Bookshelf: French Country Home Decor

I recently wrote a blog about French Country Farmhouse furniture and decor because it is one of the most popular styles in our EuroLuxHome.com online furniture and home accessories store. French Country look is a timeless style that looks charming and is comfortable and easy to live with. These new books will give you more ideas for decorating your home in this style!

Perfect French Country: Inspirational interiors from rural France

Perfect French Country InteriorsShowing how to live the good life wherever you are, author Ros Byam Shaw visits rural French country homes to share their inspiration.

A peek inside these private residencies reveals the details that create the comfort and joie de vivre of Frech life, whether we’re looking at traditional architecture like stone fireplaces or simple decor details like a row of gourds and earthenware jugs decorating the top of an old wooden kitchen buffet.

My French Country Home: Entertaining Through the Seasons

My French Country HomeSharon Santoni lives in a countryside home in Normandy, France, and her new book focuses on ways to entertain in true French style. Of course, the French make entertaining look so easy, and this book tries to help the rest of us capture that same spirit. The book combines personal stories of her life in France with photos of table arrangements and room or outdoor settings. There are some recipes too!

The book is arranged by season with sections including A Table in the Forest, Picnic by the River, Breakfast on the Terrace, Fireside Cooking and many more. Santoni actually grew up in England but she seems to have gone native over her years in France! I mentioned her book My Stylish French Girlfriends in a previous blog post on French Country Style and Decor.

Country Living Salvage Style: Decorate with Vintage Finds

Country Living Salvage StyleMy third pick is published by the team at Country Living magazine. It is not specifically about French Country style, but the approach is definitely in keeping with the French Country idea of mixing old and new and repurposing simple everyday items. One of the key aspects of French Country style is that furniture and accessories look like they have been collected over the years, and every piece has a story.

The book is written by Leslie Linsley and she gives lots of inspiring ideas about how to decorate with salvaged and vintage items such as old windows, mailroom filing cabinets, wicker furniture, buckets and bathtubs to create very personal rooms filled with character.

Regency Style Furniture: Timeless British Majesty

We have many antique-inspired pieces in our online furniture store that draw on the classic Regency style. This new furniture is either based on actual antique Regency pieces, or it takes its design cues from the style. So what is Regency style? It is named for the time in England in the early 1800s when George IV served as Prince Regent. This meant that he ran the country on behalf of his father who was unfit to carry out his duties as king due to mental health issues. George IV became king himself later, but the name Regency style has stuck as a way to describe furniture crafted during this era.

The furniture developed its look from Neoclassical Georgian furniture but it went even further with themes and motifs inspired by ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian architecture and design. It has a majestic look, but it is not overly fussy.

THeodore Alexander Regency CabinetThe furniture is generally large with a stately and monumental feel. It is usually made in dark woods to add to the imposing effect, like this new Theodore Alexander Regency cabinet above, crafted with mahogany and satinwood veneers with brass moldings.

Jonathan Charles Regency Console TableMahogany was highly popular with furniture makers, and rosewood and zebrawood veneers also added impressive surface effects. The new mahogany Jonathan Charles late Regency console table above shows how great mahogany can look, especially with classic banding. The new mahogany Jonathan Charles Regency style chest of drawers  below is another example.

Regency Chest of Drawers Jonathan CharlesAlthough designed to impress, the furniture profile tended to be fairly streamlined with clean edges. There were no frills, rather a more masculine approach of straight lines, crisp arches, and geometric shapes. The clean-edged look was sometimes ornamented by brass ring handles.  Stanley Furniture Regency Mirror

Other decorative motifs included classical symbols such as laurel wreathes, acanthus leaves, rosettes, masks, and mythological beasts including the Egyptian sphinx and griffins. The draping on this new Stanley Furniture Regency mirror with its gold and champagne silver leaf finish shows the regal pomp!

This style also featured ornate gold ormolu mounts and classical and military motifs. Brass accents and inlays were frequent decorations, and we also see metal paw feel on chairs and tables or claw and ball feet.

This new Jonathan Charles Regency style chair is a good example of how dramatic yet restrained the gilded look can be, especially against the chair’s ebonized black paint finish.  If you want gold in your space without it being too feminine, the Regency style is a great choice for you! Regency Chair Jonathan Charles Brass ring handles sometimes featured lion heads to add to the sense of majesty, as in this new mahogany and brass Theodore Alexander Regency style occasional table adorned with lion masks.

Theodore Alexander Lion Regency TableThe Regency style is often reproduced today by contemporary furniture makers with wonderful attention to detail. They look like original furniture of the period, but they are often scaled down in size to suit the size of today’s homes.  Check out all our new Regency style furniture and if you have an interior design scheme in this style, we’d love to see photos!

Client Spotlight: Scarborough House Bookcase

We are delighted that a superbly crafted new Scarborough House bookcase looks so great in our customer’s home in California, especially because this is a tale of a false start that transformed into a happy ending!

Christine B. in Pebble Beach, CA, originally found me on Ebay and ordered a Woodbridge Furniture Company bookcase. The one she chose was on back order so she decided to switch to this Scarborough House bookcase.

Scarborough House Country BookcaseThe handsome and sturdy new Scarborough House bookcase is hand-planed by Scarborough House craftsmen for a beautiful texture and a heavily distressed finish on the wood that looks authentically aged. Touch dimmer lighting inside the bookcase illuminates books or other items and collectibles on display behind the glass doors. The solid brass handles and long brass hinges add another decorative touch to this high-quality bookcase. Here it is in Christine’s home:

To give you an idea of scale, the bookcase is nearly 6 feet long. Doesn’t it look wonderful? I love the way that Christine has arranged her gallery of wall art above the bookcase. The grid of images is a nice echo of the grid look of the front of the glass door cabinet. The look is orderly, serene and classic.

This view of Christine’s hallway is just breathtaking. I love the archway, the wood plank floor and the iron lanterns. I want to walk down the hallway and enjoy the views into each room that I’m sure are equally as elegant. The purity of line in this photo shows what a great eye Christine has for interior design!

Christine received the bookcase on July 4, of all celebratory dates, so it arrived with happy Independence Day vibes! Christine wrote to us: “Dear Aimee, the Scarborough Bookcase was just delivered and looks fantastic! Delivery was AAA+++. Thank you very much!”

So, it seems that the way things turned out is just perfect, even though this is a different bookcase than the one Christine originally intended to order. Sometimes, fate has its own ideas about home decor! Thank you Christine for sending these fine photos and we hope you enjoy the bookcase for many years.

French Country Farmhouse Style: Elegant Comfort

The timeless French Country Farmhouse style of furniture is rich in nostalgia, and it is one of the most popular styles in our EuroLuxHome.com online store. Whether our customers choose genuine antique French Country Farmhouse furniture imported from France or newly crafted pieces inspired by the style, they love the refined but comfortable look!

As the name suggests, there is a rustic element to French Country Farmhouse style that celebrates the natural beauty of rural France. This design style places a great emphasis on traditional craftsmanship, natural materials and a sense of harmony and balance.

Imagine walking into a charming old French farmhouse deep in the hills of a wine region or one surrounded by fields of golden corn. The kind of decor and furnishings you might see are exactly the kind we expect of this design style.

You might see a large wooden table in the kitchen, possibly crafted in pine or another light or medium wood. Simple furniture features graceful lines and a slightly weathered look, or you will see cabinets with a distressed paint finish.

Things are not too matchy matchy, no matched sets of furniture, yet everything works together. The furniture and accessories have the look of being collected over the years, combining family heirlooms with newer pieces.

Everything is effortless, nothing is trying too hard to impress. Nothing is shiny or too crisp and perfect. These homes look lived in and you know that the people living there are very happy and content indeed!

We have a lot of new, vintage and antique French Country Farmhouse pieces in our online EuroLuxHome.com furniture and home accents store and shipping is always free. For example, this fine walnut vintage French Country sideboard hits all the style points!

Vintage French Country Sideboard Chairs with a ladder back are also ideal for this look, and chairs and benches often feature woven rush or rattan seats. These new French Country dining chairs in our store have intricate carvings in the walnut wood and hand-woven rattan seats.

Toile de Jouy is a classic for French Country Farmhouse linens and other soft furnishings.

Rooster Aubusson Throw Pillow HandwovenIn addition to French Country Farmhouse antique furniture and newly crafted pieces, we are pleased to stock all kinds of vintage and new home accessories that look perfect with this style of decor.

Earlier this year I mentioned that Farmhouse style is a leading decor trend right now and I am not surprised! It is more than just a fleeting fashion. There is a timeless, serene and nurturing quality to this interior design look that is comforting in our rapidly changing and stressful times!
