Antique-Inspired Home Decor from Aidan Gray and Sarreid

We’ve had a lot of good news lately and here’s another piece: we just started carrying home decor from two terrific makers: Aidan Gray and Sarreid.

Aidan Gray ChandelierAidan Gray creates wonderful antique-inspired designs in furniture, lighting and home accents. The Aidan Gray company is renowned for its European furniture styling, with a “one of a kind” custom look that echoes 17th and 18th century antiques.

The Aidan Gray collection boasts elegant lines and sophisticated finishes. Their pieces are crafted with authentic materials including solid wood and metals, antiqued mirrors, and painted ‘Old World’ effects.

This extravagant crystal prism chandelier is a great example of Aidan Gray’s show-stopping style!

Aidan Gray PlanterWe also admire this Aidan Gray planter, hand-crafted in iron. It delivers the touch of  “European Grandeur” that Aidan Gray always promises. I can imagine this planter standing in the Tuileries garden in Paris, can’t you?

Aidan Gray occasional chairThis elegant Aidan Gray occasional chair with a curved back would be perfectly at home in a grand country house in England or a picturesque French castle.

Fortunately we don’t need a castle to enjoy it as a delightful corner chair in a feminine bedroom. It would also look enchanting as the finishing touch in a study next to a writing desk, or as inviting occasional seating in any comfortable nook or alcove.

I love this piece because it is so unusual and yet classic.

New Writing Chest Antique style
Speaking of unusual, I want to show you a few pieces of Sarreid furniture and home decor accents too.

Sarreid is a 50-year-old company and it has an even larger collection of unusual vintage and antique-inspired furniture designs. How about this incredible solid walnut writing chest with gleaming brass hardware and a hinged top?

It looks as if it is at least a century old but it is newly crafted and the exquisite design makes it a versatile chest for many different uses. It’s a great signature piece to set the tone and add tons of character to any room.

Washed Gray Mirror recycledThis distinctive Sarreid mirror also stands out, made of recycled pine with oak and rubberwood veneers. The mirror panes are bordered by columns. It’s a very nice accent mirror that has the function of a looking glass but also adds architectural detail to a room and is a piece of wall art in itself.

Sarreid ChairFinally, we really like Sarreid’s leather chairs. The prices are amazingly good, especially when you see the high quality and chic styling.

This Sarreid Royal Rouge leather chair share shows you what we mean! Fans of vintage mid-century modern style will love this chair, although we also have many more antique style chairs in the collection.

I hope you enjoyed the mini-tour from these two new collections that we stock. We’re thrilled to be able to offer them to our customers… check out all the Aidan Gray furniture and home decor and Sarreid home decor on our website and tell us what you think!

Client Spotlight: Charming Cottage Style

We met Lenore and John M. at the Antique Tobacco Barn in Asheville, NC, while we were there restocking our booth. Lenore and John recently purchased a very charming cottage in Sapphire, NC, that dates to the turn of the century and sits next to a babbling brook.

Antique French Hunting BuffetLenore fell in love with two buffets in our booth and then went on our website and found a beautiful set of chairs to match!

Lenore wanted an impressive buffet for the open dining area to fit with the rustic nature of the exposed logs in the mountain cabin.

I think the antique Hunting Buffet makes an excellent choice! The stunning carved scene of a hunter and stag on the upper cabinet makes this antique French Henry II buffet a work of art as well as a beautiful piece of furniture. The two lower cabinet doors are carved with mythical, dragon-like creatures.
Antique French Carved Henry II BuffetHere is the 8-feet-tall antique Henry II style oak buffet in Lenore’s home. Made in France in 1920, the buffet makes an eye-catching statement with practical storage and serving space. Vintage French Chairs

Peeking into the bottom of the photo you can see the vintage French Renaissance dining chairs Lenore chose.

The set of six French Renaissance dining chairs was made in about 1930. The vintage chairs are beautifully upholstered in red and cream brocade and the spiral turning on the oak legs adds another decorative detail.

Let’s take a better look at the vintage chairs together with the antique buffet in Lenore’s dining area…

antique French dining chairs Renaissance

Doesn’t it look amazing? The red patterned upholstery on the antique Renaissance style chairs adds a pop of color and provides comfortable seating around the long plank-top dining table.

Vintage French Buffet Louis XVI CarvedLenore also chose a pretty Louis XVI buffet for the master bedroom. The vintage French buffet is carved with delightful ribbons, floral designs and coats of arms. The unusual vintage buffet with a rich golden patina on the aged oak was crafted in France in 1930 and nearly the entire front is carved in with beautiful detail. Lenore saw that the mirrored doors and open display shelves of this sideboard made it the perfect candidate for a subtle French translation…. she got creative and turned it into a piece of bedroom furniture!

What a magnificent and unique dresser, with so much space to tuck away your jewels and silk scarves and other favorite pieces of clothing.

Louis XVI antique sideboard bedroomThe bedroom is just off a sitting room with a large fireplace – a wonderful place to enjoy a bottle of wine! The four poster bed is also an antique that came from the personal collection of the original owner of the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. We think the feminine elements on the Louis XVI buffet in combination with the gorgeous four-poster bed combine to make a very romantic master bedroom indeed.

We love it when our customers get creative with using antique furniture in their homes.
Many thanks to Lenore and John for inviting us into your lovely home for a tour!

Houzz Home Decor Honors for EuroLux Home

Houzz Award badgeWe only started selling on Houzz.com last summer but already we’ve been blown away by the great interior design community there and the great home decor advice. We were especially pleased to receive a congratulations email from Houzz saying that EuroLux Home had been awarded more honors!

Houzz Recommended BadgeIn January I posted that EuroLux Home won a Best of Houzz 2015 award for our customer satisfaction and service. That was terrific, but now we’ve got more good news to celebrate as we’ve received two new badges. We received the Recommended badge which is given to the top-rated pros on Houzz.

Houzz Influencer Badge We also received The Influencer badge, given to pros on Houzz whose “advice and knowledgeable posts are most appreciated by the Houzz community.” I love that title… “The Influencer.” It sounds like a movie starring Clint Eastwood!Clint Eastwood

I don’t know if  Clint is very big on home decor, but I’m sure that Greg will be happy to stand in for him as The Influencer. He’ll be thrilled to play THAT role!

Joking aside, we are very grateful that the Houzz community enjoys what we do. Our new and antique furniture and home decor accents have also been featured in many Houzz editorials.

Just out of interest, I checked on our last few sales in our EuroLux Home Houzz shop. Our Houzz customers are a very diverse group of people with a wide range of tastes.

Bench by EuroLuxHome
Recent customers have bought sets of antique dining chairs, a beautiful cast resin pointer dog sculpture, some exquisite hand-crafted Aubusson throw pillows, and this handsome new French Country style bench boasting a hand-woven rattan seat.

Our lighting collections are also very popular with Houzz style-seekers including lighting by Jonathan Charles, Dale Tiffany, and Currey and Company.

We hope that you’ll come and follow EuroLux Home on Houzz if you have an account. (It’s free, of course.) Check out our customer projects too.

Meanwhile, we’ll carry on chatting with our home decor friends on Houzz and we’ll enjoy our new role as The Influencer!

Vintage Life: The Mystery Behind the Sign

EuroLux Home Antiques GalleryWe often tell you stories about the renovation of our 1920s vintage bungalow, but I’ve got a vintage story to tell you today about our buildings on Main Street, Newberry, SC.

In addition to the EuroLux Home gallery at 1409 Main Street (left) we also own 1407 Main Street. This is where Greg fixes computers and cell phones in his business, The Computer Doctor. (The EuroLux gallery is the drop off and pick up point for The Computer Doctor. We’re multi-talented here!)

That building has an upstairs loft which has never been renovated, nor used as anything other than non-air-conditioned storage space. When we purchased the building years ago, we planned to renovate, like our near-neighbors the Millers did in my post about Historic Newberry Main Street.

Loft2Here’s the loft. The photo is a bit dark because the windows are boarded up and all of the light bulbs were burnt out. I lugged a ladder up and changed them all but it remains pretty dark. It’s still is a very cool space and it has a neat story.

We intended to convert it into an upstairs loft apartment while expanding our business into the downstairs.
BUT! The best laid plans… We ended up finding our little vintage bungalow that we’re renovating and since it had a yard for the dogs, we decided that would be a better way to go than the loft. We still plan to renovate the loft in the future but for now let me just tell you the great old story about the building.

Back in the 1930s, Main Street in Newberry was a busy place. I shared some old-timey pictures in this Vintage Life blog post. It was the county seat, had the court house, and was the place to go shopping for all the folks that worked at the three cotton mills in town.

Nails marking 40 feetThere were actually two hardware stores in the same block on Main street, owned by two competing Lominack cousins. Those were Lominack’s Hardware (where EuroLux Home is currently located at 1409 Main Street) and Frank Lominack’s Hardware at 1403 Main Street.

You can still see the numbers on the floor in the EuroLux Home Gallery marking the number of feet for the hardware store’s measurements of rope and chain. (The photo at left shows the 40 feet marker.)

Old sign on EuroLuxHome buildingWe’ve also left the Lominack Hardware painted sign on the back of the building.

The story that I’ve heard said that the two cousins were always trying to one up each other in order to get more business by offering different products and services.

Frank Lominack’s Hardware decided to open a shooting range in the basement in order to corner the market and draw more folks into his hardware store. So the story goes, in November of 1934 a stray bullet hit the dynamite that was also stored in the basement and blew up the building!

You can see more about it in this old article in the Gastonia Daily Gazette.  There was $200,000 of damage. That’s a lot of money today but in 1934 it was a huge amount of money!

Loft of store with vintage signWe currently own 1405 Main Street and rent it out to our tenant, Expressions, a hair salon.

That previously 2 story building was occupied by a business called Livingston & Son General Merchandise at the time of the explosion. It was so damaged by the explosion that it had to be rebuilt, but the owner decided to only build it as a one-story building.

Our 1407 Main Street building was built after that business had opened, so the interior wall of 1407 Main Street actually shows the original painted advertisement that was on the exterior of the Livingston& Son building’s 2nd story.

That sure was a long explanation, but otherwise you wouldn’t understand how the advertising came to be on the inside wall of our building!

Today things aren’t quite as dramatic in our EuroLux gallery. Even all our cats and dogs play nicely together rather than competing with everyone within our fuzzy family. And I’m very relieved that Greg’s other business in the building is The Computer Doctor… NOT a shooting range!

Client Spotlight: French Antique Chairs in Sandoval Restaurant

A couple of years ago we sold a set of antique Renaissance chairs to Bart D.,  the director of Business Development for Richard Sandoval Restaurants. He was in charge of opening a new location of La Biblioteca, a tequila bar that offers more than 350 tequilas in Denver, CO.

Antique French Renaissance ChairsI’m delighted to hear that La Biblioteca has been a great success, and I’m even more delighted to think that our antique chairs feature as part of the décor in the bar and restaurant!

This is one chair from the set of six antique French Renaissance dining chairs.

They date to 1900 and each sturdy walnut chair boasts the original embossed dark brown leather on the seat and back, accented by a chunky nailhead trim.

Antique Renaissance Embossed Leather Chair

The leather is embossed with a decorative design of flowers and ribbons in the Louis XVI style. The rail of entwined ovals carved in the seat back add another strikingly ornamental touch that works well in a contemporary dining room.

French Antique chairs in restaurantHere are the antique French chairs in La Biblioteca restaurant in Denver. It’s near the Millennium Bridge in Denver’s RiverFront Park neighborhood and it’s the brainchild of international restaurateur, television personality and cookbook author, Chef Richard Sandoval. The original La Biblioteca location is in New York City on 3rd Avenue in Manhatten.

La Biblioteca Tequila LibraryBoth venues are based on Chef Sandoval’s “Library of Tequila” concept, serving up a menu of Latin-Asian cuisine and a collection of Sandoval’s personal favorite tequila selections including some aged up to 25 years.

I guess in Tequila Land that counts as a mellow old antique, so it’s fitting that diners get to enjoy some mellow antique furniture too!

La Biblioteca has received some wonderful press coverage. For example, Food And Wine magazine included the restaurant in their list of 7 Places to Drink Really Good Tequila.

The magazine added, “Sandoval’s superior menu includes guacamole with smoked trout, and tacos stuffed with skirt steak, Wagyu and chorizo.”

Mmm. Is there any chance that some Denver customers want Greg and me to personally deliver some antique furniture soon? That way we can stop over and try the tastes of La Biblioteca for ourselves. If you are one of our Colorado readers and you’ve been to La Biblioteca, we’d love to hear about it!

Things We Love: More Space at the Antique Tobacco Barn!

Greg and I are pleased with our sales of antique furniture since we opened a space at the Antique Tobacco Barn in Asheville, NC, last December. We asked for twice the amount of space and luckily the helpful folks at Antique Tobacco Barn were willing to oblige. It has been a tremendous amount of work to get our new space, B21, fixed up and looking great!

The new booth is actually two areas at the end of an aisle, so we have quite a bit of wall space – just what is needed for big antique furniture! These two photos show what the booth looked like, looking first one way…
Antique Tobacco Barn

…and then the other. You can see that the metal walls of the building were dark grey. Antique Tobacco Barn

Not only were the walls ugly, they didn’t show the furniture very well. They absorbed all the light making it difficult to see the beautiful carved details on the antique buffets and tables. Luckily, there were walls already built on the left side of the space, so we decided to build walls on the right side too and give everything a bright coat of paint.Antique Tobacco Barn

Greg worked on building the walls on the right side with wood panels we had already painted back in Newberry – here he is in action followed by the completed back wall.

Antique Tobacco Barn

I worked on painting the existing walls on the left side of the booth as well as the floor while we moved.

Antique Tobacco Barn

Once the paint was dry on the left side, we moved all of the furniture from the old booth to that side so that we could paint the floor on the right side too.

Antique Tobacco Barn

This was kinda starting to feel like performance art! Although the space was much brighter now, we also decided to hang lights to really give it a glow. Greg isn’t so fond of heights, so I did most of the work high up on the ladder.

Antique Tobacco Barn 8

First we hung chains across the space from the rafters and then we hung extension lights on the chains. We think it was definitely worth the effort!

Antique Tobacco Barn 9

Finally we moved two more loads of furniture in and then cleaned and waxed it all to make sure everything looked its best.

EuroLux Booth at Antique Tobacco Barn

The whole process took six trips to Asheville over a month’s time – whew, that was a LOT of work!
EuroLux Booth at Antique Tobacco BarnBut we think it looks great and we’re hoping for big sales. If you’re in the Asheville, NC area, be sure to stop by the Antique Tobacco Barn. It is located in the Biltmore Village, just a couple miles from the Biltmore Estate. Autumn is a gorgeous time to visit Asheville to see the beautiful fall colors of the changing leaves!
