Top 12 Antiques and Home Decor Blog Posts 2016: Part 1

As we step into 2017, it’s time to remember our most popular antiques and home decor blog posts from 2016! We’ve had a lot of good news this year, and we’ve loved hearing from our customers too. Not only do many customers return to us time and again to buy antique, vintage, and new furniture and home decor accents, but they also send us photographs for our client spotlights so we can see how their purchases look in their home!

We’ll start with the first of our favorite 12 antiques and home decor blog posts of 2016.

1.  Antique Chairs & Aztec Calendar Stone Table

Antique Chairs and TableOur customer Bernard really caught our attention when he told us a story featuring antique French Renaissance chairs, the famous Aztec calendar stone and the singer Axl Rose, of the band Guns N’ Roses!

Bernard lives in Hawaii, so his house happens to enjoy fantastic views too. See more photos and read the whole story here.

2. Antique French Hunting Bed Converted in Size

French Antique Bed Converted in sizeWhen our customer Erin was moving from Arkansas to Colorado, she has us ship an antique French Hunting bed to her new home. She also needed the bed size converted from full size to queen size. We were happy to oblige!
The lavishly carved antique bed looks wonderful in Erin’s new bedroom, as you can see in the full Antique French Hunting Bed story here.

3. Antique Furniture in the Kitchen

Antique Renaissance Buffet Kitchen DinerMost people don’t think about the kitchen when they are looking for antique furniture, but there are many ways to enjoy antiques as part of your kitchen furniture. When I was writing about the renovation of our 1920s vintage bungalow kitchen, I was inspired to write about using antique furniture in the room that is for many the heart of a house.
The resulting Antique Furniture in the Kitchen blog post shows how some of our customers have done just that!

4. Leather Furniture Care and Top-Grain vs. Split-Grain Leather

Leather sofas, chairs, stools and benchesAT-4 Leather Chesterfield Settee are among our top sellers in our new furniture collections. People love the high-quality, traditional look and the durability of leather in everyday use. One of the leather furniture makers we work with is a small family business, and they gave me some great info for my blog post about different types of leather and leather care.
We got lots of good feedback on this post!

5. EuroLux In the News

Talbots EuroLux Antique storeEuroLux Home got quite a lot of media coverage in 2016. This included two articles in the Newberry Observer about how Greg and I fell in love – and at the same time fell in love with antique furniture! – and then how we started our antique furniture business.

We also appeared on TWC News when “Around Carolina” filmed in our antiques gallery in Newberry, SC, to highlight us as one of the places to visit in our historic town.  My blog post about EuroLux in the News and Newberry Attractions including Newberry Oktoberfest gives links to the video and the articles.

6. Charming Victorian Inns

Hamilton-Turner InnOur blog readers and customers love antiques and beautiful interior design, but they also love to travel! Greg and I love to travel too, so I often write about places to stay that have a historical aspect or inns and hotels that are furnished with antiques. My blog post about Charming Victorian Inns for a Cozy Getaway was a favorite this year. Even if you can’t visit these destinations, you can take inspiration from the photos!

Happy new year to everyone! If you enjoyed this, see the rest of our picks for the year! Here’s the link for the Part 2 final six of our top 12 decor and antiques blog posts of 2016.

Client Spotlight: Jonathan Charles Marquetry Table

We were greeted with a friendly woof at the door of Erin’s beautiful home in Arlington, VA! Bo, the charming Golden Retriever, had his favorite toy in his mouth and wanted to share it with me. We were there to deliver a gorgeous round center table from the high quality manufacturer, Jonathan Charles, and I think you’ll agree it looks smashing in its new home.

The veneered top of the beautiful new Jonathan Charles center table (item JC-429 on our EuroLuxHome.com website) is spectacular with its hand-crafted, intricate design. Each piece of the parquetry inlaid design of intertwined ribbons is carefully hand-applied. Here is a bird’s-eye view of the Jonathan Charles round table top. This will give you a better idea of the intricate detail on the marquetry veneer:

And here is another close-up of the Jonathan Charles center table or accent table, with its lower tier shelf and curvy saber legs. It’s a very striking design, isn’t it?

Jonathan Charles marquetry tableI especially love how Erin arranged this space so that the curved design of the light walnut table echoes the curved design of the handsome vintage Art Deco grandfather clock on the back wall.  The clock was brought back from Germany by family members.

hallway with Jonathan Charles round accent tableThe warm walnut wood tones of both pieces are a perfect complement in the space with the dramatic painted navy walls and bright white molding and trim. It is obvious that Erin has a flair for interior design. Her choice of rugs in both the foreground, and in the living room behind, and even the throw pillows on the sofa, tie all of the colors in the two spaces together and draw the viewer’s eye into her lovely home.

The beautiful piece of art on the wall is part of the family’s growing art collection and was found on a vacation in Louisiana and shipped home. What a warm and inviting entryway space with living room beyond – we’re impressed!

Thanks for letting us share photos of your lovely home, Erin, and thanks to Bo for greeting us so warmly too!

Things We Love: German Christmas Markets

One of the things I miss the most about living in Germany, especially at this time of year, is browsing around the Christmas markets, or Weihnachtsmarkte, that are found in big cities and small towns across Germany. You may have even heard of the most famous Christmas markets in Nurnberg or Munich, but my favorite Christmas market is in Cologne.Cologne Christmas Market

Sitting at the base of the huge Gothic Cathedral, the Christmas market fills the large town square with booth-after-twinkling-booth of things to delight your eye!

CologneMarket5

A large Christmas tree stands above the concert stage in the middle of the market, which is always filled with carol singers accompanied by musicians. There are booths filled with sparkling glass Christmas ornaments in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

CologneMarket7

There are booths filled with hand-crafted wooden toys, jolly wooden nutcrackers and smokers, and all sorts of gifts to take home to your family and friends.

There are booths filled with giant cookies that say Ich Liebe Dich! (I love you!) and roasted nuts that smell incredible as you walk by.

Even bundled up in winter coats, scarves and mittens, eventually you begin to feel the cold as you wander through the booths, each more colorful and inviting than the next. It’s time for Gluhwein!

CologneMarket9
Spiced warm wine, or hot chocolate if you prefer, in souvenir mugs is just the thing to warm your hands – and, after a couple of mugs, your toes and nose too!

But my absolute favorite is the booth with the chocolate dipped fruit! Christmas-Market-Chocolate Fruit

Skewers of chocolate-dipped fresh fruit – pieces of bananas, pineapples, grapes, strawberries – dipped in white chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate – it is divine!

Although not found at the Christmas markets, my favorite meal at this time of year in Germany is Christmas goose.

ChristmasGooseDinnerIf you’ve never had goose, you’ve missed out. It is mouth-wateringly delicious! It tastes similar to duck and is traditionally served with Klopse (round steamed potato dumplings), rotkohl (pickled red cabbage) and roasted chestnuts – my all-time favorite German meal.

Gluhwein recipe

Although I’ll miss out on the Christmas goose and chocolate-covered fruit this year, I’ll be reminiscing while trying out this Gluhwein recipe I found on Pinterest!

It calls for 1 bottle of dry red wine, 1 cup of brandy, 1 sliced lemon, and 3 sliced oranges. To add the spice, stir in 6 sticks of cinnamon, 8 to 10 cloves, and 3 to 5 whole anis. Mix in 3 tablespoons of sugar then simmer for 45 minutes.

Prost!
