Client Spotlight: Antique French Brittany Buffet with Jadeite Fire King

We delivered an antique French Brittany buffet to our customers in Charleston, SC, last month. Debbie and Drew visited our Gallery recently as their daughter attends Bob Jones University in Greenville, and Newberry is on the way home to Charleston on I-26. They both immediately fell in love with many of the pieces in our Gallery but their lower ceilings prevented them from buying many of the pieces they loved. However, Debbie found a very beautiful antique Brittany buffet that is on the diminutive side. It fit exactly on a wall in her kitchen and was the perfect piece to display her Jadeite Fire King collection.

Antique French Brittany Buffet with Jadeite Fire King

The Jadeite Fire King collection was made by Anchor Hocking in the 1940s. Debbie says that she first saw the Jadeite dishes on Martha Stewart’s show and she just loved the jade green color so she started collecting it couple of years ago. “Most of my finding has been in various antique shops around South Carolina,” said Debbie. “I actually found some measuring cups in your town before we came into your shop and purchase the buffet. I don’t have a large collection of the Jadeite, but am always on the lookout to add to my collection.”

Antique French Brittany BuffetWhen she sent us the photos of the buffet in her home, she added “We love it!”

We think it looks wonderful too! The antique Brittany buffet is heavily carved with scenes of French village life on the doors.

It is topped with a ship’s wheel which is a traditional symbol carved on Brittany style furniture as a tribute to French province’s maritime history.

Debbie loves ornate furniture and also stained glass lamps and unique light fixtures as you can see from these photos.

We were especially grateful to Debbie as she loves to cook and makes everything from scratch with organic ingredients. She made us each our own loaf of cinnamon bread and had it piping hot right out of the oven to give to us after we delivered the buffet! Of course, we ate both loaves right away and hardly waited for them to cool down – they were delicious! We hope we’ll be able to visit Debbie and Drew again – that bread was phenomenal! :)

Client Spotlight: Antique Chinese Wedding Bed

We imported this exquisite antique Chinese wedding bed to the USA in 2012…. it had previously inhabited a home schedule for demolition so it was wonderful to have the chance to give the Chinese wedding bed a new life! It was finally purchased by our customer Dongming in Greenville, SC, so it has landed in a place very different to its origins in the Zhejiang Province in Eastern China!

Antique Chinese Wedding Bed

Dongming and his daughter had driven to Columbia for the day and were on their way home to Greenville, when his daughter decided she really wanted to eat at Arby’s. They got off I-26 at Newberry, and while looking for Arby’s, they ended up on Main Street. Dongming decided he wanted to stop in some antiques shops, which is how he made his way to our EuroLux Home antiques store. He is a professor of Asian Studies, specializing in Chinese literature, so when he saw the antique Chinese wedding bed in our Gallery, he stopped in his tracks! He knew exactly what it was and also knew it would fit in his master bedroom. To top it all off, it was his birthday – so of course, he took it as a sign that it was fate and he was supposed to purchase the beautiful bed!

antique Chinese wedding bed

The Late Qing Dynasty antique Chinese wedding bed in red lacquered pine dates to around 1900 and it is very ornamental and ornate. Antique Chinese wedding beds like this were once used by royalty, and were often called “Eight Step Beds.”  It is divided into two areas, one for sleeping and the other for placing shoes and personal items as you get ready for bed. A Chinese wedding bed was actually used like an entire bedroom and Chinese women spent most of their time eating, embroidering, socializing, and sleeping in this area.

Greg and I were out of town at the furniture market in North Carolina when Dongming purchased the bed, and we already had deliveries scheduled for the following week in Georgia. However, Dongming was leaving to take a group of students on a study abroad tour in China for the summer and he really wanted to have the bed delivered prior to his departure.

antique Chinese wedding bed in partsI stayed up until 4 am the night before the delivery in order to get all 50 pieces of the bed cleaned, waxed, and ready to be delivered, but I made it happen!

The bed comes apart in about 50 pieces and is completely held together with tenon and mortise joints – no hardware at all! This is a photo of about half of the bed pieces.

It took about two hours to reassemble it in Dongming’s home, but it looks great! The bed features various carvings of people and traditional Chinese symbols, gilded with a very fine layer of gold.

antique Chinese wedding bedDongming is planning to use the Late Qing Dynasty bed on a daily basis, so this very beautiful bed will continue to be loved and cherished. We’re so glad the superb antique Chinese wedding bed was saved and it found a new home!

Customer’s Newberry Cam Davis Mansion and Antiques in Magazine

One of our most popular customer spotlights gave a tour inside Tamra’s Classic Newberry Mansion, complete with antique furniture purchased from us at EuroLuxHome.com.  So, we were delighted to come across a feature about Tamra’s home in Columbia Living Magazine: The Summer House. The article talked about some of the furniture Tamra purchased from us and we found out some new facts about Tamra’s house. Here is the update!

This is Tamra’s beautiful Greco-Roman mansion in Downtown Newberry, SC. It is so splendid it is hard to believe that at one time the house was at risk of being torn down because it was in such poor repair. Tamra and previous owners have put a lot of work into restoring it to its original glory when it was built in the 1890s!  Outside of Newberry House

According to the Columbia Living Magazine article, the house was originally owned by John Harrison “Hack” Summer, hence the name “The Summer House.”  It was built by Newberry contractor C. C. Davis, more often known as Cam Davis. A native of North Carolina, Cam Davis came to Newberry in 1884 to build the Newberry Cotton Mill. He went on to build many well-known residences, public buildings and churches in Newberry between 1884 and 1916. Pair of antique Mechelen buffetsWe discovered from the magazine article that The Summer House was designed by a 16-year-old. It’s amazing to think that such a young man could design this amazing neoclassical mansion! Craftsmen worked on the house in Newberry during the winter because in the summer they were working on the famous Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. The magazine article drew attention to the pair of antique Mechelen buffets flanking the entryway. These are two of the pieces Tamra bought from us.

Antique Mechelen Buffet

The article praised the heavily-carved cabinets’ “beautiful woodwork and stained glass insets.” The carving and stained glass are typical of Mechelen furniture, as you can see in my blog post What is Mechelen Style Antique Furniture?

Antique French Table Chairs dining room

The formal dining room also received attention in the article, which made us happy as Tamra bought the French Country Louis XV extending refectory table in walnut from us, as well as two sets of antique French Hunting chairs dating to the 1880s. The article reads: One of their favorite rooms in the home is the formal dining room. “We’re not finished in this space, but we’ve got the parquet French walnut table with the French thrones as a centerpiece. There is really beautiful woodwork on the queens,” Tamra said.

It’s wonderful to find out more about this beautiful house that Tamra has decorated so elegantly. You can read the full Columbia Living Magazine article here and also see more photos of the room interiors and antique furniture in my original blog post: Antique French Furniture in Classic Newberry Mansion.

Client Spotlight: Antique French Renaissance Dining Chairs

We really admired this set of four antique French Renaissance dining chairs when we bought them and had them shipped back from Europe to America. We were delighted when Iris L. in Texas bought the antique French dining chairs and sent us a photo of them in her home.

Antique French Renaissance Dining Chairs

These are the antique French chairs carved in the Renaissance or Henry II style. The dining chairs date to about 1900 and they are very handsomely designed and carved in solid oak wood. We were impressed by the carvings of two birds nestled in the intricate flower design on the chair back. The pair of lions gazing out from the finials topping the chair posts also add a noble touch. The attractive brass handles on the top of the chairs are typical of antique French Renaissance chairs. In this photo, you can also see the legs with a carved bell or tassel just below the seat. These legs look wonderfully regal!

Antique French Dining Chairs

Iris sent us this photo of the four antique French Renaissance dining chairs in her dining room, and we love how they look! Iris agreed… she said “Love the Chairs.”
The chairs are the perfect match for Iris’ dining room, with that lovely wood floor and the very nice dining table. The traditional appeal of this dining room is hard to beat. The brass handles on the chairs create a nice silhouette ad the gallery of spindles set in the backs of the chairs also make a decorative statement. Overall – it’s a winner!

We are delighted that these beautiful antique French Renaissance dining chairs found such an elegant home. Thanks Iris for giving us a peek into your home!

Client Spotlight: Jonathan Charles Santos Tables Klismos Chairs

I loved seeing these photos of the new Jonathan Charles Santos tables and Klismos chairs in our customers’ home. I especially love seeing the living room all beautifully decorated for Christmas! Our clients Dawson and Randy in West Granby, CT, bought the chairs and side tables in two separate purchases more than a year apart, but the pieces blend together perfectly, as does everything else in their living room. This couple has a great sense of style!
Jonathan Charles Santos Furniture in Client home

Let’s start with the chairs in the front of the photo, loyally guarded by Mr. Waggles the dog! The new Jonathan Charles Santos chairs are based on Art Deco styling from the 1920s and the Klismos chair design boasts the curved splayed legs that were a feature of the Klismos chairs first created by the ancient Greeks. Splendid satin rosewood veneer complements the black leather upholstery and ebonized arms and legs add the finishing touch to these chairs.

Jonathan Chalres Santos Ebonized Rosewood tableOn either side of the sofa you can see the new Jonathan Charles Santos Collection side tables. The curved ebonized legs and gorgeous rosewood table top make a great match for the chairs.

The overall effect of these exquisitely crafted pieces is timelessly elegant and serenely sleek.

They are ideal for Dawson and Randy’s living room, which is so nicely tailored with an emphasis on the crisp tones of black, white, and red.  The Christmas tree makes the space look very festive!

Here’s a view from another angle. Mr. Waggles hasn’t moved an inch! He looks very comfortable surrounded by this chic room design, which also offers a warm welcome thanks to the red tones and the softening effect of the blinds alongside the clean lines of the furniture.

This final view shows the marvelous height of the space. I enjoy the wall art and the panel, and the way the checkerboard tile floor that we can glimpse in the hallway adds to the classic Art Deco feel of this room. I imagine that Randy and Dawson will enjoy some very merry holiday celebrations in this space! And I also love that they included Mr. Waggles and Beanie the kitty in the photos. If you can’t see Beanie, look by the right leg of the console table in the hallway…. Beanie is black and white and well-camouflaged!

Thanks to Randy and Dawson for sharing your photos and getting us all in the holiday spirit, as well as giving us all lots of great home decor ideas with your supremely elegant home.

Client Spotlight: King Henry Bed Bench

A bed bench at the end of the bed is one of the hardworking unsung heros of the bedroom. Today we are going to celebrate the bed bench by showing photos of a fabulous King Henry bed bench in our customer’s bedroom.

King Henry Bed Bench BG-362Anne F. in Texas bought this handsome new King Henry style end of the bed bench from us. The antique-inspired bench is beautifully crafted with a solid wood construction that has a rustic pecan finish. (This bench is also available with an antiqued white finish.) The eye is drawn down to the gorgeous curvy stretchers crowned with bold finials. Reeded detail on the stretchers add another touch of elegance.  Here’s how it looks in Anne’s bedroom:

King Henry Bench for Bedroom

“It’s perfect! Just beautiful,” said Anne in her email to us, and we agree! It works perfectly in Anne’s pretty bedroom and it’s a great match for the bed. The neutral fabric upholstery on the seat is tufted to enhance the traditional appeal and bring yet more comfort and luxury into the bedroom. Everyone thinks about armoires, dressing tables, chests of drawers and of course beds as the stars of the bedroom, but a bed bench is not only highly useful, it often adds the icing on the cake by making the room look more finished.

King Henry Bed Bench

When you add a bed bench to your bedroom, you’ll soon be wondering how you ever lived without it! It’s the perfect place to sit down and put on your socks or shoes, or perhaps pause a while to take a phone call without messing up your tidily made bed!

When choosing a bed bench, you want to pick one that is slightly narrower than your bed, as Anne has done, and as a rule of thumb you probably want a bench that is slightly lower than the bed too.

Thank you Anne for sending the photographs. We are so delighted to see how fabulous the bed bench looks in your home. Those curvy stretchers really do add a very refined decorative touch!

Client Spotlight: Antique French Hunting Nightstand

Our creative customer Sarah K, in Seattle, WA, bought an antique French Hunting nightstand from us, but she had other plans for this lovely piece rather than put it in the bedroom. Sarah placed the French Renaissance Hunting style nightstand in her living room and we think that’s a great idea. When Sarah sent us these photos of the nightstand in her home, she said, “We love it!” We do too!

Antique French Hunting style nightstand

An antique nightstand or bedside table works beautifully as an end table, side table or accent table or as a hall table or plant stand. The cupboard provides storage and the drawer also gives you space to slip small items like coasters or perhaps your remote controls. The two levels offer plenty of space for your bedtime reading and other nighttime necessities, but if you are not using the cabinet in the bedroom then that shelf provides space for a stack of magazines or to display a pretty bowl or small collectibles.

Antique French Nightstand

This photo shows more of Sarah’s elegant living room. I love how she ties the room together with blue and green in the sofa, blanket, pillow, painting, house plant, and also that little decorative blue bowl!  This angle also shows off the decorative appeal of the barley twists on the nightstand. They give a structural look that is quite noble. The lower cabinet is framed with carved swirls and the cupboard door is accented by a square panel.

Antique French Hunting Nightstand cabinet

This gives the full gorgeous effect from the other direction! We actually have a similar antique French Hunting nightstand in the store at time of writing, so if you are interested in snapping it up for yourself, get in touch soon and ask for item number 18-16!

Sarah is not the only customer who took a creative approach to her antique nightstand. Our customer Kathleen G.  in Arcadia, OK, uses her Henry II nightstand in the kitchen. You can see how well that works in our blog post Creative New Use for Antique Nightstand.

Thank you Sarah for sending photos of your lovely home and we hope you enjoy using the antique French Hunting nightstand for many years.

Client Spotlight: Woodbridge Table for Knight Kiplinger

This client spotlight about our Woodbridge Marseille console table is pretty neat – this is Knight Kiplinger’s home!

Knight Kiplinger is the celebrated economic journalist who heads the Kiplinger financial media company including Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and Kiplinger.com. He is also a book author and you have probably seen or heard him as a guest on many TV and radio shows like the Today Show, Charlie Rose, Diane Rehm Show, and CBS This Morning.

Woodbridge Neoclassical console tableThis is his second order with us. We guess he knows how to handle his money and make the most of every dime, so we are very happy that he decided to spend some of his hard-earned dollars with us!

His last order was for this lovely mahogany Neoclassical Woodbridge console table shown at left, our item number WB-199, for his home in Washington DC.

Woodbridge Marseille Console tableThis time he contacted me to order the elegant Marseilles console table (item WB-612, shown right) for his second home in Maryland. The console table is beautifully hand-waxed and designed with traditional French style. Made in solid wood with a rich cherry veneer, the console table features chic curving sides. The two drawers are crafted with a dovetail construction, and the console table is hand-rubbed and distressed to create an authentic-looking aged patina.  Here is a photo of the table in Knight Kiplinger’s home.

Marseille console table

Knight Kiplinger said, “It took me this long to get around to hanging some art over it, on an 11-ft wall in the upstairs hall of our 1830 Maryland home. Lovely setting, and the table is just what we needed for displaying books and objets d’art.”   I love the look of his gallery of art above the table, and the sculptures look perfect on the lower shelf.

Marseille console table hallway

This photo gives a better view of the table’s beautiful curved silhouette, and also gives you another chance to admire the statues! Mr Kiplinger asked, “You wouldn’t have, might you, an identical table, but shorter?” So now we have been working on finding him a third table! Stay tuned… we hope to bring you another perfect match.

Thank you to Knight Kiplinger for so kindly giving us a brief glimpse into his home. What can we say? We love his taste in console tables!

If you are a frequent reader of our antiques and home decor blog, you will remember that this Woodbridge Marseille console table also looked beautiful in the hallway of our customer Liz in San Francisco.

Client Spotlight: Scarborough House Bookcase

We are delighted that a superbly crafted new Scarborough House bookcase looks so great in our customer’s home in California, especially because this is a tale of a false start that transformed into a happy ending!

Christine B. in Pebble Beach, CA, originally found me on Ebay and ordered a Woodbridge Furniture Company bookcase. The one she chose was on back order so she decided to switch to this Scarborough House bookcase.

Scarborough House Country BookcaseThe handsome and sturdy new Scarborough House bookcase is hand-planed by Scarborough House craftsmen for a beautiful texture and a heavily distressed finish on the wood that looks authentically aged. Touch dimmer lighting inside the bookcase illuminates books or other items and collectibles on display behind the glass doors. The solid brass handles and long brass hinges add another decorative touch to this high-quality bookcase. Here it is in Christine’s home:

Scarborough House Bookcase in client home

To give you an idea of scale, the bookcase is nearly 6 feet long. Doesn’t it look wonderful? I love the way that Christine has arranged her gallery of wall art above the bookcase. The grid of images is a nice echo of the grid look of the front of the glass door cabinet. The look is orderly, serene and classic.

Scarborough House Distressed bookcase

This view of Christine’s hallway is just breathtaking. I love the archway, the wood plank floor and the iron lanterns. I want to walk down the hallway and enjoy the views into each room that I’m sure are equally as elegant. The purity of line in this photo shows what a great eye Christine has for interior design!

Christine received the bookcase on July 4, of all celebratory dates, so it arrived with happy Independence Day vibes! Christine wrote to us: “Dear Aimee, the Scarborough Bookcase was just delivered and looks fantastic! Delivery was AAA+++. Thank you very much!”

So, it seems that the way things turned out is just perfect, even though this is a different bookcase than the one Christine originally intended to order. Sometimes, fate has its own ideas about home decor! Thank you Christine for sending these fine photos and we hope you enjoy the bookcase for many years.

Client Spotlight: Louis XV Vanity Chest of Drawers

Vintage Louis XV Vanity ChestInterior designer Debbie at DMS Interiors in Sarasota, FL, found our Houzz.com listing for this pretty vintage Louis XV marble-top vanity chest of drawers with mirror.

Debbie thought it was the perfect fit for her client’s project in Sarasota. The family wanted to change one of their guest rooms to have a bit more of a feminine aesthetic for a new guest, a close friend of the daughter.

The 1930 vintage French Rococo mahogany chest of drawers with its beautiful white marble top, charming ornate metal handles, curvy shaping and scrolled feet was a wonderful touch for the room!

As the daughter’s friend was arriving the following week, Debbie wanted to know if we could expedite the shipping rather than take the normal three or four week time frame for white glove delivery. We always try to do everything we can for our customers so we decided to make it happen! Customer home in FloridaDelivering antique furniture We left early in the morning and made it to the family’s address in Sarasota just before 7 pm. The client’s home has a gorgeous view of the water and quite a wonderful pool too. The guest bedroom is upstairs to the right, overlooking the pool. However, the flight of 20 steps was a bit of work with such a heavy vintage vanity chest of drawers!

Luckily the marble and mirror come off the chest for safe transport. Greg and I took out the drawers too to make it a bit more manageable for me. I may only be 5 foot 2 inches, but I can carry furniture when I need to!

Vintage Louis XV chest

We hefted it up the stairs and put it in place, where it will enjoy a beautiful view for years to come. This is such a delightful room and the Louis XV vanity chest of drawers looks terrific. This is the view from the house:

Since we were in Florida, Greg and I decided to visit Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando before heading home. Greg went with family when he was two years old, so he didn’t remember much. I grew up in Florida and have been many times, but a day at Disney is always fun. We hit all the highlights – Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion (Greg’s favorite), Jungle Cruise and my favorite, the Enchanted Tiki Room.

Disney's Magic Kingdom in Orlando

Much has changed in Fantasy Land since I was there last year, and the changes were interesting to see. My secret tip if you happen to be traveling to Disney, is to stop in Gatson’s Tavern in Fantasy Land. They have created a very delicious apple cider slush drink called LeFou’s Brew that is not to be missed on a hot Florida day!
