greg and me to each other back at summer camp in 1985 when we were 13. Denise works at the Seattle Humane Society and she’s participating in the Walk for the Animals on October 2.  EuroLux donates every year to support her.

She is a huge animal lover just like us. She and her husband Ken have a zoo too, as you can see from the holiday picture on the right. They have 5 dogs plus they often foster babies from the shelter.

Although I was very precocious as a child, by the time I hit middle school I had become extremely shy. My parents felt I needed a push to get over my lack of confidence so when I brought home a flyer about the Cullowhee Experience summer camp at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC, for the summer before ninth grade, they thought it was a fantastic idea. They signed me up even though it was a long trip from my home in Florida.

Aimee DeniseRoommatesThe first day of summer camp was painful. I didn’t know anyone and was too shy to start conversations. We were all gathered together to go to a dance in the gymnasium on the first night and I was delighted when a bubbly strawberry blonde from Tennessee smiled widely at me and introduced herself as Denise in her charming Southern accent. She was so friendly and kind and I immediately tagged along with her.

When we arrived at the gymnasium, she said she’d introduce me to all her friends, as she had been there the previous summer.

AimeeGreg1985She bounced us over to a cute guy with blondish-brown hair and a mouth full of braces and introduced him as her friend, Greg from South Carolina. That is when I remember meeting Greg. However, I must have been such a wallflower that I didn’t make much of an impression because Greg doesn’t remember that at all.

Greg remembers meeting me a few days later when we were all taken to a local carnival for the afternoon. I was standing at the bottom of the Ferris wheel when Greg walked up to me and asked if I wanted to ride. That was a pretty smooth line for a 13-year-old! I agreed, but he said I had to promise not to rock it because he didn’t really like heights. Of course, I swore that I would definitely not rock it and gave him a big smile. He really must have thought I was pretty cute, because in hindsight, I now know that Greg is terrified of heights.  (Remember our Antiquing and Ziplining in Asheville post?)

Ferris wheelAlthough I was shy, I have always loved to play practical jokes. While I swore I would not rock the Ferris wheel, I had absolutely no intention of keeping that promise. Amazingly, Denise snapped a photo of us on the Ferris wheel on the way up to the top. When we reached the very tippy-top, I began kicking my legs with all my might and really got the bench swinging – I found it hilarious that Greg just hung on with white knuckles, telling me to knock it off. And that is how Greg remembers meeting me – I really made an impression on that day! He still swears he will never ride a Ferris wheel with me again.

cullowhee friendsThat Cullowhee Experience summer was so magical. We lived in the dorms, ate at the cafeteria, attended classes and activities, and roamed around the campus. We played truth or dare in the cemetery at night, scaring each other and laughing non-stop. It was my first taste of true independence and I loved it. We all counted down the days until the next summer.

Aimee&DeniseWe went back the next two years and Denise was my roommate and best camp friend. After camp was over, Greg, Denise and I all kept in touch with letters. Ten years later, Greg and I reconnected and you know how that turned out.

Twenty-five years after Denise introduced me to Greg, we all got a chance to see each other in person again in 2010. Greg and I made a large delivery to a new bed and breakfast in Walla Walla, Washington and stopped to see Denise.

Denise Walk for the Animals

Besides all the great work the Seattle Animal Shelter does on a regular basis, they hold an annual Walk for the Animals, and we support Denise during her walk.
